Black Tie
In contrast to the extravagant, colourful style favoured by the dandies of the late 1700s, black became the popular colour in 1837 during Queen Victoria’s reign, and was traditionally adopted following the death of her husband Prince Albert, in 1861.
The Dinner Jacket originated in 1865 with Edward, Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII who fashioned a style of jacket without the traditional tails, to be worn on less formal evenings, for dinner at home or in a private men’s club. Formal dress ceased to be the measure of a gentleman’s social standing, and has remained to this day an egalitarian form of expression.
Tuxedo
In America, the dinner jacket became known as a ‘Tuxedo’ and was first fashioned in 1888 by the wealthy tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard IV. It took its name from the Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, New York, where the elite would meet and drink champagne into the small hours of the morning.
Morning Dress
For events taking place before 5pm e.g. weddings, funerals, state functions and Royal Ascot. Morning dress is still commonly worn in the UK.
