Most adults come to a point in their lives where they must start helping with the care of a parent. With those changes come more responsibility and the feelings of personal restriction caused by the situation at hand. Going over every day to check on your loved one or no longer having a weekend to yourself cansometimes seem stressful and often times leads to the feelings of needing to just get away for a while. We all want our parents or loved ones to feel good about staying at home or in place, but doing so can certainly wear us children out. Helping a parent stay at home is usually one of the difficult decisions a child or loved one can make. Most parents

wouldn’t want to give additional pressure to their child by having them make a decision on what to do with mom or dad. Having a conversation early on and finding out the wants or needs of a loved one is ideal. By having “The Talk” then figuring out wants and expectations can place everyone at ease. Look for these color-coded housing types on the map & pages of this magazine …

ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITIES 55+ either age targeted or age restricted offer home ownership for adults 55+. These communities are maintenance free and offer a monthly association fee. Many of these communities are single family homes, cottages, patio homes, condominiums and townhomes. They offer a clubhouse with fitness center, pool, spa and other amenities. SENIOR APARTMENTS offer all the amenities of regular apartment communities but have a minimum age requirement, in some communities it is 55 years of age, in others it is 62. Many of these apartments offer reduced rent for those that qualify, they are identified as “affordable” apartment communities. Both types of senior apartments offer many amenities such as pools, community rooms, and lots of activities. They do not offer meals.

INDEPENDENT LIVING WITH SERVICE COMMUNITIES offer older adult congregate housing that is generally replete with many amenities and social activities and services. Some independent living communities offer health care services, and can accommodate older residents with chronic health problems. Most communities offer restaurant-style meals, frequent events and country club style furnishings. They offer exercise rooms and planned activities, as well as resident clubs and interest groups. ASSISTED LIVING & RESIDENTIAL LIVING What are types and sizes? Type A: Resident must be physically and mentally capable of evacuating the facility unassisted. This may include the mobile non-ambulatory persons such as those who are in wheelchairs or electric carts and can transfer and evacuate themselves in an emergency. Does not require routine attendance during nighttime sleeping hours. Type B: Resident may require staff assistance to evacuate and may be incapable of following directions under emergency conditions. May require attendance during nighttime sleeping hours. Residents may not be permanently bedfast. Type C: Four-Bed facility which meets the minimum standards and program rules for enrollment with DADS as an adult foster care facility. (Requires a contract with DADS.) PERSONAL CARE HOMES this is a home in a residential care setting equipped to give adequate care to three residents. A fourth person may be added if it is a close relative to the owner. Personal care services may be delivered, i.e. assistance with bathing, moving, feeding, general oversight of the physical and mental well-being of a person who needs assistance.

ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES offer help with all aspects of daily activities (bathing, grooming and dressing assistance, perhaps) in atmosphere of semi-private living units. There is a wide range of services and amenities offered in this category. Some facilities provide the basic care mandated by law. Others provide many activities, excellent meals and beautiful appointments. All are currently licensed by the state as assisted living communities. ALZHEIMER’S MEMORY CARE COMMUNITIES can be a special unit of a free-standing community designed to sensitively care for those with Alzheimer’s or memory-related disorders. Alzheimer’s is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain, results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. Other senior living environments may be appropriate for residents in early, or even mild stage of the disease. However, unless they have a specialized dementia unit, transfer to another facility will be required as the disease progresses. Alzheimer’s Facility: A Type B Assisted Living that is certified to provide specialized services to residents, with Alzheimer’s or a related condition: Small: Small facilities are defined as those with 16 or less beds. (A/B) Large: Large facilities are defined as those with 17 or more beds. (A/B) SKILLED NURSING / PHYSICAL REHABILITATION COMMUNITIES Offer hospital-like attention in an institutional atmosphere. These facilities offer 24-hour supervision. The amount of additional services, upkeep, food, and the structure of facilities can vary from nursing home to nursing home. They also may specialize in short term or acute nursing care, Intermediate care or long term skilled nursing care. HOSPICE CARE care may be provided in the home or a senior care facility. Services can include pain management and a variety of emotional, spiritual and physical support issues. HOME HEALTH CARE agencies offer skilled nursing services, wound care, distribution of medIcation, physical and rehabilitation therapies.

PERSONAL CARE SERVICES providers of licensed health care services in the home and companies non-medical assistance with such tasks as bathing, dressing, meal preparation and transportation.

Networking group connects senior service providers When you think about “first Friday,” you probably think about a day on the calendar, right? In San Antonio it also is the name of one of the longest running and largest service-provider networking groups serving the senior community. It is an educational and networking meeting for the professional senior providers, but it is also a website resource for seniors looking for service providers www.firstfridaynetwork.org).

“In 1984, a group (of) like-minded assisted living, nursing home and independent living providers saw the need to stay abreast of the changes going on in the industry,” said First Friday Network President Charlie Gerdes, Area Director of Sales for Gentiva Hospice South. “These professionals decided that they would meet on the first Friday of the month. Morningside Manor promoted the start of our group.”

Today’s First Friday Networking group of more than 400 members meets on the first Friday of the month at a sponsored rotation of locations. Lakeside Assisted Living hosted the June meeting to a packed house of 120 networkers with breakfast in their 1-year-old facility.

“I am a firm believer that the First Friday Networking Group is an amazing benefit to meet the needs of the seniors in San Antonio. There are providers who need these resources to help their seniors,” said Gina Boggs, Executive Director of Lakeside Assisted Living. “It’s like someone showing up with a gift – a

basket full of resources to select from. What better gift to have for our San Antonio seniors?”

At a First Friday Network meeting more than three years ago, an idea evolved. An annual senior event, promoted by the First Friday Network, would be held to begin the season opening of Morgan’s Wonderland park. Because the rides are designed to be wheelchair and walker accessible, it allows seniors to participate easily. As the event has grown, a health-care fair has been added to provide resource information.

“I will never forget a story I was told by the daughter of one of our event attenders,” said Gerdes. “She said that they loved the Morgan’s Wonderland event. She explained that her dad has dementia and he loves to ride the train. It brings back memories for him of his childhood.”

Helen Trowsdale, owner of AA Care Services explained, “In providing concierge in-home care for seniors, we want to network with reputable resources. Otherwise all we can do is look for resources on the Internet. And I don’t know those sources. I like to meet any referral I offer my clients face to face. I am able to interview the person and make sure that their customer service reflects mine.
