When future generations look back at 2014, we are confident they
will consider it a landmark year in the history of The Holden Arboretum. We began with the successful conclusion of our first major capital campaign and ended the year by signing the agreement that launched integration of the Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden. Those two events will set the stage for so many things to come. Visitors already are seeing the positive changes brought about by the success of the New Leaf campaign. In 2013, we completed the Eliot and Linda Paine Rhododendron Discovery Garden and the R. Henry Norweb Jr. Tree Allée. In 2014, we started work on two more exciting projects: the restoration of Corning Lake and Lotus Pond, and the construction of the Judith and Maynard H. Murch IV Canopy Walk with the Kalberer Family Emergent Tower. We look forward to the completion of those projects in the upcoming year, confident that they will transform the landscape of the Arboretum. The Sept. 14 agreement integrating the Arboretum and the Botanical Garden also is having a major impact on the landscape. Both institutions have long histories in the region as leaders in naturebased education, standard bearers for horticultural excellence and stewards of our natural resources. As an integrated institution, we will have a far greater reach than we could possibly have alone, or even as partners working together toward a common goal. Together, we can help create a greener Northeast Ohio with residents well versed in the need to conserve and protect our natural resources. And while those two events top our list of achievements in 2014, we can proudly say that they were not our only successes. During the course of the year, we moved forward with stream restoration projects to improve the water quality in Pierson Creek and the East Branch of the Chagrin River; we conducted research projects that broadened our understanding of the delicate ecosystems of our native forests; we turned the former sugarbush building into the Working Woods classrooms; we improved guest orientation with clearer signs and maps; and we touched the lives of thousands of students and adults who visited the Arboretum for classes, field trips and tours. These successes reminds us all of the importance of the vision laid out by the Arboretum’s Board of Directors in 2009 – to create a Northeast Ohio in which trees, forests, and gardens provide maximum ecological and social benefits to the region’s people and communities. That vision remains as valid today as it did six years ago, and we will continue to work to make it a reality.

Albert Fairchild Holden Society The Albert Fairchild Holden Society was established in 1998 to recognize those individuals whose generosity and foresight supports The Holden Arboretum with either a planned gift (will, trust, insurance, life income arrangement such as an annuity, etc.) or conservation easement. This year we recognize all individuals, those living and deceased, whose philanthropy places them in this distinguished group of donors.
