CHAPTER 1 CALLING AND ANOINTING

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL Ephesians 4:4–6 (NKJV) 4

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

OVERVIEW OF CALLING AND ANOINTING: In this section we will review the terms call or calling and anointing and how this applies to our ministry activities for the Kingdom of God.

WHAT IS MY CALLING?

Paul uses 2 terms in Ephesians 4:4… “CALLED” TAKEN FROM THE GR. VERB KALEO • It means to call, to be called or to invite • It is used in reference to God when it refers to God inviting someone into a special relationship with Himself • It is the idea of God inviting or summoning us into the blessings of salvation or to be called by God’s grace into the fullness of grace through Jesus Christ. “CALLING” TAKEN FROM THE GR. NOUN KLESIS • It refers to the invitation sent by God, the pure act of grace on the part of God by which He names us as the called out ones • Thus, calling is not a job, but a position in Christ • We are invited to have a special relationship with God and from the moment we receive this invitation we are known as friends of God… only God calls

§ § § § § § § § §

As believers, we are called to one thing… friendship with Jesus Christ. All acts of service are born out of our friendship with Jesus. Because we are followers of Jesus, we are set apart for God’s exclusive use. Thus, God doesn’t call us into the ministry. He calls us into relationship with Himself and in the context of our relationship He commands us to go into all the world and make disciples of all men, teaching them to obey all that He has commanded us to do. All ministry (acts of service) is an extension of this command. The specific acts of service are directed by the Holy Spirit as the Spirit guides us to meet the needs of the community that we are a part of. All ministry is an overflow of the Spirit’s work in our lives. When ministry stops being an overflow, it becomes a burden and eventually leads to burn out.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL Luke 4:18–19 (NKJV) 18

“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

WHAT IS ANOINTING?

ANOINTING IN THE OLD TESTAMENT § § § § §

In the Old Testament, people were anointed to signify that they were set apart to be used by God for a particular work or service The act of anointing involved pouring oil on the head of the person being anointed Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit The word anointed was used to refer to a person who had oil poured on their head for the purpose of setting them apart in service to God With anointing came special equipping and empowering by the Holy Spirit to accomplish the special work or service God had called the person to do

ANOINTING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT § In the Greek, it’s the word chrio and it literally means to rub with oil which symbolized in the physical what God was doing in the spiritual § When leaders anoint someone for service, we are only recognizing the anointing that God has already done § § § § § § § § § §

There are three words used to describe one’s relationship with the Holy Spirit First the Spirit is with us – this is the relationship that every person has with the Spirit and through this relationship the Spirit convicts men of sin and righteousness Second the Spirit is in us – this is what happens at the point of salvation Every believer is filled with the Holy Spirit Third the Spirit is upon us – this is what is described as the Baptism of the Holy Spirit When John the Baptist baptized Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him and He was baptized in the Holy Spirit and anointed for service Jesus said that the Spirit of the Lord anointed Him for ministry and the anointing was accompanied by power for service. The anointing cannot be manufactured or attained, it can only be received It is the anointing the authenticates a ministry as the work of God and is visible as the outward clothing with power If you try to do a work of God without the anointing, you will burn out because you will look to your limited resources for ministry instead of God’s unlimited resources for ministry

What is significant to observe: § § § § § §

There are a variety of ways to enter into ministry The way God brings you into ministry is generally the way that God continues to lead you throughout your ministry All ministry is dependent on faithfulness and obedience Success is not measured by outward measurements, but by faithfulness to God The patterns that God uses to lead and guide us can be observed and recognized by reviewing past experiences with God There is no where in the Bible where are told to follow our passions, we are only told to faithfully obey the Lord

CHAPTER 2 THE PROCESS

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL ORGANIC BASED MODEL 1 Corinthians 12:28 (NKJV) 28

And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

ALSO KNOWN AS THE PAULINE MODEL This is a theoretical model for stages of development in the life of a ministry and the type of leadership needed during each stage

Apostles: Pioneers who start the new work Prophets: Prophets declare the Word of God to the people. In the case of a church this would be the Senior Pastor Teachers: Teachers give the meaning of the text and apply it to every day life. Small group leaders, Sunday school teachers, Youth leaders all fit into this category. Miracles: In the original Greek, miracles refer to acts of power that break the power of darkness and deliver people out of darkness. This includes all forms of evangelism. Every ministry needs evangelists that bring people to the ministry. Gifts of Healing: Once you have people, you need a variety of healing gifts for discipleship. Healing for marriage, healing from the effects of self destruction, etc. Helps: Helps is the ability to pull in resources. Once you have a ministry, then need resources to do ministry. A mistake is to give resources for a ministry before it is needed. Administrations: Administrations is the ability to manage resources. Once you have ministry and resources, you need those who can ensure that the resources are wisely used. Varieties of Tongues: This speaks of intercession and prayer in the Spirit. Although it is listed last, it is not the last thing to be implemented. However once you have ministry, resources and administration the importance of Spirit directed prayer becomes more evident.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL KEY MINISTRY CONCEPTS THE PRIESTHOOD OF ALL BELIEVERS

1 Peter 2:5 (NKJV) 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:9 (NKJV) 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light Revelation 1:6 (NKJV) 6 and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Revelation 5:10 (NKJV) 10 And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.”

THE BODY OF CHRIST

Romans 12:4–8 (NKJV) 4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. 1 Corinthians 12:27–31 (NKJV) 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. 28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL KEY MINISTRY CONCEPTS GIFT BASED MINISTRY

1 Peter 4:10–11 (NKJV) 10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 (NKJV) 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 14:1–3 (NKJV) 14 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

§ § § § §

God provides everything that is needed in the local church. The primary role of leadership is to help people find their place in the Body of Christ so that the grace that God has given them can benefit others The role of leadership is not to do the work, but to equip the people to do the work In order to equip people to do the work, the leader needs to know the gifts and talents God has given to individuals and this takes time The enemy of gift based ministry is an organizational approach to ministry that is more interested in filling positions than empowering people

§ As you receive the vision that God has for the ministry He has assigned you to start it’s important to understand what your values are. § Values define who you are and what makes you unique as a ministry. § Here are 10 values that describe Calvary Chapel San Clemente. § You will need to define your own in light of the current culture and value structure of Calvary Chapel.

