AND THE AWARD GOES TO…

Each year our Center of Campus Life puts on an Awards Banquet for Sorority and Fraternity Life as an appreciation and a pat on Kappa Kappa Gamma the back for all improving Editor-in-Chief organizations. Usually this Malley is a junior studying awards ceremony has been Advertising. You may contact her at held in a dinner type setting, malley.rasco@ttu.edu. and this year, they made it simpler by inviting more people to the Allen Theatre in our Student Union Building on Wednesday, April 9th.

MALLEY RASCO

Every sorority and fraternity member strives to be the best they can be in each category and “audit” what they have done within the year. This year, The Most Outstanding Risk Management award changed to Special Recognition in Honor of Freada and Mark Warren, won by Alpha Chi Omega. Chapter awards are ranged from academic excellence to Lifetime Achievement within Alumni awards. With the highest GPA in the IFC, Fiji took the award for Academic Success, with IFC Alpha Gamma Rho taking the award for being the Most Improved GPA. Education programs are set up in order to teach your chapter rituals and traditions that were created by the founders of the sorority or fraternity. Sorority values live with you long after your collegiate days. Kappa Delta won the award for the Most Outstanding Education Program.

Every sorority and fraternity donates hours of their time to philanthropies held dear to their chapter. Chi Omega was recognized for achieving a goal of $65 per member donated to Make a Wish Foundation, as well as Kappa Kappa Gamma for raising up to $80 per member for Children’s Miracle Network. The Most Money Raised and Donated award went to Kappa Alpha Theta for raising up to $100 per member for CASA! That is such an incredible accomplishment. Delta Phi Omega sorority won the award for Outstanding Service Project. Philanthropies allow Greek members to realize they are a part of something larger than themselves and give back to the community. Individual awards are also given out to Greek members. The Multicultural Greek Council Scholarship went out to both Suzanna Akal of Delta Phi Omega and to Jennifer Nguyen of Lambda Delta Psi. The Callie M. Chalk Panhellenic Scholarship went to Nicole Dunn of Pi Beta Phi. Living Your Values awards are nominated by other chapters on campus and were given to Megan Anderson and Alyssa Edstrom of Alpha Chi Omega, Kelles Garrison of Pi Beta Phi, Ashley Peterson of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and all chapter awards to Delta Delta Delta and Kappa Delta. The IFC and NPC gave one Most Outstanding Award to each a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. For IFC, these awards went to Christopher Mitchell of Phi Gamma Delta, Charles Mitchell of Phi Gamma Delta, Bruce Jacobson of Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Gatewood Brown of Phi Gamma Delta. For NPC, these awards went to Andrea Britten of Chi Omega, Meredith Gavin of Alpha Chi Omega, Hayden Turner of Kappa Alpha Theta, and Alex Cabrera of Kappa Kappa Gamma. The Golden Raider award goes to one female and one male for excelling in Academics, and being ambassadors to Fraternity and Sorority Life. Lauren Cocker of Pi Beta Phi and Bruce Jacobson of Sigma Phi Epsilon took this award. Last but not least, Kappa Delta took home the Dean’s Cup which symbolizes their excellence and being Top Chapter of the Year. Congratulations, Kappa Delta!

WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING WITH OUR TUITION RATES So you know how college tuition is soooo expensive? Do you realize that soon it won’t even be worth it in the long run to attend college?

BAILEY BELL Pi Beta Phi

Bailey is a sophomore studying biology. You may contact her at bailey.bell@ttu.edu.

