ChestRad – experts at follow ups.
I should like to thank all our sponsors, ChestRad, Australian Orthopaedic Association, Perth Urology Clinic, Genesis Care, Perth Radiological Clinic, Pancho’s Mexican Villa Restaurant, Heart Foundation, Medical Forum and Hockey WA. I should also like to thank our many volunteers for making this day possible.
This is the seventh year of the Bionic Challenge between players with Artificial Hips and Artificial Knees. This annual event has become iconic and showcases that with great surgery and correct rehab we can continue to live active lives.
For the second year we have a match between Cancer Survivors and Heart Conditions including triple by-passes. This again showcases the benefits of modern medicine together with the power of the body and mind to overcome serious health issues.
New to our Gala Day is an event between two teams of ladies who have benefitted from modern medicine. They will be competing for the ChestRad Challenge Cup.
For the first time in Australia we have two teams of eighty year olds, all from WA, competing for the ChestRad OBE Challenge Cup. This challenge emphasizes the benefits of continuing to play sport, and of course socializing.
I hope everyone enjoys the day and continue to support the sport they love.

President of the AOA, Dr Chris Morrey said that the inaugural women’s match highlights the quality of life improvements available to joint replacement patients regardless of age or gender.
“We are thrilled to see the expansion of the day and welcome the introduction of a female event to be sponsored by AOA’s Orthopaedic Women’s Link (OWL). The success of the hockey gala day to date and the diverse opportunities that can be created moving forward are a testament to the event organisers and WA Hockey.
“The gala day provides a celebration of the wonder of movement and what is possible after undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery and the importance of rehabilitation,” Dr Morrey said.
The event which began in 2016 with 15 knee replacement patients playing against 15 hip replacement patients has been such a success that the event has turned into a Gala Day featuring multiple hockey matches, including the a heart vs cancer match, who compete to hoist the ‘Survivors Cup’ and for 2022 the inaugural women’s game.

“For those that have had joint replacement surgery, to be able to play in such a spectacle is great for the sport and the quality of life that one can experience thanks to these important operations.” Ross said.