We derived our values by asking everyone to write down 3 things that would describe the church they wanted to attend in order of priority. We then boiled all their suggestions down to 10 values and then ranked them in order of importance. This is the list we came up with...

1. The Word of God 2. Worship 3. Being Spirit Led 4. Godly Leadership 5. Hospitality 6. Family Ministry 7. Prayer For Needs / Caring For The Broken 8. Evangelism 9. Serving 10. Generosity

CHAPTER 3 VISION AND VALUES

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL WHAT IS VISION Habakkuk 2:2–3 (NKJV) 2 Then the LORD answered me and said: “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. 3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry. DEFINITION

Vision is a GOD-given revelation (a clear mental picture) of the Kingdom reality that GOD desires to see birthed through a community of believers

WHY DO WE NEED A VISION?

• • • •

Vision brings focus activity Vision helps qualify what you should do and not do Vision gives you a method to measure effectiveness Vision keeps anarchy from happening and promotes unity

• • •

The first step to getting a vision is prayer Vision is received from God It may or may not exist in the present, but a vision from God will be a clear mental picture of what God wants to birth through you The next step is to write the vision down The third step is to clarify the vision so that it is easily understood The fourth step is to communicate the vision so others can run with the vision The fifth step is to set realistic expectations for when the vision will be fulfilled All vision is designed to be fulfilled at a future time

HOW DO I GET A VISION?

• • • • •

EIGHT KEY ELEMENTS OF VISION

• • • • • • • •

It paints a clear picture of the future It sees the future through God’s eyes and provides direction It is based on God’s purpose to transform people into the image of Jesus Christ It does not conform to the status quo It requires faith to accomplish It communicates clearly to others It motivates people to act and provides a sense of urgency It unifies a community of people

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL Calvary Chapel San Clemente Vision: The Vision of Calvary Chapel San Clemente is to know God and make Him known through relevant communication. In every ministry, outreach, and service, we desire to bring Christians closer to God and to bring nonbelievers to a saving relationship with Him. It is always our goal to accomplish this by showing how God's Word and faith in Him are applicable and relevant to everyday life through the preaching of grace filled living.

Calvary Chapel San Clemente Worship Ministry Vision The worship ministry at Calvary Chapel San Clemente exists to encounter God by seeking and responding to who God is as revealed in scripture and what He is doing in our community of faith. To equip leaders and worshippers by providing quality resources and training. To empower the church by training and releasing ministers.

Calvary Chapel San Clemente Children’s Ministry Vision Since families and children are a gift from God and one of our greatest assets, they have an immense priority within our family ministry. We desire to serve God and give our best effort to be positive role models, as we speak biblical truths and instill Christian values into the lives of the children. Our desire is to see each and every precious child have the opportunity to invite Jesus into their heart and make a soul transforming, life changing decision for Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. As we teach them, our hope is that they will grow spiritually, and grow in the knowledge and understanding of their Lord.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL WHAT ARE CORE VALUES Micah 6:8 (NKJV) 8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God? DEFINITION OF CORE VALUES

CORE VALUES are those non-negotiable beliefs that you hold. They influence the decisions you make and the behaviors you hold as acceptable or unacceptable. They shape the culture of your ministry. They never change unless your fundamental beliefs change. In determining the values for a ministry, it is important that they are derived from scripture and have a scriptural reference

HOW DO WE DETERMINE OUR VALUES?

1 –YOUR ACTIONS REVEAL WHAT YOU VALUE • Not all values are intentional or clearly articulated • There’s often a big difference between what you claim to value and how you behave • Your actions speak louder 2 –GOD HAS PUT VALUES WITHIN YOU • What do you love in ministry? • What breaks your heart or makes you righteously angry? • What makes you say, “NOT ON MY WATCH” 3 – NARROW YOUR VALUES TO TEN OR FEWER • If everything is important, nothing will be important. • If you value everything, you’ll value nothing.

Once you’ve clearly definite your values, describe them in short, life-giving statements 1. If can’t be tweeted they are too long. 2. They should be statements that strike emotion and motivate people to action. 3. If your values don’t move you, they won’t move other people. 4. Don’t put your values on a wall, put them on your heart and let them bleed out.

CHAPTER 4 ORGANIC STRUCTURE

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL 1 Chronicles 28:19 (NKJV) 19 “All this,” said David, “the LORD made me understand in writing, by His hand upon me, all the works of these plans.” MISCONCEPTION

There is a misconception that to plan, to have structure is unspiritual. But God gave David the plans, the people and the provision to build the temple of God. The only thing David didn’t have was permission. Permission was given to Solomon. In order to launch a vision you need purpose, plans, people, provision and permission. When you have all 5 components, God is giving you the grace to proceed.

WHAT IS ORGANIC STRUCTURE?

An organic organizational structure is relationship oriented not task oriented. The focus of leadership is to select the right people and to give them the freedom to function according to their unique gift set, leadership style and anointing from God. Organic structures have… • Low degree of formalization (network based) • Very few rules and procedures (face to face interaction) • Vague responsibilities and duties (high collaboration) • Adaptable and flexible (unpredictable) • Can handle rapidly changing environments • Informal communication systems and high verbal interaction • Flat Fluid organizational structure • Decentralized decision-making • Not much direct supervision

HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS?

• • • • • • • • • • •

Is the quality of the service high? Is there high satisfaction of those in the ministry? Is the ministry able to adapt to changes in the church? Is the quality of work life high? Is there operational efficiency? Are there strong partnerships with outside ministries? Do all activities match the vision and mission? Do all activities align with the values? Is information being communicated efficiently and appropriately? Are people wanting to be part of the ministry long term? Are new people wanting to join the ministry?

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL PLANNING THE STRUCTURE

Organic Structures are developed based on 3 major criteria. (1) Does it fit the vision of the ministry? (2) Is there a present need? (3) Is there a future need to be anticipated? People are then selected who have the gift set, leadership style and anointing to meet the needs of the ministry.

THE LAW OF GOOD ENOUGH: GOD EQUIPS THE APPOINTED, HE DOESN’T APPOINT THE EQUIPPED.

