MUST HaVe appS FOR COLLege STUDeNTS
1. Mint.com College doesn’t come with the world’s best allowance, and surely doesn’t make it easy to budget with the few greens you do have in your wallet. This app will allow you to manage your money and create a perfect budget. You can get alerts when you are overspending and the app provides charts that show you where most of your transactions are going. It connects to your bank account, so transactions are automatically updated. 2. 7-Minute Workout As college students, it is easy to grab a bag of chips on the way to class, and eat fast food constantly. Most of us don’t have tons of free time to hit the rec five times a week. However, I believe it is important to find time to exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This app helps give you a quick workout right before class, after class, or before chapter and events. Seven minutes is definitely better than nothing. 3. VenMo This app makes paying back friends super easy. You link your bank to the app, and you can transfer payments to your friend’s accounts. There are no service fees, so it saves a trip to the ATM (and that silly $3.50 charge if your bank isn’t in Lubbock.) 4. Duolingo This app is neat for those who want to impress someone they like learn another language. Duolingo is an educational app that will allow you to compete with friends to challenge yourself. 5. Snap2PDF While it may seem pretty self-explanatory, it is also very useful and convenient. If you skip class and are responsible for getting notes from a friend, this app makes it easy get these documents in a more efficient manner. You can take pictures and convert them to PDF files. This could be perfect for a project or exam review as well. 6. Mixologist This app will teach you how to make every type of drink or shot imaginable. You could use this app as a free bartending class! You can also choose non-alcoholic drinks, as well as low-calorie drinks. Cheers to this app, and read responsibly. 7. IntelliDrink Use this app hand-in-hand with th\e app above. IntelliDrink allows you to set up a profile based on your height, weight, and gender to calculate your B.A.C. levels. It allows you to track every drink you have had that night and all its factors – size, alcohol amount, and the amount of time it was consumed. While this app will tell you if you are over or under the legal .08, it is never smart to drink and drive.

Everyone knows about/ uses Pinterest, and most likely the app. This app is so beneficial to our Greek lives in so many ways. We are constantly needed to craft something, come up with ideas, pass by time in class, or find yummy recipes for dinner. People will probably never use the recipes or find the shoes in store nine times out of ten, but I believe it has so much necessary information on this app. I believe guys should even use it for girl’s gift ideas for professional ideas and learn to be self-sufficient. 12. TTU Last, but not least, this app contains all information, from athletic schedules and scores to directions to find which building your class is in. AN INTERVIEW WITH EMMA SWARNER, COLLEGIATE CHAPTER PRESIDENT OF TEXAS TECH TRI DELTA
Contrary to popular belief, there is far more that comprises the infrastructure of a fraternity or sorority than meets the eye. To someone with little experience or involvement with Greek organizations, it may seem as though the daily struggles of a fraternity or sorority officer consist only of designing t-shirts and planning social events. In order to be enlightened further on the duties of an active sorority woman, I spoke with Emma Swarner, Collegiate Chapter President of Tri Delta here at Texas Tech University. As president of the Phi Eta Chapter of Tri Delta, Emma presides over all of the chapter meetings and rituals, and acts as a representative of Tri Delta on campus, as well as in the Lubbock community. “When going through recruitment in the Fall of 2011, why did you choose Tri Delta?” Swarner: “I felt at home the first time I walked through the door! People welcomed me and talked to me in a personal way. I instantly saw myself there.” “In your opinion, how is being involved in Greek life beneficial to collegiate students, and how can it be beneficial post- graduation?” Swarner: “Being Greek is so much more than social. Academic standards are implemented and we participate in major philanthropic work, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital of
Memphis. St. Jude treats children with cancer and other life threatening illnesses, so it is extremely rewarding to know that as a chapter, we help raise money for the hospital and are a part of helping children and their families. Greek life also helps you develop leadership, speaking and interactive skills which are important throughout life, in any setting.”

