SONGS OF RESISTANCE: Protest Music and Dance From Around the World

Sunday, February 21, 2016, 3 p.m. John Cranford Adams Playhouse, South Campus

Join Hofstra’s Department of Music and the Hofstra Cultural Center as we present songs and dances that have inspired, motivated and brought together individuals to fight injustice, rally around a cause or demand a better life. The performance features the Hofstra Chamber Choir, the Hofstra Symphony Orchestra and small Jazz ensembles, the Hofstra spoken word club SP!T, Hofstra student dancers, the Select Ensemble from Hempstead High School and internationally acclaimed South African a cappella vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. … From enslaved Africans’ cries for freedom to the struggles for civil rights in the Americas and in Apartheid South Africa; … from oppressed workers’ demand for better wages and working conditions to immigrants’ longing for economic and social justice; … from these silenced souls pour forth SONGS; these shackled bodies erupt into DANCE. This concert celebrates their voices.

All groups sponsored by local schools will receive free tickets and an educational supplement.

This performance is made possible by a generous grant from the D’Addario Music Foundation (D’Addario Music Appreciation Initiative), Hofstra University Department of Music and the Hofstra Cultural Center, as well as support from the Hofstra University Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, Hofstra University Honors College, Division of Student Affairs Office of Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion, Hofstra University Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program and African Studies Program, Hofstra University Department of Anthropology, Hofstra University Office of Admission, and Hofstra University Center for Civic Engagement.
