A destination unlike any other New Zealand is your chance to escape the ordinary. It truly is a breathtakingly beautiful place, where spectacular fiords wait to be explored and towering mountains cloak wide open spaces of untouched wilderness. It is a mystical place of rolling hills, boiling mud pools, ancient rainforests, picturesque lakes, myths and legends and its majestic scenery is both captivating and awe-inspiring.

Add to this the fascinating and rich Maori culture and a holiday experience unlike any other awaits you.

The Kirra Story In 1968, Jack Manning, a high school Maths & Woodwork teacher from Adelaide, organised a tour to New Zealand for his fellow teachers. The tour was so successful that Jack established a commercial tour operation based in Pasadena, a suburb in the south of Adelaide. Pasadena Travel organised and operated a range of coach tours to New Zealand with departures scheduled year round. In 1975, Pasadena Travel changed its name to Kirra Tours and Jack continued to manage the business until he retired in 1986 at the age of 58. Today, Kirra offers a comprehensive range of touring and independent travel options for both domestic and international travellers and enjoys an enviable reputation worldwide as one of New Zealand’s leading and most established travel companies. We hope you enjoy this 50th edition of our coach tour brochure as we begin celebrating Kirra’s 50th birthday in 2018.

Exciting Rail Journeys

Exciting Rail Journeys

On many of our trips, Kirra include one or several of New Zealand’s great rail journeys. Travelling by train allows you to sit back, relax in comfort and enjoy spectacular scenery you simply can't experience from the road.

TranzAlpine Train

Taieri Gorge Railway

Climb aboard one of the world’s most famous train journeys linking the city of Christchurch and the historic west coast town of Greymouth. The TranzAlpine will take you on a coast to coast rail journey through the mighty Southern Alps where spectacular views of the chiselled alpine landscape will take your breath away at every turn. Highlights include the 73 metre high Staircase viaduct, Arthur’s Pass National Park and the Otira tunnel. You will experience a total of 19 tunnels and four viaducts and the outdoor viewing carriage will get you close to the fresh alpine air and awesome scenery.

Departing from Dunedin’s historic and beautiful railway station, the Taieri Gorge Railway begins its scenic journey into some of New Zealand’s most spectacular and iconic scenery. Marvel at the variety of landscapes as the train negotiates this narrow and deep gorge carved out over aeons by the ancient Taieri River. The natural wonders combined with the challenge of man made engineering will leave you amazed, somehow the railway blends into the natural environment perfectly. It is a wonderful example of the sheer determination of early railway pioneers. If you wish, stand on the open air platforms and enjoy the entertaining and informative live commentary.

Coastal Pacific Train The Coastal Pacific train travels between Christchurch and Picton. The journey starts by crossing the Canterbury Plains, where vast braided rivers dissect a patchwork of horticultural and farming landscapes. Then travel along a thin strip of coastal land with the Kaikoura Ranges rising steeply on one side and the Pacific Ocean swells washing over a rocky coastline on the other. Seals and penguins can often be seen on the rocks as you continue your journey to the picturesque fishing village of Picton. 10 - Kirra Coach 2017/18

TranzAlpine Costal Pacific Taieri Gorge Railway Driving Creek Railway Coromandel

Picton Greymouth Christchurch

Dunedin

Driving Creek Railway At the township of Coromandel, experience New Zealand’s only narrow-gauge mountain railway along with a working pottery and wildlife sanctuary. One of New Zealand’s most popular train rides, Driving Creek Railway will take you through replanted native kauri forest, two spirals, three short tunnels and across several large viaducts as you make your way to the mountain terminus. From here you’ll enjoy great panoramic views over the island studded Hauraki Gulf with the forested valley and mountains behind.

Driving Creek Railway

Discover the magical fiords of Doubtful or Milford Sounds, explore the stunning islands of the Hauraki Gulf and sail the pristine waters of Lake Rotoiti onboard some of New Zealand's most spectacular cruises.

Milford Sound

Auckland's Hauraki Gulf

Described as the eighth Wonder of the World, Milford Sound is acclaimed as New Zealand’s most famous tourist destination. Carved out by glaciers during the ice ages, it is truly breathtaking in any weather. The fiord’s cliffs rise vertically from still, dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and dense rainforests cling to sheer rock faces. Waterfalls cascade downwards, some as high as 1000 metres and when it rains in Milford Sound, those waterfalls multiply with magnificent effect. Enjoy expert commentary while cruising the length of this spectacular fiord.

Step on board your Hauraki Blue overnight cruise and set off from Viaduct Harbour, taking in the highlights of Auckland Harbour. Explore the Hauraki Gulf islands, each with its own distinct personality and fascinating wildlife. Discover secluded beaches, paddle a kayak or snorkel in the clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. Relax on deck before enjoying fabulous cuisine matched with New Zealand’s finest beer and wine. Then let yourself be gently lulled to sleep in your private ocean view cabin. In the morning, enjoy a delicious breakfast before cruising back to port.

Doubtful Sound

Lake Rotoiti

Doubtful Sound is a remote wilderness area three times longer and ten times larger than Milford. With its rugged peaks, verdant rainforest and twisting, hidden inlets, this stunning fiord will take your breath away. Home to abundant wildlife you may see bottlenose dolphins and fur seals at play, or catch a glimpse of a rare Fiordland Crested Penguin. Cruise across Lake Manapouri, then travel by coach over Wilmot Pass to access Doubtful Sound. This isolation makes this pristine fiord a very special place, a place only those in the know get to see.

Encounter the best Lake Rotoiti has to offer aboard the luxury yacht ‘Tiua’, a stylish, luxury, 53-foot catamaran. This exclusive eco-sailing experience across the lakes serene, clear waters will allow you to discover the native bays and coves under sail before visiting Manupira Pools, Lake Rotoiti’s mineral rich, outdoor thermal hot spas accessible only by boat. Beautifully presented, ‘Tiua’ blends her original character and style with the latest comfort and class to offer a luxury cruise in the enchanting natural environment of Lake Rotoiti and Okawa Bay.

Spectacular Cruises

Spectacular Cruises

Milford Sound

On certain tours, Kirra also offer you the opportunity to experience an overnight cruise in either Milford or Doubtful Sounds. Designed along the lines of a traditional scow, these vessels blend old world charm with modern comforts that include spacious viewing decks, a dining saloon, fully licensed bar and an observation lounge. After dropping anchor in a sheltered cove, you can choose to explore the shoreline by kayak or tender boat or simply relax onboard. In the evening, enjoy a delicious three course buffet dinner prepared by the onboard chefs and served in the dining saloon. Mingle with fellow travellers, savour some fine wines and if the skies are clear in the evening, spend some time on the upper deck gazing at the stars before retiring to your cabin with private ensuite bathroom. Overnight cruises get booked out well in advance so be sure to advise Kirra at the time of booking if you would like to check availability and prices.
