Jackson arrived at the London store Sept. 26 with an entourage, including a bodyguard and an assistant.

t wasn’t quite an escapade, but Janet Jackson made a rare public appearance September 26, showing off her neverbefore-seen baby bump. The “Rhythm Nation” singer, expecting her first child at age 50 with husband Wissam Al Mana, 41, popped by London shop Back in Action for 45 minutes, checking out furniture and strollers. Reportedly due in November, Jackson “is excited,” says a family source. “She feels strong.” Nevertheless, the Grammy winner — who has been on bed rest, per the source — sat for the duration of her private shopping session. FAMILY PLANNING Because of Jackson’s age, her pregnancy is

According to Chicagobased Ob-Gyn Jessica Shepherd (who has not treated Jackson), complications such as high blood pressure and blood clots, common in older moms-to-be, can lead doctors to recommend rest. “Women should be able to move from place to place,” she says — but that’s it. After undergoing “intense” IVF treatments, says a source, the Qatar-based couple, who own a home in London, are taking every precaution. Jackson, adds another insider, “is being extra careful.” USM AG A ZIN E.COM

Now a U.S. citizen, Machado pledges to vote for Clinton.

HE’S NOT SORRY Donald Trump doesn’t regret calling Miss Universe 1996 Alicia Machado “Miss Piggy.” The day after Hillary Clinton, 68, slammed her GOP foe for fat-shaming the Venezuelan beauty, he doubled down. The onetime pageant boss, 70, told Fox & Friends September 27 the then–19-year-old had “gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem.” Though Machado, 39, blamed Trump for her subsequent eating disorder, he shrugged off criticism, this time via The O’Reilly Factor, insisting: “It is a beauty contest.” ROUND 2 Trump had barely gotten started. In a September 30 tweet, he urged followers to check out Machado’s alleged “sex tape.” Myth-busting Snopes .com dug up the footage: a bit from Machado’s 2005 stint on Spain’s La Granja (akin to The Real World), in which she rolled around under the sheets — “covered,” the site clarifies — with Spanish actor Fernando Acaso. That same day, BuzzFeed unearthed a more risqué title, the soft-core Playboy Video Centerfold 2000 — featuring a cameo by champagne-popping Trump. BAD BUSINESS The scrutiny continued October 3. In Associated Press interviews with 20-plus cast and crew members from The Apprentice, insiders said the former host would rate women by breast size and once wondered aloud whether one was a “tiger in bed.” The Trump campaign, however, deemed these “false claims fabricated by publicity hungry . . . former employees.” 2

Heartbroken by the end of his marriage, Pitt agrees with his ex Angelina Jolie on terms for him to see their six kids BY ERIC ANDERSSON

With each passing day that he hasn’t seen his six children, Brad Pitt grows more devastated. “Totally crushed” is the phrase a friend uses. After his wife of two years, Angelina Jolie, blindsided him by filing for divorce and requesting full physical custody of their children September 19 — and barred her ex from seeing them, according to a source — Pitt has become a virtual recluse at an undisclosed location in L.A. He’s cleared his calendar (“I’m currently focused on my family situation,” he said in a statement explaining his absence from the September 28 premiere

He is desperate to see the kids.” So desperate, he’d agree to nearly anything. On September 30, news broke that the Maleficent star, 41, and Pitt — after intense negotiations through their attorneys — both signed off on a temporary agreement regarding Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and 8-yearold twins Knox and

According to multiple sources, the terms of the plan, which lasts from September 22 through October 20, state that the children will remain living with Jolie at her Malibu rental, while Pitt is granted visitation; the family must undergo counseling; and, perhaps most humiliating for Pitt, he has volunteered to undergo random drug and

But Jolie’s attorneys, knowing a custody battle in court could get ugly and public, talked her off the ledge. “Her legal team worked with her temper,” says the Jolie friend, “so they could reach an agreement for the sake of the kids.” Pitt put the children first as well. “Brad said he’d do whatever makes it easier for the kids,” says a Pitt source. He told his team he doesn’t want to play dirty.” So both he and Jolie let the DCFS be in charge. Lifesaving Choice, Lasting Effects Jolie simultaneously battled health issues and a broken marriage

