STARS SET TO SHINE IN HIGH-ENERGY RIC CHARLESWORTH CLASSIC The 2022 Ric Charlesworth Classic, presented by Brightside Live, is set to deliver another high-energy edition of Hockey WA’s flagship tournament featuring WA’s best from Saturday 26 March at Perth Hockey Stadium at Curtin University. 160 players are ready to fight for glory for the Breakers, Highlanders, Outbacks and Suns, with this year’s edition featuring a range of talent from WA’s elite-level open-age side, the Perth Thundersticks, junior high-performance athletes and Premier League stars. This year’s tournament runs across a seven-day period, with the action kicking off on Saturday 26 March, with a bumper day of hockey action featuring all eight teams across four matches. Men’s Suns Captain, Tim Geers, said the competition now plays a crucial role in preparation for the upcoming hockey season as well as giving young talent an opportunity to shine on the big stage. “It’s an exciting competition to compete in and it gives players the chance to get some sharpness before the Premier League gets underway,” Geers said. “Across the competition there’s a great mix of youth, established players and experienced stars. “I know we’ve got an amazing group, with the likes of young star Cam Geddes, up and coming under-18s such as Brodie Hiskins and Mitch McGrath, then there’s ex-national players such as Tim Deavin who represented the kookaburras.” Ex-Hockeyroo and Highlanders representative, Edwina Bone, shared Geers’ sentiment, stating it’s an exciting way for players to prepare and compete at a high-level – an opportunity most players don’t have in other states. “It’s an exciting way to kick off the 2022 season – I know a lot of players have worked really hard with their clubs to get match ready, so it’s a great platform for players to show off all their hard work,” Bone said. “There’s a lot of benefits to have such a high-level competition be exposed to a range of different players. “Players such as the under-18s who are soon to head off to the National Championships can hit the field and try some new things, so it’s really beneficial to them.” Entry to the Ric Charlesworth Classic is $5 – kids under 18 free.

HOCKEY HEROES READY TO SOAR FOR UPCOMING CLASSIC With some of Australia’s best hockey players preparing for the Ric Charlesworth Classic, presented by Brightside Live – it’s time for a look at who can make a big difference on the pitch in the women's competition. What team will win this year? Will it be the Breakers who go back-to-back? Or will the Suns, Outbacks or Highlanders take home this year’s title? Line Malan Hailing from South Africa - Line Malan might just be one of the finest import pickups a club has ever had. Hale hit the jackpot with her speed, hockey smarts and on-ball skills... not slowing down any time soon, even after being ruled out just a few years ago with a serious achilles injury. She made her senior debut for South Africa in 2014, despite a number of setbacks along the way. Malan will be a huge part of the Breakers attack, being part of their success in last year's tournament. Jade Vanderzwan The young gun that just keeps giving. Jade Vanderzwan offers what a lot of players want - grit. She's flourished as a player since moving to Raiders last year, even being given a few opportunities at the national junior level to shine. The Suns will look to use her as a speedy, skilled young player. Vanderzwan will have also recently returned from a Jillaroos camp, and after training with WAIS all off season, there's no doubt about her fitness and touch. Rachel Frusher The 2019 Charlesworth Medallist could potentially lead the Outbacks to success. Having a big presence at the backline, Frusher is also a great leader with an extensive hockey knowledge. She’s able to find gaps in presses to give killer midfield balls – even sometimes skipping that line altogether and hitting the forward in a good spot to break away. She’s been part of the Victoria Park side which has won back-to-back premierships in the past two years & is one to watch this year. Elizabeth Duguid Lizzie Duguid is a huge component of the Highlanders line up. Knowing she'll be there if an opposing forward breaks through is comforting and confidence-boosting for defenders. With lightning-fast reflexes and a surprisingly wide reach - strikers will have to really work Lizzie to get the ball past her. She’s without a doubt one of the best goalies in WA – and having strength from the back is an asset for the Highlanders going forward.

ELITE-LEVEL MEN'S TALENT SET TO DRIVE SIDES TO GLORY IN CLASSIC OUTING With some of Australia’s best hockey players preparing for the Ric Charlesworth Classic – it’s time for a look at who can make a big difference on the pitch. What team will win the men’s competition this year? Angus Adamson Youth is one of the biggest advantages for Angus Adamson. This young gun has plenty left to learn, but he's also advanced far beyond his age. After getting the call up to the Kookaburras numbers in the Fortescue Challenge... it is clear he's going to be crucial for the Breakers. He can score goals, something essential in hockey in WA and in Australia as a whole. He’ll be one to watch in the Ric Charlesworth Classic as well as the upcoming Premier League and national tournaments. Tim Deavin Tim Deavin boasts a large hockey knowledge, and experience – while still having all the skills. The dualOlympian will bring leadership and strength to the Suns… the Tassie product also a crucial part of Fremantle’s side in the Premier League competition. He is strong defensively, while also having the skill and composure to play in the midfield. It will be interesting to see where he will line up for the Suns. Tom Harvie Tom Harvie may have a brother who plays for the Kookaburras, but he’s a great player all on his own merit. He hails from a long line of hockey royalty – and he’s no stranger to the game. Harvie plays well beyond his years and has a big presence on the field, which is a great addition to the Outbacks. He was named in the 2018 National Futures Program, and has continued to develop since. His height and hockey smarts together are lethal – and will be one to watch this RCC. Matt Lewis In 2019 Matt and his family moved to Australia, and one of the reasons behind that was to ensure he was given the best chance to pursue his hockey career. What a decision it was for them. Lewis is a standout in the club competition – and even donned the green and gold colours for the Fortescue Challenge. He’s got handy skills which will be huge for the Highlanders, and could be a key part of a potential title for the side.
