A performance exist as an art form with no set medium. An appreciation of form, movement or experience. A performance in architecture is the countless opportunities and potential a building creates through its form by encouraging engagement through ones interaction with space. “Undulate is the amalgamation of arts, performance and cultural qualities of the city. Situated between the bustling cbd and the relaxing Domain of Sydney, Undulate embodies the movement of space within the site. The undulating form of walls, floor plates and movement creates a seamless configuration of spaces within the envelope which respond to the programs situated in the building and the urban climate of it’s surrounding; creating a dynamic and joyous micro-climate to the stresses of the urban lifestyle. In Can Lis, Utzon imposes a cross directional circulation through interweaving indoor and outdoor spaces, this rhythm of movement extracted from Can Lis forms the bases of Undulate where the proposed design consist on the intersection of undulating rhythms in form, movement and site. Undulate creates opportunity and amalgamate movement, space and body which forms a dynamic environment where performance can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time.

Can Liz, Utzon

Can Lis is a residential house designed by Utzon; originally built for his wife, Lis; Can lis is Utzon’s family home. Built on the island of Majorca, Spain. The design is deeply influenced by Utzon’s appreciation towards nature and it’s relation to architecture as well as his understanding of local materials and culture. Amongst my analysis, Can Lis consist of 5 pavilions which each are built in a certain angle which frame and maximise the views of the site. The building is situated along the cliff which is oriented towards the the sun throughout the day. The building is a reflection of Utzon’s understanding of spanish vernecular culture and geography as he utilises traditional building methods as well as incorporate local material such as mares stone which is native to Majorca island. Each pavilion is supported by a strategic grid of stone colomns which shapes the interior space and result in 2 directional cirulation in the house. Each pavilion is connected by courtyard spaces at the back of the house which promote the the blending of outdoor and indoor space. Can Lis exemplifies the craft of combining mankind with nature, resulting in a truly custom and unique masterpiece.

MAPPINGS

MAPPING CIRCULATION Circulation paths have been mapped in order to visualise how one move around and through the site. The proposed site is situated between two contrasting landscape, the city and doman where one is a entirely manmade construct and the other is a park which embodies the stress-free and active lifestyle. The mapping visualises the patterns and rhythms of cirulation on both sides of the site.

RHYTHMS AND MOVEMENT The mapping of circulation paths have led to the observation of the differentiating ways of movement of the two spaces. The city (mapped in red) is more rigid and straight forward, meanwhile, the domain (blue) is more freeforms and has more variations in paths.

MAPPING OF VOID SPACE Images were taken as I apporached the site from both sides, the mapping demonstrates the difference in physical construct and void spaces on both sides of the site.

DOMAIN

CITY

Tracings of the void spaces were compared and simplified as a form of investigation to observe the correlations and differences in experience as one approaches the site from both sides. The overlapping of the void tracing helped visualise the differences. The city looks more artifitial meanwhile the domain seems more free form and condensed. One similarity was observed where both overlaying of void space suggrests an entry or a framing of space which guides and dictates ones choice of movement.

CONCEPT

CONCEPT MODEL NO.1

The first concept model is extracted from the mapping of circulation paths. The concept model conveys the transition of circuation between the city and domain and having transition the middle as the proposed site.

NCEPT DEVELOPMENT

CROSS CIRCULATION The concept model mainly focuses on developing a cross directional circulation within the constructed space and looking at spatial potential formed within the walls.

VOID SPACE

Transforming the lines exstracted from the circulation mapping has allowed for a variety of possibilities on the adaption of the concept. These concept models show the circulation paths being used in a verticle manner. Visualising the cocept in sections gives the opportunity in developing a building which respond to the rhythms of circulation in both plan and section.
