DEAR FRIENDS of Holderness

When you think about Holderness, I hope and trust that the first things that come to mind are the remarkable people and programs that make Holderness more than just a school. This report is a chance for us to share some insights into many of those people as well as highlight dynamic developments in our programming. Of course, this report also gives us a chance to express our deep appreciation to all of you for making the Holderness experience possible. You will read about the Elevating Academics Campaign, which will result in a new academic building and comprehensive renovations to Schoolhouse and Hagerman. The building and renovations will be significant, but what will make them significant is not the physical appearance, but how the newly designed spaces will support teaching and learning that is innovative, collaborative, and f lexible. Leaders from both the classroom and the boardroom established a vision, and these new spaces will allow us to achieve that vision. All of it would not be possible without the support of many people devoted to Holderness. Currently, we have $870,000 left to raise to transform the academic spaces on campus. I have been humbled by the generosity of so many members of the Holderness family. I know you will enjoy reading some of their stories and why these folks continue to believe in the Holderness experience. While this campaign is exciting, equally exciting is all the work that volunteers are doing to engage our community. Whether it is this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day of Giving, countless Holderness family events around the country, Parents Association events on campus, or this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reunion, their help is invaluable. Selfishly, I love all these events because I learn, grow, and have fun when we are working and playing together. Each article in this report has a different focus, but the one thing that

runs through all of them is giving opportunity. The new building is giving us an opportunity to reconsider what the academic experience can look like; the China trip gives students the opportunity to learn lessons that are only possible through immersion in another culture; and alumni and parent volunteers give back to make sure current and future students have the opportunity to enjoy the same experiences that they (or their children) have had in the past. We frequently say that Holderness is an other-centered community, a community that develops servant leadership. In my 18th year as head of school, I continue to be humbled and inspired by the generous nature of the Holderness family. Holderness is infused with a culture of giving back that continues to grow stronger. In the end, I hope this report stresses that Holderness is a lifestyle, and I thank all of you for making this experience a wonderful life-long journey for all of us. n With my deep appreciation,

ARCHITECTURAL PLANS Translating Teaching & Learning Principles

ob Hall P ’13 ’16 joined the Holderness Board of Trustees in 2011 and has served as its chair since 2016. While sons Stepper ’13 and Henry ’16 originally came to Holderness to pursue ski racing, Bob and his wife Joanie quickly recognized that there was so much more to the school; they realized the school’s real strength comes from its commitment to community. “We could feel it walking around campus,” he remembers. “We could feel it in our boys’ interactions.” That feeling grew as Bob interacted with numerous students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff, first through his role as a board member and later as the chair. He saw and heard how the school’s commitment to the outdoors, the Job Program, sitdown dinners, and other time-honored traditions have built and strengthened the foundation of the Holderness community over many generations. These experiences led him to believe that, in some ways, nothing has changed over the years, not with the students (they still look you in the eye—a good thing) or with the facilities (science is taught in the same labs in which it was taught 30 years ago—not such a good thing).

That is why Bob, the Holderness Board of Trustees, and the school’s leadership set in motion the Elevating Academics Campaign, recognizing that the dedicated faculty who have been agents of change in the classroom deserve the physical structures that match their passion for teaching and mentoring. After the successes of building Woodward and Pichette Dormitories and replacing the hockey rink—showing our commitment to community and athletics—he says it is now time to address another strength—academics. Bob, Head of School Phil Peck, and the Advancement Office have spoken with a number of alumni and parents, past and present, about the impact a new academic building, the addition of an academic quad, and the renovations to Schoolhouse and Hagerman will have on teaching and learning. Bob recounts how so many have responded to this vision with extraordinary gifts. “It’s been so gratifying,” says Bob. The confidence of these early supporters has helped inspire other members of the Holderness family to make stretch gifts, including three exceedingly generous matching gifts—one from past trustee Wendy Kistler and her husband Phil P ’85 for renovating Hagerman, one from an anonymous