“What are some of your goals as the Tri Delta Collegiate Chapter President for the 2014 calendar year?” Swarner: “I want our chapter to be seen as a caring, supportive, and spirited part of the Texas Tech campus. Character and integrity are qualities that I will stress as president, and I want to develop strong ties with our Greek counterparts, as well as campus organizations.” “What is your favorite memory since being involved with the Phi Eta chapter of Tri Delta?” Swarner: “There are so many… but, my favorite so far would have to be our annual Delta After Dark philanthropic event benefiting St. Jude - always a good time!” To find out more about the Tri Delta chapter at Texas Tech, and in order to stay updated with current happenings in the Greek community, follow us on Twitter and Instagram: www.twitter.com/TxTechTriDelta instagram.com/txtechtridelta
THE ART OF RUSH wanted that is so luring. Each house is different; the smells, the sounds, the conversations, the outfits, the furniture, but most importantly the traditions.

These details are what relations. You may contact her at are designed to help each leah.hoffman@ttu.edu. individual girl find her sisterhood for life. Yes, the singing and cheering and clapping can get tiring or seem cheesy to some, but to others they represent the values and attitudes that make each sorority house what it is. Moreover, those details can be seen as displayed throughout the houses shown during recruitment week. For example, when I went through the Pi Phi house each day during my time, angels, wings, and arrows could be seen every where throughout. They were hung on the walls, painted in pictures, and even used as furniture. Because of that, the house oozed with tradition. Similarly, every other sorority house on Greek circle was decorated the same, except with their respective insignias, of course. For those who are also involved in Greek life know that rush, or better known as recruitment, is the most important time of the year for both a sorority and fraternity. It is the week when each house bands together in countless efforts to appeal most to those interested. To the outside world, such efforts, which include singing, bubbly conversation and proper attire, seem pointless and ridiculous, but to the select group who choose to go through Greek life, it means something completely different. With recruitment each year comes a wave of competitiveness that takes over every sorority house on Greek circle and the (friendly) claws come out. We bring out the best costumes, songs, conversations and any other tricks we can find up our sleeves. But for the girls coming through on the other side of recruitment, it’s an experience all its own. It can all be very intimidating if allowed to swallow you up, but there is something about being
No matter the experiences had by each individual girl throughout the week, the most important nights are “pref” night and bid day (the following day). “Pref” night is the last night of recruitment in which you attend the two houses of your preference, hoping your favorite will extend to you a bid the next day. In addition, that last night is the most intimate experience you can have all week. Everything the sorority has to offer is laid out on the table, leaving less and less to the imagination. Most importantly, this night allows for each girl to really envision herself in each house and more easily (hopefully) make her decision. However, come bid day, it is something totally different. This is the day you become a part of a sisterhood for life, and there is nothing more rewarding than when you walk off the bus in front of your new “home”. Girls are all around you and embracing you into a new family, waiting to share the rest of their secrets with you that will form a bond unlike any other.

