INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND LANGUAGES

International Business and Languages (IBL) is a broad study programme offered in English, covering all aspects of marketing and of course languages. International Business and Languages (IBL) trains students to become professionals who are well equipped to do business in several foreign languages, with business partners from different cultural backgrounds.

practice-driven and student-driven education. More information can be found at hogeschoolrotterdam.nl/rom

First Year The first year is designed to give you a good impression of the study programme and the profession. It consists of practical exercises (projects) supported by modules such as business economics, marketing and management. You will also follow three modern foreign languages.

Main Phase As a graduate of IBL you will act as the link between a company and the international business environment; mapping the interests of a company or organisation, setting goals, and translating these into plans. Your expertise in business and marketing is given greater reach through your mastery of foreign languages. You make and maintain contacts with a company or organisation’s international relations; particularly in the areas of international purchasing, sales and account management, international communication management and export management.

In the second year of the programme you will increase your knowledge of economics and international law. You learn to identify and analyze economic and legal problems. The third year is devoted to study and an internship abroad. In the fourth year you can follow a minor abroad. The last half year is devoted to your graduation project.

Subjects Basic Subjects

IBL graduates are much sought after as skilled communicators who, with an excellent command of at least three modern foreign languages, can play a key role in the entire business communication.

The following subjects form the basis of the study programme: English, Marketing, Economics, Research methods, Communication and Projects.

Profession specific subjects The IBL graduate operates in different countries and cultures. Ethical and responsible business is a key concept. Graduates have a good understanding of cultural foundations, quickly feel at home in other cultures and understand the conduct of their international business partners as an expression of a particular cultural characteristic.

Programme Structure Rotterdam Education Model To translate the practical, hands-on mentality associated with the city of Rotterdam and the talent development of our students into education Rotterdam University, University of Applied Sciences has developed a tightly implemented education model. Characteristic of the Rotterdam Education Model (REM) are three learning tracks: knowledge-driven,

The programme also includes subjects such as: International Marketing and Management, Sales, Market Research, Modern foreign languages, Cross Cultural Management, Economics and Law.

Elective Modules It is possible to fill in part of your study programme with elective modules. Being able to make your own choices gives you space to add to your personal development. In this way students can achieve independence, and gradually progress from guided to supervised, and subsequently to independent and self-reliant learning.

Minors In the first half of the fourth year you follow a minor of your choice. A minor is a programme that allows you to specialise in a certain area. Through your minor you can

deepen your knowledge in an aspect of your chosen field, or broaden your knowledge in a complementary area. This will help prepare you for your professional career and broaden your options in the labour market.

A World of Possibilities The IBL programme includes two required semesters abroad. In the third year, this is the placement and in the fourth year, you spend one semester studying at a partner school. The preparation for study abroad, which can also be a project in collaboration with a partner school, starts in the sixth semester (third year) in the form of ‘selected topics’. You can choose from the subjects; International Business Communication, Doing Business in Latin America, Doing Business in Central and Eastern Europe or Doing Business in Africa and the Middle East. Also the first two years of the IBL programme contain a lot of project-work, either abroad and/or in collaboration with international companies. The IBL programme is offered in 2 variations: 1. Year 1 & 2 are taught in Dutch with year 3 & 4 taught in English or 2. Year 1-4 are taught entirely in English For more information about the entirely English-taught programme please see rotterdambusinessschool.nl

Your own import business! How do you lead a successful business? That was the question we were asked in the second year of our IBL programme. We set up our own import company, COR International, and imported a unique product from China, an umbrella in a bottle. We followed all the steps that a “real” import company would undertake: building capital by finding shareholders, importing a product from a reputable supplier, doing market research into the right target market, selling as many of our products as quickly as possible to maximize profits and ultimately generate a dividend and liquidate the company. That’s a lot of experience in only the second year of your studies! COR International Second year IBL project group

It’s important for me to be able to express myself properly when I’m abroad. I think there’s no better way to get a good grip on a language than to study International Business and Languages and then actually use the languages you have learned in the country itself. IBL gives you the chance to do this through a placement in another country and a study abroad period. André van der Valk, International Business & Languages graduate