If you are waiting for the perfect person to serve in a particular role, you may be waiting a long time. God provides everything you need in the community of people you are ministering with and in your network of relationships. When pioneering a work for God, you need to start with the person who has the gift set, leadership style and anointing closes to what is needed. It may change naturally over time, but initially you start with what you have and move forward from there. In many cases, you end up growing the leaders you need within the ministry.

WHAT DOES THE ORGANIZATION LOOK LIKE AND WHAT WILL IT DO?

As you envision the structure for your ministry… What gift sets will you need?

What kind of tasks need to be accomplished?

What kind of experience do you want to create?

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL SYSTEMS OF COMMUNICATIONS

How do you plan on communicating values and vision?

What will your primary modes of communication be? (email, informal hallway meetings, formal sit down meetings, etc.)

How often will you communicate to your team

DECISION MAKING

What decisions do you need to be involved in making?

How do you develop a culture of shared decision making?

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL CULTURE

How will you cultivate belonging?

How will you cultivate a climate of trust?

How will you develop a climate that allows for other viewpoints to be understood on particular issues?

How do you build a common language?

How do you increase capability and quality in the ministry?

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL BELIEVE IN YOUR LEADERS AND SERVANTS

Belief is a choice and as a leader you can choose to believe or not. Your team is selected by you. If you do not believe in your team it is not their fault. It is a leadership issue. To increase a sense of belief, identify the strengths of each team member and focus on their strengths. Build your team’s capacity to succeed through effective coaching. Adapted from Unlocking Leadership Potential by Tom Peters How do you cultivate an environment that pushes people to be their best?

EXPAND YOUR EXPERIENCE

Burger King’s slogan for years was… “have it your way.” Is this a good leadership approach? The principle is this… people limit themselves by their own experience and exposure. They will usually lead the way they saw someone else lead. They will parrot the slogans another leader said. Their past experience will become the best way or the only way to do something. An effective leader is committed to a lifelong culture of learning. How do you cultivate a culture of learning?

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL GRACE

Grace is the real, powerful, empowering Presence of God at work in the believer’s life. The culture of grace is a Shalom culture that includes God’s favor, blessing, wealth, generosity, health, wellness, safety, wholeness, unrestrained relationships and unity. The culture of grace dignifies people by meeting their real needs as opposed to their apparent needs. Apparent needs are those needs that appear to be obvious. Real needs are the root causes that keep people from experiencing God’s Shalom in their life. What does a culture of grace look like to you?

SPIRIT LED

A Core Value is Spirit Led Leadership. Spirit led leadership is the fruit of intimacy with God. It is a moment by moment dependency on the Holy Spirit for direction and decision making. It is the primary leadership style that Calvary Chapel adheres to. What does Spirit Led Leadership look like to you?

CHAPTER 5 GATHER A TEAM

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL Ephesians 4:16 (NKJV) 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Before you can build a ministry team, you need to be clear on what you believe and where you are going. Without a clear vision, people won’t know how to partner with you. After you’ve complete the previous exercises, it’s time to build a team. Let’s look at the Jesus model for building a team? THROUGH FAMILY CONNECTIONS

And Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, Matthew 3:18 He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. He called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. Matthew 3:21-22 Notice the family connections between brothers

THROUGH THE REPUTATION OF HIS MINISTRY

Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. Luke 4:14-15 When people see the Lord in your ministry, it will attract others who want to be a part of what Jesus is doing.

THROUGH CHANCE MEETINGS

As He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, "Follow Me." So he arose and followed Him. Mark 2:14 This meeting occurred in the normal context of Jesus’ ministry

THROUGH A PRAYERFUL SELECTION PROCESS

Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: Luke 6:12-14 Prayer is essential in leadership selection

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL THROUGH THE RECOMMENDATION OF ANOTHER LEADER

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. John 1:36-37 Leaders need to be open about expressing their needs to other leaders. A generous leader will be willing to give their leaders in order to advance the Kingdom of God

THROUGH A FRIEND

Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found Him of whom Moses in the law, and also the prophets, wrote-Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." John 1:45-46 Our friendships are God’s provision for us as leaders. If God is bringing people into our sphere of influence, it is for His kingdom purposes.

NOTE: There are a variety of ways that God provides leadership and people for a ministry, but God primarily provides through relationship. Be careful not to put your bias on the people God has brought into your life. Share your vision for ministry with everyone. If God has assigned them to join you, then they will join you. If God has not assigned them to join you, then encourage them to pray for you. Our goal is not to recruit, but to share the vision God has revealed to us and embrace those who want to see that vision come to pass. Some may be in existing churches. It’s between them and the Lord whether they join the ministry or not. I would never ask anyone to leave their home Church, but I am willing to share the vision God has given me to anyone who is interested. It is their decision before God to join the vision, pray for the vision or to reject the vision entirely. Remember, it is God’s vision, God’s work and He will build the ministry. My role is to walk in moment by moment obedience to the Spirit’s leading and to communicate the vision God gives me. He will bring those who want to see the vision come to pass. In the event that someone from another church wants to join the vision, I encourage them to speak with their pastor or their church leadership. It is never my intent to “steal sheep.” But I also recognize that “sheep” can’t be stolen. They are led by the Spirit and I trust God to lead them to place He desires them to be. There are times when we partner with other ministries and that is an effective way to build unity and affect a region for the Kingdom of God that is beyond my individual ministry to accomplish. However, partnering with other ministries should not change the identity or vision of my ministry. I can only partner in as much as I am able to walk in agreement with others.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL OVERVIEW OF CHURCH THEOLOGY

The local church is where we serve, grow, experience koinonia (community and belonging), church discipline, worship, discipleship, family and accountability. The local church is where we give our gifts, talents, time and resources The local church is where Jesus touches the world practically and personally The local church is part of the universal Body of Christ. No local church is the sole expression of the Body of Christ. But each local church has it’s own unique identity, purpose and vision and gather’s a community that desires to see that vision realized. The local church is part of the Eternal Community of Faith. We are not only connected to the Body of Christ globally, but we are connected to the Body of Christ eternally. What God does through a generation has a purpose in the greater story God’s redemptive history with mankind.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL THE PROBLEM WITH MULTI-CHURCH CHRISTIANS

