TRANSIT PLANNING EASTERN CORRIDOR LIGHT RAIL LINE CINCINNATI, OH My Spring 2016 planning studio was dedicated to regional-scale transit planning. The course concentrated on conceptual planning and examined land use, zoning, urban design, environmental impacts and other similar considerations. Specifically, we focused on the Wasson Way corridor in Cincinnati, OH. The line we proposed ran from Xavier University, continued into the eastern suburbs, and terminated in Union Township at Eastgate Mall. The right-of-way that was used for the majority of our project had originally existed as a freight rail line, owned by the Norfolk Southern Corporation. We proposed building 13 stations and devised conceptual site plans for each of the locations.

KEY LAND USES
STATION CONCEPT PLAN Our team created concept maps for each site to give a generalized sense of the site and it’s opportunities and constraints. Shown here is the plan for the Xavier Station in Norwood, Ohio. Of The primary points of interest included the adjacent Xavier University, the businesses of Norwood, and the potential connection to the Cincinnati Streetcar.
STATION CONCEPT PLAN Our team also created illustrative site plans for each station on our line to clearly illustrate how we envisioned the area surrounding each stop on our route. Shown here is the site plan for Xavier University in Norwood, Ohio. We decided to add parking, a rail car maintenance building, and a connection to the Cincinnati Streetcar.

TOWN PLANNING MICHAEL WATKINS ARCHITECT, LLC GAITHERSBURG, MD From August to December of 2017 I worked at Michael Watkins Architect, LLC. Mike Watkins was a charter member of the Congress for New Urbanism and currently runs his 5 person team out of Kentlands, a community outside Washington DC that he helped masterplan in the 1990s. While working with him, I had the opportunity to learn about the design philosophy of New Urbanism and work on several traditionally designed communities around the country.
EAST BEACH East Beach is a traditional neighborhood development in Norfolk, VA. The community was originally masterplanned by Duany Plater-Zyberk with the help of Mike Watkins using the principles of New Urbanism. Much of the original land platted for the community is built out today, however the property developers are currently planning to continue to grow and they contacted MWA regarding the possibilities of creating a small plan for a piece of the property. My colleague and I developed the two options below.
OPTION 1
OPTION 2
ARKANSAS COLLEGES OF HEALTH EDUCATION PROPERTY MWA was hired by developer to design a mixed-use, walkable neighborhood surrounding the developing Arkansas medical college property and I had the opportunity to work on phase 1 of the plan. Shown here is the regulating plan. The regulating plan visually explains the design necessities of each property in the community. For example, an orange arrow represents the need for an architectural feature that will define a sight line.
WATER COLOR RENDEREINGS OF THE ACHE PROPERTY Multiple illustrated water color renderings were commissioned by MWA after the ACHE charrette was completed. These illustrate the plan as proposed by the MWA team.
CAMPUS PLANNING MIDTOWN CAMPUS CINCINNATI, OH The focus of my summer 2017 design studio was the north building of the main downtown location of the Cincinnati Library. Officials decided that they no longer needed the facility and could outsource many of it’s functions to a separate location, freeing up the space for redevelopment. Our studio was tasked with analyzing the neighborhood and designing a master plan for the space that could better serve the needs of the neighborhood.
CONCEPT PLA N
SUBJECTIVE MAPPING
LIBRARY SECTION CUT To start off the studio, each student was responsible for researching one “hard” element of the site such as facility square footage or currently available library programming. I volunteered to complete sections of the site and used AutoCAD and Illustrator to generate the graphics. This is one of 8 diagrams.
PROPOSED NORTH BUILDING REDESIGN Ultimately, we designed the north building to include classrooms and offices, conference space, a cafeteria, a gym, and five levels of residential space for students. The law school could consistently bring several hundred students and faculty to our study area and could act as a catalyst for economic and social revitalization in the Midtown area.
ILLUSTRATIVE MASTERPLAN In addition to redesigning the north building, we proposed number of urban design implementations that could activate the public spaces surrounding the library. Keeping our campus concept in mind, we decided to redesign the spaces with greenery that was reminiscent of the University of Cincinnati campus, while also bringing in new ideas to add life to the existing vast and empty public spaces.. The most notable aspect of the space was the “pods that are spread across design. These small boxed-in spaces were inspired by the University of Technology Sydney Alumni Green in Australia (designed by Aspect Studios). The pods would break up and compartmentalize the spaces currently surrounding the library.

DOWNTOWN PLANNING ASSEMBLY ROW BOSTON, MA From January to April of 2017 I worked with Street-Works Studio as an intern on a number of projects located on the East Coast of the United States. I was involved in multiple parts of the design process from the basic construction of CAD files to the final rendering of the plans. Additionally, over the course of each of the projects I was able to gain experience with streetscape design and simple building design. More than any other project, I devoted my time at Street-Works to Assembly Row-- a mixed-use urban neighborhood in Boston, MA. As an intern, my primary involvement with the project involved receiving AutoCAD files from the architectural firms that were also working on the project and converting them into the rendered site plans shown below.
