THE LODGE HOUSE: Ribbon House | Fall 2009
design critic: Cameron, Wu
RIBBON By using folding surface as a spatial mediator between the two existing lodge house, the project intends to maximize the spatial capacity generated by these surfaces. In spite of the limitation in inhabitable space, continuous and intricated space is achivable and interwined themselves within the confined terrain.

North Elevation
The slender edge of the folding wall creates an elevation that appeals in terms of surface in contrary to volume that forms a barrier to the outside. Thus, the surface acts a piece that extends the urban space into the interior of the house, or vice versa. The boundary between exterior and interior is erased.

PLAN from WITHOUT | Fall 2009
Analogous to the Jordan Curve Theorem,1 four spaces appear to be strictly separated from the “outside”, composed of both air and earth. An ambiguous boundary definition of the attenuated, wedge shaped entrance foyer makes it unclear whether this space is the true fourth sibling of the three rooms inside, or rather is part of the “outside” space and, by extension, more connected to the hidden room itself.

This project intends to create an delusion of space by the assumption that man is unable to perceive rotational angle that imposes among different rooms. The building is composed by these ramps that weaves around rooms in circle and eclipse. The hidden room is unperceivable as a result of the malfunctioning human senses generated by these endlessly rotating ramps and the uncefined organization of these circular rooms.

THE LOCK BUILDING: Tri-fold Structure | Fall 2009
HO KAN WONG | Harvard Graduate School of Design design critic: Cameron, Wu
The building is a structure that splits in three ends, two of them land on the lock, the remaining one stretches towards the city in the noth. Thus in a superficial level, the structure acts as an enormous bridge that links the lock-yard and the city. While in an introversive level, since the rooms (studios) and the internal corridors are all hinged on the folding structure, when the building folds to rise itself, the internal organization would reposit consequently by sliding or elevating through space. Thus the organization of the interior transforms whenever the building is moved by the locks.

The project is to design a molded module that is multifacted to provide faces for the bonding of modules. There are 4 ways by how the modules are aggregated to achieve different porosity and curvature of the a structural surface (wall).

MATTER:THICK WALL: Reading Wall | Spring 2010
The project make the thick wall into a space for reading. The wall is an aggregation of single class of hexagonal modules. Spatial variation is obtained by the proposed configurations of the modules to address different scenarioes: reading, book storage, circulation and group activities. The building is perceived as an additive and parasitic structure that could be constructed as both an isolated pavilion or attached unit to buildings.

MATTER:BUILDING: Library for Rare Books | Spring 2010
design critic: Danielle, Etzler
Posited in the center of the north ends, the library takes over an exisitng library and reserves itself for rare books. The site is a narrow lot that opens to two streets embracing different traffic conditions and events. Therefore it is critical to address the diverse conditions at both ends in terms of provision of access and lingering space. Taking the advantage of strong axis oriented by the elongated site, the project attempts to create a serial and articulated library space integrated with reading rooms and bookstack where they are stacked, drifted and connected.

Historically, approach of designing a performing space, either a theater or a concert hall, is to elaborate its privileged and ceremonial nature by establishing architectural monumentality in its elevation and scale, however, such designing approach is necessary to be adjusted since a cultural shift have occurred in the idea of theater-going: from privileged to collective; ceremonial to contingent. The preliminary concept of the project is to redefine (conceal) such monumentality. In fact, an integrated folding landscape is draped among the complex of the performance hall, to have this system of landscape to fuse different entities that are current suspended: performing space, public space for collective events and waterfronts.

STAGE by the SEA The concept of planning The central theme of the project is to create stages of different natures that incorporates into the waterfront, and to reveal the ‘rhythm’ and ‘dynamic’ nature of ocean and music through architectural expression. The primary strategy is to reorganize and designate the vast site according to seperate program zones and to develop 3 outdoor stages at spots with advantageous access to water. These seaside stages are designed to allow different types of performance to take place. Another focus of the design is to develop upon interrelationships between entities such as the ocean and the coast, the coast and the stage, as well as exterior and interior stages. These are the elements that are not addressed and articulated. In order to maximize the multiplicity of performance, the exterior and interior performing space is well connected, for instance the large auditorium to the west of the site is equipped with rear stage that can open fully to connect with the outdoor audience space in terms of physicality and visual effects. The west and the center part of the site is chained with pedestrian bridge and path that is connected with the existing railway bridge reaching out to the city, hence to facilitate site access which is a sequential experience from the city to the coast and to the far-reaching ocean.