God joins believers to local communities based on His plan and purpose for their lives When church becomes about the event and not the community, the purpose for believers changes from extending God’s Kingdom to providing opportunities through program based churches or entertainment through celebrity based churches. Believers do not have a sense of vision, accountability or growth and do not mature in their faith The impact on the world is lost, the focus becomes the self and I go where I get the most out of church instead of going where God places me to impact the world

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL MULTI-LAYERED COMMUNITY MODEL

In any church or ministry there are 5 layers of community VISITORS: Visitors have no commitment. They come and go as they wish CONGREGANTS: Congregants have a low level of commitment. Congregants are those who consider Calvary Chapel San Clemente their home church and support the church financially. Congregants are joined by the Spirit to the local church. We do not have membership. MINISTERS: Ministers have a medium level of commitment. Ministers consider Calvary Chapel San Clemente their home church, see the Senior Pastor as their pastor and serve in a ministry at the church. Their commitment level is based on the need of the ministry they serve in. Ministers embrace the vision of the church and desire to see the vision realized. MINISTRY LEADERS (STAFF): Ministry leaders have a high level of commitment. Ministry leaders consider Calvary Chapel San Clemente their home church, support the church financially and consider the senior pastor their pastor. We rely on them to oversee areas of the ministry and their presence is essential. Ministry Leaders not only embrace the vision of the church but have ownership in the vision and work to see the vision realized. CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL LEADERSHIP TEAM: The Leadership Team has a high level of commitment. Leadership consider Calvary Chapel San Clemente their home church, support the church financially and consider the senior pastor their pastor. The leadership team have demonstrated a love for the people, embrace the vision of the church and display a high degree of ownership in the vision by assisting the senior pastor in leading the church.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL

CHAPTER 6 DEVELOP A COMMUNICATION PLAN

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL John 1:39 (NKJV) 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). A Communication Plan is key to any ministry. How you communicate, what you communicate, how often you communicate are essential to ministry success. Without good communication people will not attend your events, support your efforts, invite their friends. A Communication Plan involves word of mouth, direct mail, website, social media, e-blasts, advertisements and television or radio. The key to a good Communication Plan is to find what best reaches the people you are trying to connect with and to communicate a consistent message over a long period of time. When the message changes it dilutes the effectiveness of the Communication Plan. Like all areas of ministry, faithfulness is the bottom line for success. FIRST… WHY COMMUNICATE?

According to Lifeway Research, most Americans have never been invited to church… never. Yet 82% indicate that they would be at least “somewhat likely” to attend if invited. Most experts on evangelism agree that friendship evangelism is the most effect method to reaching the lost. A good Communication Plan opens the door for possible relationships.

KEEP THE GOAL IN MIND

Remember the goal is not to get people to attend your ministry. The goal is to open a door of relationship so that you will have the opportunity to encourage people in their relationship with God. We do this by leading them to Christ, praying for them or instructing them in God’s Word.

FAITHFULNESS IS KEY

As we’ve stated in the introduction, the most effective Communication Plan involves a simple message that is presented in a variety of avenues over a long period of time. The clearer and simpler the message is to understand, the easier it is for people to remember. This applies to everything from the name of the ministry, the URL of the website, the hashtag for twitter… even the time that the meeting is held. An event that happens every other week is harder to communicate than an event that happens every week. An event that has a long name is harder to communicate than an event that has a short name. An event that has a broad audience is harder to communicate than an event with a specific audience.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL FORMS OF COMMUNICATION WEB SITE

A website is one of the most effective means of communication because it provides a place where all the information regarding your ministry can be presented in a way that represents the look and feel you’re wanting to portray. A good website should include contact info, maps, directions, information for visitors, event calendar, event media such as audio or video and an area that is updated consistently such as a blog or announcement section. When launching a new ministry at a church, it’s important to make sure you have a presence on the church website. If you want a look or feel that is different from the church website, this can be achieved by setting up your own URL (website). Two ways to do this is to create your own URL or to add to the church URL. For instance, the family ministries at Calvary Chapel San Clemente have their own URL that is added to the church URL… kids.calvarysanclemente.org. To purchase your own URL, CCSC uses 1and1.com.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL BROCHURES / FLIERS / POSTCARDS

The second most effective means of communication are brochures, fliers or postcards. Brochures are needed to communicate the look and feel of an organization. Fliers and postcards are effective for communicating the look and feel of an event. The most effective designs are eye catching and communicate the who, what, when, where, cost of an event. The most compelling fliers or postcards are not generic or general invites, but event driven.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL WORD OF MOUTH / INVITATION

Word of mouth or personal invitations are the most effective means of communicating with people. It is important to give people tools to help them invite or share what is happening in your ministry. Flyers and postcards are effective for this use. But also, it’s important that the communication doesn’t stop with an invitation or by giving information. The communication needs to be followed up with a call to action. EX: Let me pick you up and we can go together. We’ve adopted the slogan from the Harvest Crusade… PRAY, INVITE, BRING

INVITE CARDS

We use business sized cards for invite cards. They are inexpensive and easy to carry.

VISITOR’S PACKET

Every new visitor gets a welcome packet. You will want to make sure your ministry flyer is included in the welcome packet. The welcome packet includes a letter from the Senior Pastor, a CD, information on the church and a connection card so that we can get their information.

DIRECT MAIL

Direct mail is one of the least effective ways to communicate. 2% response is the average rate. It’s not an option to rely on completely, but it is a good one to use as part of an overall communication plan.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL NEWPAPER ADVERTISEMENT

Newspaper ads are also one of the least effective ways to communicate. Why use them? Because Newspapers are also ways to build free publicity for your event. Advertisement is a way to build a relationship with local influencers who will promote your event for free.