Well here is what our political system and the Obama Administration are doing about it. The good thing is that President Obama has put focusing on the rising tuition rates of college on his presidential agenda. In August 2013, during a bus tour in Pennsylvania, he spoke about a new ranking system that would allow the federal government to give “grades” to the colleges located in the US. The system would grade based off of who gives the best overall value. White House officials have said the rankings would focus on each universities ability to keep tuition rates and student loan debt low, while keeping a high graduation rate and solid post-graduate employment rate. He then wants to base government funding off of these rankings, and keep funding from those colleges who have higher default rates than graduation rates. Obama has agreed that these reforms will not please everyone, and he is absolutely right. Republicans are questioning whether this is another political speech used for politics and politics only, or if it is truly something that Obama will push forward. Yes, it is easy to assume that Obama is only politically speaking here, but if both sides could get together on this I believe it could help keep universities accountable. However, as always there is a dark shadow over this whole system that you could call “Corruption”. As the system is proposed, it opens up a huge availability for government controlled pricing and government endorsing where it shouldn’t be found. Universities are largely state run and this would bring in the big business of government to control what has long since been a state responsibility. I find this system pleasing in the original sense, however the more I look into it, I notice places where it needs to be reformed. Basing government funding on these rates would just simply be unnecessary. It would however, be very beneficial to high schoolers and their parents in choosing a college who will offer the

best value to them without the need of funding control. They will be able to look at a fair and unbiased representation of exactly what they will be paying for. The universities themselves will then be in competition to provide the best value. Lower tuition rates will be more attractive to the potential college student, and therefore lead to high competition tuition-wise; forcing the rates down across the board as universities fight for the highest ranking and student registration. Of course, we cannot expect a major drop. But it should be A drop, which is fairly significant. If only the universities come to the realization that in the near future, we could very well experience a time when the cost of college is simply not worth it then the proposal was a success. We very well may start seeing a huge decline in college registration as high school students begin to prefer stating a career that doesn’t require a degree over inheriting nearly $80,000 in debt within four years. Some frightening statistics found on thehill.com include “the average tuition at public four-year colleges has risen more than 250 percent, while a typical family’s income only increased 15 percent”. That is huge. College is no longer affordable for the middle class families. Another alarming statistic is that “Federal student debt topped $1 trillion in July, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, while private banks have issued another $200 billion in student loans. Aside from mortgages, student loans are now the most widely held debt in the country, according to the Federal Reserve”. If that alone doesn’t scare you into doing something about this rising cost, I don’t know what will. It is terrifying that young adults have lost interest in gaining a higher education simply because of how much it costs. Pay attention to what your congressmen is doing, and what other political elite are saying! Our education here in the United States is declining at all levels. Low education quality leads to low income rates, and later to high debt rates. If we want progress, we have to start at the core, and that includes increasing the quality of education and also the affordability. If we have an astronomically high education quality rate, but only a small portion of the population can attend, we are not getting anywhere. Yes, this proposal from President Obama is a huge step in the right direction, but we are many, many leaps away from a solution.

“WE GO TOGETHER” MONMOUTH 2014 is Read Lead Achieve, which inspires a lifelong love of reading that can potentially create a more literate society. That being said, to be admitted into the event on Thursday, the member and their date are required to each bring a book, which is then donated to those important philanthropies. Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi come together in celebration of wrapping up the year. It is awesome to be able to have a date party in celebration of the founding of your sorority. Monmouth is Kappa Kappa Gamma and Pi Beta Phi’s annual date party. Both of the sororities were found at Monmouth College in Illinois. Pi Phi was founded in April of 1867 and Kappa was founded as a women’s fraternity in 1870—years before the word “sorority” would even be introduced. Now, the women of Kappa and Pi Phi join together at all universities across the United States to commemorate. There are several different ways celebrated, but at Tech we make it a big deal! Thursday evening there was a carnival at Kappa’s lodge. There were bouncy houses, lots of food and a whole bunch of fun. Pi Phi and Kappa at Texas Tech also happen to have similar philanthropies. Kappa’s philanthropy is Reading is Fundamental, which is the nation’s largest nonprofit children’s literacy organization. Pi Phi’s philanthropy

Friday evening was “We Go Together” and was located at Cactus Courtyard in the Depot District. There is a different theme each year, so this year was Grease. Everyone dressed in 50’s clothes; poodle skirts and some couples even went as Sandy and Danny. The pianist from Louie Louie’s Piano Bar was hired to perform. It really put a 50’s spin on all of our favorite songs and personally, I believe it was an awesome idea. Saturday night was the formal event “Grease Is The Word”. Everyone in attendance was dressed to the nines. I think I can speak for everybody when I say that it was a little confusing being on the bus for, what seemed to be, 30 minutes. However, it was a real treat when we arrived at Caprock Winery. There was yummy hors d’oeuvres being served, alongside some dancing to great songs played by the DJ. Monmouth is always a fabulous time, but this year seemed to top any date party that I’ve ever been to. The locations and entertainment were amazingly well organized and put together so well. Everyone who went had a blast and the turnout was tremendous. It is great to be able to have a date party in celebration of the founding of your sorority.

