HEAD COACH KATHY DE ANGELIS

K

athy De Angelis, a former player and current coach for the United States National Field Hockey program, is in her 18th year as head field hockey coach at Hofstra University in 2015. She has directed the Pride to winning records in 10 of the past 14 seasons. During her tenure at Hofstra De Angelis has coached three All-Americans (totaling five selections), 14 regional All-Americans (totaling 26 selections), 25 all-conference players (35 selections), 16 all-conference rookie team selections and 59 National Field Hockey Coaches Association ScholarAthletes (132 selections). In her 17 seasons at Hofstra, De Angelis has compiled a 165-169 coaching record Including a stretch of six straight winning seasons (2001 through 2006) for the first time at the Division I level and just the second time since 1947 to 1952. Hofstra’s record in those six seasons was 73-47. Hofstra is coming off a 12-7 season in 2014. It was a season that saw the Pride rattle off win streaks of seven games and five games. Jonel Boileau ended her career by becoming the Pride’s first-ever Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Player of the Year award winner while freshman Simca Schoen was selected the CAA’s Rookie of the Year. Claudia Marin Samper joined Boileau on the All-CAA first team while Simca Schoen and older sister Stella Schoen were named to the second team. The younger Schoen and Carys Swan were selected to the CAA All-Rookie squad. Boileau, who was named to the AllECAC second team, was also a NFHCA All

Mid-East Region first team selection while Marin-Samper and Simca Schoen were second team choices. The Pride continued to excel in the classroom in 2014 as Boileau was named the CAA Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In addition, Hofstra led Division I with 18 NFHCA National Academic Squad members including two, Stella Schoen and Matilda Hallett, who were named Scholars of Distinction. Hofstra also received a 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award.

peaking at #18 following a 5-0 start to the season. Tricia-Ann Greaves earned the Pride’s first All-CAA first team honor. A year later, De Angelis led Hofstra to an 8-0 start en route to a 12-8 record, the second 12-win season in her tenure. Kate Sergi and DoniMelissa Jantzen earned All-Mid-East Region honors while Sergi and Jessica Cowperthwait earned All-CAA honors.

De Angelis, a native of Lexington, Massachusetts, began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts in 1991. She left UMass to become the head field hockey coach and assistant director of the fitness center at LaSalle University from 1992 through the 1995 season. She then led Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State) in 1996 and 1997 before coming to Long Island. Taking over a Hofstra program in 1998 that had just two winning seasons in the previous 10 years, De Angelis began the Pride turnaround in 2001 leading her team to a 12-8 record. It marked the second straight year of improvement for the team after a 4-16 record in 1999. Hofstra also returned to the national rankings in 2001 as the team received votes in the STX/NFHCA Poll on several occasions.

In 2004 De Angelis started a run of three consecutive 13-win seasons which are her personal best as coach and tied for the second most wins in the history of the program. The Pride posted a 13-8 record, and a berth in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship. Hofstra, which was seeded fourth, upset top-seed and 13th-ranked William & Mary to become the first four seed to advance to the title game. The postseason appearance was also Hofstra’s first since the 1987 season. The 2004 squad also produced the Pride’s first All-American since 1999 as Doni-Melissa Jantzen earned third team accolades. In 2005 De Angelis guided the Pride to a 13-7 mark and a spot in the semifinals of the CAA Championship. The team finished the season ranked 21st in the NCAA RPI and received six votes in the final STX/NFHCA Division I Poll. De Angelis also recorded her 100th career victory, in a 4-1 decision over Drexel and Doni-Melissa Jantzen earn NFHCA AllAmerica third team honors for the second consecutive year in 2005.

