Discovering
Obsidian
Jason Firmager shares his experience of this dark crystal…
O
BSIDIAN is a very unusual type of rock, which is formed as rhyolitic lava cools rapidly after an eruption. This can happen when the lava comes into contact with air or water. Rather than taking on a typical crystal matrix structure, obsidian is a form of volcanic glass. This means that, unlike other crystals which are often used in energy work, obsidian is not classed as a mineral.

Chemically, obsidians tend to be 70% or more silicone dioxide by weight and there are samples dating back as far as the Cretaceous and Ordovician eras. Several varieties of obsidian are found in nature. These range from dark brown and black to snowflake obsidian which is black with white patches and other examples which are striped or almost colourless. Energy workers are often attracted to obsidians which contain tiny bubble inclusions which give the effect of a gold, silver or fiery rainbow effect on the worked surface of a sphere or other piece of the black glass. Obsidians can be found in volcanic locations where rhyolitic eruptions have taken place. Some examples have been found in Scotland, but obsidian is also found on every continent.
