Celebrating 50 Years

of Touring Excellence Kirra Coach from the 1970's

1968 The year that changed history 1968 was a year of seismic social and political change across the globe and history would prove that the world would never be the same again. It was also a year that saw many world firsts. Dr Christian Barnard performed the first successful heart transplant and Apollo 8 orbited the moon, becoming the first manned mission to achieve the feat. The first Big Mac was served at McDonalds for 49 cents and the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet made its maiden flight. The very first ATM (Automated Teller Machine) was installed in the United States and in a quiet inner southern suburb of Adelaide, Australia, Pasadena Travel, soon to be renamed Kirra Tours, was founded.

Boeing 747 September 1968

A pioneer with travel at heart Jack Manning turned his love of travel into a thriving South Australian business. Jack was a High School Maths & Woodwork teacher and in March 1968, he organised a tour to New Zealand for his fellow teachers. Its success saw him establish a commercial tour operation based at Pasadena and whilst coach tours remained the cornerstone of the business, rental cars, motorhomes, accommodation and sightseeing tours were added to the product range as the company grew. Held in the highest regard, Jack was a constant thorn in the side of bureaucracy in the New Zealand Tourism industry. He enjoyed a reputation of not mincing his words and would not allow the ‘big boys’ to dominate and be favoured at the expense of the smaller operators and always spoke out for a fair go for all. Jack’s success was due entirely to his own efforts. John (Jack) Percival Kenneth Manning

Kirra Tours today Over the last 50 years, Kirra Tours has been host to hundreds of thousands of happy travellers from all corners of the globe. The next 50 years In recent years, technology has had a significant influence the way travel is promoted and purchased. It has also had a positive impact on the performance levels of our touring vehicles, making them more environmentally and driver friendly. Yet Jack Manning’s philosophy is still very much ingrained into modern day Kirra. Jack always put the customer first, believing that if something needed to be done, it would be, even if it seemed impossible. In a world that is constantly changing, Kirra Tours will continue to enhance our guests experience to ensure that we live up to those founding values. Great Ways to Save

Great Ways to Save

Exciting Rail Journeys

Exciting Rail Journeys

On many of our trips, Kirra Tours include one or several of New Zealand’s great rail journeys. Travelling by train allows you to sit back, relax in comfort and enjoy spectacular scenery you simply can't experience from the road.

TranzAlpine

TranzAlpine Train

Coastal Pacific Train

Taieri Gorge Railway

Climb aboard one of the world’s most famous train journeys linking the city of Christchurch and the historic west coast town of Greymouth. The TranzAlpine will take you on a coast to coast rail journey through the mighty Southern Alps, where spectacular views of the chiselled alpine landscape will take your breath away at every turn. Highlights include the 73 metre high Staircase viaduct, Arthur’s Pass National Park and the Otira tunnel. You will experience a total of 19 tunnels and 4 viaducts and the outdoor viewing carriage will get you close to the fresh alpine air and awesome scenery.

The Coastal Pacific train travels along the north-east coast of the South Island linking the delightful port of Picton with the vibrant city of Christchurch. This world renowned rail journey is a literal scenic feast, with the Kaikoura mountain ranges to the east and the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline to the west. Travel through some of New Zealand’s finest farmland and horticultural regions and see amazing wildlife from the comfort of your train carriage. Seals and penguins can often be seen basking on the rocks below before crossing the idyllic Canterbury Plains to the Garden City of Christchurch.

Departing from Dunedin’s historic railway station, the Taieri Gorge Railway begins its journey into some of New Zealand’s most spectacular and iconic scenery. Marvel at the variety of landscapes as the train negotiates this narrow and deep gorge, carved out over aeons by the ancient Taieri River. The natural wonders combined with the challenge of man made engineering will leave you amazed, as somehow the railway blends into the natural environment perfectly. It is a wonderful example of the sheer determination of early railway pioneers. If you wish, stand on the open air platforms and enjoy the entertaining and informative live commentary.

14 - Kirra Coach 2018/19

Explore some of New Zealand’s magical wonders by water. Discover the powerful solitude of Doubtful Sound, the grandeur of mighty Milford Sound or sail the pristine waters of Lake Rotoiti onboard some of New Zealand's most spectacular cruises.

Milford Sound Described as the eighth Wonder of the World, Milford Sound is acclaimed as New Zealand’s most famous tourist destination. Carved out by glaciers during the ice ages, it is truly breathtaking in any weather. The fiord’s cliffs rise vertically from still, dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and dense rainforests cling to sheer rock faces. Waterfalls cascade downwards, some as high as 1000 metres and when it rains in Milford Sound, those waterfalls multiply with magnificent effect. Enjoy expert commentary while cruising the length of this spectacular fiord.

Doubtful Sound Doubtful Sound is a remote wilderness area three times longer and ten times larger than Milford. With its rugged peaks, verdant rainforest and twisting, hidden inlets, this stunning fiord will take your breath away. Home to abundant wildlife, you may see bottlenose dolphins and fur seals at play, or catch a glimpse of a rare Fiordland Crested Penguin. Cruise across Lake Manapouri, then travel by coach over Wilmot Pass to access Doubtful Sound. This isolation makes this pristine fiord a very special place, a place only those in the know get to see.

Lake Rotoiti Encounter the best Lake Rotoiti has to offer aboard the luxury yacht ‘Tiua’, a stylish, luxury, 53-foot catamaran. This exclusive eco-sailing experience across the lakes is serene. Clear waters will allow you to discover the native bays and coves under sail before visiting Manupira Pools, Lake Rotoiti’s mineral rich, outdoor thermal hot spas accessible only by boat. Beautifully presented, ‘Tiua’ blends her original character and style with the latest comfort and class to offer a luxury cruise in the enchanting natural environment of Lake Rotoiti and Okawa Bay.

Spectacular Cruises

Spectacular Cruises

Milford Sound

On certain trips, Kirra Tours also offer you the opportunity to experience an overnight cruise in either Milford or Doubtful Sounds. Designed along the lines of a traditional scow, these vessels blend old world charm with modern comforts that include spacious viewing decks, a dining saloon, fully licensed bar and an observation lounge. After dropping anchor in a sheltered cove, you can choose to explore the shoreline by kayak or tender boat or simply relax onboard. In the evening, enjoy a delicious three course buffet dinner prepared by the onboard chefs and served in the dining saloon. Mingle with fellow travellers, savour some fine wines and if the skies are clear in the evening, spend some time on the upper deck gazing at the stars before retiring to your cabin with private ensuite bathroom. Overnight cruises get booked out well in advance so be sure to advise Kirra at the time of booking if you would like to check availability and prices. www.kirratours.co.nz - 15
