2018–2019 Report of Appreciation
DEAR FRIENDS of Holderness
As I ref lect back on this past year, I am humbled by the incredible generosity of the Holderness family. When I wrote this letter a year ago, we still had almost $1 million dollars to raise to be able to start construction of the new academic building. One year later, a 35,000 square foot science and math building is fully under construction. This progress would not have been possible without the generosity and leadership of our remarkable community. In reading this report, I am reminded that generosity and leadership go together at Holderness. Our definition of leadership is “each person’s journey to serve and empower others.” The stories and articles in this Report of Appreciation reveal the exceptional commitment to service leadership that is evident in the Holderness culture. Yes, it is impressive that we were able to raise over $27 million for the exciting Elevating Academics campaign, and for only the second time, we were able to raise more than $1.5 million for the Holderness Fund. This report gives insight into how we did it and who we are. Buildings that support our programs and people are essential, but please don’t be distracted by new construction and money raised. None of that would be possible without the amazing people who make up the Holderness community.
groups, including during this 50th anniversary year. And Tracy’s contagious love for and commitment to Holderness has inspired us to rename the Distinguished Service Award in her honor. You will also read about alumni and parents whose service leadership has empowered little Holderness to dream big and follow the closing line of our mission statement: “to work for the betterment of humankind and God’s creation.” As I ref lect on this past year, I continue to be blessed, deeply grateful, and humbled so serve the Holderness family. It is because of the amazing people who make up Holderness that allow me to say being the head of Holderness is truly the best job in education.n With my deep appreciation,
In this issue you will read about the excitement the new facility is creating. You will also read about some of the people who made that project possible. In addition, you will be inspired by the commitment by alumni and parents. In particular, this report highlights a dynamic duo from the class of 1989, Fred Harbison and Tracy McCoy Gillette. Fred has generously volunteered his time for 26 years to lead Out Back

and his unwavering support of Holderness
I
t is possible that Dwight Mason’s ’57 long and distinguished career in public service can be traced back to his election as a floor leader at the end of the fourth form, a role that included membership on the Student Council and Student Court. Dwight recalls that the faculty always ratified their court decisions without comment—astounding, in retrospect, since that sometimes resulted in expulsion. However, he points out that classmate Bob Backus decided that the accused needed defense counsel, which he proceeded to provide, laying the foundation for a future as an attorney and New Hampshire state legislator. Dwight also joined Debating, which turned out to be a very formative experience and perhaps his most rewarding activity at Holderness. Dwight and Bob won the New Hampshire Beginners’ Debate Championship at Dartmouth and were selected to compete at the National Debate Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. At the end of the fifth form, he was elected school vice president (which included the presidency of the Student Council) and House Leader of Niles. He also managed the baseball team, joined trail crew to engage his love of the woods, and won the Latin 2 Prize.
2
Following Holderness, Dwight attended Brown and found that he had qualified for what amounted to sophomore status because of his preparation at Holderness. In fact, one of the essay topics students could choose to write for the Brown English placement exam was essentially the previous year’s national debate question. Dwight recalls he even had enough time to go back and insert an outline at the beginning! He graduated cum laude and with High Honors in history and then received a master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley and later served as a MidCareer Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He then embarked on a nearly three-decade career with the US Foreign Service including postings in Tangier, Morocco; Barranquilla, Colombia; Quito, Ecuador; Washington, DC, and Ottawa, Canada, where he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy. There he played an instrumental role in trade negotiations, defense relations, environmental matters, maritime boundary disputes, and fisheries matters. In 1994 President Clinton appointed Dwight as Chair, United States Section, of the Permanent Joint Board

