WOMEN’S INITIATIVE NEWSLETTER Women Lawyers, Women Leaders Summer 2023
Meet Several Holland & Knight Summer Associates I had the pleasure of attending a 10-hour mediation, which resulted in a signed term sheet. It was incredibly rewarding to witness excellent lawyering on behalf of Holland & Knight. I also gained a baseline understanding of how mediations operate and strategies for a productive and successful session. It was also wonderful to interact with the client. It’s a day I likely won’t ever forget. Fun fact: I am a huge fan of Formula 1 and have a fantasy F1 team, which was at one point this summer ranked No. 2 out of more than 2 million teams globally.
More than 115 law students joined Holland & Knight offices across the U.S. to gain valuable hands-on legal experience as summer associates, in addition to taking time to get to know each other and making meaningful connections and memories. Meet seven of the 67 women who served as summer associates as they share their thoughts on what attracted them to the firm, their most memorable experience and – just for fun – an interesting fact about them. Brittney Falcon (WPB): University of Miami School of Law I was drawn to Holland & Knight because of the firm’s strong presence in Florida and excellent reputation in South Florida. During my first and second year as a law student, I made an effort to attend networking events at my law school and local Florida Association for Women Lawyers chapter, and at each event, I only heard great things about the people and culture of the firm. As I began my job search, I prioritized applying to firms with a diverse workforce, a good culture and a great client service reputation. Holland & Knight has exceeded my expectations in all of those areas.

Ashley Feighery (BHM): Cumberland School of Law, Samford University What attracted me to Holland & Knight was the ability to be connected to attorneys, not only in my office but all over the country. Having such a vast network of support is appealing as an incoming associate so I can learn as much as possible throughout the formative years of my career. What also attracted me was the people! I genuinely enjoyed meeting everyone during on-campus interviewing, and this allowed me to form even stronger connections throughout my 2L summer. My most memorable event was our office trip to the lake. Having a few days together really helped me get to know the attorneys outside of work, and it was also just a great time. My most valuable learning experience this summer was a research project I handled with one of the partners in the Birmingham office. He tasked me with researching case law that he was not sure would be out there, but if it was, it would greatly assist in our appeal. This project allowed me to dig deep into my research skills but also pushed me outside my comfort zone and challenged me. After a lengthy dive into the depths of Westlaw and developing new skills to refine my searches, I was able to find case law that perfectly supported our position. I was then afforded the opportunity to draft the section of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit appellate brief, which included my research. This project was valuable in that it demonstrated how assignments from attorneys can develop and evolve as the issues change, but also because it allowed me to strengthen my writing skills and receive invaluable feedback from seasoned attorneys. Fun fact: I am a spin instructor! Lindsey Khim (LAX): Loyola Law School - Los Angeles I was first attracted to Holland & Knight when I learned about its Private Wealth Services practice. I liked the idea of representing people and families during a potentially very difficult period of their lives. I was also impressed by the diversity of the Los Angeles office. Knowing that I would be able to learn from women, and many women of color, was exciting and I could see myself growing in my career at Holland & Knight. One of the most memorable days this summer was when I attended an all-day mediation. This was a great learning experience because I was able to meet the client, listen in on the strategic discussions and witness how attorneys advised the client.
Fun fact: I enjoy hiking in new places and have climbed the highest mountain in Hawaii.
Madison McNamara (BOS): Suffolk University Law School
McKenna Ligon (NSH): Wake Forest University School of Law
I knew rather quickly Holland & Knight would be the firm I aspired to work at after the Demystifying Large Firm Practice event I attended during my 1L year. I was attracted to the culture of the firm early on and that initial feeling only grew stronger after speaking with many partners and associates. A few major selling points for me were:
I was a 1L summer associate at Waller last year (prior to the combination), so I was eager to return this summer to the firm, now Holland & Knight, to see the exciting changes. Holland & Knight exceeded my expectations due to the firm’s welcoming culture and sophisticated work. During the summer, I saw firsthand how Holland & Knight maintains its uniquely warm culture by supporting individuals at the firm and helping them succeed in their professional and personal goals. The most memorable event of the summer was definitely the Farm Day event! It was a blast to explore Partners Bob Boston and James Weaver’s farm with several attorneys and my fellow summer associates. A learning experience that stood out to me was when I drafted my first set of ancillary documents for a corporate project. An associate took the time to explain the structure of acquiring a healthcare practice in states that prohibit the corporate practice of medicine. This explanation proved to be a foundational piece of information that helped me fully grasp the project at hand and several other projects I worked on throughout the summer. Fun fact: I love to travel. I’ve been to 11 countries – my favorite being Malta so far. I hope to add a few more destinations to the list after I take the bar exam next summer! Ferrell Littlejohn (NYC): Fordham University School of Law The people. From my very first interview, I felt like I was among friends. Unlike most large firms I’ve heard about, Holland & Knight attorneys were truly interested in me as a person, and we had genuine conversations. My initial feelings were only confirmed during my summer at the firm, where I was able to connect with so many amazing attorneys and staff in person. There are so many memorable experiences to count, but I’ll never forget when Partner Christopher Kelly gifted me a set of golf balls with his face printed on them. Each of them also reads, “Hit me with your best shot.”
