Printing in a “Digital World”... Yes, print magazines are still relevant! While magazines are certainly integrating more and more digital content into their brands, it’s on the physical pages where they continue to make the greatest connection with readers, and that connection remains the most important reason for continuing to subscribe and advertise in magazines. Magazines are personal, they hold a special visual bond to our senses, emotions and energetic vibration helping readers connect with the message in a personalized, meaningful way. Print media is tangible, portable and moldable, it can be carried without the need of technology. A person can feel the texture of the paper, turn the pages of a magazine, see the brilliant colors shine on the page of a highgloss photography book. Paper can be any size, shape or color, it can enhance an idea and become a work of art.

A call for safety!
From a user’s experiential standpoint, there is still no substitute for tactical interaction with print. Magazines don’t run out of batteries, don’t require a certain viewing angle to avoid glare, don’t need annoying scrolling-down and don’t need to be synced. Although some print forms have declined, there is still a need for print in marketing and advertising. A print piece can engage a person, interact with a person in ways the web cannot. Print has the diversity of being able to stand alone or work with other media to create dynamic and effective multimedia marketing campaigns. Many studies have shown that print is still considered more credible than online material. This is because print is more permanent, it has to stand up over time, while the web is fluid, it changes, and information can be rewritten very easily or even deleted. Successful magazine experience includes the integration of new technology (websites, social media and mobile apps) to help enhance message’s impact.

Concrete proof of human holism and why Sound Healing is so effective...! You have no doubt heard the tired cliché: “she’s thinking outside the box” ... how about the one where we do our thinking outside the brain?! It’s true, recent work in the fields of Psychology and Cognitive Science shows abundant evidence that the body and the environment around us are intimately linked to our cognition. The body can think independently of the brain in a mechanism called “Embodied Cognition” (EC). The traditional view of cognition holds that all thinking and awareness goes on inside the brain. It has been taken for granted that processes responsible for abstract thinking, interpretation of the senses and subsequent decision-making are all centered somewhere inside our brains. The long accepted paradigm relies on the all-powerful brain creating and manipulating disembodied constructs of real life things. Disembodied representations are moved around the mental chessboard as the brain solves all of our problems and makes all the decisions. However, that is not how it always happens - and further, once you see the body’s important role in the holistic person, some of the wonders of Alternative Health and Wellness become easier to understand and em-

brace. The alternate way of understanding our thought processes is labeled (yuck) Embodied Cognition. Recent findings demonstrate that our bodies and the environment around us are important in our cognition and
play a vital part in our thinking and decision making processes. It’s not the disembodied representations in our brain, the back-andforth firing of countless neurons that alone produce our thoughts, but the indivisible interplay of our bodies and the ecosystems that surround and contain us - that is where thought resides. The job description for the brain has changed; instead of having to represent information about the external
world and use that knowledge to output commands, the brain is now a part of a broader system that encompasses perception and action as well. The role of the body has been promoted - significantly. EC researchers Dr. Sabrina Golonka and Leeds UK colleague Andrew Wilson “advocate an ecosystem-like approach that treats even the most sophisticated cognitive tasks as a product of how our brains and bodies have evolved with our environments.” The brain does not generate our behavior in a vacuum. Instead, human actions result from the real-time interplay and cooperation of brain, body, nervous system and the surrounding environment. How so? Have you ever knocked an object off your kitchen counter and instantly reacted - moving your hand, to exactly the right spot, and caught the item - to your surprise? How does this work? Reflexes some say. What exactly does that mean? This example is a case of our body acting without the brain’s involvement - Embodied Cognition. You move spontaneously and make a smooth catch, almost miraculously.