on Defense—US and Canada. The board is responsible for advising the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of State on US-Canadian politicalmilitary issues. He participated in negotiations regarding the environmental cleanup of former US military installations in Canada, two renewals of the North American Aerospace Defense (NORAD) Agreement, and the restructuring of binational command arrangements in North America in light of the creation of US Northern Command. The board also focused on ballistic missile defense of North America, increased Canadian naval support to US counter-narcotic efforts in the Caribbean, and joint intelligence estimate on threats to North America. The board is viewed as a symbol of the special relationship shared by the two countries. Dwight has since donated copies of some of his correspondence with President Clinton to the school’s Archives. Dwight has been a frequent author, penning articles in publications such as National Security Law Report and Foreign Service Journal and for the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, where he served as Senior Associate of the Canada Project for 10 years. Dwight credits his Holderness education for many of his successes at Brown and later in the Foreign Service. He says that Mr. Henderson and Mr. Abbey stand out among his teachers, recalling that Mr. Abbey’s English class was the hardest but also the most interesting. It was a full year of studying poetry and writing 1,000 words analyzing a poem every weekend. He soon realized that there were no right answers, just wellreasoned ones. These teachers taught him how to think analytically and write clearly, and that is why he has chosen to give to Holderness since graduation. In fact, he is now in his seventh decade of support! Dwight has chosen to support Holderness through the creation of a Charitable Remainder Unitrust, and in return the school is proud to recognize him as a member of the Balch Society. He chose a CRUT as a vehicle for his contributions to Holderness because most of his assets are invested in a single corporation. The stock in this corporation has appreciated significantly over the
Dwight Mason ’57
years, but its yield in dividend income in percentage terms is low. The position has an extremely low basis, but by giving Holderness stock in this corporation via a CRUT, he is able to diversify without adverse tax consequences, to increase the income yield several times over, gain a tax benefit each time he adds to the CRUT, and have Holderness ultimately receive the principal. Dwight ref lects on how much the school has changed since he made his first gift back in 1958. The entire notion of guidance and counseling was absent. Now the school has a better library and students have access to research resources that did not exist. He remembers arriving for his interview and encountering a man wearing beaten up work clothes raking leaves. This proved to be Mr. Wiles, the Senior Master, who was going to interview him! The facilities have also improved. He remembers the radiators in Marshall House being so hot that they could heat cans of soup on them! Holderness expresses its deep appreciation to Dwight for his many years of support, ensuring that the school continues to grow and excel, preparing current and future generations of students for service to their community. n

GIVING BACK TO OUT BACK
T
his year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Out Back. Ask any graduate from the past five decades about their most lasting memories from their student days, and OB is often in the top three. For some, it launched or confirmed a love for the outdoors that continues to this day. For others, it was a powerful learning experience but something they never, ever wanted to endure again. Fred Harbison ’89, aka Harbo, definitely falls into the first camp, and this March he returned for his 26th Out Back. You might think that someone who has volunteered for this program year after year, using vacation time and paying his own way from Alaska to New Hampshire to do so, would have grown up on skis and snow shoes, but that is not the case. Harbo’s journey to Holderness actually began in Bogota, Colombia, where he was born while his father was working for the Ford Foundation. His parents met in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica, and from the age of 2 to 10, Harbo and his family lived in Africa, first in Lagos, Nigeria and later Abidjan, Ivory Coast. With both parents working, he had