1. How associates and partners worked with one another. I saw very early on that the collaboration amongst the practice groups extended to all levels of seniority and that associates felt comfortable speaking with partners. 2. The presence of women in the room. It was very important for me to work at a firm that not only supported women in leadership but also took ownership in ensuring their success. After having many conversations with the women at this firm, I felt confident that if I joined, I would be treated as an equal. 3. Mentorship. I really admired Holland & Knight’s mentorship program, which extends beyond the summer associate program. I have been fortunate enough to cultivate informal and formal mentorship relationships with various individuals at the firm in addition to my assigned mentors, but the fact that Holland & Knight prioritizes an environment of teaching and guiding was a huge selling point for me. One of the most memorable learning experiences I had this summer was working on my first project. I worked primarily for a senior associate on this project and worked on various research assignments throughout the summer. This experience was memorable because I knew I was valued at the firm from day one. I had great substantive conversations and meetings with the associate on my work product and my thoughts regarding the case. I truly felt as if my contributions were valuable and was never tasked with “busy work” at any point. Fun fact: I recently became a dual citizen of Italy.
Fun fact: I lived in Germany for two and a half years while in the U.S. Marine Corps and visited more than 25 countries. 3
Khanh Tran (HOU): Texas Tech University School of Law I was drawn to Holland & Knight because of the firm’s stellar track record in fostering professional growth and development for its associates. The firm not only provides a supportive and collaborative work environment but also places a strong emphasis on nurturing and empowering young attorneys. Additionally, I was deeply impressed by the firm’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion, as I firmly believe in the significance of creating a workplace that values and respects each individual’s unique contributions. The value placed on employee wellbeing and the promotion of a healthy work-life balance further resonated with my own priorities. I cannot express how grateful I am to be a part of Holland & Knight this summer as it solidified my passion for the legal profession, and I look forward to exploring future opportunities within the firm. Houston’s 45th LGBTQ+ Pride parade was my absolute favorite event! The energy, love and acceptance in the air were simply electrifying. The colorful floats, lively marchers and enthusiastic crowd created an unforgettable experience. It was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life celebrating together, supporting the LGBTQ+ community. The event left me feeling inspired, grateful and eager to continue supporting this vibrant and inclusive community. I honestly can’t wait for next year’s parade! Fun fact: I have been to more than 50 different restaurants in Houston during my 10-week stay, and I cannot wait to try more. Partners Deb Barnard and Janis Schiff Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award Holland & Knight Partners Deborah Barnard (BOS) and Janis Schiff (WAS) have been honored with the “Diversity and Inclusion: Lifetime Achievement” Award by Chambers USA. Deb and Janis were presented with the award on June 15 during a virtual ceremony celebrating the recipients of the Chambers USA Awards 2023. The award recognizes the honorees’ commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion throughout their careers, and the difference they have made both at Holland & Knight and in the wider legal community.
