GREEK OF THE WEEK: KATIE LARKIN Name: Katie Larkin. Sorority: Phi Mu. Year: Junior. Major: Biochemistry. Hometown: Lake St. Louis, Missouri. Fun fact: I was bit by a mouse on my foot in middle school, but luckily I didn’t get rabies! Katie Larkin is one of my sisters in Phi Mu, but I never really had a chance to get to know her, until now. She walked into the basement of the sorority house right on time carrying an intimidatingly large book and leftover pizza. Once she took her coat off, she went to warm up her pizza and was ready to tell me all about herself. On campus, she’s involved in Scarlet Guard, Nebraska Legends and is an NSE leader. Larkin wants to attend medical school at Mizzou and work in pediatrics, so she does volunteer work at St. Elizabeth’s. To
her, it’s much more of a learning experience than a chore. She completes side work, fills charts and paperwork, keeps supplies stocked and puts together gift bags for mothers heading home with their new babies. While working, she also spends time admiring the newborns in the neo-natal area, during her down time, while volunteering. Larkin is also a teammate mentor at West Lincoln Elementary School. She visits the school once a week and spends time with a fifth grade girl who was nominated for the program due to family trouble and lack of options. Larkin has been working with the girl for two years and enjoys being a good friend to her while boosting her confidence for the week.
Larkin is applying for early decision at the University of Missouri Med School. Ever since she was little, going to medical school has been a pipe dream, so she’s very proud of herself that she will actually be applying. Earlier in the week, Larkin met with her counselor who told her that she knows

she will get in whether it’s for early decision or not. Over the summer, Larkin will be staying in Lincoln to be an orientation leader and help new students enroll and get ready for the fall. Along with other orientation leaders, she will be living in Selleck, which she says will make her feel like a freshman, again. As she nears the end of her college experience, her advice to her freshman self is to relax. She says, “I remember waking up in the middle of the night crying because I realized I did something wrong on my calc test.”

when we have so many capable, independent women fighting for equal rights? This is where I believe we, as women, have gone wrong. Here’s what women need to understand: men are not wired the way we are. They do not have the same thought processes, feelings, experiences; they are completely different. One of the main differences is that men are visual. Sure, women fall into some traps, visually, but the affect on men is on an entirely different level.

Do you present yourself as an object or do you imply that you are an able, powerful and successful woman? We need to reevaluate how we portray ourselves, because what we show, or don’t show, is going to be the deciding factor. Another style you could go with in any city and weather is boho. I know that it is in style every spring and summer, but most stores are revamping the boho look and taking it farther. IRISH FOR A DAY

Everything you wear should be green Ever heard of the saying, “If you’re not wearing a bit of green on St. Patrick’s Day, you’ll get pinched.” To avoid this, make sure everything you wear is green. I mean everything, head to toe. Add in a couple of those “kiss me, I’m Irish” tattoos, an Irish flag and you’ll be good to go. Dye your hair red What’s more Irish than being a ginger?! Nothing, that’s what! Nothing says, “Hey, I’m Irish,” more than some auburn hair and a face full of freckles. Take it from a true Irish ginger. If your hair is red and people see you on St. Patrick’s Day, they will go insane! Seriously, it’s like they’ve found the gold at the end of the rainbow. If you follow these tips and throw in a couple of “Top of the mornings” and Every year when March 17 rolls around, it seems like everyone in the U.S. suddenly becomes Irish. You’ll be behaving like a true son or daughter of Erin before you know it! Never call St. Patrick’s Day, “St. Patty’s Day” This is the one thing that annoys me the most! In Ireland, the nickname for Patrick is Paddy and the nickname for Patricia is Patty. We’re not celebrating St. Patricia, it’s St. Patrick, so don’t let a one nickname change the whole holiday. Don’t confuse shamrocks and clovers Shamrocks are all over during St. Patrick’s, but don’t be that person who confuses them with clovers. They are very similar, but only clovers have four leaves, never shamrocks. Eat as much potatoes as possible The Irish are known for many things, but one of the most famous is potatoes. Whether they are mashes, baked or in a soup, potatoes are an Irish staple, along with corn beef and a glass of Jameson. Don’t bother eating anything else that day, it would be an insult to the Irish people, after all.