The Pride posted a 10-9 record in 2002 after joining the highly competitive Colonial Athletic Association. Hofstra spent six weeks in the 2002 STX/NFHCA Division I Poll,

The 2006 season was nearly identical to the Pride’s 2005 campaign, as the team finished the season with a 13-7 record and reached the semifinals of the CAA Championship. De

HEAD COACH KATHY DE ANGELIS Angelis led the Pride to an undefeated record at home (8-0) for the first time in program history. The Pride finished the season ranked 21st in the NCAA RPI for the second consecutive year, and also received 23 votes in the final STX/NFHCA Division I Poll. Charlia Warner earned NFHCA All-America second team honors, the program’s third AllAmerican in three years. In 2007 Hofstra moved into its new home, the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium, and qualified for the CAA Championship for a fourth consecutive year. But a 7-11 record ended a string of six consecutive winning seasons. The Pride did produce an All MidEast Region selection in Warner and three All-CAA selections in Brit Blankmeyer, Amy-Lee Levey and Warner. The 2008 season saw Hofstra post a 10-9 record and qualify for its fifth consecutive CAA Championship. Warner earned her third AllMid-East Region selection and Genna Kovar, Blankmeyer and Warner earned All-CAA honors. De Angelis also celebrated a milestone win in her Hofstra career, posting the 100th win of her tenure in a 3-0 win over Siena in 2008. In 2009 Hofstra posted a 12-8 mark and qualified for the CAA Field Hockey Championship for the sixth consecutive season. In the process, Kovar was named to the NFHCA All-America third team. Kovar was also named to the All-Mid-East Region first team while Amy-Lee Levey was selected to the third team. Kovar (1st team) and Levey (2nd team) earned All-CAA honors and Micaela Gallagher was voted to the CAA All-Rookie Team. The 2010 season saw the Pride battle through the adversity of the loss of two starters to injuries and a 7-11 record. Kovar was named to the All-Mid East Region second team as well as the All-CAA first team. In the classroom, the Pride excelled and was named one of the Gladiator by SGI/National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic teams with 11 student-athletes being named to the national academic squad. In 2011 Hofstra rebounded from an injuryplagued 2010 to post a 13-9 overall record, a 20th-place ranking in the final NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), a secondplace finish in the CAA and advanced to the CAA Championship semifinals. The 13 wins matched her personal best as coach and tied her own mark for the second most wins in the history of the program. Kovar, who broke three single season records and three career

marks to close out her stellar career, was named to the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America third team, and the NFHCA All-Mid-East Region and All-CAA first teams. Levey was named to the NFHCA All-Mid-East Region and All-CAA second teams. The Pride continued their excellence in the classroom, earning one of the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Team awards with 15 student-athletes being named to the national academic squad. In 2012 Hofstra qualified for the CAA Championship Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine seasons and had two All-CAA selections and two NFHCA AllMid-East Region picks in Krizia Layne and Jonel Boileau, an all-rookie honoree in Charlotte Loehr, and 14 NFHCA Academic Squad members. Hofstra also received a 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award. The Pride scuffled through a 6-14 campaign in 2013 with a roster that included 13 freshmen and sophomores. Boileau and Stella Schoen each earned NFHCA All-Mid-East Region honors, Boileau, Schoen and Carissa Witmer earned All-CAA honors and 15 student-athletes earned NFHCA Academic Squad accolades. Hofstra also received the Gladiator by SGI/ NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award for the fourth consecutive season. A 1992 graduate of the University of Massachusetts-Isenberg School of Management with a degree in sports management, De Angelis was a three-time All-American, earning first team honors in her junior and senior seasons, and honorable mention accolades as a sophomore, and was a finalist for the Honda Broderick Award as National Player of the Year and collegiate woman athlete of the year following her senior season. During her career, she helped UMass achieve a 60-20-8 record, four Atlantic 10 conference titles, and four NCAA tournament appearances, including a Final Four berth in 1987. In that 1987 NCAA tournament, De Angelis was named to the Final Four AllTournament Team. Other individual honors included being named to the All-Atlantic 10 team twice, the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team and the all-region team. De Angelis led the team in scoring for three seasons, tallying 49 goals and 105 career points. She is currently ranked third on the Massachusetts career goals list and fifth on the all-time scoring list.

