In order to meet expanding emergency department volumes, UIHC is undertaking a renovation and expansion of their ED, creating new Pediatric and Behavioral Health observation suites and allowing for increased throughput, while maintaining existing operations with minimal disruption.

HOK along with the architect of record, CMBA Architects, are currently designing a major expansion and renovation for the Roy Carver Pavilion Level One Emergency Department.

To keep up with an increased number of patients, UIHC required a larger space to accommodate not only patients, but additional staff to efficiently provide the best patient care.

The first Phase includes a 2 story expansion for a Behavioral Health focused ED. The first floor will include single enhanced BH observation rooms which have capacity to flex to overflow as standard exam rooms and be switch to negative air pressure for infection controlled unit. A separate area which will add a state of the art 55T Siemens MRI machine. The level 2 plan serves as crisis stabilization units for Adults and adolescents with shared support areas.

The second phase of the project includes the renovation of the north portion of the emergency department into an expanded Pediatric focused area. The newly designed unit will include behavioral health safe rooms for ages up to 12. The emergency will remain fully operational through construction of the project.
