Best of indoor prepare for Northam exposure
The very best of Australian indoor hockey will showcase the sport at its peak in Northam when the Hockey WA Indoor Classic, supported by the Shire of Northam, commences this Saturday 8 October
The two-day event, to be held at the Northam Recreation Centre and – thanks to funding from the Australian Sports commission run through Sport Australia’s Regional Sports Event Fund, will see eight teams four in the men’s and four in the women’s competition compete in an elite level competition featuring some of the state’s brightest indoor talent, including national indoor representatives.
The competition, emulating Hockey WA’s highly-successful Ric Charlesworth Classic, will put indoor hockey in the spotlight and provide an opportunity the players will relish, says National Indoor goalkeeper Elizabeth Duguid
“It’s really exciting for indoor. The Ric Charlesworth Classic for outdoor has been a success, so I’m really keen to see that translate into the indoor format,” Duguid says.
“For me personally, I see it as a huge opportunity to raise the profile of indoor hockey here in WA and I know all the players are super keen to get out there.
“I’m excited to see what Northam has to offer and I think it is important to be able to bring these events to areas across the state it gives the sport more exposure than ever before.”
The host region of the competition, Northam, presents a wonderful boost to regional hockey, one that star indoor player Ross Hall says is much needed for the indoor format across WA
“It’s a fantastic centre up in Northam, the Shire has done a fantastic job up there,” Hall said.
“It’s a great opportunity to get a decent crowd out and boost our regional outreach and hopefully inspire a bunch of people to get involved in the indoor format.”
The Hockey WA Indoor Classic gets underway on Saturday 8-9 October, with the Suns, Breakers, Highlanders and Outbacks teams set to clash in a blockbuster weekend of action
Attendance is free and all spectators are welcome to attend, with matches kicking off from 9am Saturday and 8am Sunday.