EMAIL BLASTS

Email blasts are similar to direct mail. They do get read more often than direct mail, but the key to making an e-blast that people will read versus one they delete is content. It needs to be something they are interested in and their name needs to be from a list where they requested information from you. This keeps it from becoming spam, which is unwanted emails. I always set up a gmail with the ministry name in it… calvarysanclemente@gmail.com.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social Media isn’t the best means of communication in terms of response, but it is a good way to build a public image or to gain free publicity. Each social media outlet is designed for a specific purpose. Facebook reaches people Twitter informs perceptions Google+ networks passions Pinterest / Instagram share pictures Youtube creates shared experiences LinkedIn is great for prospecting Because of the ability for social networks to post on other platforms, the best use of your time is to pick one or two social media outlets and link them all together. I like Facebook and Instagram. I can post a picture on Instagram and it will automatically post on Facebook. I post daily devotions on Facebook and it’s automatically posted on twitter. If I do an eblast or post to my blog, it automatically posts on Facebook and Twitter.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Facebook – 2x per day Twitter – 5x per day Google+ - 2x per day Linkedin – 2x per day Blog – 1x day Instagram – 5x per day Remember social media is FREE.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL SOCIAL MEDIA The key to building your identity through social media is a consistent message. You want to post the same things over and over again. Your bio information should be the same. Your slogans should be the same. The artwork needs to be the same. The more consistent your message, the higher you will rank on Google searches, which means you will get more attention when people are looking for you. You will want to keep your user names similar. If you are @Godisgood on Twitter, make sure you are @Godisgood on Instagram and Facebook. You can also get a unique url in most social networks to identify your username like twitter.com/godisgood IN THIS SECTION WE WILL WORK ON CREATING CONTENT FOR YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK SITES. CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL WRITING YOUR MESSAGE What message are you communicating? It’s important to be very focused on the message you are communicating. For instance, all church communications focus on three things. The events we are doing and a daily word of encouragement called Grace For Today. The third thing we focus on is event publicity… photos of events as they are happening to share the excitement of what God is doing. What is your central message? Can you state it in a short statement? For instance, Calvary Chapel San Clemente is a Jesus Movement Church. That is one of our statements. Another is that we are a community of faith, hope and love under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. My message statement is… ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ My message is… ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL HASHTAGS When you post on Social Networks, it’s important to use hashtags. Hashtags are key search words that help people find your content. When enough people are following your hashtags, they will show up as a trend. This means you’re getting a lot of attention. Create a list of at least 5 hashtags or keywords that center around your ministry. For instance, Calvary Chapel San Clemente uses #calvarysanclemente or #ccsc or #calvarychapel. For twitter we use @sanclementecc or @hollanddavis. 1. _________________________________________________________________________ 2. _________________________________________________________________________ 3. _________________________________________________________________________ 4. _________________________________________________________________________ 5. ________________________________________________________________________

PUBLIC RELATIONS / PUBLICITY PUBLIC RELATIONS

Public relations (PR) is different from advertising. Advertising is often seen as less credible because it is paid for. Public Relations is seen as more credible because it’s someone else writing about you.

HOW DO YOU GET PEOPLE TO WRITE ABOUT YOU?

Press Releases. Press Releases are the quickest way to get free publicity. If well written, a press release can result in multiple published articles about your ministry and events. Think of a Press Release as a news article about your ministry or an event your ministry is doing. In order to write a good press release here are a few rules to follow.

RULES FOR WRITING PRESS RELEASES

Rule # 1: Use the press release to create interest in your ministry Rule # 2: Have a newsworthy story, a story that others would be interested in Rule # 3: Write it like a reporter would write it. Rule # 4: Provide good quotes and send pictures that can be used. Make sure the quotes are memorable and personal and the photos are compelling Rule # 5: Contact your main news reporters personally. Make a personal connection.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 18, 2012 12:57 pm

“LOVE SAN CLEMENTE” AN OVERWHELMING SUCCESS Four local churches gathered over 50 volunteers to show what could happen if believers put their faith in action. Love San Clemente, the brain child of Pastor Holland Davis of Worship Life Calvary Chapel San Clemente, contributed more than $ 10,000.00 in completed projects, labor and supplies to Shore Cliffs Middle School and the City of San Clemente. Love San Clemente, as reported by Jason Chung in the Orange County Register, is a seven day community service project that included Cornerstone Community Church, San Clemente Presbyterian Church, Southcoast Church International and Worship Life Calvary Chapel San Clemente. Love San Clemente launched with a food drive with bags donated by local San Clemente grocers including Ralph’s, Trader Joes and Stater Brothers. Over 450 bags were distributed and food collected was donated to Family Assistance Ministries, a community outreach that redistributes over $ 2.1 million in food to the hungry in Photo 1: Love San Clemente Volunteers launch food drive by distributing over 450 South Orange County. Holland Davis says, “We were told empty grocery bags. that food donations over the summer months are extremely low so we felt that this would be the best way to begin Love San Clemente… by meeting the needs of the poor.” On Monday, volunteers dusted cabinets, washed dishes and cleaned ovens and refrigerators in the student kitchen at Shorecliff’s Middle School. Chris Smith, pastor of Southcoast Church International says, “ The city uses this kitchen for after school programs and with budget cuts and growing classroom sizes we wanted to help out this teacher that does such a great job for the school.” Love San Clemente is looking for working refrigerators and ovens to replace the old non-‐working appliances used by San Clemente students. Photo 2: Volunteers clean the Student Kitchen at Shore Cliffs MIddle School

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL On Tuesday through Thursday, volunteers picked up trash, cleaned and painted two city buildings in the former San Clemente Municipal Trap and Skeet Range so they can be used for weddings and other events. Former members of the Gun Club that used the Skeet Range commented on what a blessing it was to see people who cared for this part of San Clemente history. On Friday, volunteers arrived at Family Assistance Ministries and helped sort clothes, organize closets with professional outfits for women going to job interviews and packing food for Photo 3: Young volunteers pain the Old Skeet distribution. Range Love San Clemente finished by honoring one of the military families with a special needs child who recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan with free tickets to the Dodger Game where the family was able to attend the Dodger’s batting practice and meet the players for autographs. The idea of Love San Clemente began when Pastor Holland Davis of Worship Life Calvary Chapel San Clemente went to the City of San Clemente and asked what his church could do to help. “We wanted to show people the love of God in practical ways,” Davis said. Chris Smith, who works part time as a recreation specialist for the city said Photo 4: Master Gunnery Srrgeant Chris Gonzales and Family at the Dodger Game he knew of needs that weren’t being met because of city budget constraints and challenged Holland to expand his vision to include more churches in San Clemente. This resulted in four churches from various denominational backgrounds joining together for seven days of community service showing God’s love to San Clemente… hence Love San Clemente. According to Davis, “This is our first year and we hope to do this every year.” Ron Sukut, Pastor of Cornerstone Community Church says, “San Clemente is such a cool town. We really do love our city and it was a blast getting together with others who wanted to give back to this beautiful place we call "home. We're looking forward to next time.” Davis says, “I hope what we’ve done in San Clemente will inspire other churches to look for practical ways to organize as the Body of Christ and show God’s love to their cities in practical ways. Wouldn’t it be awesome if next year we could do Love California and Photo 5: Love San Clemente helping Family Assistance Ministries just love bomb the entire state?” For more information on Love San Clemente you can visit lovesanclemente.com. Thanks goes to Jason Chung with the Orange County Register for his contribution to this article.

