THE STORY OF INDIAN CRAFTSMANSHIP
When one thinks of the Maharajas and the ‘Days of the Raj’, the imagination is drawn to the Pink Palaces of Jaipur and the Lake Palace at Udiapur. A time when hunting was the rarest and most prestigious form of outdoor exercise indulged by Indian Royalty. It was a time of great opulence and exciting travel between India and Great Britain. It was during this period that Holland & Holland produced some of the most beautiful and decorated guns and rifles for the Maharajas of India. Elaborate gold engraving and precious jewels were often used to decorate these fine sporting guns. It was this highly detailed work that led me to India to discover the craftsmen of today. My travels led me to a meeting with Umang Hutheesing from Ahmedabad, whose design company creates finely crafted Indian outfits. Housed within the walls of the company’s headquarters, Hutheesing Havel is an extraordinary private collection of original clothing from the Maharaja era. This private collection inspired the collaboration with Holland & Holland to create exclusive one off pieces using Umang’s skilled craftsmen. This highly skilled handcraft involves embroidering delicate gold thread onto the finest cloth to create fantastic Indian dress wear. I was also intrigued by the symbolism engrained deep within Indian culture and was keen to reflect the significance of animals and birds in the collection. We have introduced this theme by taking original Indian designs and transforming them into patterns and prints. For instance, peacocks, which represent kindness, patience and fortune, appear on our luxurious silk waistcoats and a blouse for ladies. Tigers, symbolising power and energy provide the print for the ladies skirt and detailing on the mens shirts. Whilst elephants, signifying perfect wisdom, adorn the silk scarves and our quintessentially English silk bath robes. This collection is a celebration of a bygone era and all that it inspired. Holland & Holland have collaborated with Hutheesing Design Company to create a series of one off pieces for this collection based on original Maharaja clothing designs. Hutheesing Design Company was established by Magganbhai Hutheesing in the year 1881 with an aim to provide continued employment to artisans and at the same time create design solutions of the highest standards for international audiences. It is managed by Umang Hutheesing, a direct descendant of Magganbhai Hutheesing. Umang has restored the Hutheesing studios to their pristine glory and his design company offers expertise ranging from style and dĂŠcor to jewellery and costume design. His knowledge of Indian culture is extensive and he owns the largest collection of Royal clothing in India.
