Non-Alcoholic Beers in South Africa

Gone are the days when there was no choice for the beer lover.! Now we even have a choice when choosing a non-alcoholic beer.!

!

I believe that world-wide this industry is driven by the middle eastern market. There is a huge market for malt beverages in countries were the consumers faith does not permit them to drink alcoholic beverages. Often the words non-alcoholic beer are substituted by malt beverage because beer has connotation with alcohol.!

!

I can think of many other obvious reasons for drinking non-alcoholic beer. Not one of them has anything to do with taste‌ That was until I tasted the new flavoured non alcoholic beers. Modern non alcoholic beers actually taste very good. So go ahead and try one.!

!

How are non-alcoholic malt beverages brewed? !

!

Most non- and low alcohol free beers are brewed with alcohol and then the alcohol is filtered out - this process cannot guarantee all the alcohol is completely filtered out. ! At the old Bavaria Brau brewery in Centurion, we brewed a beer called Bavaria Point 5. !

!

The brewing process was controlled so that only a small amount of alcohol was produced.!

Other breweries simply remove some or all of the alcohol from conventionally brewed beer.!

!

Alcohol can be removed from beer after brewing by the dialysis or reverseosmosis method.!

!

Bavaria Holland, uses a different process. Bavaria have a brewing technique where no alcohol is created during the brewing process - ensuring a 0.0% beer.   Page 2 of 8

Clausthaler ! !

If a beer with a brand name such as Clausthaler can sell outside Germany surely it must taste OK?!

!

! Clausthaler Classic non alcoholic beer and Clausthaler Lemon. !

!

Clausthaler was launched in 1979 and is Germany’s leading non alcoholic beer.!

!

Is Clausthaler completely alcohol-free? ! Like all beers in Germany, non-alcoholic brews and reduced-alcohol beers are brewed with only water, barley (malt) and hops in strict accordance with the German Beer Purity Decree of 1516. Of course, we know today that yeast is also a necessary and important ingredient, but in 1516, the importance of yeast was not yet understood. Other malt types, most importantly wheat, are now also allowed, but only for top-fermented beers (ales). ! Now, in spite of or because of, all our knowledge and all our technical proficiency, we know that a minimal quantity of alcohol must be produced to create a good tasting non-alcoholic malt beverage. The alcohol content of Clausthaler is 0.45 (or 0.30 for Clausthaler Golden Amber) % vol, which lies below the 0.5 % vol maximum alcohol content specified in the statutes as the definition of "non-alcoholic", "dealcoholized", or "alcohol-removed". In Great Britain, the term "alcohol-free" may only be used for products with not more than 0.05 % vol detectable alcohol content. (clausthaler.com)!

Faxe Free!

!

!

!

FAXE Free is a danish non-alcoholic beer brewed according to a patented method. Normally, non-alcoholic beer is produced by allowing the alcohol to evaporate. FAXE Free, however, makes use of immobilised fermentation, a process which carefully controls the formation of the characteristic beer taste without alcohol being produced inside the tank. FAXE Free has a light, golden lager colour and a firm, white head. It also has a more fresh and “non boiled taste, unlike many of the other non-alcoholic beers. (royalunibrew.com)!