foundation to create the academic quad, and one from an anonymous family who will match every dollar raised up to $2.5 million and then will contribute $1.60 for every dollar raised up to an additional $2.5 million. Their generosity is truly humbling. Bob continues to be deeply impressed with how “mission centered Holderness is” and how that is ref lected in the board. Holderness is incredibly fortunate to have an engaged and forwardthinking group of trustees, including many alumni and parents. It is made up of professionals from a number of industries—education, healthcare, finance, athletics, and law—and includes the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire. Not only has there been 100% participation for the campaign from this group, but also many trustees have given their biggest contributions ever. In addition to their financial support, they have also taken an active role planning the campaign every step of the way. Leading that effort has been trustee Rob Kinsley ’88 P ’19, who holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, and is the chairman at Warehaus, an interdisciplinary design firm in York, PA. Rob specializes in campus planning and has made countless trips to Holderness in recent years, interviewing students, alumni, faculty, and staff and asking them about their favorite places— and their least favorite places—on campus to get a f lavor for what will most benefit the school. Trustee Sander van Otterloo ’94, who is the chair of the Intellectual Life Committee and a member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, says, “Rob Kinsley and his team have spent countless hours talking to teachers and students about ideal learning spaces...From the start, the conversations with the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Intellectual Life Committee, the faculty, and the student body have all driven the design. Holderness is already using furniture prototypes to make sure we fill the building with furniture that promotes learning.”

a building is not what a typical teacher does, so the designers had to translate teaching and learning into space, which takes considerable thoughtfulness.” Science teacher Randy Houseman, who is currently away on a chair year, adds, “We are looking at the school in new ways and sometimes more holistically. We have lots of time and space issues at Holderness. By removing some of the pressure on both elements, we will free up learners and teachers to be more hands-on and minds-on in very deliberate ways.” Ref lecting on the experience so far, Bob is perhaps most excited about how the campaign has come together. It has been a true community-wide effort— sparked by trustees, faculty and staff, alumni, and parents—all working in unison for the benefit of current and future generations of Holderness students. The Holderness community is grateful to the board for embracing this ambitious project, to the incredible faculty for putting in hours of collaboration on top of their regular teaching, coaching, and advising responsibilities, and to Bob and Joanie Hall for their wonderful generosity and for Bob’s leadership as chair. The Elevating Academics Campaign does more than just add physical space and upgrade our technology; it is about our academic vision, fostering relationships between students and faculty, and creating an environment where intellectual and personal growth is limitless. n

A MATCHING GIFT TO INSPIRE OTHERS: Supporting the Hagerman Center Renovations

endy Witter Kistler P ’85 has dedicated her life to serving educational and nonprofit organizations. In addition to being a Holderness School trustee from 1983 to 1993 and co-chairing “A Campaign for the ’80s,” Wendy has served as a member of the board at the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School, the Fenn School, and the Carroll School. In 1985, she chaired the CASE/NAIS Conference for Independent Schools. She has also been a volunteer leader at Smith College and Harvard University and is a member of the Council for the Arts at MIT. A long time trustee of the Boston Museum of Science, she also serves Massachusetts General Hospital as a member of the Ladies Visiting Committee. Wendy and her husband Phil—a Harvard Professor of Neurology and Director Emeritus of the Stroke Service at Massachusetts General Hospital—have two sons: Philip “Flip” Kistler ’85 of Dallas, TX, and David Kistler of Tiburon, CA. “We chose Holderness because of the school’s values: the Chapel and Job programs, family style dinners, dedicated faculty within a supportive learning environment, the challenging experience of Out Back, and the embracing of community,” says Wendy. “We could not be more pleased that the board Wendy and Phil Kistler P ’85