It is a guide for planning. When you create your budget, make sure you break down your costs into big picture areas such as Personnel, Communications, Event Costs. The goal is to get as many people as possible to your first event. As a rule of thumb, however many people come the first week only around half will return. In week three 75% will return and that will most likely be the amount of people you will start with. Have a way to collect the name, cell phone and email address of new guests A follow up plan can be as simple as giving them the tools they need to invite their friends. 4 to 6 week class of how to deal with a specific need It can be a follow up event It can be an orientation class to help people stay connected (table.calvarysanclemente.org) It can be a list of ways people can be involved

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL SOME THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND THE UNCHURCHED HAVE MANY CHOICES.

Make sure your ministry is clearly communicating where you are and where you meet

AWARENESS BUILDS VISITOR TRAFFIC

How many different ways does your ministry connect with people? Why would they want to attend your ministry? How can you help people find your ministry?

• • VISITORS DETERMINE GROWTH

• •

ALL VISITORS WILL NOT STAY

• •

Growth is dependent on attracting first time visitors to your ministry The more visitors you have, the more awareness people will have of your ministry Highly visible churches retain 10 to 20% of their first time guests Keep your expectations real and keep reaching out

SOME NEW PEOPLE WILL REALLY LOVE YOUR MINISTRY

• • •

Be comfortable with who you are Don’t compare yourself to other ministries You will connect with the people that love what you do. Respond to them and build community.

VISIBILITY AND IMAGE ARE TWIN ASSETS

Pay attention to how your ministry is being presented in all forms of media There is no negative image to overcome, you are shaping the image you want to have The image you are presenting needs to be consistent with who you really are

• •

NEW MINISTRIES MUST PRIORITIZE VISIBILITY

• • • •

Visibility is being seen by those not at your ministry See how other ministries are making themselves visible in the community How do the people attracted to your ministry learn about you? What are other ministries doing to communicate to their communities?

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL GOOD VISIBILITY KEEPS A CLEAR TARGET

Communicate clearly the purpose of your ministry

IMPROVED VISIBILITY BUILDS MORALE

• •

Morale will grow as you plan how to make a real difference and work to make it happen Increasing visibility for the sake of leading others to Christ is a selfless and holy ambition that displays the attitude and mission of Christ

• • •

Get other ministries talking about your ministry Partner with other ministries on events Encourage your ministry community to work their relational networks to bring new people to the ministry

ONE FINAL VISIBILITY DYNAMIC INVOLVES SYNERGISM

CHAPTER 8 GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL PRESENCE ORIENTED VISION John 5:19 (NKJV) 19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. Churches are programmed to grow. As living organisms, the natural result of community is growth. The question we have to ask ourselves as leaders is… are we getting in the way of growth? Are we encouraging growth that is consistent with the work that God is doing in the church? Presence Oriented Vision is learning to see Jesus at work in the church and learning to come alongside and bless or encourage the work of the Spirit. Here are some questions to ask. After you determine where Jesus is at work and what He is doing, the next step is to make sure your activities line up with your values. This process is called Value Driven Growth. 1: WHERE IS JESUS AT WORK?

KEYWORD: SEEK (Matt. 6:33) •

2: WHAT IS JESUS ALREADY DOING IN THAT REALM?

God will speak the vision for the church to the Senior Pastor. God doesn’t contradict Himself. If you and the Pastor are mutually submitted to God, you will have parallel vision. Look for where the people are. Jesus attracts a crowd everywhere He goes. What are people responding to?

KEYWORD: BLESS • • •

• •

Say yes to the activity of God. Discernment is the ability to recognize the presence of God. This means in order to accurately see God, you have to be willing to give up your preconceived ideas of how God works. God reveals to you His activities as if they are already happening when they’re not. THINK PROPHETIC OR VISIONARY LEADERS

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL

3: WHAT POWER IS JESUS GIVING TO DO THE TASK?

KEYWORD: TOOLS • • • • •

4: WHAT IS YOUR ASSIGNMENT?

Where God guides, He provides. Where is Spiritual transformation happening? Where are resources being released? Stop fighting God Use the creative abilities He has given you envision something new.

KEYWORD: CALL (Luke 4:43 – for this purpose I have been sent) • • •

5: HOW DOES THAT FIT IN THE LARGER REALM OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

Stay in your own lane. Do what only you can do – learn to delegate everything else. Remember that you are a servant, not a politician – stay on God’s side.

KEYWORD: COMMUNITY • • •

6: WHAT IS THE RISK TO OBEY?

All gifts of the Spirit are relational. All moves of the Spirit exist in the context of community. The leadership role is to serve, equip and train others to obey God – to be a disciple maker. (Eph 4:11-13)

KEYWORD: COST • • • • •

Faith always requires risk. Weigh the consequences to obedience Who will be affected? Is it the right timing? Is God truly speaking?

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL

7: DO YOU SEE THE LORD?

KEYWORD: REFLECT • • •

This is the lens we look through. Not What Would Jesus Do, but What Is Jesus Doing. I am constantly asking this question.

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!" (Isaiah 6:1-3) NOTE: ISAIAH HAS A LIFE-CHANGING ENCOUNTER WHEN HE SEES THE LORD.

• • • •

How is your life being changed by God through this process? Where are you leading people? Does your vision reflect God’s activity or is it simply built on your personal ambitions for ministry? Your vision will be different based on the community God is placing you in.

