MUSEUM OF ART
A PERFECT LEGACY In honor of a great man, a great community spirit, and a great friend to the Hockaday, we are proud to dedicate our 2015 Annual Report to Dr. Van Kirke Nelson. Thoughout his 50+ years in the Flathead, Dr. Nelson never waivered from a commitment to respect people, serve others before himself, and do good. His generosity and giving spirit was reflected in everything he did. His efforts touched the lives of tens of thousands, through his support of a multitude of charitable causes. Dr. Nelson’s passion for art allowed him to become one of the preeminent Western art collectors in the country, and the Hockaday has been an ongoing benefactor of that passion and his philanthropy. Several major pieces of the Hockaday’s permanent art collection came from Dr. and Helen Nelson, or by their hands. His unwavering dedication to this Museum has carried it through difficult financial times, and helped herald an era of growth and accomplishment.

March 2016,
Coupled with “A Timeless Legacy” these two events became the basis for “The Van Kirke Nelson Hockaday Program and Art Acquisition Fund”. With over forty Founding Circle Members, the fund is still growing. A most generous gift from the Howard Trust has provided the most financial stability in years. Plus, the permanent collection has been expanded as a result of a number of wonderful donations.
“To enrich the cultural life of our community and region, and preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park.”
All these accomplishments are due to a hardworking staff and great volunteers. We thank Liz Moss for her contributions over the past five years, and to Barry Conger who has done a fine job as Interim Director. Special thanks to our Board, especially Randy Ogle, Laura Ennis, Michael Barry, Joe Abbrescia Jr., and Jim Kuhlman (President for 3 years) …all who served two terms and will be leaving the Board.
Education remains as a major focus of the Hockaday…. last year we interfaced with over 8000 children in the museum and in schools. Thanks to our corporate sponsors, all schools in the Flathead Valley are members of the Museum and eligible for free admission and our outreach programs. Special recognition to Kathy Martin, our head of education, who just celebrated ten years at the Hockaday. The exhibition schedule completed by the Hockaday Team always amazes me and we thank the participating artists. There were fifteen different exhibits including two member shows and the elementary and the high school exhibits. Two years in the making, “A Timeless Legacy, Women Artists of Glacier National Park” was the highlight of the year. I would be remiss not to thank Tabby Ivy, Denny Kellogg and Liz Moss for developing the concept and curating the show. Another volunteer, Ed Gillenwater, created a DVD soon to be aired on Montana PBS. While we were saddened by the passing of Dr. Van Kirke Nelson, we fondly remember the Hockaday exhibit of his and Helen’s personal collection in 2014.

MUSEUM OF ART
When the Hockaday Center for the Arts was established at the end of 1968, it was a place for the local artist community to gather and display art together, and to showcase the amazing talents of these artists in their midst.
ARTISTIC LEGACIES
Over our long history, the Hockaday Museum of Art’s mission has evolved, and we have become committed to preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park and build a strong permanent art collection. But we have never lost sight of what is at the core of everything we do – the artists that support this Museum. We are blessed to live in a place with a spectacular artist community, and we at the Hockaday are honored to be a place where some of that talent can be showcased and celebrated.

School tours comprise the largest segment of Hockaday visitors. Over 2,200 students were able to see art close up and personal during their visits to the museum. Education Memberships allow schools to participate in tours, post tour art lessons, and student exhibitions. Local schools unable to fund their memberships were provided with one through the generosity of Park Side Credit Union, Glacier Bank, and First Interstate Bank.

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS The Van Kirk Nelson Hockaday Program and Art Acquisition Fund Recognizing a Treasured Legacy
In June of 2015 the Hockaday created a fund to honor Dr. Van Kirke Nelson. Van Kirke was a dear friend to many institutions and people in the Flathead Valley. It is hard to quantify the decades of support that Van Kirke and his family gave to the Hockaday. He and his family believed in the importance of a permanent art collection and they made significant contributions to the Museum, including a famous watercolor by Charles M. Russell titled “Young Boy.” The support that the Nelson family has given the Hockaday is recognized with the creation of this Fund. The Hockaday is honored and humbled by the response we have received from the families listed below, who applauded the Museum’s recognition of Van Kirke Nelson. The purpose of the Fund is to provide additional support for Hockaday programs and exhibitions, and to provide the means to purchase additional works for the Hockaday’s Permanent Art Collection. Members are the backbone of our Museum. The support of our membership is one of the key ways that we are able to do what we do. Membership dues form the core of our operational funding, and our members are frequent volunteers, consistent guests at our functions, and serve as the mouthpiece to spread the words about all things Hockaday. A vision of art When the Flathead Valley Art Association was formed in 1968, their mission was to find a home for an arts center to serve the Flathead. Their dedicated work resulted in the City of Kalispell providing the Carnegie Library building, built in 1904. In April, 1969, the Hockaday Center for the Arts opened, named after Hugh Hockaday, one of the Art Association members.

