INTRO Welcome to my Top Five Aromatherapy Tips for Being Mindful. I’m Rachel Avalon, the founder of Holistic Living with Rachel Avalon and the creator of the Avalon Cleanse™ where people learn to transform their lives and enjoy true health with true purpose. I’m so excited you’re reading this because I absolutely love helping people empower their lives in profound and subtle ways. So, let’s dive in. Have you ever wanted to feel more mindful, but have struggled with distracting thoughts or circumstances? All it takes to be present is to inhale and exhale a few deep breaths. However, sometimes that’s easier said then done. As a Holistic Health Coach since 2005 (as well as a Certified Aromatherapist) I know how challenging it can be for people to carve out time for healthy, vitality-promoting habits. I also know, however, that small and consistent steps lead to magical places. After all, I’ve seen clients throughout the United States (and beyond) completely transform their lifestyle with this simple truth. When it comes to feeling greater peace and awareness one of the biggest mental hurdles was that for too long people were taught they had to sit in total silence and solitude to be mindful. Now we are collectively recognizing that we can practice greater awareness anytime, anywhere. And the power of plant medicine can truly help. For most people, essential oils are more alluring than breathwork alone. That’s because as we inhale essential oils the molecules trigger various biochemical responses that affect our mood and conjure up memories associated with those scents. Our bodies also recognize the difference between all-natural aromas and chemical (often toxic) fragrances and respond to them accordingly. So through abundant pleasure, rather than any sense of obligation to sit down and breathe, we can use essential oils to awaken the senses and connect to the present moment. Aromatherapy is an inviting portal to being in the now. So, here are my top five essential oils for practicing mindfulness through the art of aromatherapy, along with some helpful instructions. If you have them on hand to use right now, that’s great. If not, no worries. May these tips serve you well!

Instructions for Mindful Aromatherapy To receive the most benefits, say the positive affirmation that's included with each essential oil out loud or silently to yourself before and/or after the breathing exercise. I’ve also included positive declarations, which are extremely helpful if you find your ego resisting the affirmations at all.

Ŕ Hold an open bottle of one of the following essential oils a few inches under your nose and take 3 deep breaths in and out. Ŕ Then lower the bottle away and take another 3 deep breaths in and out. Ŕ Lift the bottle up again and take three deep breaths in and out. Ŕ Repeat this pattern for as little as one cycle and as long as 1-2 minutes.

Note: These descriptions can be displayed in your home as a quick reference and reminder for holistic, mindful living.

Lavender

has a very floral, soft scent. It helps relax and calm the mind. It has a lot of “yin” (feminine) energy, making it usually quite appealing to women and those who need to balance out their “yang” (male) energy. So, if you feel the need to unwind from excessive gogo-go energy, enjoy using some lavender essential oil. It also happens to be highly celebrated for skincare and its polyphenols, which support graceful aging. Therapeutic Traits Ŕ Antiseptic, Ŕ Anti-inflammatory Ŕ Sedative -particularly beneficial for insomnia and calming children before bedtime Additionally, Lavender is Known to Help Ŕ High blood pressure Ŕ Digestive issues Ŕ Anxiety Ŕ Pain -when topically used for joint/muscle pain Ŕ Menstrual cramps -when topically used on the lower abdomen and lower back Ŕ Insect bites Ŕ Burns Note: People allergic to the mint family may not tolerate lavender well. Dietary use: Lavender flowers can be used in tea plus the fresh or dried buds can be used in a myriad of dishes such as soups, salads, vegan cheese, sorbet or ice cream, sautéed vegetables, baked goods, and much more. Go lightly so the taste is pleasant rather than perfumey. Positive Affirmation: I feel relaxed and balanced. Positive Declaration: I am willing to feel relaxed and balanced.