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL VALUE DRIVEN CHANGE Proverbs 29:18 (NKJV) 18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; But happy is he who keeps the law. Value Driven Change is growth that is motivated by your values and vision for ministry. I’ve developed a tool to help you think through your vision with your values in mind. It’s a concept called VALUE DRIVEN CHANGE. As you’ve been reflecting through the various checklists, one of the things that you’ve been intuitively doing is identifying your key VALUES. VALUES are those non-negotiable beliefs that you hold. They influence the decisions you make and the behaviors that you hold as acceptable or unacceptable. They never change unless your fundamental beliefs change. A VALUE might be something like “family comes first.” This might keep you from taking a job or entering into an activity because it conflicts with this core VALUE. Your VALUES will influence the steps you take in reaching your VISION. We’ve covered Value and Vision in Chapter 3 of the Calvary Chapel New Ministry Planning Manual, so you will want to refer to the values and the vision you received from the Lord in that section. THE WAY THE TOOL WORKS IS LIKE THIS ... In the top rectangle

• • •

Write down your VISION statement. This is where you want to go. What does it look like to you?

In the bottom rectangle

• •

Write down what success looks like to you. How do you know when you’ve reached your destination?

In the right hand column

• •

There is space to write down your VALUES. These are non-negotiable truths that influence every decision that you make.

In the middle section

• •

In this section identify 4 areas that need to be developed Write the steps you need to achieve in each area to reach your VISION.

The left hand column

Write your time line for when your VISION will come to pass.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL Let’s give an example: Let’s say your VISION is to develop a Training Institute for Worship Leaders. What success looks like is a one-year program to train worship leaders that will be involved in church planting or missions. Your five VALUES might be: Biblical Literacy, Pastoral Heart, Musical Excellency, Servant Leadership, and Godly Character. Now identify five focus areas. For discussion purposes let’s say Identify Instructors, Marketing, Classroom Logistics, Local Church Internship, Administration. Every step you take in each of those five areas needs to reflect your VALUES. If there is a step that conflicts with your VALUES, then rethink your approach until you find a way to reach your VISION without violating your VALUES. For instance, if your goal is servant leadership but your local church internship only provides opportunities for high visibility positions that showcase talent but offer no opportunity for nonvisible service, you may decide to not use that particular local church in favor of a church that will assign non-platform responsibilities like janitorial in order to develop servant leadership— even if the other church provides great opportunities. Do you get the idea? The idea isn’t to be opportunistic in building your VISION, but to remain true to your VALUES. Each step that you take as you are building your VISION should reflect your key VALUES. Otherwise, you end up with a ministry that is in conflict with your key VALUES, and you produce disciples that you can’t endorse because they haven’t caught the heart of your VISION. Here is the reality of this process: It will take longer to build something that reflects your key VALUES. There are always shortcuts to take, but if you wait on the Lord and allow HIM to build the VISION, it will not only be something you enjoy, it will also stand the test of time. As you consider your vision as a ministry leader, let me leave you with this quote to consider: VISION: THE CAPACITY TO CREATE A COMPELLING PICTURE OF THE DESIRED STATE OF AFFAIRS THAT INSPIRES PEOPLE TO RESPOND; THAT WHICH IS DESIRABLE, WHICH COULD BE, SHOULD BE; THAT WHICH IS ATTAINABLE. A GODLY VISION IS RIGHT FOR THE TIMES, RIGHT FOR THE CHURCH, AND RIGHT FOR THE PEOPLE. A GODLY VISION PROMOTES FAITH RATHER THAN FEAR. A GODLY VISION MOTIVATES PEOPLE TO ACTION. A GODLY VISION REQUIRES RISK-TAKING. A GODLY VISION GLORIFIES GOD, NOT PEOPLE. – BOB LOGAN Taken from Chapter 3: I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For from Let It Rise: A Manual For Worship by Holland Davis (published by Bridge Logos 2009).

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL

CHAPTER 9 FINISHING WELL

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL FINISHING WELL—SIX CHARACTERISTICS Luke 14:28–30 (NKJV) 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’ If you do an overview of the leaders in the Bible, what you discover is few leaders finished well. Moses, for instance, wasn’t allowed to enter the promised land because he misrepresented God. David committed adultery and his house was in turmoil afterwards. Solomon was drawn into idolatry. Samson gave into the pursuit of pleasure. Change the names and you could retell these stories in the headlines of modern day news. As leaders, not only is it important that we start well, but it can be even more important to finish well. Dr. J. Robert Clinton makes these 4 observations: Observation 1 Observation 2 Observation 3 Observation 4

Few Leaders Finish Well Leadership Is Difficult God’s enabling presence is the essential ingredient of successful leadership Spiritual Leadership can make a difference

Here are 6 characteristics taken from Dr. J. Robert Clinton of those who finish well. CHARACTERISTIC 1.

They maintain a personal vibrant relationship with God right up to the end. Example: Daniel is the classic O.T. leader who exemplifies this. In the N.T., Peter, Paul and John all demonstrate this. See the tone, the touch with God, the revelation from God, their trust in enabling grace for their lives in their writings.

CHARACTERISTIC 2.

They maintain a learning posture and can learn from various kinds of sources—life especially. This characteristic is also one of the enhancement factors for finishing well. Example: Daniel is the classic O.T. leader who exemplifies this. See Daniel 9 for a late in life illustration of one who continues to study and learn from the Scriptures. Paul and Peter are the classic N.T. leaders with a learning posture (see 2Pe 3:18 and 2Ti 4:13).

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL CHARACTERISTIC 3.

They manifest Christ-likeness in character as evidenced by the fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Example: Daniel is the classic O.T. leader who exemplifies godliness (See the summary references to him in Ezekiel 14:14,20). In the N.T. note the evidence of character transformation in Paul’s life (2Ti 2:24 and an illustration of it—the book of Philemon). These were men who over a lifetime moved from strong personalities with roughness in their leadership styles to strong personalities with gentleness in their leadership styles.

CHARACTERISTIC 4.

Truth is lived out in their lives so that convictions and promises of God are seen to be real. Example: Joshua’s statement about God’s promises never having failed him in his closing speech demonstrate this characteristic of someone believing God and staking his life on God’s truth (Joshua 23:14). See the many aside truth statements that Paul weaves into his two letters to Timothy. See his famous stirring convictions echoed in Acts 27:22-25.