SPRING BREAK THEN AND NOW It never ceases to amaze

me how much things and people can change over time, but that has never been more evident than in these past four years of college. Freshman

year is all about getting the biggest group to go to the beach and doing all the wild and crazy things you never thought you’d do. But senior year, spring break is about spending it with the ones you love and enjoying a holiday that doesn’t revolve around pounding as many vodka shots in an hour as possible. Being that I was never the wild child in high school, never even given a curfew, my freshman year of college was a huge change of pace for me. I immediately formed a large group of friends and we made it our mission to attend every social event we could. Throughout the rest of the semester and into the next, we didn’t miss a single party. By the time spring break rolled around, we could not have been more excited for a week of doing nothing, but what we did best: partying. In addition to Tech’s spring break, A&M, the University of Georgia and the University

big mixture of high school and college friends in Gulf Shores, Ala. We spent every waking moment partying, socializing, tanning on the beach and staying up until 5 a.m. It was one of the craziest times of my life, but when things started winding down and it was time to go home, I was relieved, as I could not have been more exhausted. Come senior year, however, my life has drastically changed from when I was 18 years old. Almost four years later, I am now of the legal drinking age and finishing my last semester of college. The different experiences over the years have taught me life lessons and maturity, leading me to a somewhat scary, new chapter in life. I am becoming an adult. This year, I spent the first half my spring break relaxing by the lake at my ranch and the second half, living it up in my hometown of Austin with high school friends. Being that UT’s break was the week before, I didn’t have to worry about anyone being out of town because they all had class. Needless to say, I spent my week with the ones I love and, while I had a wild night or two, it wasn’t what determined my entire week. With that said, I would not take back one thing from my freshman year spring break in Gulf Shores. I look back and value the memories and experiences I had because it was the right year to do so. However, as you get older, things change and people grow up. Stringing yourself out on a beach in an alcoholic haze for a week just isn’t as appealing.

THE THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER NEEDS YOUR HELP

Helping people is awesome and helping organizations affiliated through Texas Tech is even Alpha Delta Pi more awesome. Come on people. We’re Greek; MaryBeth is a freshman studying Natural Resources Management. all we do is help people You may contact her at MaryBeth. (Hello? Philanthropy?). holm@ttu.edu. As I was working on an article before my Horse Evaluation class, my TA came to me and insisted that I get the word out about this awesome opportunity to help the Texas Tech Therapeutic Riding Center. Of course, I love the Equestrian Center and would love to get the word out.

MARYBETH HOLM

The Therapeutic Riding Center at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center (where the Equestrian Team practices) has been chosen to compete in a national competition against other therapeutic riding centers across the country. For those who don’t know what therapeutic riding is, it’s basically helping people with disabilities of all ages to help them physically, emotionally, and socially. Recently, we just retired one of our beloved horses, King, who is this beautiful Norwegian Fjord Horse (like the horses in Frozen). So many little kids with special needs have said their first words on him and have even competed in Special Olympics and won. King has also helped the Therapeutic Riding Center with numerous studies on Autism and how Hippotherapy, another word for therapeutic riding, helps these kids. Today, King is happily living with his mate, Queen, at the Equestrian Center. However, we still need another horse that is similar to King in temperment and stride length (The horse can’t be too bouncy or else the rider would fall off). What better horse to replace King than a Gypsy Vanner? A Gypsy Vanner is a beautiful, small draft horse (Smaller than a Budweiser Horse for those who don’t know horse breeds) that is really, really, really expensive. Most Gypsy Vanners go for at least $7000. Gypsy Vanners are also the prettiest horses you’ll ever see, even in pictures. They are usually black and white and have long, flowing manes and ankle hair (Which is the only attractive leg hair you’ll ever see). Gypsy Vanners are basically unicorns but without the horn. Gypsy Vanners are large enough (Remember: Small Budweiser Horse) where an adult with special needs could be put on the horse and not damage the horses spine. You have to admit that this is a pretty awesome opportunity to help out the Equestrian Center. Since we are young adults and we just love social media (You know who you are), the Lexlin Gypsy Ranch, the company who is hosting the competition, opened a poll on their Facebook page so you can vote for the Texas