A

s Jolie dealt with the stress of her marriage imploding, she also had to manage the physical stress of going through premature menopause. Eighteen months before she filed for divorce, she elected to remove her ovaries. (Diagnosed with the BRCA1 gene in 2013, she’d previously undergone a double mastectomy.) “I do not feel any less of a woman,” she wrote in a New York Times op-ed. “I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.” HEAVY TOLL Still, the potentially lifesaving surgeries have serious health

consequences: “All of the things that go along with menopause — hot flashes, insomnia, possibly mood changes,” Beverly Hills–based ob-gyn Rebecca Nelken tells Us. Noting that the average age of menopause is 51, she adds, “If a woman has her ovaries removed in her forties, all of those symptoms are going to hit all at once — and often pretty severely.” To Jolie, whose mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer and aunt died of breast cancer, there was an important reason to take the risk: “I know my children will never have to say, ‘Mom died of ovarian cancer.’”

unthinkable in the days immediately following the now-infamous midair fight. Aboard a private VistaJet from Nice, France, en route to Burbank, California, Pitt began yelling at Jolie. When Maddox intervened, according to the Jolie friend, “Brad got up in his face and screamed at him.” (Though those on Jolie’s side reported Pitt got physical, sources close to Pitt adamantly deny any abuse.) Over the following days, Jolie “was very pissed off,” says the friend. At the same time, ugly news reports accusing Pitt of hiring Russian hookers and cheating with Allied costar Marion Cotillard (which she denied) kept cropping up. A source lays the blame with Jolie’s team, claiming those in her camp “are running a smear campaign” against Pitt. Sniffs a Pitt source, “There’s a lot of misinformation and people trying to make things more difficult.” (Jolie insiders deny bad-mouthing Pitt.) Initial reports about the parenting plan were — not so coincidentally — also unflattering to Pitt. TMZ claimed Jolie got “full custody,” saying only that Pitt’s visitation rights had “strings attached.” The Pitt insider slams that assessment, noting that the voluntary agreement is a parenting plan — not a custody agreement. In other words, the two continue to share legal custody, as they always have. Still, a Jolie source says the actress is satisfied with the way things

process even though there might be a stigma attached to it,” Berenji tells Us. “It might actually just be a way to deal with this and put down all these rumors in a very short, fast, quick period of time.” That’s exactly the plan, says the insider: “Brad has nothing to hide on the drug front, so there is no reason for him to have any problem with doing the tests.”

MOVING FORWARD Jennings Hegar addressed the press in 2012.

ANGELINA’S POWER PLAY The humanitarian is in talks to play a groundbreaking female soldier Always the mother of reinvention, Jolie is eyeing her next role. Though she has often said she no longer wants to act, she’s in negotiations for TriStar’s Shoot Like a Girl, a source confirms to Us. In the epic (based on the 2017 memoir), Jolie, a licensed pilot, will play helicopter pilot and Afghanistan vet Mary Jennings Hegar. Wounded in a 2009 rescue operation, she sued to overturn the Army’s exclusion of women in combat.

worked out. “Angie,” says the source, “did get what she wanted out of this plan.” To a certain extent, Pitt did too. Even before he and Jolie split — driven apart by bitter fights over, among other things, his tendency to divulge his marital problems to friends and costars — Pitt had been an advocate of counseling. “Brad felt Angelina was choosing to

ignore things that needed to be dealt with,” according to a source. Now the family will confront everything, including the unhappy marriage, the plane incident and the divorce, with a head-on urgency. Even the voluntary drug testing may work out in Pitt’s favor. “For him, the best way to vindicate himself might be to put himself through this