Breast Thermography

W
hen it comes to Breast cancer, early detection is the best defense. Women now have access to a unique technology that can provide them with this early warning: a procedure called Breast Thermography. This test is noninvasive, comfortable and safe, using no radiation and no compression of the breast. Breast Thermography is an excellent screening procedure that captures images of the breast to aid in the early detection of breast irregularities. It is based on the principle of temperature variation, chemical and blood vessel activity in the area of developing breast cancer, it is almost always higher than in a normal breast. Images are captured with ultra-sensitive digital infrared camera and analyzed with computers that seek to detect the increases in surface temperature and vascular changes. Just as unique as a fingerprint, each patient has a particular infrared map of their breasts. Any modification of this infrared map on serial imaging (images taken over months to years) may constitute an early sign of an ab-
normality. However, if abnormal pathology is suspected, this information is used to recommend further examinations and tests. First session provides a baseline of your thermal signature (like your fingerprint) and a subsequent session in 3 months to assure that patterns remain unchanged. Then it is recommended to do ongoing annual comparative studies to continue to detect any suspicious functional (physiological) changes. All records are archived for future comparative analysis. Breast thermographic technology has been FDA approved since 1982. It has been gaining national prominence and more widespread use recently, due to the recent mammogram guidelines. Many women make a personal choice to use thermal imaging instead of mammography, while most women use thermal imaging in addition to mammograms and/or ultra sounds. Boundaries, Life Made Easy by Liz Hablitzel
As I focus on taking full responsibility for myself, I allow others to take responsibility for themselves. If I do for another what they can do for themselves, why would they ever step up and take responsibility? Boundaries protect love by fully respecting the other’s autonomy. Boundaries help me to communicate and make choices that are good for me.
We all have boundaries. Boundaries are invisible and flexible, yet very real. Boundaries define what is me and not me. Everything inside my boundary is me. What is inside my boundary? My thoughts, feelings, needs, desires, attitudes, words, actions, values, my physical being and much more that is me and me alone. They define where I have power and where I don’t have power. The principle behind this paradigm is; “I cannot change another person by direct action. I can only change myself with God’s help. Others may have a tendency to change in reaction to my change.” Boundaries help us to use all the power we have. As we exercise this power within ourselves, we discover we are no longer victims of the imperfect people around us. I have power over the things inside me, but no power over the things outside of me. By understanding what I have power over, my life is greatly simplified. I no longer waste energy trying to change people or situations over which I have no power. I no longer try to manage my inside emotional world by trying to manipulate the outside world. Our boundaries have gates. We decide what comes in and what goes out. We use words and actions to express what is ‘ok’ or not ‘ok’ with us. This is how we control the gate that lets ‘good’ in and closes to keep the ‘bad’ out. Boundaries exist for protection. Protection from what? They protect me from anger and resentment.
My recovery teaches me “let my yes be yes and my no be no -- and no is complete sentence”. No matter how hard the other person resists it does not discount my NO. I often have a need to explain myself. I want to convince you. I want you to agree with me. And above all I want you to like me, love me and never leave me. Frankly boundaries involve risk. We never know how someone will react to the changes we have decided to make. I have to decide to take a stand so I can live free of resentments. Through the workshops I lead you will hear me say “you get what you allow” and “I teach people how to treat me”. My recovery is always reminding me to change the things I can and it always begins with me.

The purpose of boundaries is to negotiate relationships in such a way that we let the ‘good’ in and keep the ‘bad’ out. As crucial as they are, they are unbelievably difficult to master. Numerology in EDUCATION Can It Be Beneficial?
One of very first things I recognized when I was initially introduced to Numerology in 1984, was the powerful accuracy of this ancient esoteric science. I was deeply impressed by the depth and insights that could be provided by an accurate numerological profile. As I pursued my study and use of this modality, I came to realize that this relatively unknown science could be of great benefit in many facets of everyday life. Whether being used for greater self-understanding, greater understanding of those in our lives, or better understanding of our inter-personal relationships, Numerology has something to offer in a simple and easy-to- understand fashion. Something that can go a long way towards helping people in their everyday lives. More importantly (and this is something I have been advocating for many years), Numerology could become a powerful tool in the educational system. I have been incredibly fortunate to have worked with thousands of clients throughout the years and it is gratifying to watch someone gain the understanding and acceptance of themselves through the use of Numerology. One of the goals of my work has always been to assist in an individual’s growth.

I have always found it ironic that schools embrace the teachings of Pythagoras (generally considered to be the ‘father of Numerology’) through mathematics (who doesn’t remember learning the Pythagorean theory in geometry?), music and in many ways, the structure of school, yet they totally discount his work with numbers in the form of Numerology. And, in my opinion, they are missing out on a golden opportunity to better understand and help their students. It is my understanding that the Myers/Briggs test is often used to evaluate students. While that is good in that it provides a personality type and some level of insight into who they are, Numerology, on the other hand, not only provides the type, it can also explain the ‘whys’ of behavior. And, once one understands the ‘why’, they can work more effectively in teaching and helping. Throughout the years, I have had numerous occasions in which I was able to inform a parent of the poten-

The child will begin to drift and look for other things to occupy his mind, and many times this can lead to the child becoming a distraction as he attempts to amuse himself. In my opinion, rather than punishing this child, or labeling him or her and then prescribing medication, might not that child be better served through engaging in a curriculum that satiates his curiosity? Might not that child be better served if attention were paid to his or her particular interests and desires? I feel that all too often, the easy path of medicating and isolating these children is detrimental in a way that needn’t be. Through the use of Numerology, this child could be properly identified and treated accordingly. The active and curious child could be provided activities and studies that keep him engaged and interested in his education.