Once you have woken from the Itis-induced coma caused by Willie Mae’s, you and your group will be ready to attack the most well-known street in America. Since we all know the debauchery and chaos associated with this street, I won’t need to describe the insanity you will find. All I wish to leave you with is three life-saving pieces of advice. First, travel in groups. You do not want to find yourself alone on Bourbon Street with the drunken crowds that inhabit this sacred ground. Make sure to plan ahead and name a landmark as your groups’ meet up spot in case of separation. Second, don’t allow yourself to walk down any back alleys or empty streets. Some of the less welcoming natives love to help out-of-towners lose their wallets and cell phones. Just stick with the crowds and your friends and you will have no worries. Finally, probably the most important piece of advice I can give, find Pat O’Brians. When you arrive, order a cup of their sweet, red, nectar of the god’s called a Hurricane. Follow these three rules and you’ll find yourself returning every year for more. Mardi On!
With the beginning of the shortest month, we get to look forward to two of the most important weekends of the year. Now, I understand the significance of V-Day and its worth to any relationship, but the two that I am talking about are on a whole different level. Now, by the time this article is published, one of the weekends will have already passed. On February second, two of America’s hardest hitting teams (no pun intended) with square off to claim ownership of the title Super Bowl XLVIII Champions. The other, a weekend absolutely necessary for the health of the nation, will occur on the last weekend of this month. Thousands of Greek students will make their way to the Crawfish Capital of the world to enjoy a weekend of indulgence and gluttony. Translated to “Fat Tuesday,” Mardi Gras is the one weekend of the year where excessiveness of all sorts is celebrated. I have been lucky enough to join my Cajun family and friends during this time for the past several years, and now I am here to share my hard-earned knowledge with y’all. Despite popular belief, the nightlife of Bourbon Street is only a piece of what NoLa (New Orleans) offers to those attending the festivities. Mardi Gras is in fact an all day, all night ordeal which starts relatively early in the morning. Borrowing some wise words from my grandfather, “It is impossible to celebrate all day, if you don’t start in the morning.” After the most important meal of the day (which I’ll address later), families, Greeks and anyone else ready to enjoy the festivities will crowd the streets of the parade route to enjoy the behemoth, multi-leveled floats of the Mardi Gras parades. Accompanied by marching bands and the randomness of New Orleans “royalty”, these parades will run throughout the day and into the night. Beads will be thrown by the millions, along with random trinkets and novelties following each parade’s theme. Now, before you can even hit these parades and parties, you have to have a solid breakfast, provided by the world renowned Café Du Monde. These powdered beignets and black coffee will be sure to cure any problems caused by the activities of the night before, leaving you clear headed and ready to partake in the city-wide festival. THe boNd oF sIsTerHood Sisterhood is something special, flawless, capturing and motivating. Many people hear this term and think nothing more than a bunch of screaming sorority girls taking selfies, paying more attention to their phone than their actual sisters, and painting each others’ nails.
SaRaH MEACHAM Chi Omega
Sarah is a sophomore studying journalism. You may contact her at sarah.meacham@ttu.edu.
But in reality, that’s not what it means at all. Sisterhood is a close bond that is lit with the enjoyment of simply being in the company of other sisters and doing something that is beneficial. Here at Texas Tech University, every sorority has a close bond with their sisters. Although we are all part of a different sorority, we all have the same goals and sisterhood is important to all of us. We laugh together, cry together, goof off together, study together, volunteer together, serve together and encourage each other to accomplish great things. Chi Omega has taught its members the true meaning of sisterhood in more ways than just one. This past semester, the new pledge class of 2013 experienced the meaning of sisterhood in a special way. The moment we stepped off the bus at Bid day, we were all overwhelmed by the way every member welcomed us off the bus. Every person was so full of joy and energy and was ecstatic to meet each and every one of us. It really opened our hearts to

these people and this is when we knew we had found what we were all looking for, our home away from home. Shortly after Bid day my pledge class had a day of our own, one that we all looked forward to and one that we will always remember. Right outside of Lubbock is a place called Spirit Ranch, where we were put into three teams and did difficult ropes courses. We learned lessons including trusting your team and encouraging them to keep going, even when the obstacle became challenging. These activities related to life and taught us that no matter what happens or how difficult something can be, we have each other to get through it. It was interesting how before this day we hadn’t really made many connections within the pledge class but while we were doing these obstacles, it felt like we had known each other our whole lives. As time has progressed since that day sisterhood is something that we as Chi Omegas hold close to our heart. Chi Omega’s philanthropy is Make-a-Wish Foundation, and through this organization, our sisterhood has become so strong. One of my most favorite memories of being a Chi Omega was being at our auction and hearing the story of a little girl who had been through so much, yet seemed to be the happiest girl in the world. Not only did I get to share this experience with my sisters but also with all of our families and friends. Being with people who have the same passions as you in life and hearing a story that is life changing is priceless, especially when a little girl has brought a whole room of people together. It’s the moments like these where I see and feel Chi Omega sisterhood. It’s crazy to see how fast the world is moving and lives get changed in the blink of an eye, but being surrounded by a sea of amazing woman who care about you is something I, and we all, will cherish forever.

Some people have even compared buying textbooks to buying health insurance, because it’s super expensive and super stressful.

