The project focuses on optimizing the context of its site which is located at the center of Thu Thiem new urban area adjacent to a vast natural landscape. Here, the new center is comprised of public spaces for activities such as outdoor cinemas, film festivals, hi-end services, etc. Solutions are given to balance between economic and humanity needs. Corridors at the “beginning” - “end” of the theaters

Cinema block concept

The cinema terminal now acts as a mini-commercial area with service chains such as foodcourt, shop,... Therefore, it is necessary to arrange more elevator cores and WC. 2 3 4

Cinemas are condensed in height to ensure vision from Mai Chi Tho street.

Cinemas are normally lack of corridors to minimize cost of building, which leads to a hustle and bustle experience of going to a cinema.

300-seat cinema perspective

Stereotype of cinema

After separating the core cluster in the middle into two terminal corridors, we create two experience zones before and after the movie, which is an opportunity to diversify the consumer experience and bring profit.

The project seeks for possible solutions to harmonize people’s diverse reading demands that are contained in spaces with different scales and qualities as well as interactions between the building and its vast greenery surrounding. In terms of functionality, the library can be divided into two different areas: the dynamic public space and the ‘core’ room embracing more in-depth process of reading. The border between these contradictory parts must be both subconciously bold and visually seamless in order not to interupt readers’ experience in space. Thus, the core room is designed in oblique cone shape which at the same time ensures the variation of daylight configuration inside and visual transition outside. Its border is also emphasized through roof openings that let sunlight come in as a dynamic seperator.

Transitional space

Space sequence

The volume adjacent to Ban Nguyet river is lowered. The language of curves is used to emphasize the context and form clear indication of entrances.

The “core” infiltrates daylight into the main reading areas. It embraces monumentality of architecture, which ultimately shapes readers’ behavior and attitude towards reading.

Interior + Landscape

Difference between dynamic and static spaces are boldly evoked through transitional spaces, which at the same time should be visually seamless.

3 4

Exterior + Landscape

The hall continues exterior greeneries. Ratio between its height and width is emphasized through a great roof cutout, which helps define the most dynamic space in the building.

The “core”

46 PROJECT LIBRARY 47

Thanks to its special enclosure, the library is ensured to provide indirect sunlight for its reading area as well as having enough exposure of its interior as a public building.

The “Core”

Daylight diverse configuration is casted in through the core’s truncated geometry. Momumentality is implied through skylight which is inspired by the famous Panthenon’s coffered concrete dome.

The school is located next to a huge landscape area, which is supposed to filter a great amount of polluted air at the center of district 7. Its form is a combination of an ellipse base and bold boxes on top. Inspired by children’s tendency to run around in circles, the base is comprised of all creative and physical activities, which brings freedom to students’ imagination. On the other hand, the top is formal boxes which are traditional classrooms. This geometry helps generate rational sunlight and ventilation for every classroom.

Competition Instructor: M.Arch Võ Đình Trần Trân 2020

The passage complete

The arch of the pavilion bears a strong resemblance to the old bridge. It echoes sounds of the channel transmitted through the cut floor - a metaphor for laments of the channel being spread and heard.

Create the dialogue between human and nature through the cut floor with steps at the center of the pavilion

The dialogue

Restore the original function of public space for people to gather and reminisce about the old heritage.

5859 COMPETITION CULTURAL SPACE DESIGN 2020

Enhance focus on the memorial space by letting the light come in. the center void becomes a complete passage of the past (the channel’s lament) - the present (human’s listen) and the future (human’s sub-conscious mind being awakened)

The once famous Ba Cang bridge is a childhood memory of district 5 HCMC citizens. Therefore, local people are always reminiscent of the crowded and playful atmosphere of this destination where they gather and interact with water of Hang Bang channel with their friends and family. The beautiful scenery is now lost due to the bridge’s demolition and the channel occlusion in 1980. moreover, lack of local drainage and litter of unconscious passer-by frequently causes flood in this area.

Vo Van Kiet Overpass

The route that leads them to the designed waterpark crosses Vo Van Kiet boulevard.

This space is designated for daily activities such as doing exercise, sightseeing,... plus some specials events like water gallery and vietnamese puppet concert.

On the way to the park, the forest-like scenery slowly appears.

Create a waterbus stop where passengers have a break after a long ride along Saigon river.

The greenery creates a forest-like atmosphere, which is in contrast to the hustle and bustle life on vo van kiet boulevard.

The ending point of the journey reflects the moment of awakening of passengers when they experience Ba Cang pavilion.

What may surprise people is that despite its richness in every aspect that supports tourism, Cổ Loa is still not considered a developed and successful tourist attraction in our country. The reason is rather simple: Cổ Loa is being gradually forgotten due to false conservation and exploitation of its remnants. Therefore, it is urgent to recapture what were core impressions of Cổ Loa’s Genius Loci (spirit of place) and trace them back into the MAP OF CỔ LOA’S SOUL.
