Dear Neighbor, On Thursday October 14th, we will be hosting a very important community meeting to discuss an issue that has been largely ignored in Hoboken. Spectra Energy, a Texas-based gas company, wants to build a major natural gas pipeline expansion that will run through the heart of Hudson County. Our area will bear tremendous risks with no reward, all for the benefit of New York City gas customers. Natural gas pipelines are prone to high-risk leaks that are released as either fine mists or toxic spray. Most dangerously, they can result in explosions and fires that can do significant damage to property and life. We saw an example of that last month in San Bruno, California, where a natural gas pipeline exploded, destroying an entire neighborhood, killing 8 people and injuring many others. pipeline in our area, but in neighboring Jersey City, residents have organized to form a group called No Gas Pipeline (nogaspipeline.org). They have been raising awareness about the dangers of natural gas pipelines and have been calling on their neighbors and public officials to join their effort. We have invited No Gas Pipeline founder Dale Hardman to speak to concerned Hoboken residents about the real dangers of a gas pipeline running through our neighborhoods. This is an important issue that deserves your attention.