and the school’s leadership have maintained these essential core values which make Holderness special.” The family has a long history of supporting Holderness; they established the Philip Corder Witter Kistler ’85 Scholarship Fund, in honor of Flip’s graduation, as well as the Kistler Summer Sabbatical Endowed Fund, which provides travel grants for Holderness faculty to pursue interests outside the framework of formal academic study. In the past few years, visual arts teacher Franz Nicolay went to Santa Fe, NM, to participate in a workshop focusing on an introduction to archaeological practices and the ancient Anasazi culture; English teachers John and Marilee Lin explored Norway; and biology teacher Pat Casey took part in a six-day mountain bike race in the Savoie Region of France. Wendy and Phil’s commitment to Holderness continues with their offer of a generous matching gift to inspire others to support the Hagerman Center renovation, a part of the Elevating Academics Campaign. As two of the initial supporters of the original construction of Hagerman, Wendy and Phil want to make sure that the building continues to serve the needs of the school community long into the future. With the addition of a green room, costume storage, and set fabrication workroom, the impact on the theater program will be huge. The Hagerman renovations will also feature increased faculty planning and breakout spaces, a makerspace, a digital lab, and a dedicated Senior Thesis classroom. “It gives us great joy to support the campaign and the school that has meant so much to our family over the last 35 years,” says Wendy. In grateful appreciation of their largesse, Holderness will name the auditorium in Hagerman “The Kistler Family Auditorium” in their honor. With their help, Holderness is turning blueprints into reality. n

PUTTING ACADEMICS ON EQUAL GROUND: One Donor’s Perspective

hrough his relationship with the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund, trustee Andrew A. Davis P ’18 has directed a major gift toward the construction of the new academic building on the Holderness campus. This generous gift will help transform the school’s academic spaces and keep pace with its evolving pedagogy. Andrew is president of Davis Selected Advisers and serves as an investment manager overseeing specific mutual funds as well as numerous private and institutional accounts. He has served on the boards of schools from primary to university level as well as on the investment committees of Colby College (his alma mater) and Friends of Acadia, an environmental organization in Maine. He is the founder of the Davis New Mexico Scholarship, the largest private scholarship fund in the state of New Mexico, and is a member of the Special Projects Committee of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center as well as the Foundation Board of Trustees of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association. He sees Holderness as a place with “remarkable insight and patience” and remarks, “I see a school that helps students find their best selves; that’s the Holderness wheelhouse—drawing out individuals and showing them the best they can be. When parents leave their children on day one preparing to head off on O-Hike, they know their children will be known and tended. In equal measure, students are encouraged toward independence. The experiential programs such as Senior Thesis, Out Back, and the spiritual aspects of Holderness all help develop this independence leading to personal growth.” Despite his appreciation for the school, however, Andrew believes that it exists under the shadow of its athletic prowess and that the story about its robust

academic life needs a volume adjustment. “I see real expertise and a depth of ability at the programmatic level,” he says. “I see the same at the administrative and board level as well. Holderness already has a strong educational program. The new building and Elevating Academics Campaign serve as catalysts for this conversation. The educational programming is already there and now there will be a place for it to reside. I’m proud to be a part of a school that puts academics first; Holderness is ready for this next step.” Like many philanthropists, Andrew wants to see and feel the impact of giving. He believes that giving to this campaign is “a gift to the school that can vault Holderness into an enviable position that is overdue. It benefits current students, alumni, and also future students and parents. Bringing the educational assets into one area of campus is a great step for Holderness; it will be transformational.” The Holderness community is truly grateful to Andrew, not only for his generosity, but for the leadership and guidance that he provides as a member of our board. His example has led the way, inspiring others and putting academics on equal ground. n

INTENTIONAL PLANNING W

hen students have questions, most often they turn to their teachers for answers. Teachers inspire, guide, and lead students through the educational process, no matter what the topic or lesson may be. But what happens when teachers need guidance? Who inspires them and helps them find the motivation to persevere? Who teaches teachers? Veteran faculty have always mentored younger faculty at Holderness, and many faculty have sought advanced degrees and workshops outside of the school; faculty professional development is nothing new. But to intentionally lead teachers to a new level, to provide them with cutting edge research applicable to their classroom experiences, takes another level of care and commitment. In 2016, Holderness School made that commitment and hired Nicole Furlonge, PhD to be its first director of the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Established under the school’s strategic planning goal of creating and sustaining a culture of learning, Holderness School’s Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is a touchstone for teachers and students. Students entering the CTL are still surrounded by books and e-resources but also have access to academic support services. For faculty, the CTL serves as a laboratory for ongoing professional development. Thanks to contributions made to the Holderness Fund, the center has thrived and helped students learn about learning as well as build support for teachers. Generous gifts from donors have also made it possible for Holderness to organize a four-day on-campus workshop—called Holderness LEARNS—for all faculty and staff that is designed to promote collaboration, curiosity, and creativity and is centered on the art and science of teaching and learning. This spring,