CHARACTERISTIC 5.

They leave behind one or more ultimate contributions. In a study on legacies left behind by effective leaders who finished well I have identified the following categories: Examples: Daniel’s ultimate contributions include: saint, (mentor), writer, stabilizer. Paul’s ultimate contributions include: saint, mentor, pioneer, crusader, writer, promoter. Of course, in addition to these standard categories there are also unique legacies that leaders also leave behind. These have to be described individually for each leader.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL TABLE 1. CATEGORIES OF LASTING LEGACIES

Category Explanation Saint • A model life that others want to emulate Stylistic • A ministry model that others want to emulate Practitioners • Extensive personal ministry Mentors • End product changed lives • Extensive public ministry Public Rhetoricians • End product changed lives • Start new works for God Pioneers • End product is new churches, new movements, new works for God • Those who correct wrongs Crusaders • End product, changed institutions, societies, etc. which reflect justice, fairness, etc. • Those who introduce creative ways of doing things Artists • End products—whatever is created— as well as a model for how to do things differently • A special category of pioneer who starts a new Christian Founder organization • End product, the organization • Those who can work in churches, movements, and other organizations to improve them and keep them alive and Stabilizers consistent • End product the organization revitalized and efficient • Those who find out why things happen the way they do in Christian endeavor Researchers • End product an, understanding of the dynamics of things that can help others in Christian work • Those who can capture ideas in writing in order to help Writers others in Christian work • End product, the writing produced • Those who can motivate others and inspire them to use Promoters ideation, to join movements, etc. • End product people committing themselves to new ventures

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL CHARACTERISTIC 6.

They walk with a growing awareness of a sense of destiny and see some or all of it fulfilled. Definition: A sense of destiny is an inner conviction arising from an experience or a series of experiences in which there is a growing sense of awareness that God has His hand on a leader in a special way for special purposes. Over a lifetime a leader is prepared by God for a destiny, receives guidance toward that destiny, and increasingly completes that destiny. No Biblical leader who accomplished much for God failed to have a sense of destiny, one that usually grew over his/her lifetime. Examples: Joseph’s dreams and his saving of the embryonic nation; Moses’ saving of the nation; Paul’s vision to take the Gospel to the Gentiles.

Conclusion The classic example in the O.T. of a good finish is Daniel who manifests all six characteristics. The classic example in the N.T. other than Christ is Paul. There are gradations of finishing well. Some finish well but not quite having all six or lesser intensity on one or the other major characteristics. This list of characteristics is probably not complete. Others may not agree totally with them. In that case, they should at least provide an alternate list. But these are certainly evident in many leaders who have finished well. See Article, Leaving Behind a Legacy.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL FINISHING WELL—SIX MAJOR BARRIERS IDENTIFIED Comparative study of effective leaders who finished well has identified six. barriers that hindered leaders from finishing well. It only takes one of them to torpedo a leader. But frequently a leader who fails in one area will also fail in others. What are these barriers? We can learn from those who didn't finish well. We can be alerted to these barriers. We can avoid them in our own lives. Pr 22:3 tells us that, Sensible people will see trouble coming and avoid it, but an unthinking person will walk right into it and regret it later. Pr 22:3 Let me share with you six barriers to finishing well that I have identified. We need to look ahead in our lives and not walk right into these barriers. We need to avoid being entrapped by them. BARRIER 1.

Finances—their Use And Abuse Leaders, particularly those who have power positions and make important decisions concerning finances, tend to use practices which may encourage incorrect handling of finances and eventually wrong use. A character trait of greed often is rooted deep and eventually will cause impropriety with regard to finances. Numerous leaders have fallen due to some issue related to money. Biblical Examples: O.T.: Gideon's golden ephod. N.T.: Ananias and Sapphira.

BARRIER 2.

Power—its Abuse Leaders who are effective in ministry must use various power bases in order to accomplish their ministry. With power so available and being used almost daily, there is a tendency to abuse it. Leaders who rise to the top in a hierarchical system tend to assume privileges with their perceived status. Frequently, these privileges include abuse of power. And they usually have no counter balancing accountability. Biblical Example: Uzziah's usurping of priestly privilege.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL BARRIER 3.

Pride--which Leads To Downfall Pride (inappropriate and self-centered) can lead to a downfall of a leader. As a leader there is a dynamic tension that must be maintained. We must have a healthy respect for our selves, and yet we must recognize that we have nothing that was not given us by God and He is the one who really enables ministry. Biblical Example: David's numbering.

BARRIER 4.

Sex--illicit Relationships Illicit sexual relationships have been a major downfall both in the Bible and in western cultures. Joseph's classic integrity check with respect to sexual sin is the ideal model that should be in leaders minds. Biblical Example: David's sin with Bathsheba was a pivotal point from which his leadership never fully recovered. It was all downhill from there on.

BARRIER 5.

FAMILY--Critical Issues Problems between spouses or between parents and children or between siblings can destroy a leader's ministry. What is needed are Biblical values lived out with regard to husbandwife relationships, parent- children, and sibling relationships. Of growing importance in our day is the social base profiles for singles in ministry and for married couples. Biblical Example: David's family. Ammon and Tamar. Absalom's revenge.

CALVARY CHAPEL NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL @ 2015 Holland Davis

NEW MINISTRY PLANNING MANUAL BARRIER 6.

Plateauing. Leaders who are competent tend to plateau. Their very strength becomes a weakness. They can continue to minister at a level without there being a reality or Spirit empowered renewing effect. Most leaders will plateau several times in their life times of development. Some of the five enhancement factors for a good finish will counteract this tendency (perspective, learning posture, mentor, disciplines). There again is a dynamic tension that must be maintained between leveling off for good reasons, (consolidating one's growth and/or reaching the level of potential for which God has made you) and plateauing because of sinfulness or loss of vision. Biblical Example: David in the latter part of his reign just before Absalom's revolt.

Forewarned is forearmed. There are many other reasons why leaders don’t finish well—usually all related to sin in some form. But at least the six categories are major ones that have trapped many leaders and taken them out of the race. Leaders who want to finish well, Take heed! See Articles: Finishing Well—Six Characteristics; Finishing Well—Six Enhancements.
