A DAY
Thank you to all the people that have made and continue to make Mt Pocono Rotary’s Annual Fly-in Drive-in Breakfast & Aviation Day a sensational success. From coordinators and an amazing group of men and women volunteering their time and talent; to our generous sponsors like Grace Park who’ve embraced the opportunity to not only pledge their support for the Rotary and Monroe County Special Olympics, but also be a part of this magnificent Memorial Weekend experience. Please take time to share your Fly-in photos and send some applause for those who’ve helped the cause.

t began nearly 22 years ago with intentions of introducing the wonders of aviation to the public; today, Community Aviation Day Fly-In Breakfast has evolved to be one of Mt. Pocono Rotary’s largest annual fundraisers with over $130,000 raised to date. Hosted by Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport, this popular pause to applaud propellers (and the like) embraces the opportunity to share how to get involved with
flying for our area youth while also fostering funds for non-profits and deserving causes throughout the community. Held rain or shine 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday May 28, proceeds will benefit the Rotary and Monroe County Special Olympics. The Sky’s the Limit on generosity as Rotarians and volunteers serve up a scrumptious pancake breakfast filled with food courtesy of Bailey’s, Smuggler’s Cove and
Shoprite. Adult $10 tickets and $6 for kids ages 12 and under, as well as airplane and helicopter rides donated by Moyer Aviation, Hi-Tech Helicopters and Papillon Moyer Excavation add in fundraising with corporate sponsorship setting the stage for sensational results. Event Co-Chair, Mark Turner shares how a focus on fun bears no boundaries noting “Each year we try to add to the day’s events that include

the pancake breakfast, airplane and helicopter rides, children’s activities and military, public safety and car displays,” adding, “We also have a parachute jump that follows our tribute to veterans.” He smiles, “Sponsorship space and ads in our new program booklet will be distributed to the day’s attendees that last year topped over 1200 served at the breakfast alone,”
Adding, “A digital version will be posted on the web and in social media,” he proposes, “Let’s show the athletes of Monroe County Special Olympics we’re rooting for them as they head off to States and continue to excel in everything they do.”

Now in its 18th year of training, Monroe County Chapter of Special Olympics Pennsylvania provides year-round sports training and competitions for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Individuals over the age of eight may train and compete, with no one told they’re ever too old to participate in some way.
With a belief through sports training and competition, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually; Special Olympics families are strengthened. Community bonds form as participation and observation unite all in the understanding and acceptance of an environment forged in equality and respect.
Through the hard work and dedication of volunteers and generosity of area sponsors, nearly 140 registered athletes continue to benefit from this nonprofit organization.
Along with training athletes for competition, the local program is responsible for all fees incurred relating to competitive activities. From costs for equipment and uniforms; to event fees and traveling expenses. In-order to continue to provide necessary resources, fundraising remains a crucial part of its survival with proceeds raised by the local chapter remaining here to benefit these athletes of Monroe County.
MCSO Program Manager, Kerri Manning-Freeo notes, “Community Aviation Day is one week before our program leaves for Summer State Games at Penn State University’s State College campus June 1st, 2nd and 3rd,” smiling, “What a wonderful way to send our athletes off as they prepare to compete in Basketball, as well as Track and Field than to show their community supports them.”