As October 20 approaches, the DCFS will determine whether the conditions stay in place — and whether to continue with its investigation. The social workers assigned to the case will take into consideration the therapist’s recommendations and Pitt’s drug test results and discuss the next steps with Jolie and Pitt. “People from both sides hope that the two sides will reach a longer-term agreement on their own,” says the insider. “The hope is that this period of time will lead them to being able to resolve things without the involvement of the courts.” Just one problem: the bad blood between Jolie and Pitt remains. While Jolie quietly seethes, Pitt, for his part, remains “frustrated” by the bitter battle, says the insider. “He just wants to work through everything and get to a place where there can be some certainty about what’s going on.” Adds the Pitt friend, “The kids are the only thing he’s  hanging on to.” USM AG A ZIN E.COM

lad in a robe at husband Kanye West’s apartment in Paris’ luxury Hotel de Pourtalès building in the early hours of October 3, Kim Kardashian FaceTimed future sister-in-law Blac Chyna at her L.A. baby shower, then broadcast it on Snapchat. Five thieves, waiting nearby, seized the opportunity to get the E! star alone. Around 2:25 a.m., the men — some masked, some dressed as police officers — took the concierge at gunpoint and forced entry into West’s secondfloor flat. One pointed a gun at the terrified 35-year-old mom while binding her hands with plastic zip ties, placing her in the bathtub and locking her in the bathroom. “Kim was hysterically crying, begging for her life, telling them about her babies,”

a source tells Us. “She definitely thought she was going to be raped and murdered. And she was basically naked.” Once her mouth was covered with duct tape, the Frenchmen demanded her “bague” — the 20-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring, estimated at $4.5 million, West had given her in August. Grabbing more jewels totaling $11 million, including Kanye West Collection pieces she wore to the Givenchy show October 2, and two iPhones, they escaped on rental bikes. Adds the source, “It was so quick.”

PHONING HOME

Wriggling out of her restraints, Kim frantically called “everyone she knew in Paris,” according to the insider, including sisters Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, who were with Kim’s trusted odyguard, Pascal uvier, roughly iles away at nightclub L’Arc. “The phone call to Kourtney,” says the source, “triggered everyone rushing to her side.” The Selfish author also dialed an assistant for West, who was 3,600-plus miles away in Queens, performing on stage at Arriving at their the Meadows NYC pad Oct. 3, Music & Arts t Kim and Wes Festival. ry ve d re “appea Only seconds on edge,” says a witness.

into the hit “Heartless,” West, 39, told the crowd he had a “family emergency,” dashed off stage and headed straight to his $24.5 million rental apartment in NYC’s Tribeca, where daughter North, 3, and 10-monthold son Saint were under the watchful eye of nannies. Says a West insider, “Kim and Kanye were both extremely concerned about the kids.” Kim couldn’t get home fast enough. After meeting with police, who took fingerprints, she flew via private jet with mom Kris Jenner, Kris’ boyfriend, Corey Gamble, assistant Stephanie Sheppard and Duvier from Paris-Le Bourget Airport to New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport, where her husband — and a 14-car motorcade — were waiting. “Kanye doesn’t care about anything that was taken — he just cares that Kim is safe,” says a source, adding that her 15-carat engagement ring was at their L.A. home. “It was the scariest moment of his life.” Safe in the arms of her husband, the insider adds, Kim spent the day crying. “She’s beside herself,” continues the source. “The whole family is.”

SUSPECTS WANTED Now Paris police are searching for the culprits. “The police are speculating that it’s an inside job,” says the source. “How else would they know there would be this tiny window of time when she would be alone?” One photographer — who had been following

Kim, and even posed as a cop to gain entry to a dinner she attended the day before this incident — was questioned. In the meantime, the family is rethinking its team. “Not only will security be heavier,” says the source, “but there will also be unidentifiable security.” Duvier will remain on staff: “Kim doesn’t believe this is his  fault in any way.”

Duvier (with Kim and Sediuk Sept. 28) wrote that he focuses “110%” on his duties.

THE (BIG) MAN BY HER SIDE Five days before the heist, towering bodyguard Pascal Duvier had Kim’s back. When Vitalii Sediuk, 27, tried to kiss her derriere to protest what he called “her butt implants” September 28 in Paris, Duvier tackled Sediuk to the ground, prompting Kim to tweet, “My security @PascalDuvier is a G.” (Ukrainian celebrity harasser Sediuk also grabbed Gigi Hadid September 22 — and she elbowed him in the face.) Duvier later replied to a fan that he’d happily kick Sediuk in the balls “if there are no cameras to record it.”