faculty were treated to conversations with a number of visitors, including Grace A. Chen from Vanderbilt University, Rebecca Nyquist Baelen from the University of Pennsylvania, Kevin Mattingly, PhD from Columbia University (he is also a Holderness trustee), and Efrat Furst, PhD from Harvard University. The speakers shared their extensive knowledge on topics ranging from the experiences of AsianAmerican students in American educational institutions to mindfulness and brain science.

Faculty professional development continues to occur due to generous donations to several endowed funds including the Kistler Sabbatical Fund, the Edward E. Ford Sabbatical Fund, the Edward E. Ford Summer Study Fund, the Van Otterloo, Henderson, and Brewer Faculty Chair Program, and the Jim and Loli Hammond Faculty Appreciation Fund. Contributions to these generous funds provide faculty with time to pursue advanced degrees, attend conferences, rest, and ref lect. In the summer of 2018, history teacher Kelsey Berry became CTL’s second director when Nicole Furlonge was appointed as the director of the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University’s Teachers College. “My goal this year is to listen,” says Kelsey. “I don’t want this to be my academic program in ten years; I want it to be the Holderness program.” One theme that continues to emerge for her as she takes on this new role is the use of technology. With screens ever-present in students’ lives, when is it too much? What is Holderness School’s philosophical stance and how can we help students to be responsible and intentional digital citizens?

The plans for the new academic building are also on Kelsey’s mind as she continues to help Holderness develop its academic programs and lead important discussions about teaching and learning. “When the new academic building is complete, I think students will immediately experience teachers teaching in different ways,” says Kelsey. That’s where she thinks Holderness has it right. In the planning phase of the new building, emphasis was placed on looking into the future and considering what teaching would look like 10, 20, 30 years from now. The building is being designed to fit those needs—bigger, more f lexible classrooms, collaborative workspaces, and spacious presentation halls. As Kelsey sees it, Holderness has done its homework, not reacting to trends or fads but responding to thoughtful and proven methods of education that are based on scientific research. The Center for Teaching and Learning under the leadership of Nicole and Kelsey has both supported and challenged the faculty, asking them to be students of their craft and making time for their own learning. Fortunately, the financial resources have been available as well, providing powerful learning opportunities as well as the space in which to do it. n

TAKING A CHANCE

oseph Massik ’46 grew up in Dorchester, MA, and spent two years at public high school before attending Holderness. He described himself as a “problem child who would not amount to anything,” until Headmaster Edric Weld decided to take a chance on him. He was one of only two Jewish boys in the school at the time and admitted to feeling isolated, but not because of his faith. Instead, he felt apart from most other students because of the physical, outdoor culture of the school; Joe considered himself to be an introvert and more intellectual. However, despite that distance, he would go on to serve as class president and become one the school’s most faithful donors.

After attending Drake University, Joe worked as an assistant editor at a weekly community newspaper before writing advertising copy in Washington, DC. He then became the assistant editor and then editor of the New England edition of TV Guide Magazine. Joe later became a real estate developer and bought and renovated small apartment buildings in Boston. He went to the University Club frequently to swim and also enjoyed spending summers in a small condo near the beach on Nantucket. He once hosted a party at his home on Nantucket for the University Club’s triathlon team. Joe supported a number of organizations in the Boston area, including the Esplanade Association, the Charles River Conservancy, Vilna Shul (Boston’s Center for Jewish Culture), the Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance, the Boys & Girls Club of Boston, and the Nichols House Museum. Joe was also a loyal Holderness supporter, making his first gift in 1955 and contributing his final Holderness Fund gift just two weeks before his passing. Joe died on June 27, 2017, at the age of 89. He was unmarried at the time of his death and had no children, so he chose to leave his estate to a number of esteemed charitable institutions—of which Holderness was one—as well as several nieces and nephews. While his largest gift to Holderness during his lifetime was $500, the school will receive close to $3 million thanks to his incredible generosity and foresight.