Tech Therapeutic Riding Center. Voting is open until July 3, 2014 and you can vote every day. Yes, you read that correctly. Every day until July 3rd. Ask Athena will also have a link on her Twitter page (@AskAthenaTTU) so those who are constantly on Twitter can vote too. I can’t stress how awesome of an opportunity this is!! Thanks again and go vote. Like, now!

TORNADO SEASON As you’re walking to class, take a second to look around and realize all of the changes that comes along with the spring season. Texas Tech University has many bright and colorful new plants sprouting from the ground this time of year. However, as we realize all of the beautiful things about spring, it’s important to know the dangerous things that come with it too. protect himself or herself from a tornado?

SARAH MEACHAM Chi Omega

Sarah is a sophomore studying journalism. You may contact her at sarah.meacham@ttu.edu.

How does someone prepare and

This past week, I was sitting in my dorm room when all of a sudden the whole dorm was alerted by a tornado warning that was issued for this area. It continued to repeat itself for a few minutes and I realized that I wasn’t really sure what to do in case a tornado were actually about to strike the ground. My roommate came into my room and also was wondering what we were supposed to do in this kind of situation. 1. Avoid the outdoors in any and all circumstances. It’s not worth any risk to run outside to your car, or your friends dorm or house. Stay put where you are because predicting where a tornado will touch down is nearly impossible.

2. Find a room with no windows and where none of the walls are facing toward the outdoors. This is vital and very important because if a tornado were to set down, you would have more protection being toward the center of the building with closed walls and no windows than in a room on the outside of the house. 3. If for some reason you are outside, know what a forming tornado looks like and know how to find the closest shelter. When a tornado is forming in the sky it looks like a circle of clouds with a discoloration in the sky. However, there may still be a tornado forming in the area even if the sky may not seem discolored. Immediately find suitable shelter!

4. Once you have found shelter, do not leave until you have heard word that the tornado is no longer in the area. This is one of the most important tips you should follow with any storm warning. Just because you have been under shelter for a long time doesn’t mean it is safe to come out. 5. It’s a strong suggestion to have a storm kit ready to take with you or have it in the room you would take shelter. Having some water, food and even a first aid kit handy is a good idea considering what can happen when a severe thunderstorm, tornado, or multiple storms are coming at you You can never be too prepared when it comes to safety. It’s very important to make sure that everyone is safe around you. Having these five steps in your mind if a tornado happens to be in the area will help you with a safe guide if the tornado sets on the ground. Always be prepared and aware because you never know when a tornado will strike the ground.

COLLEGE MEASURED BY EXPERIENCES

To d a y, h o w e v e r, t h e traditional family model has evolved. Our country is one of the most technologically advanced and economically stable nations in the world, Chi Omega thus the chance at a higher education is now being Daniel is a junior studying increased for students each Advertising. You may contact her at day. With college becoming daniel.gracen@ttu.edu. a norm, the “college experience” is also up for debate. The ideal college experience for students in today’s world is one that not only shapes them as a person, but also aids with professional development and career preparation, while allowing financial stability upon graduation.

DANIEL GRACEN

Traditionally, college is thought to consist of class and work, with nothing in between. This notion no longer rings true. Today, the college experience encompasses personal development as well. Personally, college has been an opportunity to immerse myself in as many different groups and types of people as possible. Students can strengthen his or her faith through religious organizations, as there are so many different outreach programs available targeting college students. Students can even learn to make friends more effectively and hone meaningful relationships by going to different social settings. We have all reflected on our freshman year of college and giggled at least once at a situation that was not as favorable, but we learned from it. College is a place for growth and change personally as well as professionally. College students are expected to be poor during the four short years, where ramen noodles and dorm food is the primary diet. In recent years, however, students are being expected to have employment in college with higher paying careers. According to the News Observer, approximately 18 million dollars will be funneled to college students