ample opportunity to roam the jungle behind their house, and he recalls that from a very early age, he spent a lot of time “free and on the loose.” After his family moved to Bethesda, Maryland, and his sister Jennifer enrolled at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, his parents’ tiny backyard and their increasing level of attention could not satisfy his continued need to roam, so he began investigating independent schools. He found Holderness through his cousin, Ian Barnett ’90, an alpine skier, and Harbo was intrigued by the school’s outdoor offerings. He thanks (or blames depending on your perspective) then-Director of Admission Peter Barnum for taking a chance on him. At Holderness Harbo played soccer, basketball, and tennis but was always drawn to the woods. Mike Henriques ’76, Director of OB at the time and affectionately known as “Rique Mystique,” took groups of students hiking or paddling almost every weekend. Harbo often chose these excursions over homework, which explains why he also spent considerable time in mandatory study hall. He gravitated toward activities that offered autonomy, and the outdoors provided him with the freedom that he was looking for. He recalls one of his first jobs on campus, morning breakfast prep, arriving at 5:30 am to toast and butter loaves of white and wheat bread. After being given his assignment, he was left alone to complete the task. He took pride knowing that the whole school needed his small contribution and that adults trusted him to do his job without supervision. After graduating from Holderness, Harbo attended Paul Smiths College in the Adirondacks where he excelled due to the practical and hands-on nature of most courses. He studied Ecology and Environmental Technology, then a two-year program, before transferring to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks for their Biology program. In reality, he wanted to move to Alaska for climbing and adventure, and school was the conduit for parental financial support.
2018–2019 Report of Appreciation
He volunteered at the Ester (AK) Fire Department while working seasonally as a wildland firefighter for the State of Alaska and later landed a full-time job with the Fairbanks Fire Department, where he spent 20 years as a Firefighter/Paramedic, retiring in March 2017. He is now an Alaska Big Game Guide, working with his good friend Henry “Te” Tiffany ’89.
Harbo feels that he has an advantage of working with these students; he has no preconceived notions and can call them out when they are not pulling their weight. He tells them, “Pick one thing that’s yours. Excel at that, and we will help you.” These are the students that often get the most out of the experience and those that reach out to him after the trip to say thank you.
He has two daughters—Nina, 18, and Skye, 16. Both have been to OB base camp, and that exposure sparked their interest in independent schools. They are currently at Thacher School in Ojai, California.
Many alumni remember Harbo for the colorful outfits that he wears in the woods. They are an expression of his dislike for conformity (he did not enjoy the dress code required of students at the time), but his “Super Harbo” suit, red wool pants, colorful spandex leggings, and wool kilt are all functional and fun. They put the students at ease. He says, “I am trying to show them that being themselves, truly themselves, and not what others want them to be, is cool.”
Looking back at his first OB junior year, he remembers bushwhacking with faculty leaders Peter Hendel and Gail Stevens and how Peter was clad in wool from head to toe. This was the beginning of his life-long love affair with that fabric. He returned the following year as a senior leader paired with Kate Knopp and Jeff Nielson and then led four groups with Paul “Elk” Elkins. Harbo admits to being intimidated by Elk as a student, but OB became the basis of a life-long friendship. In fact, Elk traveled to Alaska to visit Harbo this past summer. OB is a true community effort, including faculty like Duane Ford ’74 and Doug Kendall who just ventured into the woods for their 27th and 36th years respectively; staff like Kerry O’Connell who retired in 2018 after 35 years at Holderness and volunteered his time to cook at base camp; and alumni and parents like JIm Connor ’74, Colby Coombs ’85, Sumner Ford ’09, Jim Hammond P ’79 GP ’14, Celeste Holland ’14, Meredith Peck ’09, and Emilie Lee ’99. who offer their knowledge and skills. Harbo is quick to point out that these volunteers are “truly amazing educators in their own right, and I learn so much from them every year.” When asked why he returns every year, Harbo says, first and foremost, “I absolutely love seeing students away from school, away from schedules, and away from their ‘comfort zone’. I love coaching them through the transition of taking care of themselves to taking care of their group.” He particularly enjoys working with students who might be considered “flight risks,” those who are in danger of not completing the program or who look for a reason why they cannot participate.
Looking ahead to the next 50 years of OB, Harbo hopes that the program will continue to emphasize the basic skills and daily tasks that are needed not just to survive in the outdoors but to enjoy the experience— how to stay clean, warm, and dry, how to use the elements to set up camp, how to cook a meal in a #10 can. Each director has done a good job adapting and evolving, and while GPS and satellite phones offer an extra layer of safety and comfort that did not exist a generation ago, he believes it is still important to help students learn to think on their feet, to work with others to solve problems, and to be self-reliant without being dependent on technology. They can be both safe and adventurous at the same time. We are extremely grateful to Harbo for the countless hours that he has given to Holderness students and the Out Back program. His is just one example of the many ways that alumni, parents, and friends give back, and he invites others to get involved and support the school in ways that are meaningful to them. This might include hosting an event, mentoring a student pursuing a Senior Thesis experience, assisting with Special Programs, fundraising and admissions work, or speaking on campus. Volunteers who share their knowledge and expertise with alumni, parents, faculty, and students ensure that the Holderness community remains vibrant year after year. n

MANCHING LEE & ANDREW QIAN Give Major Boost to Math and Science
A
s the steel framing of the new academic building rises between Livermore Hall and Alfond Library, Holderness is pleased to recognize one of the families that played a key role in its construction. Not only is their generosity setting us on a path to innovative, collaborative, and flexible teaching and learning spaces, they are also helping inspire a new culture of philanthropy in their home nation. Mr. Xuefeng Qian, also known as Andrew, and his wife Ms. Manching Lee, live in Shanghai, China, with their children Douglas and Kelly ’19. Andrew serves as the chairman of New Access Capital, which he founded in 2003. Prior to founding New Access Capital, he served as a vice president at Softbank China Venture Capital and worked as a corporate attorney in New York and Hong Kong where he participated in the IPOs of China Southern Airlines and China National Offshore Oil Company. Manching is the Managing Director of Citiland Real Estate Corp., Greenspa Consulting, Dwarika