According to my Big, anyone who owns any of these three devices can use an eBook. Yes, it involves using the Internet, but it has some great advantages. Some websites, like Chegg.com, have a way where you can access your eBook on your laptop and Smartphone. One of the pros of using an eBook is that certain eBooks have links to Youtube videos and articles on Google and Wikipedia. You can also save and highlight certain parts of the text that you find important with a built in toolbar. Sadly, you can’t get money back for your eBook.
Option 2: You know the old saying “sharing is caring”? It definitely applies to textbooks, especially when you share them with a buddy. Sharing with a buddy can be super beneficial to you and your bank account. All you really need is a buddy that you know isn’t a flake or a crook when it comes time I can name off millions of to buy the book. Oddly enough, my prayer was answered in the form of a sassy (although true) post from one of my sisters. Like me, she too hated paying ridiculously expensive reservation fees when buying her books, which got a lot of attention from the freshman members of Alpha Delta Pi. However, when you have 200 girls on one Facebook page, there’s bound to be opposing opinions. As I was enjoying seeing different posts with helpful and not-so-helpful quips (No, I will not take out a loan from the Student Business Services, thank you very much), I devised a helpful list of better options for those who aren’t huge fans of the internet and long lines. Since I’m in love with Chegg.com (Snaps to Brooke James of Chi Omega for telling me about Chegg), it will act as my example since it has really good prices on rental textbooks and free shipping when you return your books at the end of the semester. Option 1: Do you have a tablet? Do you have a laptop? Do you have a Smartphone? If so, great! If not, then I suggest you go back to the stone age.
easiest solution. A lot of the books have been highlighted and may have useful notes in them to help you with that certain class. Don’t let yourself get cheated and pay too much for a book that’s in bad condition. If you need to return the book to your sister/brother, that’s okay. They’re usually super understanding about it. By now, many of you have already bought your books and suffered through the long lines of the bookstores. Let me just offer my congratulations. You survived the hot and sweaty lines of the bookstore and fought off that gross pimple-y guy who wanted that last O-Chem book you had your sights on. A lot of us are going to drop one of our harder courses (cough cough English) and are going to have to buy books for those new classes you have to take, and voila! These tips are going to be super helpful. I definitely saved a lot of gas and grocery money with these helpful tidbits, and hopefully the rest of the Greek Community will too.

10 PRODUCTS I LOVE College females are constantly looking for the best of the best when it comes to beauty products. Not Delta Delta Delta only do we look for the best, Kortni is a sophomore studying but also we look for things Journalism. You may contact her at kortni.robinson@ttu.edu. affordable. I am here to tell you the top 20 products and other things I have bought over the past few years that I deem noteworthy. The items I will be discussing are literally devices and objects I use on a daily basis. Sorry boys, this one is not for you.
KORTNI ROBINSON
Babylips Lipbalm by Mabelline New York I don’t know about you, but with all this Lubbock wind, my lips are chapped 24-7. I cannot live without having chap stick on me at all hours. This being said, I have tried many different products and Babylips is the best in my opinion. It is extremely affordable and convenient. I prefer the clear, mint flavored tube. The balm is made in many different shades and flavors as well. It also has an SPF 20 in it, which is always a plus. Babylips will leave your lips feeling soft and glossy. Clarisonic This product is more of a splurge, starting at $99. For those of you who aren’t aware of what a Clarisonic is, it’s a device used to clean your face. The device is battery operated and comes with a plug in charger. It is handheld and has a small brush-head on the end that you lightly rub against your face with soap for sixty seconds. I use this product religiously, and it is extremely handy because I can just leave it in the shower without ruining it. At first, my face broke out for two weeks because the Clarisonic brings out everything bad under your skin, but since I’ve used it regularly, my skin has been close to spotless. Clinique Super Rescue Antioxidant Night Moisturizer I live by Clinique. I love all of their face products, and enjoy using their makeup as well. This night moisturizer is one of my favorites. After cleaning my face with a toner, and my Clairsonic mentioned above, I dab this all over my face. Basically, this cream is used to perfect any damage done to your skin during the day while you sleep. I highly recommend this to anyone who uses tanning beds, or harsh chemicals for acne. This Antioxidant moisture will leave your skin feel so smooth before you hit the pillow, and runs for $45. Kendra Scott Danielle Earrings in Turquoise These earrings are my ultimate favorite. You can wear turquoise as an accent with almost any outfit. Kendra Scott also has great deals on her website. Every Wednesday she does a sale on certain styles, so you could always hold off and find a steal price. These earrings are the perfect accessory to any outfit: stylish, lightweight, and big enough to make a statement. They are priced at $60.
Tangle Teezer The best $10 I have EVER spent in my life. I am constantly struggling to grow my hair out, and every time after showering, I rip wads of hair out with my comb. The tangle teezer is a small hand held brush with a million little plastic bristles that make combing tangled hair a breeze. This product is one I could never live without. Victoria’s Secret PINK Warm & Cozy Body Mist This scent is so amazing. It’s a body spray that’s lighter than a perfume, so it doesn’t last as long, but it’s nice to wear on the days you are going casual. The scent smells very homey, with scents of vanilla running through it. I am constantly using it. I went through two bottles last semester. It is also cheap: $18 at Victoria’s Secret. Camelbak Water Bottle Everyone needs a water bottle to carry around campus, so why not have a cute one? Camelbaks come in a variety of colors and start at $14.99. They are also neat because they have a unique straw that makes them different than an ordinary plastic one. I also love using my Camelbak because I can refill it and not waste plastic. Jon Hart ID Wallet The Jon Hart mini wallet is just a small open-up wallet with a spot for cash and cards and a clear side for your ID. I love this wallet because it is small and cute. It’s big enough to fit all your cards and a wad of cash, but small enough to not be a nuisance to carry around. You can also attach your keys to the hook on the side. The wallet costs $52 and comes in a wide range of colors. Also, on the front it has a leather spot for your personalized monogram, which is fun too. Biotin Biotin is a vitamin I take on a daily basis. It is of the B-complex and it helps maintain healthy hair, skin, and nails. I love Biotin, and have been taking it for two years now. I have decently long hair and I believe the pill does help. It’s a small, easy-to-swallow pill you take once a day. I definitely recommend it to girls who would like to promote strong nail and hair growth. You can find biotin at so many different places. I personally bought mine at Sprouts grocery store, but it comes from many different places. Curling Iron Glove I curl my hair on a weekly basis and I never do so without my curling glove. I cannot seem to master using a curling iron without it getting a crease in the end from the clamp. With my curling glove, this is not an issue. I simply wear the glove, and instead of using an iron properly, I take my hair and wrap it around the iron instead of using the clamp. The purpose of the glove is to resist heat. With the glove on, you can hold your hand on the iron and not be burned. I love my glove so much, and I just ordered one on Amazon. It was not a specific brand but I know there is a wide variety all for a fairly decent price.