While at Massachusetts, De Angelis was a member of the United States Field Hockey National Under-21 Team in 1987 and 1988, the U.S. National Reserve Team in 1988 and 1989, and the U.S. National Elite Team in 1990 and 1991. She also competed in five U.S. Olympic Festivals from 1986 through 1991. During the summer of 2004 De Angelis played with the Tempest in the United Airlines Summer League. She has been involved with the U.S. National Field Hockey coaching staff since 1988, coaching in B, C, D and U.S. Super Camps. In 1999 she coached at the U.S. “A” Camp. During the summer of 2000, De Angelis coached at the U.S. men’s national team trials at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego, California. She has also coached for the U.S. Olympic Developmental Program, and the U.S. National Futures Program, including stints as the under-15, under-18 and under-19 coach. Since 2005 De Angelis has served as a coach for the USA Field Hockey High Performance Training Center’s New York/ New Jersey/Pennsylvania squad and led the team to the 2007 USA Field Hockey National Championship at the USA Training Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, following third place finishes at the 2005 and 2006 tournaments. De Angelis also has international experience as a player and coach, having played on the U.S. team’s tour of Canada in 1987 and in the 1988 Pan American Games in Mar Del Plata, Argentina, in which the United States captured a silver medal. 2015 OUTLOOK

B

y most criteria the 2014 Hofstra Field Hockey season was quite successful both on the field and in the classroom. The Pride, under the direction of Kathy DeAngelis, who is entering her 18th season as Hofstra head field hockey coach in 2015, tied the school mark for the third-most victories in a single season with 12. The Pride also recorded winning streaks of seven games and five games along the way. Individually, the awards were plentiful. Forward Jonel Boileau made her final season a memorable one by becoming Hofstra’s first Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year Award winner and being named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association AllMid-East Region first team, the All-CAA first team, the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference second team, the NFHCA Senior AllStar Game, the CAA Field Hockey All-Academic Team and the CAA Field Hockey Scholar Athlete of the Year. Freshman Simca Schoen earned the CAA Rookie of the Year Award, giving Hofstra its first conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year Award winners, in any sport, for the first time since 2007. Simca Schoen also garnered all-region and All-CAA second team honors, and CAA All-Rookie Team accolades. Sophomore Claudia CLAUDIA MARIN SAMPER

down but also out of the conference championship. The frustration of that final weekend a season ago will be used as a learning lesson for the 19 returnees in 2015. While Boileau, Holly Andrews and Marta Penas, three seniors who were mainstays in the Pride line-up the past four seasons, have graduated, Hofstra has nine starters and numerous reserves and newcomers ready to help erase the memory of an opportunity that went by the wayside.

FORWARD There is no doubt that the Pride will feel the loss of Boileau. Hofstra’s first CAA Field Hockey Player of the Year led the conference in scoring with 16 goals and six assists for 38 points last season. Her 48 goals, 18 assists and 114 points during her 80 career games placed her in the top seven in each Hofstra category. But while Boileau’s talent and leadership will be missed, the striker line cupboard is far from bare. A senior and two juniors, all with starting experience, return to lead the Pride attack. Senior Lauren del Valle (Exton, PA), a durable and speedy forward, returns after posting a career-high four goals - all in one game - last season. Del Valle, who tied the school’s single-game goal mark against Colgate, started four of the 17 games in 2014 and would like to step into the vacant starting role on the attack. She is a 2013 recipient of the NFHCA Scholar of Distinction Award. The Pride will have a potent, double-barrel tandem returning to the starting line-up in Marin Samper (Terrassa, Spain) and Stella Schoen (Hamburg, Germany). Marin Samper, an All-CAA first team selection STELLA SCHOEN