Commerce and Trading, and the socially conscious tea company, Gurung Tea Shanghai. Andrew and Manching met while attending Yale University. While Andrew and Manching traveled abroad to pursue higher education, they originally wanted Kelly to attend high school in Shanghai to be close to home. However, after her older brother Douglas chose to attend Choate Rosemary Hall, Kelly wanted to follow in her brother’s footsteps and become more independent through a high school experience in a different and more challenging environment. The family first heard about Holderness through past Trustee Bill Baskin ’81 whose son Alex attended Choate with Douglas. Bill referred the family to longtime Holderness Director of Admission Peter Barnum, and they soon realized that the school’s academics, size, and friendly atmosphere would be a good fit for Kelly. Looking back at Kelly’s experience, Manching feels her daughter benefited most from the school’s emphasis on character, integrity, independence, and persistence. Holderness also provided an environment where Kelly could pursue her passion for ice hockey, helping her earn a place on the U-18 Chinese Taipei National Team. She led the team with three goals as they took home the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s Challenge Cup in Malaysia. Kelly was named MVP in their final game against Singapore. She is currently in her first year at Seattle University, majoring in marketing. Based on Kelly’s experience and the great friendships that she made at Holderness, Andrew and Manching chose to support the Elevating Academics Campaign with a gift in memory of Andrew’s father, Jingdong

Qian (1935–2017). Once the new math and science building is complete, Holderness will work with Andrew and Manching to name a dedicated space in the building after the elder Mr. Qian. Although he never attended college or even finished his primary school education, Mr. Qian was an avid learner and strongly encouraged his two sons to pursue higher education. Andrew received a Juris Doctor degree from Yale, and Kelly’s uncle Jeff received an MBA from Vanderbilt University and did postdoctoral research at Columbia University. Mr. Qian also strongly supported Douglas and Kelly in their desire to study in the United States. Manching says, “We feel fortunate to have sent Kelly to attend Holderness. We feel equally fortunate to have had the entire Holderness community taking good care of Kelly, including the Head of School, the faculty, and the student community. We also feel that under this strong leadership, more kids can benefit from the type of education that Kelly received at Holderness. Thus, we would like to support the school in whatever ways we can.” In addition to their generous financial commitment to the campaign, they hosted Head of School Phil Peck, faculty, and staff during their trip to China last November. We are grateful for their help as we seek and develop stronger ties in Asia. Manching adds, “We strongly believe that education, particularly fine education with excellent educators, can really change young people’s lives. Through this modest gift to Holderness, we hope to play a small, exemplary role in a fast-changing world where Chinese families and their children are not only the beneficiaries of fine American education but also contributors to creating these educational opportunities.” While there is not a strong history of educational philanthropy in China, that is beginning to change thanks to people like Andrew and Manching. As the country continues to become a global power, more Chinese parents are sending their children to study in the United States. Andrew and Manching encourage their peers to not only send their children to schools like Holderness but also consider donations

to such schools and colleges to enable more kids to have such meaningful educational opportunities. Holderness School expresses its deep appreciation to Andrew and Manching for their support and the example that they have set for other Holderness families. Their commitment to the future of Holderness academics with a gift honoring a cherished loved one and advocate for education is inspiring to us all. n