As we plow on through these unbearable winter months, getting stuck in a fashion rut is common. We like to double up on leggings and hide in our broken-in sweatshirts. Awaken your fashion sense with warm and cozy accessories like faux fur accents. Recently, these furry frills have reappeared on the radar of the most fashionable ladies, like the Olsen twins and Victoria Beckham. Even Scott Disick is jumping on the fur bandwagon. Whether you are bold enough for a fur jacket or like to keep it simple with a Topshop fur snood, you are sure to be on trend. When incorporating fur into your ensemble, it is important to remember a few things.

FUR ACCENTS
Without question, fur is bold. This means that the rest of your outfit should act as a canvas for your fur accent. Your get-up should be neutral in color, but that does not mean you can’t play with texture. Leather leggings and a textured sweater keep the look subdued without skimping on style. Playing with texture can be a bit tricky, so remember to mix your items of clothing carefully. In short, steer clear of multiple fur or leather items. Next on the styling list is making sure to combine ladylike and toughness in the right way. Fur is classically thought of as sweet and ladylike. Without an element of toughness, the look loses the modern edge we all wish to possess. This idea of toughness brings oversized hardware and black accessories to mind. Bringing together a luxurious fur snood and harder pieces, like biker boots
and Ray-Bans aviators, allows the classic lady to rock strong pieces effortlessly.