Through his bequest, Joe realized one of Holderness School’s core values—putting the needs of others before one’s own. He also personified our belief that leadership comes in many forms, not just through words and actions, but also through humility and serving the larger community. Joe’s bequest will help fund the construction of the new academic building, which will serve generations of Holderness students, some of whom will excel, just like Joe did, if only given a chance. We cannot think of a more fitting tribute. n

DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS

Parent volunteers at the winter semester exam bake

he Holderness School Parents Association (HSPA) offers parents an opportunity to become involved in the life of the school through a variety of programs and events during the school year. We are grateful to co-chairs Kathy Cunha P ’16 ’19 and Suzy Lehner P ’21 for their leadership and all the dedicated volunteers who support our students, faculty, and Holderness families. The following is a list of all the amazing events this group has organized in the past year: ▪▪ This fall the Parents Association organized a hospitality tent during home athletic events. New parents could enjoy a variety of treats and had the opportunity to meet and ask questions of our seasoned parents while cheering on their children’s athletic teams. ▪▪ The College Care Packages Committee, chaired by Amy Robbins P ’18 ’20, assembled 85 boxes of food, vitamins, and school supplies and sent them to our newest alumni. These care packages provided a well-needed boost to students navigating their first semester of college classes and exams. ▪▪ During Fall Parents Weekend, the Parents Association raised more than $6,000 with its 50/50 Raff le and held a parent-faculty mixer. ▪▪ On Proctor Day in November, Joe and Ann Casey P ’14 ’17 ’20 led a group of parents in hosting a hospitality tent next to the Robert T.

Low Turf Field and cheered on the Bulls as they ran, kicked, and shot their way to victory. ▪▪ Elizabeth Rohdenburg P ’20 chaired the Winter Parents Weekend Raff le and Silent Auction which took place on February 1. ▪▪ Lisa Cantin P ’17 ’19 and the members of the Faculty Appreciation Committee continue their work on three “Faculty Appreciation Fridays” throughout the school year. During these days, the committee sets up a fun assortment of treats in the faculty lounge and offers chair massages, a smoothie bar, and more. It is a fun way for parents to meet teachers and show their appreciation for all the teachers do for their children. ▪▪ Exam Bake is a long-standing tradition through which the HSPA provides baked goods, an iced coffee bar, and late-night pizza to both faculty and students during December and May exams.

We are grateful to these parent volunteers and all parents who, through their support of the Holderness Fund, through planning events, and through serving as senior thesis mentors, help make Holderness a wonderful place to live and learn. Holderness in China:

OPENING DOORS E

ach year since 2015, the families of our Chinese students have sponsored a summer trip to their country for a small group of students and faculty. The group visits historic sites and museums, tries authentic cuisine, visits the Chinese families in their homes, and experiences a different culture first-hand. It is an amazing opportunity for our students and would not be possible without the generosity of these families. The Holderness contingent typically spends 12-14 days in China, and last year’s highlights included exploring the Forbidden City and the Imperial Palace in Beijing, walking along the Great Wall, making dumplings in Pingyao, viewing the Terracotta Army in Xi’an, visiting the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and posing for pictures in front of the famous Shanghai skyline.

The students and faculty also participated in a tai chi class, visited a local school, viewed ancient artifacts, attended a performance of Kung Fu, and shopped in markets for traditional Chinese souvenirs. Travelers are responsible for expenses to and from China, but many of the other costs, such as meals, hotels, and tours in-country, are generously paid for by the hosting Chinese families. In addition to the personal impact the trip has on individuals, this opportunity also has an impact on classroom experiences. History teacher Kelsey Berry, who traveled with the group in 2016, recalls Erica Ashby ’18, a student in her AP Comparative Government class, describing a conversation about the Chinese economy that she had with a classmate’s father while visiting their home in China.

