SOFT BRICKS

Our purpose is to create a structure in a road island that provides a moment of isolation within the busy city to connect with nature and self. Through the exploration of the paste and it’s properties using the natural force of gravity to pull and extrude the paste through fabric, we created a brick module system to build a semi-enclosed space for users to experience the natural material and form in close proximity. Our future projection is to explore the possibility of different structures by using this same technique.

FOREST BART

FOREST Bart is designed with the idea of bringing the exterior elements to the interior, while filtering the inteior air of the BART and the city. Because Bart is an enclosed space, air circulation within the transportation can be uncomfortable and unpleasant to many users. To solve that problem, plants are brought into the space to take advantage the photosynthesis process of the plants to breath in polluted air or carbon dioxide and release purified air and oxygen. The plants structure is designed in an arch form that expands from the middle of the BART in a repeated pattern to mimic the features of the atmosphere inside a forest or a garden. With the plants structure placed in the middle of the Bart, the interior space is divided into two walkways:the main circulation to get trough the BART and shorter alleys for users to move around easier.

FUN MUNI

With modern technology, people are fixated to their mobile devices. But the problem is that people are focusing to much on their phones while riding the bus without being aware or making interaction with the surrounding people. With the Fun MUNI, sensors and interactive surfaces are intergrated on the floor and some furnitures to enhance the awareness of the user’s body within the space. This also creates opportunity for people to have interaction with others through the interactive surfaces. The interactive surfaces are programed with a system of connecting dots of light to visually create a web or network of users. As any object is contacted to the interactive surfaces, a circle of light will be created upon the area of any contacted surfaces that can be sensed. From the center of a circle, the system will sense for close by circles within radius of 3 feet and connect them with a thin line. With this system, the users can visually have a higher awareness and better chance for interaction to other surrounding users.

The MUNI interior space is designed into 3 zones for the users to choose. Zone 1 is a wall to floor screens on the side of the bus for the local artists to rent for temporary art exhibition. This allows the users and the community to recognize and be aware of the talents of local artists. Zone 2 is designed with a 2 sided bench, one facing the screen for elders to see the artworks displayed on the screen and one facing the glass walls that allow users to look out onto the streets. Zone 3 is high seatings with desks for people to work on. Smaller screens are intergrated on the desk surface for users to project their works for a small and quick conference.

FORECAST FERRY

In San Francisco, the weather can be one of the important elements that make San Francisco different from other cities. The Forecast FERRY is designed to enhance the experience of the weather elements while still being within the interior. With the ideas of bring nature to the interior, the natural elements are brought into the interior through 2 main walkways along the side of the boat. As the 2 walkways are the main circulation of the Forecast FERRY, the users are able to feel and experience the weather whenever they move from one space to another. There are three floors inside the boat. The main deck which are where the main walkways are located surrounding 2 enclosed space, one is the low seatings area and another is the higher seating area with a bar in the center of the space. The two spaces are covered with glass walls allowing users to look outside for the views of San Francisco. There is a light system that embeded onto the ceiling and the floor along the glass walls of the two interior space to mimic the color of the sky of the current weather to set an overall moods for the FERRY. On the exterior of the Forecast FERRY, the word “SFFERRY is designed that expand the height of the boat to re-brand the San Francisco FERRY to be unique.
