THIS IS HOCKEY EAST

THIS IS HOCKEY EAST The Hockey East women’s league celebrates its 19th season of play in 2020-21. Over the first 18 years, the league has emerged as one of the top women’s ice hockey conferences in the nation, having sent 11 teams to the Frozen Four and 26 teams to the NCAA Tournament. In 2011 and 2013, both Boston College and Boston University advanced to the women’s Frozen Four, and the Terriers moved on to the NCAA championship game on both occasions. As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current position as an established NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East needed to consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that initially had varsity programs for women: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence. Discussions about this proposed league continued until a split in the Eastern College Athletic Conference grouped the five aforementioned programs into a separate league alongside three other unaffiliated programs. This newly formed eight-team division was dubbed the ECAC Women’s Eastern League. Seeking league solidarity, administrators from the five Hockey East institutions acted almost immediately to create a new conference. In September of 2001, the long-incubated idea became a reality when the athletic directors voted to found the new women’s league under the existing Hockey East banner, with play scheduled to begin no later than the 2004-05 season. The five schools with varsity programs entered as charter members with the stipulation that any other Hockey East school that added a varsity women’s program in the future would be freely admitted to the league. In 2015-16, Hockey East welcomed Merrimack to the women’s ranks under that clause, before adding Holy Cross as its 10th member in 2018-19. Expediting the process in the interest of the participating teams, the league, and the sport itself, Commissioner Joe Bertagna worked with a selected task force to successfully prepare the Hockey East women’s league for launch in the 2002-03 season, two years ahead of schedule. An important part of that process was the acceptance of an invitation extended to the University of Connecticut to join the newly formed league as its sixth active member. The triumphant effort immediately afforded the participating administrators a stronger voice in the advancement of their women’s ice hockey programs and alleviated the ECAC of continuing the maintenance of the ECAC Women’s Eastern League. Players, fans, coaches and administrators alike anticipated the intensified competition created by a new circle of teams that had already been such familiar rivals. In 2005, the Hockey East women’s league welcomed the addition of two additional teams to its growing family: Boston University and the University of Vermont. For BU, it marked the inaugural season for women’s hockey as a varsity sport. The league athletic directors voted in June of 2012 to expand the playoff format, allowing all eight teams within the conference to qualify for the playoffs beginning after the 2012-13 regular season. The significant jump was contrasted with six teams and four teams in previous seasons. In February 2007, the league debuted its inaugural “Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer”. The one-day event was hosted by Hockey East schools as a way to establish a greater fan base, to raise needed funds, and to work with the specific charities to raise awareness for both the league and the specific cause. In the initial year, close to $20,000 was donated back to local breast cancer charities Friends of Mel’s Foundation and the American Cancer Society, vastly exceeding expectations. In the 2018-19 season, the league raised over $30,000 to bring the 10-year total to nearly $400,000. “Skating Strides” has won two national awards at NACMA in the “Single Day Attendance Promotion” category in 2007 and 2009, and in 2016 former Associate Commissioner Kathy Wynters was honored at the one hundred, a fundraising and awareness initiative that honors those that have displayed a commitment to fighting cancer. In 2020, the Northeastern Huskies captured their third consecutive Hockey East Tournament title. As the Hockey East Tournament Champion, Northeastern was presented with the renamed Bertagna Trophy in honor of the Women’s Hockey East conference’s founding commissioner Joe Bertagna.