7

statewide per year for college student salaries. Students are expected to gain higher-paying and more prestigious jobs to prepare them for the workforce upon graduation. To have an ideal college experience, a student is expected to have a job in college that will allow him or her to be somewhat financially stable and able to pay for basic living expenses stressfree. Along with that comes the competitiveness of internships that are near mandatory for college graduates to have had. Financial stability is a constant point of debate for lawmakers. According to Forbes Magazine, in August 2013 the total student loan amount surpassed 1 billion dollars. Some believe that college loan rates do not require congressional action, however, students are graduating with more debt now than nationwide credit debt. Higher education is meant to allow students to become functioning members of society, and in order to have an ideal college experience, a student needs to have some sort of financial stability to graduate with and not stress over throughout his or her four years. College is difficult for almost every student. In my opinion, college becomes more difficult the more applicable it becomes to one’s career. My major-specific classes are some of my favorites, but also some of the most difficult. Students in college are expected to graduate not only with social, professional and financial planning skills, but also skills that can be applied for their future careers. College prepares someone to be a well-rounded individual in all aspects, especially for his or her career. Education, therefore, is expected to directly prepare someone to find a job in the tough job market and also be successful in what he or she desires. This is a key piece to the ideal college experience, the ability to not only succeed personally but also professionally. College classes can directly help with this, and prepare a student for the obstacles that he or she may face in a career path through senior seminars and research opportunities. Students have higher expectations placed on them to succeed with each graduating class. The ideal college experience is one that cannot be defined by statistics or words, but more in experiences and memories made. Hopefully, upon tossing the graduation cap in the air, a college graduate can say that he or she is a well-rounded person that is ready to take on the world and the challenges it brings.

RUSH SHOPPING FOR DUMMIES

KAYLA CHANDLER

Kappa Kappa Gamma

Kayla is a freshman studying Journalism. You may contact her at kayla.chandler@ttu.edu.

Every little aspect of rush is carefully put together, including the dress your best. You will code. Shopping can be tough, but following a few guidelines may help probably go through it you impress all the anxious PNMs. 1. Dress Up and Wear Make-Up really fast anyways from all the re-applying you’ll be doing. Oversized t-shirts and norts are not what you should be looking at 2. Simple Patterns when you shop for your recruitment outfits. You are trying to welcome Even if that fabulous floral sundress is fifty percent off, don’t buy the PNMs into your house by doing so in a fashionable way. So doll it for rush. Less is more in this situation. Patterns can sometimes be yourself up. Treat yourself to some new make-up to ensure you’ll look distracting and you don’t want the PNM to be daydreaming when you’re trying to explain your sorority’s philanthropy. Most of the time you will have an exact guideline of what you have to buy from your sorority, so don’t try to branch off of that. 3.

Don’t Settle For A Size

Don’t try to convince yourself that you’ll lose enough wait to fit into that smaller size. Besides, you may not even lose weight in the area of your body you were hoping for. Get what feels comfortable and looks good on you right then and there. You don’t want a super cute dress to turn into a super horrible disaster. 4.

Stay Away From Designer Stuff

Being a PNM is already intimidating enough, we know because we’ve all been there. When they see your five David Yurman bracelets, Tory Burch flats, and designer jeans it may make them think that they need to have those things in order to be in your sorority. Keep the expensive jewelry to a minimum and hide the tags. Shop around the mall and in little boutiques to find reasonably priced, trendy outfits. You may even have a little luck online! Besides, who doesn’t like to save a little money? 5.

No Rips, Tears, or Snags

You will most likely have to buy some kind of jeans/pants for one of the days of recruitment. Remember that you are trying to look presentable and not trashy. So toss those ripped jeans and find yourself a new goodlooking pair. Same goes for dresses, you have to be careful in some of the material your dresses are made of. They snag easily! Don’t let your worries get the best of you; shopping can be fun and painless. You just have to do it the right way. Try on everything you think will work, clothes can surprise you! It may be ugly on the rack, but it could look fabulous on you. Don’t be afraid to rock the runway, ladies. Happy Recruitment Season!