ELEVATING ACADEMICS
REACHES NEW HEIGHTS H
olderness School charted a bold course for our teaching and learning program when we publicly launched the Elevating Academics Capital Campaign in 2018. After two and a half years of strategic planning and fundraising, we achieved our goal of raising over $27.2 million! This would not have been possible without the support of the larger Holderness community, and for that we say thank you! The initial fundraising goal was $25 million, but thanks to a matching gift from an anonymous donor that challenged other donors, the goal stretched to $27.2 million. Head of School Phil Peck joyfully states, “It is unbelievable how many individuals reached out and gave of themselves to support teaching and learning at Holderness.” Past Board Chair Robert Hall P ’13 ’16 adds, “The campaign had many donors who came through in amazing ways. The momentum started with a very generous bequest, continued with the largest gift the school had ever received, and was accelerated with a phenomenal yet anonymous matching challenge that generated excitement in our community and helped us cross the finish line.”
8
One of the lead donors and current member of Holderness’ board of trustees Andrew Davis P ’18 commented, “I’ve had first-hand exposure to the kind of school that Holderness is and how it impacts students. I care deeply for Holderness and believe the new academic building and renovations to the existing academic campus landscape will have a significant impact on the school. This new building will help to amplify the academic programs that already exist and make room for new programs to develop...The educational programming is already there and now there will be a place for it to reside.” “The school is immensely grateful to Andrew, our anonymous donor family, and the many other wonderful donors who believe in Holderness and who exemplify our core value of service beyond self,” relates Phil Peck. “Their combined generosity has enabled us to enter a new era for innovative, collaborative, and flexible learning spaces AND such generosity has allowed us to reach our goals much faster than we believed possible!” The campus community gathered in May 2019 for a special groundbreaking assembly to mark this

momentous occasion. The entire school gathered inside Hagerman where School President Dylan DeVries ’19 and STEMinist (science, technology, engineering, and math) Carolyn Fernandes ’20 offered remarks in honor of the occasion. Then a group of trustees, administrators, and students went outside with shovels and hard hats to formally break ground on the new academic building. Phil Peck reflects, “What started years ago as a need for more lab space became a teaching and learning journey. Thanks to the evolution of a dream, to the evolution of what learning at Holderness looks like, we stand ready to embark upon a new chapter in the history of Holderness School. This willingness to explore possibility was matched by an uncommon generosity. We are most fortunate to have stewards for Holderness’ future who believe in this small and mighty school and extended their belief into historical gifts. At no time in Holderness history have we been more humbled by the goodwill and motivating generosity of our donors. So thank you—thank you to our dreamers and planners who asked bigger questions. And thank you to our donors who believe in those dreams!” n

THE VALUE OF PHILANTHROPY A Conversation with Longtime Trustee Tom Phillips ’75 P 11 ’14
T
om Phillips ’75 has enjoyed a nearly 50year relationship with Holderness. He first stepped on campus as a middle-school youngster from Bedford, New York. He saw five or six other schools, mostly in the Lakes Region, and when he visited the Holderness campus, he knew Holderness was the school for him.
He is firm in relating that he didn’t try to inf luence his two sons (Cole ’11 and Garrett ’14) to come to Holderness. “I went to the occasional alumni event when the kids were growing up, but I didn’t want them to choose a predetermined place; I wanted them to choose what was right for them.” Tom adds that his older son, Cole, as a 9 th-grader, “enjoyed skiing at Killington and looked at a bunch of other schools before he saw Holderness. When Cole came to Holderness to visit, he knew it was the right school for him.” Garrett almost had no choice once the family committed to Holderness but that worked out well for him, as well. Tom served as a Trustee for nine years but waited until his sons were no longer students before he agreed to be on the Board. Head of School Phil Peck fondly considers Tom’s service. “We were fortunate to have Tom’s guidance and good work on the Board. He is well-grounded on what makes Holderness the place that it is and he epitomizes
service beyond self. Tom was a guiding light on our advancement committee during a pivotal time in the school’s history. He was the steady hand helping Holderness raise our philanthropic profile.” Tom doesn’t want kudos or recognition. He is quick and firm in stating that the school under Phil’s leadership and Board chairs such as Bob Hall P ’13 ’16, Jim Hamblin ’77 P ’08 ’15, and Will Prickett ’81 P ’15 deserve the credit for the school being where it is today. Tom was philosophical about the end of his third term as trustee: “You need fresh voices and perspectives on a Board. Everyone has an idea of how to help organizations and you need to have those changing ideas to invigorate thinking.” He adds, “Serving on the board was a pleasure. No one is trying to change Holderness for the sake of change: there is a natural push/pull in every organization, but at Holderness, there is a voice that wants us to be true to our roots—community and self-reliance.” Tom adds that the new academic building, scheduled to be completed during the winter of 2021, and the school’s mission are intertwined. “We don’t want to limit ourselves by restrictive spaces. We may not know who that kid is who will find their way to Holderness. There is a certain randomness to who will find value and learning from the job program, Out Back, or this kind of education but we want to be ready for them, to give time, effort, and to wave the f lag. We want to be sure we are providing firm ground for kids to thrive.” Tom takes the long view as he thinks about the state of the school’s philanthropy. “The success of the Holderness Fund led us to believe that we can do things on a bigger scale. It is not just big gifts but also individuals who contribute $18.79 on Day of Giving. Each effort, in Holderness fashion, makes the difference.” n