WHO WE ARE
2015 ANNUAL REPORT
14
We are one organism, a cohesive team working together to elevate the art and artists around us, and to provide the public with the most incredible visitor experience possible. We work hard, and we enjoy what we do.
Barry Conger I have had the privilege of serving as the Interim Executive Director at the Hockaday for most of 2015, after working as Development Director and Event Coordinator for two years. When I am not relishing the art on the walls here, I relish spending time with my beautiful wife and three fantastic children. Sharon Staso In my past life, I was a Senior Accountant at YRCW (international side) in the Kansas City area. I love hiking and snow skiing, so a dream of mine was to live in the mountains. I also love to be around art. Working at the Hockaday and living in the Valley couldn’t be better, a far cry from the Midwest, corporate life. At the Museum I handle a variety of duties so there is rarely a dull moment! It’s always exciting to see what exhibition will be coming and what event is coming up next.
Kathy Martin As Director of Education, I manage and develop education programs that promote the Museum’s mission. I am as passionate about sharing art and the role it plays in connecting people with communities, other cultures, and the natural world. My Museum activities include organizing and teaching art classes, guiding tours, bringing outreach programs to schools, and coordinating the docent program. I am also a practicing artist, former classroom teacher, and I have worked at the Hockaday Museum for over 10 years. Celinda English I am the Hockaday’s Administrative Assistant and love every aspect of my job. My background is in fashion and costume design with a strong background in art history. I enjoy being the first person folks see when they come through the door and I am an enthusiastic fan of every part of this loveable museum. It is an honor to assist the fabulous team we have here. We are all working to make this Museum an important part of the Flathead cultural community.
Brian Eklund As Director of Communications for the last seven years at the Hockaday, I creates and distributes messaging for all events, exhibitions, fundraisers and educational programming through press releases, public service announcements, social media, email campaigns and website content updates. I have a B.S. in Electronics Engineering Technology and worked at Hewlett-Packard for fifteen years before returning to my native Montana. “The Additional Staff Member” The Hockaday runs a lean ship. We have five staff who keep every aspect of the Museum working and growing. With 12-14 annual exhibitions, 10+ opening receptions, 4 major events, countless special programs, plus classes, school tours, and outreach programming, it wouldn’t be possible to do all that we do without an unlisted member of our staff: Our Volunteers. The incredible people who donate their time to the Hockaday are our treasured resource. We are happy to pause and say thank you to all of those who leant us a needed hand this year. Your work is a treasure to us and you elevate everything that we do.

A special thank you to a tireless volunteer. Joann Sleadd grew up in Illinois and Missouri and was a plein air painter before she even knew that name. After owning photography businesses in California, she retired with her husband Robert to New Mexico, where she studied with several famous artists. While living in Mexico, Joann studied art at Bellas Arte in San Miguel de Allende and showed her paintings at the E’guenia Gallery of Art. Moving to the Flathead, Joann quickly discovered the Hockaday Museum of Art. For over ten years, Joann has served as a docent, volunteer and artist, supporting the Hockaday with contributions of her time, knowledge and artistic
All of us extend a sincere thanks to Joann. Her impact on the Museum has helped us in more ways than we could possibly list. Thank you, Joann!!

talent. She has enhanced the Museum experience for hundreds of visitors by conveying easyto-understand information about exhibitions in ways that patrons can easily process. Joann has also frequently volunteered her time to help with projects, opening reception duties, and just about anything else we asked! She and her husband Bob have long been volunteers at our Arts in the Park Festival in July. Joann has been a popular guest artist for several “Crits & Croissants” artists’ critique sessions at the Museum. Her insights and talents have benefited many artists. Joann has participated in a majority of Hockaday benefit auctions and Members’ Salon exhibitions, always generous with her talents to help the Museum raise funds for its operations and programs.