These experiences turn our students into primary sources and make the classroom discussions richer and more engaging. Kelsey adds, “I was in awe of all the things that I didn’t know. I got to be a student again, and that’s a really important experience no matter your age—to have your eyes opened again to something new and interesting. And that’s the disposition we want our students to have.” All of the participants agree that it is meaningful to see the Chinese students in their homes, where they are most comfortable, and to get to know them outside of the classroom and dorm. This shared experience allows them to connect on a deeper level than would have been possible otherwise. For many, this begins during several dinners hosted by the Chinese families. The students and faculty enjoy meeting the family members and pets of our Chinese students, playing games, making food, and getting a glimpse of their life outside of Holderness. Spanish teacher and Associate Head of School Tobi Pfenninger, who traveled with the group in 2018, talked about the delightful afternoon and evening that she and several students spent at the home of Zi Yan Huang ’19. “We all enjoyed learning how to make dumplings, trying new foods including red bayberries, and talking and laughing as we savored a delicious hot pot dinner. The students made lasting memories and will never forget the hospitality of Zi Yan’s family.” Speaking about the Holderness campus and community, Avery Reynolds ’19 says, “Since we all share this place, I think it’s really important that we get to know where they’re from because they get to come to where I’m from.” Yuechen “Louis” Liu ’20 adds, “The China trip is a bridge linking Chinese and American students together.”

We want to express our deep appreciation to these families for opening their homes to our community, for sharing their history and culture with us, and for providing our students with unique lessons in confidence, perspective, and independence that can only be achieved through immersion in another culture. In addition to sponsoring the trip, many Chinese families have stepped forward to support the school directly. Last year, they contributed more than $120,000 to the Holderness Fund, and one family gave $200,000—the largest single gift ever from a Holderness family in Asia— to the Elevating Academics Campaign for the construction of the new academic building. The generosity of these families, and the Holderness community as a whole, is humbling and empowers students to lead lives distinguished by character, community, and curiosity—the core values that define who we are as a school and the impact that we can have on our world. n

o volunteer is to offer oneself, to perform a task freely, without obligation, and without consideration for receiving anything tangible in return. Jon Norton ’70 and Elise (Steiner) Hacker ’10 are just two of the more than 70 class agents who give back to Holderness. The Holderness Fund covered nine percent of the school’s overall operating expenses in 2017-18, including support for financial aid, faculty, special programs, arts, and athletics. We are grateful to these dedicated volunteers who work behind the scenes all year to secure this critical funding. How long have you been a volunteer? What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I have been a class agent for the past three and a half years. When my wife worked at the South Shore YMCA, I saw the contributions the organization made to our community. JON NORTON ’70 Despite being a lifelong resident of the area, I was surprised to learn the Y was much more than a pool and a gym. I saw first-hand the impact they made and met so many committed people willing to help. This inspired me to volunteer. Ultimately, I headed up the annual campaign and realized how difficult it can be to raise money. The staff selflessly gave so much of their time assisting me, as they believed in the mission of the Y. I was so impressed with their desire to provide financial assistance to people who couldn’t participate otherwise. This naturally led me to reflect on how fortunate I was to have the opportunity to attend Holderness

and have an education without the concerns and disruptions felt by many of the members of the YMCA. Shortly after the campaign ended, I was asked to help with the Holderness Fund. Having a new appreciation for my Holderness education, I said, “Yes.” As an alumnus, I realized I had every reason to be proud and grateful that there were so many reasons to stay engaged. In the end, it’s all about the people...as a volunteer I’ve been so fortunate to meet so many caring and giving people. Why is supporting the Holderness Fund important to you? Our support helps reduce tuition costs. Tuition covers 75% of the actual costs to educate a student. Our donations help to cover the other 25%. Giving to Holderness supports facilities and resources that enable students to excel. Believe it or not, my first year at Holderness our hockey rink had chicken wire for part of the boards. I want Holderness students to be proud of the physical plant and, through my giving, I want to help ensure repairs and improvements are made in a timely fashion.

also gives me a chance to reconnect with my classmates; I get to learn what they’re up to and what’s going on in their lives, and reminisce about our days at Holderness.