SPRING BREAK READY KYLIe SMITH
Chi Omega
Kylie is a sophomore studying International Business and Marketing. You may contact her at kylie.e.smith@ttu.edu.
McDonald’s for a Big Mac and a large fries with a coke; cheap and easy right? Planning out your meals could save you a lot of trouble. When you go to the grocery store, think about what meals you are going to want during the week. Don’t just go and buy whatever looks good because you skipped lunch and you’re starving. Also, a little splurging never hurt anyone. If you’ve been good for a while, reward yourself with a small dessert. Trying to cut out all unhealthy foods at once is hard and can seem almost impossible, and you are more likely to binge eat when you attempt to do this. TIP #3: Right Mindset Having the right mindset is a key factor for working on a swimsuit-ready body. If you plan on going to the gym, don’t skip because you think it’ll be too hard. Do what you can, even if it’s not much. Going to the gym for 20 minutes is better than not going at all. Setting a goal for yourself is another good idea. It motivates you to do better and shows you how much you have improved over time. Once you reach your goal, set a higher one to keep you determined. If you start to get discouraged, think about the future and why you are working so hard. The results you want are sure to be worth the struggle it is to get there. TIP #5: Gym vs. Boredom
Though still a few weeks away, it’s all everyone can talk about. That’s right, spring break is coming up fast and that one thought has crossed everyone’s mind: “How will I look in my swim suit?” Now let’s be real here, we just got back from Christmas break, and before that was Thanksgiving. Those aren’t exactly holidays that make getting in shape and eating right a tempting option. But now the rush is here to get your spring break bod back, and I have a few helpful tips to get you started. TIP #1: Walking There’s no doubt that Tech’s campus is huge. Walking long distances, like from the Rec to Holden for example, is not the ideal way to go when there is the option of taking a bus. Walking is a great form of exercise, and you won’t even think about it. Walk from class to class, or even to campus from your apartment or house if you live close enough. Yes, it may take longer, but it’s a jump-start on working toward that beach bod. TIP #2: Skip the Spoonful As a college student, healthy eating isn’t exactly the most convenient thing to do. Healthy food is usually more expensive and more time consuming than driving through
When bored, most people go to the fridge or the pantry and search for a snack. If nothing is found, they return to what they were doing and check again in a few minutes. This is not a good thing. You are not hungry; you are bored. Yes, there is a difference. If you are looking for something to do, go to the gym, go do homework, go do anything, just stay away from the boredom eating. You won’t be sorry when you fit perfectly into your bathing suit. Another helpful reminder is to swap an unhealthy snack for a healthy one. If you are hungry but it’s not mealtime, grab a yogurt or an apple instead of chips. It’s a small change, but it will help. TIP #6: Reinforcements It’s never easy to push yourself if you don’t feel like eating right or working out. An accountability partner is a great way to keep you on track. They will be right there with you, helping you not to cheat on whatever promises you’ve made yourself. Everything is easier when you’re just letting yourself down, but having someone depend on you helps you think twice before going for that second dessert. It’s not about changing your whole life. These are just a few little ideas to start working your way towards beach-ready body you’re craving for the big week. It’s hard to stay on track, but keep in mind that you’ll get out of it what you put into it, and it will all be worth it in the end.

TACKLE THE SNOOZE BUTTON Trouble getting up for that 8 a.m. or even 10 a.m. class? Relying on coffee or an energy drink to get you through the morning? There may be some reasons why you are struggling to get out of bed and get a jump-start on your day. Sleep, diet, and exercise all play a role in how you get up and start your day.
KRISTeN FOUSE Chi Omega
Kristen is a freshman studying accounting. You may contact her at kristen.fouse@ttu.edu.
The average person requires approximately 7 to 8 hours of sleep in order to function at their maximum level the next day. If you have that early 8 a.m. you should try to go to sleep anywhere from 11 p.m. to 12 a.m. depending on what time you roll out of bed. Another sleeping factor that you may be unaware of causing you to feel that you cannot wake up to save your life is simply your sleeping cycle. Your body goes through four stages of sleep then goes back down the stages replacing the first stage with REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. The fourth stage in the sleep cycle is known as the deepest sleep because your brain produces delta waves during this stage. If you are trying to get up during this stage of sleep, it’s no wonder you are having trouble. You can purchase an app, such as Sleep Cycle alarm clock, that will help you wake up in your lightest stage of sleep leaving you to feel rested and relaxed.
Snooze buttons are quite handy but if you press that button one too many times you could find yourself running to make it to class on time. If you are guilty of repeatedly hitting snooze, try placing your alarm across the room from you. This will force you to actually get out of bed in order to turn that annoying sound off. Instead of going to crawl back in bed, go wash your face or take a shower or even do a mini-workout to wake you up. Breakfast plays a key role in providing you energy throughout your day. It is not always easy to squeeze in time for breakfast, but you should definitely try to. Sugary donuts or pancakes or a Starbucks Frappuccino are not going to cut it for providing you the proper energy you need. These sugary filled “breakfast” options are ultimately just leading you to a sugar crash resulting in a loss of energy and a feeling of fatigue. Relying on an energy drink or only caffeine will have the same results. A well-balanced breakfast with a good source of protein, such as eggs, is going to be your best option. Add a side of fruit to your breakfast to assist in providing you even more energy. Einstein Bros. Bagels has great, easy, and fast breakfast protein options available. The bagel thin egg whites are packed with protein and will provide you sufficient energy to conquer your 8 am. Shape magazine provides a recipe for three-minute microwave eggs to go recipe for those tight on time. According to Shape, “Pour two blended eggs and milk into a microwave-safe mug for 45 seconds, stir, and then microwave for 45 seconds more.” Going to class is important, so make sure you give yourself enough time to actually wake up and become alert. Get a good night’s sleep, wake up and do a mini-workout or shower, and eat a protein filled breakfast to get your day moving. With these helpful tips, anyone can become a new morning person.