Deb and Janis founded and have led Holland & Knight’s groundbreaking Rising Star program since its inception. Both have served on the firm’s Directors Committee and in other significant leadership positions. Janis currently cochairs the firm’s National Retail Development and Leasing Team, and Deb is the firm’s Professional Development Partner. Every year, Holland & Knight selects a group of talented and dedicated women lawyers to participate in the Rising Star program – a dynamic and intensive program of leadership and business development. To be eligible, Rising Star candidates must be in at least their eighth year of practice and have been affiliated with Holland & Knight for at least two years. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the program continues to produce remarkable results. All Rising Star graduates at the firm are now partners, and 40 percent of those who were non-equity partners in the program are now equity partners. Four female members of Holland & Knight’s Directors Committee are former Rising Stars. Other graduates lead Holland & Knight offices and practice groups and serve in other firm leadership roles. From the beginning, the Rising Star program broke new ground in how it structured leadership and business development training for women. “The concept was to take women on the rise, give them additional resources and tools, and pair that with lots of personal support,” Janis said. “From its inception, we knew everyone had different needs, strengths and weaknesses,” Deb added. “We needed to be able to provide participants with personal attention to maximize impact.” The keys to the success of Rising Star program and its widespread impact are the novel approaches adopted by Deb and Janis, coupled with their personal investment: Individualized focus on the participants with simultaneous development of professional and often personal bonds within each class and between classes creates the Rising Star network. The program also requires participants to write a “legacy letter” describing how they will use what they learned to “pay it forward” and support the advancement of other women attorneys in the firm.
5
“We are thrilled that Chambers has recognized the significant contributions Deb and Janis have made over the course of their careers to ensure the success of our Rising Star program,” said Diversity Partner Tiffani Lee (MIA). “This program has served as a crucial pipeline for success for many of our attorneys and is further demonstration of our firm’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion. Deb and Janis could not be more worthy of being honored with this prestigious award.”
Firm Earns Mansfield Certified Status for 6th Consecutive Year Holland & Knight has achieved “Mansfield Certified” status for the sixth year in a row from Diversity Lab, an incubator for innovative ideas and solutions that boost diversity and inclusion in law. The Mansfield Rule initiative aims to ensure all talent at participating law firms has a fair and equal opportunity to advance into leadership. “This recognition reflects our firm’s continuing efforts to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion remain at the forefront of our ‘business as usual’ practices,” said Partner Judy Nemsick (NYC), national chair of the Holland & Knight Women’s Initiative. “We are grateful for Diversity Lab’s leadership in the industry. Its methodology provides a valuable framework for our firm to maintain and enhance an inclusive firm culture.” The Mansfield Rule Certification process measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women, underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, LGBTQ+ lawyers and lawyers with disabilities for various leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities, Chambers guide nominations and senior lateral attorney positions. 6
For the first time, Holland & Knight did not achieve the “Mansfield Certified Plus” designation. Diversity Lab set a high bar for the Plus certification this year. In addition to demonstrating that underrepresented lawyers represent at least 30 percent of a significant number of firm leadership roles and equity partnership, firms must also meet certain transparency requirements. Specifically, firms must share with all attorneys on a firmwide basis information regarding origination credits, compensation criteria, election and appointment processes and leadership descriptions. It is significant, however, that the firm met the 30 percent representation criteria in every Plus category.
Deb Feder Offers Insight Into Personal Branding Holland & Knight Women’s Initiative hosted its third virtual workshop with business development and legal practice coach Deb Feder on July 19. Partner Judy Nemsick (NYC) moderated the program, “Simple Strategies to Boost Your Professional Brand, Engage with Your Network and Thrive in Your Practice.”
Identify Priorities Feder began her presentation by asking attendees to write down everything – personal and professional – that needs to be done. Notice how many things are on the list. The nature of this practice makes us feel like we need to be busy all the time. If we stay in responsive mode, we can’t be strategic about who we are and what we need to do. Feder uses sticky notes as a way to identify priorities – these are different from obligations. She asked attendees to pick one priority each day that needs to be at the top of the list and focus on completing it. Define Your Professional Brand What do you want to be known for? If you don’t mention it, people will never know. A network is simply a connection with people. The stronger our network, the easier it is to navigate the ups, downs and changes that happen naturally through any career. Use LinkedIn as a way to broaden your network and stay connected. At each stage, we are learning from others – our clients, colleagues and partners. Particularly for summer associates, creating a network with new colleagues and classmates will help keep those relationships strong. For those who have been practicing for many years, we can use those connections to grow and deepen our practice. During a brief brainstorming session, Feder asked participants to define their professional brand by noting what you are known for, what you want others to say about you and the ways in which you want to grow. If your LinkedIn profile doesn’t match your professional brand, use your lists to make edits and updates. She suggested a few easy fixes: make sure your email address is listed in your contact information, use a current profile picture and add a relevant banner image related to your city’s skyline, firm logo or something that represents your practice. Make New Habits Stick To make sure these new habits stick and stay a priority, focus on small steps that work for you and your schedule. Make it fun, and if one aspect doesn’t work, try something else.