Marin Samper was recognized for her breakout season with CAA first team and all-region second team honors. Classmate Stella Schoen, who earned one of Hofstra’s two NFHCA Scholar of Distinction awards, also earned All-CAA second team honors despite missing seven games with an injury. The Hofstra Field Hockey team continued to excel in the classroom as well. In addition to Boileau’s and Stella Schoen’s academic honors, the Pride received the 2014 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award and led Division I with 18 NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad members. But the Pride left some goals on the table at the end of the season. Despite being in a three-way tie for second place, with a victory over eventual champion Delaware to their credit, entering the final weekend of the regular season, a bad weekend not only left Hofstra

2015 OUTLOOK in 2014, had a stellar season and finished second in the conference with 34 points, third in goals with 13 and fourth with eight assists. The NFHCA All-Mideast Region second team pick a year ago was also named to the 2015 All-CAA preseason squad. Stella Schoen came on to the Hofstra scene in 2013 in a big way, tying three Pride records with 10 goals, six assists - since broken by her sister Simca - and 26 points on her way to NFHCA All-Mideast Region second team and All-CAA first team honors. The strong striker was slowed last season by a leg injury that caused her to miss seven games. But Schoen still tallied six goals and seven assists on the way to All-CAA second team honors while leading the brilliant Pride in the classroom by earning the NFHCA Scholar of Distinction Award for the second consecutive season. Several other returnees will be looking to crash the party on the striker line. Junior Briana Stine (Columbia, MD) played in six games for the Pride last year after transferring from Robert Morris University. Red-shirt sophomores Emily Barber (Davis, CA) and Emily Savage (Winchester, MA), both former USA Futures members, have seen limited action at Hofstra after each set scoring records at their respective high schools. Red-shirt freshman Taylor Mumley (Glen Rock, PA), a former two-time YAIAA Division II Player of the Year, will also be looking to crack the line-up.

MIDFIELD The Pride’s starting midfield from 2014 returns intact after a stellar season. Senior Charlotte Loehr (Mainz, Germany) was another Hofstra student-athlete who enjoyed a breakout season in 2014. She posted career highs of 10 goals, three assists and 23 points while starting all 19 games as a junior. She is joined at midfield by juniors Emily Gallagher (North Wales, PA) and Colby Hussong (Princeton Junction, NJ). Gallagher, who like her line mates started all 19 games, tallied a career-best three assists and was on the field for more than 1,100 minutes. Hussong, who came to Hofstra in January 2014 after transferring from Miami (OH) University, posted four assists in her first season with the Pride and fit in very well.

EMILY GALLAGHER

Two freshmen, Madison Sauve (Boiling Springs, PA) and Samantha Schlegel (Birdsboro, PA), could also figure on the Pride’s attack line in 2015. Sauve, a two-time Mid-Penn All-Star selection, tallied 88 points during her scholastic career at Cumberland Valley High School and has strong skills around the goal. Schlegel, a Berks County AllDivision first team selection at Twin Valley High School as a senior, posted 31 goals and 14 assists in her final three seasons.

CHARLOTTE LOEHR

Red-shirt sophomore Shannon Dougherty (Warrington, PA) saw limited action for the Pride last season and will be looking to boost her playing time. Freshman Madison Reed (Sugarloaf, PA), a twotime All-Pennsylvania honorable mention selection from Hazleton Area High School, tallied nine goals and 15 assists as a senior and will be looking to crack the line-up.

DEFENSE Despite the graduation of Andrews, who started all 19 games last season, the Hofstra defense could be the strongest segment of the team. Three juniors and a sophomore, all who saw extensive time last season, and a freshman will be battling for the four starting spots.

2015 OUTLOOK Gillian Kirkpatrick (Victoria, BC, Canada), played in 19 games for the second consecutive season and started 13 contests in 2014. Sauni Davenport, a speedy junior who has started 27 of her 37 games over her two seasons with the Pride, also returns to reclaim a starting role which saw her start 20 games as a freshman. Red-shirt junior Leigh Maxwell-Smith (Vancouver, BC, Canada), who tripled her playing time in 2014, played in 18 games and made three starts.