THE SKINNY ON CAMPUS EATING Salad sanity Again, build-your-own is best. Salads are great for lunch, but get killed with all the dressing and high-calorie additives. Ok, so what should go in your salad?
LeSLIe MOSELEY Chi Omega
Leslie is a sophomore studying psychology. You may contact her at leslie.moseley@ttu.edu.
First, choose spinach; it’s a dark leafy green that has a ton of vitamins and other good stuff, trust me it’s magic. Next, protein. I go with grilled chicken, but just make sure you choose a source of protein. I can’t stress this enough. After that, taste the rainbow on all the veggies. The goal is to get a wide variety of color, because different colors mean different benefits. If you want, add some heart-healthy nuts on top. Walnuts are a great choice, and sunflower seeds are great as well. Finally, opt for 2 tablespoons of Balsamic Vinegar and Olive oil, or 2 tablespoons of Balsamic Vinaigrette for the healthiest salad. Some places offer to make your salad into a wrap, if you choose the wrap, go with a wheat tortilla. Are you just confused about how to eat smart on campus? Be confused no more. I’m here to give you the skinny on how to eat all over campus, to help you stay healthy and not “wreck ‘em” the wrong way. Eating healthily on campus is 100% doable, and it doesn’t have to suck. There are a lot of ways we could gain weight with all the food options we have available on campus, and as truly privileged as we are to have so many choices, not all of them are our bodies’ friends. Given that reality, I have created a roadmap for healthy (and delicious) go-to options, regardless of where you decide to eat. Practically speaking, a major point when scanning your food options is to look for the green and white sticker labeled “Smart Choice.” This sticker indicates foods that are 400 (or less) calories and/or 30% less fat. Although some Smart Choices are still better than others for your body, it is a good, general rule-of-thumb to seek out the meals that fall under this category. (*Note: Of course, if you are working out regularly and eating well most of the time, the occasional splurge is perfectly fine, and you should have no reason for guilt.) Now for the tips and tricks: If you can “Build-your-own,” do it. This option lets you decide everything that goes in. For example, ask for “build-yourown-bowl” at Khan’s Mongolian Grill. Choose any meat you want, a rainbow of veggies (how many colors can you pack in that little baggie?), steamed rice, and light soy sauce. (Note*: When I eat here, I ask for double veggies instead of rice. I’m a freak and love vegetables, but rice also isn’t my fav. If rice is a must for you, steamed is by far the healthiest option.) Say “no thanks” to the spring roll offered at the end of the line. It adds a ton more calories and costs you more $.
Fried foods gotta go, sorry It doesn’t have to be a funeral, though. I promise, the less you eat it, the less you crave it. Replace your typical Fried Chicken Sandwich and waffle fries at Chick-fil-A for the Chargrilled Chicken Sandwich and a fruit cup. Over time, the second option is going to be the more appealing one to you. Remember, although exercise (think, 45 minutes of cardio a few times a week) is important to maintaining your health, your diet is the largest percentage you should be concerned with. Taking care of your body requires work, but it is a gift that we are privileged to take care of. Food is not the enemy, its your fuel that lets you be your best self everyday, so choose the best fuel. The full list of Nutrition Facts is in the link below. The healthiest options are labeled in green, but some green-labeled items are still high in calories. Scan through your green options and make your selection from the healthiest ones. Fat, Carbs, Fiber, and Protein quantities are just as, or more, important. (Hint* Minimizing fat and carbs, while maximizing fiber and protein is key.) http://www.depts.ttu.edu/hospitality/smartchoices/Nutrition%20Facts.htm The “Hospitality Services” website is an invaluable resource. I repeat: a section of the Tech website is helpful, organized, and easy to access.