HOLDERNESS HONORS TRACY MCCOY GILLETTE ’89 P ’19 ’22 Distinguished Service Award Renamed for Powerhouse Alumna
W
hen Tracy McCoy Gillette first came to Holderness in 1986 as a rising sophomore, she had visited a number of schools. However, once she spent time on the Holderness campus, she knew immediately that it was home. A graduate of the great Class of 1989, she has served as a dedicated reunion volunteer, Admissions volunteer, class agent, class correspondent, and president of the Holderness School Alumni Association. She now serves as a member of the Board of Trustees and is also a proud Holderness parent to Lily ’19 and Wells ’22. Tracy has answered every call to serve Holderness and is an exceptional leader and a true friend. In honor of Tracy and her exemplary service to the school, this past June during Reunion Weekend, Holderness announced that it was renaming the Distinguished Service Award in her honor. The award, presented annually to an alumnus/a in a reunion class, who through his or her devotion and dedicated service has significantly and positively affected the health and well-being of the school, will now be known as the Tracy McCoy Gillette ’89 Distinguished Service Award. Tracy previously won the award in 2004.
Additionally, her friends and family created The Tracy McCoy Gillette Glitter Fund which helps support financial aid for deserving students who embody Tracy’s energy and enthusiasm for life. Board Chair Nell Reynolds P ’18 ’20 ’22 remarks, “Tracy is a true Holderness advocate, and her dedication to the school is apparent to everyone who knows her. Holderness is her passion. She loves being a board member and doing all she can to support the school.” It is only fitting that an award recognizing a graduate’s impact on the Holderness community should bear her name. n

Holderness School
AN INTELLECTUAL LIFE
A Conversation With Trustee Sander Van Otterloo ’94
H
olderness is fortunate to have a board of trustees who not only care about the school but who also offer professional expertise. Sander Van Otterloo ’94 is currently the director of secondary school counseling and an English teacher at Shore Country Day School in Massachusetts. He also serves as the chair of the Intellectual Life Committee on the Holderness Board of Trustees. Here, Sander shares some thoughts about Holderness and the board’s vision for the new academic building.
Tell us about how you became involved with Holderness School. What attracted you to Holderness initially?
What impresses you the most about the school and its approach to education? How is Holderness different from other schools?
I made my first connection with Holderness through the Spiess family. John Spiess ’94 was my best friend and classmate at Shore Country Day School. We were pretty inseparable. John’s older brothers (Ben ’89 and Jamie ’87) attended Holderness, and we’d pick them up at Holderness with the Spiess family on the way up to their house in Piermont, New Hampshire. Though I applied to other boarding schools much closer to home, Holderness was the only place I knew I’d be happy. Holderness families have a way of staying connected, and now I’ve had the great pleasure of serving on the Board of Trustees with John’s dad Gary, and my parents have also spent time on the Board, even venturing out into the woods during Out Back.
The Holderness approach is extremely personal. Class sizes are small, teachers care, and the same teacher that pushed you to be your best in class might be the one rooting for you from the sidelines in your soccer game. There is a “we-ness” in the Holderness approach that is different from other schools. Teachers are demanding, but they are also in your corner. I would also say that Holderness teachers are open-minded, eager for professional development and collaboration, and nimble in their approach to teaching. In other words, they have a growth mindset and see themselves as learners, too.
12
2018–2019 Report of Appreciation
How have you seen the school evolve over the past few years? Holderness has always understood that teaching the whole person is critical. Holderness is cognizant that a student’s academic life is connected to their athletic life, to their spiritual life, to their dorm life, etc…Holderness continues to strive to build on its exceptional reputation for teaching the whole person. For instance, Holderness is purposeful about teaching leadership. Holderness advisors give advisees feedback on how they are perceived by others in the community and help them set goals. Holderness athletes are recording data to see how they improve over time and to learn how they best function. Finally, just as Holderness (and many other schools) have a campus master plan that helps guide decisions about resource management and how to build for the future, Holderness has been putting a Learning Master Plan in place that helps teachers consider how they interact with one another, how they teach both now and how they will teach in the future. It establishes best practices and implements pedagogies that are proven to help the 21st-century learner. How was the Board, specifically the Intellectual Life Committee, involved in the planning of the new academic building? There was an incredible amount of communication about how the new building should serve the teachers
“THERE IS A ‘WE-NESS’ IN THE HOLDERNESS APPROACH THAT IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SCHOOLS. TEACHERS ARE DEMANDING, BUT THEY ARE ALSO IN YOUR CORNER.” and learners on campus. Rob Kinsley ’88 (trustee and architect) and his team spent countless hours talking to teachers and students about ideal learning spaces. From the start, the conversations between the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Intellectual Life Committee, the faculty, and the student body all drove the design. Holderness is already using furniture prototypes to make sure we fill the building with furniture that promotes learning. This is one of many examples of the ways Rob and his team made sure that every design decision is tied to learning. n

