History of Brookfield Plantation Thomas R. Mills, Sr. and his brother were important cotton shippers in Savannah during the mid 1800’s and owned substantial interest in the Marine Bank. After the Civil War retaining their economic security, Thomas Mills built this home as his retirement and summer estate. He also built a horse track and stables for thoroughbred horses and introduced the first Guernsey cows to Spalding County. Although planted in cotton most of its agricultural history this property is thought to have been the first commercial scale pimento pepper farm in America. The quaint well house and hay manger with cedar shake roofs matching the Main House as well as many of the other structures still stand overlooking the Smokehouse. Today, the land is beautiful gentle rolling Georgia pastureland framed with white board fencing in a very private setting dotted with pecan trees, oaks, magnolias and other species amid gardens of roses and lush landscaping.