CARISSSA WITMER

Sophomore Simca Schoen (Hamburg, Germany) had a stellar rookie season, earning all-region second team, All-CAA second team and CAA Rookie of the Year honors. She tallied a Hofstra rookie record of 11 assists to go with her four goals and was an outstanding twoway player. Redshirt-freshman Savanna Malloy (Collegeville, PA), a four-year all-area selection in high school and true freshman Ashton Boal (New Cumberland, PA), a two-time Mid-Penn Conference first team selection at Cedar Cliff High School, will also be looking for playing time in 2015.

GOALKEEPER Leading the defense is junior Carissa Witmer (Ephrata, PA), who has logged the most playing minutes while starting every game during the past two seasons, returns to anchor the defense. Witmer, who tallied four goals and one assist as a freshman, added a goal and an assist to her charts last season and played nearly 1,300 minutes. Classmate

Both goalies who started games in 2014 return this season in sophomore Carys Swan (Kelowna, BC, Canada) and red-shirt sophomore Lauren Saltus (Centerville, VA). Swan started 17 of the 19 games that she played in and posted a 2.42 goals against average with 76 saves and a .664 save percentage. She earned CAA AllRookie Team honors. Saltus, who started two of the three games that she played in, is expected to back-up Swan. Freshman Mia Thompson (Stockton, NJ), an All-Central New Jersey first team selection at Notre Dame High School, will push Swan and Saltus for playing time.

ATHLETIC ACADEMIC SUPPORT

University Advisement, who helps address the various needs of student‑athletes. The academic advisor emphasizes four areas in their efforts to ensure the academic success of Hofstra’s student-athletes. Area one is academic counseling. Services are provided in the areas of academic planning, career planning, personal counseling, and campus and community referrals. The advisor also meets with prospective student‑athletes, at the coach’s request, to share the many benefits of a Hofstra University education. Area two is academic advising. The academic advisor serves as the primary advisor for first-year and undecided studentathletes, and also assists upperclassmen who have declared a major.

ofstra University is committed to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. The University views participation in intercollegiate athletics as benefiting the student-athlete in an educationally enhancing experience beyond any other opportunity available. Hofstra also realizes the time commitment made by student-athletes and has committed the facilities and resources to support all students.

Area three is academic monitoring. The advisor monitors the academic progress of student‑athletes to ensure compliance with Hofstra University, NCAA and conference regulations. The advisor’s regular communication with the faculty and coaches

provide opportunities for early intervention should academic difficulties arise. Area four is study halls. The University Tutorial Program supports athletic study halls by providing tutors in various subjects as necessary. The academic advisors also assess the needs of individual student‑athletes to provide the most effective study environment. The assessment tool administered by the Center for University Advisement is also used to provide various enrichment seminars for the student‑athletes such as time management, writing skills, campus resources, and surviving the college transition. In 2010 The Fried Family Student-Athlete Development Center was opened on the second level of the James M. Shuart Stadium Building. The center houses the offices of the academic advisors as well as the studentathlete services staff. A large computer lab with printer access for use by Hofstra studentathletes, a quiet study area with wireless internet access and two group study/tutor rooms with power point access and white boards are also available.

The University Tutorial Program (UTP) provides free tutoring in every subject area to any Hofstra student. Students are able to obtain up to 1 1/2 hours of individual tutorial assistance per week for up to three courses. They are also able to utilize the various help labs on campus, which specialize in providing assistance in writing, business and QM, and biology and chemistry. In addition to this service, student-athletes are assigned an academic advisor, through the Center for