LIVERMORE LEADERSHIP SOCIETY
H
olderness would not be the remarkable school that it is today without the philanthropic foresight of you—our loyal alumni, families, and friends. Holderness School appreciates the support of each and every donor, and we are particularly humbled by those donors who make transformative gifts year after year at a leadership level. To show our appreciation for our leadership donors and the impact that they have on the Holderness
community, we are launching the Livermore Leadership Society, recognizing donors who contribute $1,000 or more ($250 or more for recent graduates) to Holderness School each fiscal year. We rely on these generous gifts to help elevate our school, and we thank our donors for their visionary support. The Livermore Leadership Society is comprised of seven levels recognizing significant individuals and moments in the school’s history:
Livermore $100,000+ Livermore Mansion and the surrounding land was the first “home” of Holderness, donated by Mrs. Balch, honoring her late husband, the Rev. Lewis P. W. Balch Jr., who always wanted to start a religious educational institution.
Niles $50,000–$99,999
Webster $25,000–$49,999
Carpenter $10,000–$24,999
William Woodruff Niles was the second Bishop of New Hampshire, President of the Board of Trustees, and founder of the school.
Headmaster Rev. Lorin Webster was a scholar, musician, and lover of athletics, which flourished during his tenure. Webster’s daughter, Lorraine, was the first female student to attend classes.
The school’s first gymnasium and now home to the arts is named for an original trustee, Josiah Carpenter, and was made possible through the generosity of his widow, Georgia Butters Drake Carpenter.
Weld $5,000–$9,999
Hagerman $2,500–$4,999
Rev. Edric Amory Weld oversaw the construction of Livermore Hall and several dormitories. During his tenure, the school adopted its four leadership criteria which are still used today - dependability, initiative, fairness, and leadership (now empathy) - and women were welcomed as formal faculty.
Donald Clark Hagerman was headmaster for 26 years and grew the school from 67 to 226 students, while maintaining its warmth and character. Out Back began, and the first Day Girls were accepted.
Woodward $1,000–$2,499 */ ** Rev. Brinton W. Woodward was headmaster for 24 years. He was an athlete, scholar, and chaplain and is remembered best for his “years of enlightened, compassionate, moral leadership.” He oversaw the transition to coeducation, reaffirmed twice weekly Chapel, and the school launched the first annual alumni weekend, Artward Bound, and what would become Senior Thesis. Two large fundraising campaigns were completed, and the Outdoor Chapel, Hagerman, Gallop, Connell, Alfond Library, and Alfond Arena were added to campus. *Young alumni through their 5th Reunion $250+ | ** Young alumni through their 10th Reunion $500

2018–2019 Report of Appreciation
Beyond contributions of cash, there are many ways you can structure your gift to Holderness that help the school and address your personal and financial goals.
THE BALCH SOCIETY HONORS individuals and families who support Holderness School through a planned gift, such as a retirement account, charitable remainder trust, or gift annuity. Life income plans like the charitable remainder unitrust that Dwight Mason ’57 created provide educational opportunities for future generations of students while you (and your spouse) receive lifetime income (in many cases, increased income) now. Making a planned gift earns donors membership in the Balch Society, named for the family that donated Livermore Mansion and the surrounding land that became the first home of Holderness School. For more information on the mutual benefits of supporting Holderness and your family through life income gifts and bequests, please visit www.holderness.planmygift.org or contact Senior Associate Director of Major Gifts Peter Barnum at (603) 779-5221 or pbarnum@holderness.org.