22

A record 175 student-athletes were named to the league’s 201920 All-Academic Team. Each student-athlete achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better in each of the two academic periods during which she was actively competing. Additionally, 12 players earned the prestigious honor of being named Hockey East’s Top Scholar-Athlete, compiling a perfect 4.0 GPA for the season. Those players include UConn’s Catherine Crawley (Washingtonville, N.Y.), Morgan Fisher (Vernon, Conn.), and Coryn Tormala (Sussex, Wis.), Merrimack’s Léa-Kristine Demers (Repentigny, Que.), and Katie Kaufman (Lake Elmo, Minn.), New Hampshire’s Nikki Harnett (Plymouth, Minn.), Northeastern’s Megan Carter (Milton, Ont.), and Matti Hartman (Etna, N.H.), Providence’s Chole Gonsalves (Toronto, Ont.), Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.), and Giana Savastano (Mapleville, R.I.), and Vermont’s Anna Erickson (Stillwater, Minn.) For the first time, these 12 players also comprise the entirety of the 2019-20 All-Academic All Star Team, comprised of the students with the highest GPA at their respective positions. Eighteen players reached “Distinguished Scholar” status in 2019-20, having qualified for the All-Academic team in each of four seasons of varsity play, while another 24 are three-time honorees. While the Hockey East women’s league continues to grow, adding Holy Cross as its 10th member in 2018-19, its member programs have storied histories that include several championships and individual awards at the highest levels of play. The first 13 ECAC championships were shared among New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence, all charter members of the Women’s Hockey East Association. Northeastern forward Brooke Whitney was named the recipient of the 2002 Patty Kazmaier Award as the nation’s top female collegiate player, an honor first won by New Hampshire’s Brandy Fisher in 1998. Had the award been in existence beforehand, it surely would have been won at some point by Cammi Granato, a three-time ECAC Player of the Year who led Providence to back-to-back championships in 1992 and 1993. Five years later, in 1998, alongside nine other alums of what are now Hockey East women’s league programs, Granato captained Team USA to the Olympic gold medal during the first Olympic tournament that featured women’s ice hockey as a medal sport. Granato was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in October of 2010 for her contributions to the sport. Beginning in 2009, the HEA athletic directors voted to honor the league Player of the Year with the Cammi Granato Award. Perhaps the proudest legacy that the Hockey East women’s league has established is the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The most prestigious off-ice honor, and arguably the highest overall honor in the sport, the Hockey Humanitarian Award recognizes college hockey’s finest citizen each year and encompasses both male and female athletes in all divisions. Its winners have demonstrated outstanding contributions to society through leadership in charity work and volunteerism. Northeastern senior forward Missy Elumba was the 2009 recipient, as the fifth Hockey East student-athlete to receive the prestigious honor. Elumba was the 14th all-time recipient and joined former Husky goaltender Chanda Gunn, who received the award in 2004, as the second athlete in Northeastern women’s hockey history. BC’s Sarah Carlson received the award in 2005, making Women’s Hockey East the first league to boast back-to-back winners. #

COMMISSIONER

COMMISSIONER STEVE METCALF

Steve Metcalf, who has spent over two decades in athletic administration at the University of New Hampshire, was named the fifth commissioner of the Hockey East Association on February 17, 2020. A member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee since 2015 and currently its chair, Metcalf has served as the Wildcats’ deputy director of athletics for the past 10 years. Metcalf replaced Joe Bertagna, who closed out the longest commissioner tenure in Hockey East history at the end of his 23rd season in the spring of 2020. “Simply put, Steve is a connector whose knowledge of hockey and our league is outstanding,” said Drew Marrochello, current chair of the Hockey East men’s executive committee and director of athletics at Boston University. “He has made strong impressions in several different circles during his time at UNH, and it was a true consensus decision to bring him on as our next commissioner. “We will all benefit from his wealth of experience in Hockey East as his strengths work well with our external populations, helping to illuminate our great product along with our community of coaches and administrators.” In the deputy role, Metcalf oversaw all internal operations within the UNH athletic department as well as both 44

ice hockey programs. He assisted with daily administration of all 20 of the Wildcats’ intercollegiate programs, including hiring of coaches, personnel management, budgeting priorities, fundraising initiatives, and monitoring of gender equity and diversity within the department. “I would like to thank the search committee for giving me this incredible opportunity to lead such a prestigious conference,” said Metcalf. “I couldn’t be more excited to get started and build on relationships throughout the great institutions that make up Hockey East. I would also like to acknowledge Joe Bertagna for his leadership over the past 23 years, leading this conference to where we are today. He has contributed so much to the game of college hockey. “My time at UNH has been rewarding on so many levels and I want to recognize director of athletics Marty Scarano for his mentorship and friendship during my time there.” In recent years, Metcalf spent a significant amount of time working on various capital projects totaling over $50 million, including construction of Wildcat Stadium. He also oversaw event management and all UNH-hosted conference and NCAA championships. Under his leadership, UNH served as the host for three NCAA Women’s Frozen Fours and eight NCAA men’s ice hockey regional championships. “I have known Steve for nearly two decades and have always enjoyed working with him,” said Bertagna. “He knows both the conference and the NCAA, and he will do a good job for the member institutions and the game of college hockey.” At the conference and national level, Metcalf has served as chair for five significant committees, including those for NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey, women’s ice