HOFSTRA IN THE COMMUNITY

T

he Hofstra Field Hockey team is quite active in the Long Island community. The Pride is active in area schools, participating in the Read Across America program and the Reading with Pride initiative at local elementary schools. Hofstra Field Hockey has also coordinated school supply drives that benefitted the students at Jackson Main Elementary School in Hempstead. The team also conducts field hockey clinics for various youth organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island. This past year the Pride took part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge including pouring water over Hofstra Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. In addition, Hofstra Field Hockey players also take part in charity fund raising events such as the annual Polar Plunge and Hofstra’s Jail and Bail that benefits the Special Olympics. The team also takes part in food and blood drives in conjunction with Hofstra’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and partners with organizations such as Long Island Cares and The Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN). As a team, field hockey student-athletes took part in Hofstra’s Shake-A-Rake initiative which resulted in the yard cleanups of numerous elderly and disabled residents of the surrounding community. The team also took part in the Yards For Yeardley initiative in which Hofstra student-athletes and staff combined to run one million yards and raise awareness about domestic violence in support of the One Love Foundation. The Pride also hold an annual Breast Cancer Awareness game to raise funds for the American Cancer Society, wearing pink socks and laces to show support. In 2014 Hofstra held a fundraiser to assist alumnus Jillian Geysen, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The event, which was held in conjunction with the Pride’s game against Rider, raised nearly $1600 for Jillian’s medical expenses.

THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION T he Colonial Athletic Association has established itself as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically for more than 30 years.

The CAA encompasses many of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Charleston, S.C. The conference has produced 15 national team champions in four different sports, 33 individual national champions, 13 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 13 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 24 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2014-15, nearly 2,100 of the league’s 4,000 studentathletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 36 teams in 17 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2015. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes several of the nation’s top media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Washington, D.C. (8) and Baltimore (27). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19 million. The CAA conducts championships in 22 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis and track & field. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2014-15, 23 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 39 student-athletes received All-America honors in 14 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past decade. CAA teams have combined to win 43 games in postseason play since 2006, including 14 victories in the NCAA Tournament. The CAA has posted at least one NCAA Tournament win in six of the past 10 years, including four of the last six. The conference has had five or more teams compete in postseason play in five of the last seven seasons. In women’s basketball, CAA champion James Madison made its fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last six years and recorded its 10th consecutive postseason appearance. In 2013, Delaware became the 12th CAA team to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and Drexel captured the WNIT championship with a 46-43 victory over Utah. CAA teams

42

HO F S T R A

have recorded 23 victories in postseason play over the past four years.

The conference also excels in many other sports. The CAA sent multiple teams to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship for the fifth straight year and each current member of the conference has reached the NCAA Tournament since 2006. A pair of CAA softball teams (Hofstra and James Madison) earned NCAA Tournament berths for the third year in a row, with the Dukes seeded #15 nationally in 2015. The Pride advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals in 2012. In baseball, UNCW and College of Charleston both received #2 seeds and advanced to the finals of their respective NCAA Regionals. The Cougars reached the NCAA Super Regionals in 2014. William & Mary’s women’s cross country squad finished 17th at the 2014 NCAA Championship. Tribe junior Emily Stites earned All-America accolades in cross country and track and field, while Elon’s Luis Vargas became the Phoenix’s first cross country All-American. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. At least two women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament three times in the past eight years. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship and Drexel advanced to the quarterfinals in 2014. The CAA has had at least 11 players selected in 11 of the last 13 Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also had individuals earn All-America honors in field hockey, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball and baseball last season and had players nationally ranked in tennis and golf. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university education and life outside of intercollegiate athletics. The Alliance has enabled hundreds of students to showcase their research in the annual Undergraduate Research Conference and Journal, facilitated leadership exchanges to promote professional development, developed an academic resource sharing program to support student athletes, and created opportunities for institutions to partner on a wide range of initiatives that enhance student success. CAA schools are also very active in community service projects. The CAA Blood Challenge, which is held each fall, has raised more than 40,000 units of blood over the past 13 years. The CAA Food Drive Challenge, which is held each spring, has resulted in over 18,000 pounds of donated food and $7,000 in cash contributions in only two years.

Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when two of its current members - James Madison University and the

College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, George Mason University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new conference. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Old Dominion University joined the CAA in 1991 and was followed by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference in 2005. College of Charleston began its first year as a CAA member in 2013 and Elon University joined the conference on July 1, 2014.