Some little things you can do to connect are check in on LinkedIn, schedule time on your calendar to follow Feder’s coaching, attend a networking event or say hello to people in the office. Shake it up to see what’s sticking and making a difference. Reward yourself for completing a task – it will energize you and make you want to keep moving forward. Additional Coaching As a reminder, Feder is offering her weekly coaching sessions to Holland & Knight for free through Dec. 31. Her email (deb@debfeder.com) must be marked as a “safe sender” so that it goes to the inbox rather than junk. To add the email address to the safe senders list: 1. Right click on the email > Select Junk > Junk Mail Options > Safe Senders List. 2. Click Add and enter in the email address of the sender > Click OK. 3. You can also check the boxes below to “Also trust email from my Contacts” and “Automatically add people I email to the Safe Senders List.” 4. Once all email addresses are added, click Apply. 5. In addition, Feder offers weekly coaching programs through Zoom. Mondays: Membership Tour (11:30 a.m. ET/10:30 a.m. CT): For those who are new or ready to move into a new course, this short tour of the platform will help you decide the next best step. Wednesdays: Focus30 (10:00 a.m. ET/9:00 a.m. CT): Each 30-minute session is all about networking, connections and moving your business development goals forward. Thursdays: Office Hours (9:30 a.m. ET/8:30 a.m. CT): Bring questions and join for conversation, LinkedIn content brainstorming and a challenge. 7
NAWL’s Annual Meeting: Connect Today and Conquer Tomorrow
Attorneys Attend Diversity in Law & Leadership Summit in Boston
In July, Partners Caitlin Saladrigas (WPB) and Courtney Worcester (BOS), along with former Summer Associates Ariel Dickerman and Hannah Kroll (both CHI), attended the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) Annual Meeting in Chicago.
Holland & Knight sponsored and had a notable presence at the Driving Diversity in Law & Leadership Summit in Boston, hosted by CenterForce.
Over the course of two days, attendees had the opportunity to attend a variety of panels covering a host of legal topics. Former Holland & Knight Senior Counsel Wendy Tamis Robbins (BOS) spoke on “Cultivating Connection & Understanding Lawyer Loneliness.” Sessions also focused on a variety of cutting-edge legal topics, including “SFFA v. Harvard: The Future of RaceConscious Admissions and DEI Initiatives” and “AI vs. Esquire: When Lawyers Meet Artificial Intelligence.” Highlights of the two-day conference also included a conversation with Dahlia Lithwick, MSNBC analyst and author of Lady Justice, who spoke about the recent U.S. Supreme Court term, as well as a discussion with NAWL award winners, including Solicitor General of the United States Elizabeth Prelogar, Global Chief Legal Officer at Jones Lang LaSalle IP Alan Tse, and Microsoft Vice President and Deputy General Counsel Amy Pannoni. In addition, Ariel and Hannah participated in programming designed specifically for law students and had an opportunity to speak with judges as well as current and past law clerks on how to pursue a judicial clerkship. They also attended an interactive session to learn and practice interview skills and networking best practices. Holland & Knight is a proud sponsor of NAWL and, as such, all attorneys are entitled to free membership in NAWL. To learn more about membership and ways you can become involved, contact Caitlin, who co-chairs NAWL’s Women in Litigation Practice Area Affinity Group, or Courtney, who serves on NAWL’s Board of Directors.

The conferences for in-house counsel and corporate leaders across various industries offer stimulating, thought-provoking discussion around a number of topics, including prioritizing DEI initiatives in a hybrid workplace, disrupting the “Noah’s Ark” approach to inclusion, understanding the challenges and harnessing the benefits of a multigenerational workplace, and shifting the way we communicate and present ourselves in the workplace. Partner Courtney Worcester, along with Associates Aly Newton and Meghal Shah (all BOS), attended the Boston conference on June 14. Meghal served as a panelist during the “Mentorship Matters but Sponsorship Moves the Needle” session, and the speakers discussed the differences between mentors and sponsors, strategies on how to cultivate sponsors and the importance of advocating for others. “The power of an effective sponsor can be instrumental in advancing one’s career,” said Meghal. “It is incumbent on us to not only be intentional about these relationships but to also pay it forward when we can.”