What areas of the school are you most passionate about? My passion is for the school as a whole. I have full confidence the funds are used wisely for the benefit of the entire school. I also feel that raising the bar (increasing giving) can make a big difference!

Why is supporting the Holderness Fund important to you? Supporting the Holderness Fund is so important to me because Holderness taught me so much, not just in the classroom, but outside as well, and I hope that my donations help to provide those experiences to other students.

What were some of your favorite classes, teachers, coaches, and experiences? There were so many, but I must start with Mrs. Doris Plaisted, the school nurse, who was gruff on the outside but had a heart of gold. I injured my knee during the first football game one fall and spent weeks in the infirmary. I witnessed first-hand the homesick freshmen coming in, looking for a little love, and maybe a day off from school. She knew right away what they needed, gave them some placebo pill, and sent them off. The truth is, we became best of friends and stayed in contact long after I graduated.

What areas of the school are you most passionate about? I’m passionate about it all, because Holderness wouldn’t be Holderness without the academics, athletics, financial aid, Job Program, special programs, dorms, etc. I think it’s important not only to support Holderness and keep these programs going but also to allow the school to create new memories and traditions as well.

Secondly, Major Lohnes, my history teacher and football coach, didn’t let us slack. The Saturday class before a game was just another day, and he would still give a test. It was a life lesson I will never forget.

How/why did you choose to go to Holderness?

Thirdly, Mr. Barnard, a Fulbright Exchange Teacher from London and my English teacher/ drama coach, encouraged me in class and on stage and enabled me to exceed my expectations. n

How long have you been a volunteer? Why do you volunteer, and what do you enjoy most about it?

ELISE (STEINER) HACKER ’10

I have been a volunteer for over a year now. It keeps me connected to Holderness, and I know that it’s my small way of giving back to a place that gave me so much. It

I was 16 years old, and I told my parents that I wanted to go to boarding school (which also meant that my younger sister was interested, too). Holderness was the first open house we attended; my dad, sister, and I pulled up and the former admissions director, Tyler Lewis, greeted us. He said, “Oh! Elise and Erica Steiner from Concord, New Hampshire. We are so excited you are here.” My dad was immediately impressed that Tyler knew so much about us. We looked at other schools, but nothing compared to the feeling we felt while on the Holderness campus. To this day, our family is so grateful for the experiences that my sister and I had while at Holderness. We are incredibly grateful to Jon, Elise, and our entire network of volunteers, including class agents and correspondents, senior thesis mentors, event hosts, and members of the Reunion Committee, who drive participation to the Holderness Fund, promote class unity, and provide experiential learning opportunities for students. Each one of these roles strengthens the Holderness community and speaks to our tradition of putting the needs of others before ourselves. n

PUTTING THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING The entire student body put the FUN in FUNdraising during the 2018 Day of Giving. Students participated in a change challenge, competing to see which dorms could collect the most change. The girls from Connell won the challenge. Overall, students raised a total of $284.35 for the Day of Giving— that’s a LOT of change to count! In addition, the twelfth graders raised money throughout the year for their Senior Gift—a new footbridge along Mt. Prospect Road. Through bake and hat sales, a dress down day, a parent appeal, and a generous matching gift from Chris Carney ’75 P ’08 and Karen Dempsey Carney, the twelfth graders raised $3,771.02.

2017–2018 Report of Appreciation

Joseph Massik ’46 made his first gift to Holderness in 1955. He was not a large donor during his lifetime. He did not even give every year. But Joe recognized that he could make a lasting impact on Holderness through a bequest. Joe’s legacy will live on in the new academic building and all of the teaching and learning that will take place within its walls. His vision will allow the school to build on its long tradition of experiential learning, interdisciplinary teaching, and the all-important relationships that faculty build with students during a critical time in their development.
