Ephemeral pavillon, cultural building, archeology, working and exhibition space

Lazzaretto Nuevo, Veneto

ARCHEOLOGIST CAROUSSEL

The beauty of the ruins lies in the tension between human creation and nature’s work on it.

The form and layout of the pavilion derive from two main intentions: to highlight the context of the island of Lazzaretto Nuovo and to showcase the work of the archaeologists.

MODEL 1/20

The pavilion is located near the main building and the well. The spaces are oriented according to the viewpoints considered interesting during the study of the site. There are three remarkable viewpoints. In plan, these viewpoints correspond to three spaces whose dimensions differ from those of the rest of the pavilion. These viewpoints are places of contemplation for the visitor: the views of the context are an integral part of the exhibition.

9
ELEVATION
13 INTERIOR VIEW

The pavilion is both centrifugal and centripetal, for when the visitor turns towards the heart of the building, another spectacle is presented: the work of the archaeologists. Indeed, the space dedicated to the archaeologists is like a stage: the visitor moves through this central space, which is visible between porous shelves. These shelves contain tools and archaeological remains.

FABLE IN VENICE

The library is a place where past and present converge, where time confronts and reveals itself. It reads like the history of a civilisation, an accumulation of knowledge and thought. When you walk through this space, the cerebral density is immense.

I like the idea of the link between books and nature, anchoring materiality, and climate. The leaf is sensitive to air, water, and light. How can I protect it from Venice’s aqua alta and nature?

The question of reading and light is of paramount importance to me. The role of the reader is to bring to light the content captured by the author. This gesture, with its power-ful symbolism, must be the result of a ritual that allows the thought sealed in the paper to be reborn and brought to the light of heaven, where the author, the creator, resides.

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

2nd floor plan

The uppermost level connects openly with the first floor, enabling the light from the ceiling’s luminous box to spread its radiance across the entire library.

This mezzanine, situated within the archives, is exclusively dedicated to book storage, while the library area offers additional room for both leisure and reading.

1st floor plan

The upper floor is subdivided into alcoves, offering all library users private spaces to work, access their book selection and enjoy a view of the sea or lagoon. These alcoves can be converted into meeting rooms or archive offices.

It is on a footbridge suspended above the void that users travel from one building to another, enjoying views of the sea.

CULTURAL LABORATORY

Rehabilitation, urban connection, cultural building Boulevard Ney, Paris

The Ney warehouse is like a border between two worlds: the macrocephalic capital and its suburbs, which extend cheerfully to the north of Paris. This concrete barrier, more than 500 metres long, unwittingly isolates and excludes the suburbs. A new dialogue with the city and the «zone» has become necessary.

The installation of a cultural laboratory is the promise of providing the inhabitants with a space dedicated to experimentation and the discovery of art. The primary objective of this programme is to offer a site open to the city and the suburbs, which would be an incubator for cultural projects on a human scale.

At the core of the site stands the principal edifice, serving as the nerve center for staff operations, rehearsal spaces, and exhibitions. What truly sets this architectural apart is its transparency on the city. Its grand glass façade extends an open invitation, merging the interior with the external environment. This innovative design not only embraces the park that envelops it but also seamlessly integrates into the broader urban fabric.

Renovation, landscape architecture and sanctuary pavilion

Villaroy, Ile de France

Our team has proposed a new program for this family farm. The serene and wholesome atmosphere served as our inspiration for designing a center dedicated to autistic adults. A central focus of this project was the garden, which connected and complemented the other aspects of the center.

This modern interpretation of the garden, guided by a pontoon, offered an opportunity to engage the the senses of the visitors through various atmospheres and sequences: a landscape reminiscent of garrigue, a tall grass forest, aromatic fields, a g rass meticulously organized vegetable garden, and a concealed sanctuary nestled at the heart of the garden.

HLL: What are your aspirations for this farm?

F: This farm has been in my family for generations, and my sons continue to work here. However, many of the buildings on the property are unused, and the village lacks sufficient activities. Moreover, the presence of the national golf course and the airport is gradually altering the traditional way of life in this area. If you explore the farm, you might even come across some stray golf balls. My desire is to maintain the serene ambiance of the farm while introducing new activities to safeguard it from real estate developers.

The sanctuary, featuring walls that can be altered and customized to suit one’s preferences, offers a novel experience of space and intimacy. The façades, constructed with pivoting wooden modules, can function as both barriers, isolating the interior from external views, or as frames for observing the distant landscape. These modules also serve as a means for every individual using the pavilion to leave a ephemeral mark of their presence, allowing them to arrange the space according to their own desires, for their personal use and that of the next occupant.

During my internship at Studio Henry, I had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned brands such as Palm Angels and Zadig et Voltaire. My role involved designing furniture, interiors, and stairs for these prestigious brands. I was also responsible for material selection and liaising with suppliers from around the world.

Working with luxury brands was both challenging and rewarding. I particularly enjoyed this collaboration due to the creativity and innovation they seek to enhance the client experience.

This work allowed me to diversify my skills by working on a variety of design projects.

ARCHITECTURE

WHITE SPACE

[...] I am rather the one who is out of place. The room we are in seems huge, yet it is not oversized. The curved walls bend and fold around us, like the mother body, the first sanctuary. He is still there, facing me, naked, but he doesn’t see me. This strange atmosphere is familiar to me. My body is light, as if bathed in salty water, so fresh and pleasant. I like this feeling of being only spirit, free from the constraints of the body. This place is like it. Their presence is total. Their being extends to me. Without even having to move, I experience this place, rich in its absence. Nothing here makes sense. The walls seem to be made of a dreamy fabric, smoother and shinier than silk, softer than satin, light as the idea of a golden Provence field.

Fiction about an architectural dream

September 2021 - Paris

The physical space created by a mute and empty architecture pretends to leave a place for another, for an existential void already present. The flat, aphasic walls of a building no longer provide a hook for our gaze, our eyes wander aimlessly and without destination, and are drawn by a movement that inevitably draws them towards an exit, a window, an escape, a frame. Yes, indeed, these aphasic architectures are not only an empty and lazy facade, they aim to put forward an already present. The lack of expression of these buildings is frightening because it refers to our presence in the world. Whoever is in this present, faces his being and the infinity of the surrounding world. The architecture of silence is a call to look at the existing and the surrounding world. Aphasia, the need of silence Essay on architectural language

With this book, we attempt to understand Nahui Olin’s work under the lense of architecture. The artist’s creative process is intrinsically linked to her place of production.

Architecture is much more than a simple juxtaposition of forms and materials. It is a discipline that goes beyond pure functionality, seeking to evoke emotions, tell stories and provoke thought. At the heart of this research is narrative development, an approach that infuses architecture with a dynamic and immersive dimension. By weaving complex narratives through the composition of spaces, the sequence of rooms and the arrangement of elements, narrative development in architecture brings depth and meaning to each project. It is an exciting exploration of the interaction between the built environment and the people who inhabit it, revealing the power of architecture as a vehicle for emotion and meaning.
Nahui Olin, a symbol of female emancipation and Mexican art, made Calle General Cano 93 her home during the most prolific years of her career. Today, her former studio is home to REA’s architectural practice.