Picturesque, right? Well, as a sorority woman, this is how I think about fraternity recruitment. I understand there is more to it-you have to check out their resume, involvement, and future goals to know if they would really be a good fit for your chapter, but the free dinner and casual dress sounds more than inviting. Now, picture this: 1,200 freshmen girls lined up down 16th Street in wedges and carefully picked out sundresses with nervous shaking legs walking into various chapter houses. Sorority recruitment cannot even compare. The things chapters do to prepare for these events are completely bi-polar. Fraternity men sign up for recruitment the same way as sorority women, through a form online. These forms are carefully reviewed and noted.
www.theodysseyonline.com
Each contains legacies, first-in-their-family-to-go-Greek and those who are just trying something new to meet people. They begin the process in the same way. That’s just the beginning, though. Fraternity rush begins in the spring semester. Although girls do have the option of a “Greek Preview”, fraternity men have the chance to meet potential pledges during the early months of the year. Some have barbeques, house tours or even are able to contact potential rushees. Sorority women steer clear of the potential new members. Sorority pre-recruitment consists of recruitment workshops, chapter bonding and the everdreaded pre-recruitment week in August. We may begin some things in the spring, but the real rush for us begins the week before school starts. I cannot imagine fraternity men preparing for hours upon hours just to meet those going through recruitment. Though the similarities and differences may not line up, the process as a whole is for the same benefit. Each potential new member and fraternity rushee is looking for the same things-a place to fit in and a chance to experience something new in college. We are able to provide them with a home-away-from-home and a bond that will last a lifetime. Although prerecruitment is not the most exciting event for sorority women, we are able to spend more time with our sisters, sharing the last bit of our summer together. Best of luck to all chapters as this process begins, and I cannot wait to begin my senior year; sadly the last time I will be involved in recruitment!

Please don’t listen to anyone who complains there is nothing to do in Nebraska. There I was, on a typical Sunday with no solid plans. I decided to go to the game. I ended my night by storming the court with the rest of the student section after an incredible win. But the winning wasn’t the only fun thing. The excitement inside the Pinnacle Bank Arena was unmatched. My voice is nearly gone from yelling along with a crowd just two shy of 16,000. And it’s not just about men’s basketball. Women’s basketball, gymnastics, softball, baseball, all these sports are open for students to view free of charge or very cheaply and it’s so much fun to attend with your friends. Don’t pass up an opportunity to have a blast. More chances to wear Husker red For some of us, the end of football season means a drastic decline in the amount of time we spend in our Husker gear. Don’t let that $60 official Nebraska jacket sit in your closet until next fall. THE SPIRIT OF THE PARALYMPICS The Paralympic Games is a major international multisport event, often overshadowed by the Olympics, involving athletes with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities, including mobility disabilities, amputations, blindness and cerebral palsy. There are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games which, since the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea, are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games. This year’s Paralympics were held in Sochi, Russia following the WInter Olympics. The Olympics drew over 21.4 million viewers in primetime. difficult to overcome. While the Olympic Games have experienced tremendous growth in media coverage since the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, the Paralympics have been unable to maintain a consistent international media presence. Until the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, there were no meaningful improvements made in any form of media coverage. Whatever the case may be, the Paralympics really do deserve to be shown on television just as much as the actual Olympics, but the fact of the matter remains: ratings sell television. If you cannot attract and draw the viewers for your broadcast, then you will not make money. It is as simple as that. The Paralympics have obviously made huge strides in their coverage, but if they want to be anything like the Olympics, they need to put a product on the field viewers consider worth watching.

And I joined right in! I once placed my confidence in the minds of men like Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg, visionaries of the silver screen whose movies transcended the idea of a two-hour escape from America’s monotony and were so, so much more.