In a conversation with point guard and leading scorer for the game, Austin Durha m he gave me his pre-game thoughts. “Before the game, I’d look into my teammates eyes and I’d say to them “you strong?” and they’d say to me “we strong” and I would say “then let’s go.” Then we would all put our hands on the ball together and say the Delt creed, the energy would transfer through the ball to all of us equally and we would all play and win as one. This is how we won the championship two years in a row.” As you can tell, Durham along with his teammates is very passionate about the game, and they enjoy coming together as a team to win. The game was extremely competitive, with both teams staying within ten points of the other the whole time. The leading scorer was Austin Durham with thirteen points, followed by Aldo Quiroga with eight and Kash Anderson with six. At half-time the score was 18-19 with Delt leading. The game ended with a final score of 36-39. The Delts were extremely excited to be named back-to-back champions. Matt Temple shared with me some of his thoughts about the season. He said he loved playing with his teammates and that by them buying into playing as a team is what made them so great. Temple also stated “we all play our individual roles and when we put all of it together we are a tough matchup for anyone.” Temple said that this championship was a battle though, and he gave credit to Phi Delt for playing so tough up to the end. He believes that it is a “testament to both teams that it was a low scoring, grind it out game.” He also says he is sure they will be seeing Phi Delt again next year.

After conversations with many of the Delts on the A team anyone can tell they have a great bond that causes them to do so well on the court. These types of relationships are what make the Greek society so great. Who knew some of these young men would be finding their life-long best friends while tearing it up on an intramural basketball court? Congrats to Delta Tau Delta on a great season.

SHOWS YOU SHOULD BE WATCHING animations throughout each episode, which helps depict the “diary” feel from the title. For the nostalgic, think a TV-MA version of Lizzie McGuire; just substitute that Disney family entertainment with the brashness of “Skins UK.”

With a blunt, honest title like “My Mad Fat Diary” it isn’t hard for this show to grasp your attention right away. MMFD tells the tale of a girl, Rachel (Rae) Earl just being released from a mental health rehabilitation center after a failed suicide attempt. Rae now has to try and go back to a normalized life outside of therapy. Throughout the show, Rae and a few other characters struggle with serious issues such as coming out, body image (either anorexia or bingeeating), and self-harm. Despite the severity of these issues, MMFD manages to stray from constant morbidness with Rae’s amazing sense of humor. The show is narrated from Rae’s point of view, giving the audience an all-exclusive pass to her most intimate thoughts, which provide for laughs at her crude, honest commentary. A commentary full of truths we all wish we could admit to ourselves. Accompanied with her inner most private thoughts are funny doodled

As Rae struggles to readjust to her new life in the “real world,” she reluctantly attends therapy sessions to help deal with her mother and a new gang of friends. Rae’s long time best frenemy, Chloe, introduces her to several new people like Archie and Finn who open up to her in completely different, and unexpected ways. Rounding up the group are the spunky and free-spirited Chop and Izzy respectively who provide the comic relief when there is tension within the group. Rae also has her friends from rehab and has to learn how to manage her time between the two opposing groups of friends. Despite the obstacles thrown her way, mostly her own insecurities, Rae realizes that people actually admire her and aspire to be like her. SPOILER ALERT: She comes to see that she is not defined by her weight, or how she looks, and understands that skinny and normalcy are not mutually exclusive. Despite the fact that she’s “ugly,” she finds love and friendship and I think that is a great message for people to be able to watch. My Mad Fat Diary is also based on a true story, by the real Rae Earl’s life and diaries, which further enhances the show’s the message of acceptance because it proves that this doesn’t just happen in a fictional world, it happens in real life as well. I don’t want to give away too much of the show because I strongly encourage you all to watch it. So, good news! There are only six hour-long episodes in Season One, so it is not hard to catch up by the Season Two premiere! Since it is a British television show, it won’t be easily available for you to watch on television or even Hulu and Netflix, but hunting down for livestream or download links online is totally worth it. My Mad Fat Diary returns for season 2 on Monday, February 17th on the British channel, E4.