US EXCLUSIVE “Give me your best shot now,” Kordei (in L.A. June 1) tells Us. “I’m not running away from anyone.”

Fifth Harmony’s Normani

40

1 7, 2 0 1 6

Pop singer Kordei was terrorized by online bullies — until she took a stand. She tells Us why refusing to back down was all worth it BY SAR AH GROSSBART et f--king lynched.” “Dumb black bitch.” “You f--ked up the pretty girl group.” Those were some of the messages Fifth Harmony’s Normani Kordei was subjected to every time she checked Twitter. “It was absolutely disgusting,” the 20-year-old tells Us. The hate reached a fervor when the Atlanta native called bandmate Camila Cabello “very quirky” during an August 1 Facebook Live interview with website Galore. Perceiving the label as a snub, Cabello fans filled Kordei’s feed with the n-word and other racist remarks. Though Cabello defended her pal, tweeting, “I won’t tolerate on my timeline any kind of hate, racism, or discrimination,” the bullying got so bad that Kordei decided to take a hiatus from Twitter. But after nearly six weeks away, she realized she could use social media to make a social change. The “Work From Home” singer teamed up with the nonprofit Cybersmile Foundation, which offers support to victims of online abuse, to raise awareness about cyberbullying. “My mission is to show people there is hope,” notes the single star. “This taught me I’m definitely stronger than I thought I was.” Hours after reinstalling her Twitter app September 13, Kordei sat down with Us’ Cara Sprunk at West Hollywood’s Soho House to share her scary experience.

G

The bullying started when Fifth Harmony formed on The X Factor in 2012. What did people say? Everybody in the group gets online hate, but mine is different. Racism really does exist and I’m the only African American girl of the group. There are people creating Photoshopped pictures of me getting beat as if I were a slave back in the day.

FROM LEFT: ROWAN DALY; ROBB D. COHEN/INVISION/AP

That’s horrible. How did you deal?

So, why come back to Twitter?

I tried to ignore it at first. My way of dealing with it was to not deal with it, if that makes sense. I thought the best thing was just not to look at the comments. Even if there’s one comment, it’s superhurtful and it’s the one that sticks with you.

To turn the situation around and make it positive. I feel like it’s almost my purpose to speak up about my experience so it could help somebody else. The hate is not going to stop, but I needed to make a point that you can’t run away from a bully. You can’t allow someone’s hate to dictate your life. I want to be the voice for those people who are going through the same thing, like little African American boys and girls getting bullied at school. It wasn’t just, I’m going to get back in to tweet, “I had a burger today.”

And things got worse after your Facebook Live interview? Oh, yes. I even put up a statement clarifying that I didn’t mean anything by it and I love all the girls, but I guess that backfired because I started getting even more hate. It was just too much — they even attacked my grandma, who’s on Twitter! I was really scared.

What happened when you announced you were quitting?

What’s your goal? We created a hashtag, #ImACybersmiler, and you can make videos and share your stories to show people that you’re not alone, and we can support one another. Knowing that you’re not alone really does make all the difference in the world. I never, ever want to go back to that other place again where I worry about those ugly comments and people who  hate. I’m just going to be me.

I felt like a weight had been lifted. And I got so much love. Keke Palmer, Zendaya, a bunch of my friends — they were all texting me, making sure that I was OK and giving me advice. It really did open my eyes to see that people do genuinely care about me. I don’t know how many times I heard, “Normani, I’m here to support you.” They came to our shows and made signs. The whole stadium was filled with posters saying, normani, we love you! Once Twitter was gone, I felt a lot more present, not always looking to ei see what people supportive,” Kord “My girls were so ates Cabello, Dinah were sayi ndm (center) says of ba en Jauregui and Ally me. 1 In a large pot, bring 5 quarts water and 3 tbsp salt to a boil. Add the pasta and cook, stirring, until just al dente, about 1 minute less than the package directions. Scoop out and reserve 1 cup of the pasta water before draining the pasta. 2 Meanwhile, in a large skillet over high heat, add the olive oil and mushrooms in an even layer. Cook without stirring until well browned, about 2 minutes. Flip the mushrooms and add the Swiss chard and garlic. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the Swiss chard wilts and the garlic becomes fragrant, about 2 minutes. 3 Add the pasta and reserved pasta water and cook, stirring, 30 seconds. Remove from heat. Engelman notes the drop in air humidity is to blame for scaliness on elbows, knees and feet. For a quick fix, she suggests applying urea cream, which penetrates the deepest layers of skin to attract and retain water, twice daily for one week.

