HOFSTRA WELCOME WEEK 2016

Welcome to Hofstra University! As one of the newest members of the Hofstra family, you — and thousands of other students — now have access to campus resources, over 200 student clubs and organizations, and the many social, cultural and career opportunities of the New York metropolitan area. We have planned an exciting week filled with programs and activities that will help you get better acquainted with Hofstra’s campus and become an engaged and involved student. Please look through this program and plan your Welcome Week by selecting events that interest you. Be sure not to miss the “Pride” events. You must have your HofstraCard with you at all times. You will need it for identification, meal/snack purchases (if you have a dining plan), and entry into events and residence halls (if you live on campus). This week, sophomores, juniors and seniors will serve as your Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs). WWLs will assist you during move-in, help run programs and events, and lead discussions. Take time to get to know your leader and build friendships with your group members! And, most important, have fun!

HOFSTRA WELCOME WEEK 2016

About Our Welcome Week Coordinators Jaden de Guzman ‘17 Senior music education major Jaden de Guzman reprises her role as programming coordinator to bring the Class of 2020 the best Welcome Week ever! Described as hungry, koala-like, and kind-of-creative-in-a-weird-way, Jaden’s eclectic set of skills allows her to be an active and engaged member of the Hofstra and local communities. During her time at Hofstra, she has had the pleasure of performing with the Hofstra Chorale, Chamber Choir, Big Band, Indian Music Ensemble, and Recorder Ensemble. Her involvement with the Church of Christ in Bellmore has really helped her make a home on Long Island. Originally from Miami, Florida, Jaden believes that her love for buffalo chicken pizza, assertive (maybe aggressive) driving, and third year of residency qualifies her as a real New Yorker. She is so excited to introduce new, incoming students to the wide and wonderful world that is Hofstra University.

Janelle Oppenheim ‘17 The first time Janelle Oppenheim stepped onto Hofstra’s campus on a beautiful July day, she fell in love with everything Hofstra had to offer. Orientation in summer 2012 was only the beginning of the roller coaster of a ride she has had here at Hofstra, and she wouldn’t change it for the world. Now starting her final semester at Hofstra, she can’t believe her time is coming to an end. Janelle has loved spending her time as a dance and management dual-degree candidate, roaming the halls of The Lawrence Herbert School of Communication and C.V. Starr Hall, reveling in long days of classes and rehearsal for Danceworks and MoVoM, and of course repping her letters for Phi Sigma Sigma.

Peighton Crawford ‘17 Peighton Crawford hails from the somewhat mountainous city of Centennial, Colorado. She had never set foot on New York land prior to Week 7 Orientation during summer 2013, but nonetheless, she chose Hofstra to be her home for the next four years. As a journalism major, Peighton added not only one but two minors to her repertoire: fine arts and global studies. With two younger sisters, Peighton gained 30 more when she decided to become a member of the sorority Alpha Theta Beta. Now, as a senior, Peighton is reluctantly preparing to leave the home that she has built at Hofstra, but it will be OK because she knows it is time for her to spread her wings and move on.

The Expert in Anything Was Once a Beginner! This year’s Welcome Week theme centers on the concept that each new student brings a unique set of ideas and experiences to campus, much like the colorful fingerprint depicted in our logo. At Hofstra, your academic and cocurricular experiences will further shape your identity and allow you to hone your individual expertise. Welcome Week is the start of this journey, and we encourage you to seize every opportunity to learn and explore.