...continued In other instances, I have identified the person who comes out of an alcoholic or addictive family environment (this can be accomplished through the Challenge portion of Numerology). In the case of the addiction scenario, the 7 Challenge is the indicator of not only coming from that home life, it can also be a strong indicator of the possibility of that child falling into addictive behavior. It is rare that the child of an alcoholic begins to act up until they reach their teen years, at which point it might be difficult to overcome the behavioral issues. Just imagine if little Johnny could be identified as having an extremely high probability of coming from the addictive home.
There are other portions of a numerological profile that can also assist in the realm of teaching a child. Strong talents and abilities can be emphasized and encouraged. Weaknesses in areas of characteristics and personality could be strengthened because focus could be placed upon these particular areas with the goal of improvement. The creative child could be encouraged to use their creativity. The curious child could be encouraged to use his curiosity in a positive manner. The deep-thinker could be encouraged to use his intellect to further his education in different facets of their schooling. The bully could be taught to be compassionate, tolerant and sensitive to others. The aggressive child could be taught to channel that aggressiveness into something positive such as athletics.
The list of potential positives that can be gained is extensive and the benefits to the child and to society as a whole, are numerous. I realize that our current educational system has many problems, none of which can be easily solved. Yet, if molding young children into productive and active members of society is an ultimate goal, then anything that can assist in that pursuit should be given consideration. With recognition of these conditions as soon as possible, then educators and school counselors (as well as parents) could more effectively work with students with the goal being one of the ability to assist in overcoming these conditions in a way that creates long-term benefits to the child. Generosity According to the Bodhisattva Way of Life by The Venerable Lama Karma Chötso
So here we are in another issue of HolisticGLOBE Magazine. It‘s a joy to serve this publication and have a hand in spreading good news! So, when considering a subject for this piece, I wanted to write about something that could touch everyone’s heart in a positive way. This past weekend, I stayed at the monastery in New York State where I was trained -- and still train -- under the guidance of the abbot and meditation master, Lama Norlha Rinpoche, so my mind naturally turned toward thoughts of Bodhisattvas since I had his example in front of me every day. And since the retreat weekend was about training our minds in meditation, I thought that explaining how Bodhisattvas train would be the best subject to begin writing about in this issue. Stay tuned for more after this piece because the training of Bodhisattvas as set out by the Buddha is The Six Paramitas. Paramita is a Sanskrit word that means perfection. The six things that Bodhisattvas work at perfecting are generosity, morality, patience, joyous effort, meditative concentration and wisdom. I will begin with the first of these.
While at the monastery I witnessed many acts of generosity in many forms. One was the giving of resources to the community: people brought food and made donations. Another excellent act of generosity came from the participants who gave to each other by adhering to silence so that each person’s mind had the best chance to reach non-distracted meditation. The monastic staff at Kagyu Thubten Chöling gave their time and attention to each and every attendee, leading meditation sessions and making sure everyone’s needs were met. In Buddhism it is considered the greatest act of generosity to give the gift of the Dharma (the Buddha’s teachings) to others and Lama Rinpoche gave unstintingly of his wisdom, teaching for hours daily and sharing profound insights and practices with us. At the end of the retreat weekend I asked other Lamas at the monastery what they would say about generosity, this important first training that the Buddha gave Bodhisattvas. Here are a few of their thoughts (paraphrased a bit): “If you want to feel rich, give to others. It takes you away from your own neediness and gives you a sense of contentment and joy.”
“On the Bodhisattva path, your attention is on others’ needs rather than your own, so of course you want them to have what they need and you give them whatever you can”. And: “Are you kidding? Generosity’s the easiest way to accumulate the merit you need to attain enlightenment!” All of us sentient beings on this globe are so intricately interconnected that if one of us has more resources than he or she needs, someone else’s basic needs are not being met. This can turn into a negative path that, once we’re on it, causes us to truly fail each other and it’s so simple, so easy, not to fail. If our outlook changes from ‘what about me’ to ‘what about you’ in a relationship, that’s giving that promotes a healthy relationship. If our attention changes that way in our family, it strengthens all the members of the family. If we change our outlook on our community, the community can come together like a family. Keep moving the parameters farther out and pretty soon you have a global community. It all starts with just that small change -- the one that can make all of us feel rich! Sarva mangalam!