OPENS FRIDAY 10/7

The Girl on the Train Here’s the real mystery: How did a spine-tingling bestseller turn into a foggy melodrama that’s devoid of suspense? The girl on the train is Rachel (Emily Blunt), a lonely alcoholic who rides the Metro-North Railroad with a faraway look in her eyes. Every day, she glimpses out at a seemingly perfect couple who live on the same street as her ex (Justin Theroux), his new wife and their baby. Then Rachel wakes up caked in blood. She can’t recall what happened, and the unknown woman (Haley Bennett) is missing. Perhaps that setup would carry more heft if the suspects weren’t all miserable enigmas. Even Blunt, though a sympathetic sad sack, spends the movie stumbling around and whispering. Ugh. Despite her unreliable narration, don’t expect a Gone Girl–like twist: Anyone can see the silly climax approaching from miles away. MARA REINSTEIN 56

The Birth of a Nation

Turner (Parker, second from right) organized the charge in Virginia.

At the Sundance Film Festival in January, Nate Parker received two standing ovations for directing, cowriting, financing and starring in this searing true story about an infamous slave uprising. He’s been embroiled in scandal since then, but there’s no denying this is a powerful piece of filmmaking. In 1831, Nat Turner (Parker) — who worked for a vicious plantation owner (Armie Hammer in one of many stock roles) — led a rebellion. The carnage was brutal, while the penalties were severe. Better movies will come along this year; few will pack this kind of wallop. MR

Divorce Carrie Bradshaw, meet Frances DuFresne. Headlining her first series since 1998–2004’s frothy Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker plays another romantically challenged New Yorker. In this more acerbic comedy, Frances (Parker), an executive recruiter and mother of two, blurts to stuffy husband Robert (Thomas Haden Church): “I don’t love you anymore — I want a divorce.” Mining laughs, or fresh insight, from a skidding marriage is a tall order,

but so far Divorce only shows promise. The show’s tone does, however, lack consistency: Frances’ affair with cheesy commitmentphobe Julian (Jemaine Clement, miscast) is more odd than wry. And with Church hamming it up as the scorned man (plus Saturday Night Live alum Molly Shannon as a live-wire pal), the overly earnest Parker could go lighter. The actress is best in blunt mode, as when Frances tells Robert she once got so angry with him, she was ready to smash a Japanese cat figurine and “scalp you with one of the shards.” Ouch! Goliath A suspicious suicide. A ruthless corporation. A scrappy hero out to find the link. This intelligent drama from David E. Kelley hooks viewers as deftly as a John Grisham novel. In a terrific performance, Billy Bob Thornton disarms as Billy McBride, a once-idealistic L.A. lawyer nursing his personal wounds with booze and cynicism. As he helps a woman look into her brother’s death, a conspiracy emerges, each puzzle piece more enticing than the last. Though Billy’s life is a mess (his ex-wife works for the bad guys!), Goliath is a refreshingly straightforward whydunit. (Amazon Prime, all eight episodes available) JG

Even Stranger Things? An NYC security pro (David Ajala), detective (Will Yun Lee) and trend spotter (Lizzie Brocheré) have bizarre overlapping dreams that verge on reality. For Brocheré’s Tess, visions of a boy convince her she once gave birth — yet doctors say that’s impossible. Heavy on atmosphere, Water doesn’t frustrate like some paranormal dramas. It fascinates. And the terrifying entity revealed in the last scene only adds to the intrigue. (USA, 10 P.M.) JG