hockey and national collegiate skiing. He recently completed his second two-year term as chair of the America East Championships and Competition Committee, of which he has been a member since 2000. From 2006-08, Metcalf was the chair of the Women’s Hockey East Association Executive Committee. Metcalf has also collaborated with NCAA staff to attract championship events to both UNH and to other locations in the New England region, including the 2015 and 2022 Frozen Four tournaments to Boston. “Hockey East will continue to grow and advance with Steve Metcalf as its new commissioner,” said Kristin Fasbender, the NCAA’s director of championships and alliances. “He has the unique experience of being the chair of both the men’s and women’s NCAA ice hockey committees, and his tireless contributions throughout the sport have been noticed by many. I’ve had the great opportunity of working with Steve throughout my 20 years in NCAA hockey and I look forward to continue working with him in this role.” Metcalf was born in England and holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from UNH. He and his wife Diane, who is the deputy athletic director and senior woman administrator at Merrimack College, have two daughters, Lauren and Sienna.

With Hockey East’s rights centralized, live and on-demand content from the league’s 12 member institutions became more accessible to fans across the league, and North America, than ever before. During his time with Hockey East, Smith has revitalized the digital presence of the conference by revamping the league website, HockeyEastOnline.com, multiple times and growing its social media channels to develop the most heavily followed accounts in all of college hockey. Smith also served as the main media contact for the 2015 Frozen Four, hosted by Hockey East and the TD Garden, and has assisted in the successful execution of the Friendship Four Tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Frozen Fenway events. Prior to joining the conference in July 2014, Smith spent two years with USA Hockey as the Brian Fishman Intern, a prestigious program that develops young professionals in the athletic communications business. Dividing his time with USA Hockey between the national office in Colorado Springs, Colorado and the National Team Development Program, then located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Smith traveled extensively while assisting in numerous international tournaments as the main media contact for U.S. national teams. While with the NTDP, Smith served as the main media contact for both the U.S. National Under-17 and Under-18 teams. Additionally, Smith played an integral role in the execution of the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies. INDIVIDUAL HOCKEY EAST AWARDS The Warrior Cammi Granato Player of the Year Award, renamed in 2008 to honor former Providence College superstar Cammi Granato, is awarded annually by the head coaches to a player who has demonstrated the most superior play and leadership for her team. Granato had a legendary career, establishing many scoring records for the Friars (139 goals in 99 games). She captured ECAC Player of the Year honors from 1991-93, while leading the team to back-toback conference titles in 1992 and 1993. A 15-year member of the U.S. Women’s National Tea,, Granato is the program’s all-time scoring leader. She achieved international fame by captaining Team USA to the gold medal at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games.

Mueller appeared in each game the Huskies have played during the season, leading all Hockey East players in nearly every overall scoring category, including goals (25), assists (45), points (60), goals per game (0.69), assists per game (0.97), points per game (1.67), shorthanded goals (3), game-winning goals (9), shots on goal (193), and shots on goal per game (5.36.) PATTY KAZMAIER AWARD

HOCKEY HUMANITARIAN

The CCM All-American Teams are selected annually by the American Hockey Coaches Association, they are announced at the end of the season at the Women’s Frozen Four.

Presented annually since 1997-98 to the top player in women’s college ice hockey, the Patty Kazmaier Award was first won by Brandy Fisher of UNH. Below is a list of Hockey East Top 10 finalists, with winners in bold.

Arguably the highest individual honor in the sport of college ice hockey, the Hockey Humanitarian Award bridges any gender gap between the men’s and women’s game as well as any perceived talent gap between divisions. Annually presented to the athlete that best demonstrates the highest qualities of humanity, the award has become a symbol for everything that is right with college athletics, and it is an honor just to be nominated for the award, or to be selected as one of the annual finalists.
