How to:
PLAIT YOUR HAIR Hair ties Comb Brush Hair Spray (optional) Decorative clips (optional)
The Traditional Plait: Divide:
Start off by dividing hair into three equal sections, after combing it out and giving it a good brush.
Criss-Cross:
Learn The Basics
Reach out for the section on the left and bring it over the middle section. Then reach out for the section on the right and take it over the middle section, in a crisscross manner. You should tie both the right and the left section over the middle one. Tie the strands of hair firmly into place. Repeat this step until you reach the end of the hair.
Tie:
Proceed to finish off the plait with a rubber band tied tightly around the end of the hair. Use hair spray to hold in place, and decorate with pins and clips! Even fresh flowers look cool!
The French Plait: Divide:
Comb out hair and remove knots and tangles. This is crucial to the ‘success’ of a French plait. Begin from the top and divide the hair into six to seven layers.
Plait:
1 - You’ve to be both careful and skilful now. Between your index finger and thumb, grip strands of hair from the top layer of the head. After doing so, divide these strands of hair into three sections. The sections should be almost if not equal in size. Pull the right section over the middle and follow it up by pulling the left over the same. Repeat this step until the top layer is completely plaited. 2 - Now go on to the second layer. This step too requires concentration and skill. Begin working on the strands of hair on the left side of the second layer and pull it over to the left of the side of the first layer. You should be looking at reaching the middle of what will become your French plait. Move to the right hand side of the second layer and pull the strands of hair over to the right of the first layer. You simply have to repeat what you did in the left side of the second layer in the right side of the same.
Finish:
Repeat these steps until all the layers of hair have been pulled to the middle. Finish off the plait by tying together the end of the hair with a rubber or elastic band. Use hair spray to hold in place, and decorate with your choice of clips, pins, bows or flowers!

How to:
MANICURE NAILS Nail Polish Remover Cotton Balls Manicure Set With clippers, nail file, orange stick Bowl of Warm Water Hand Lotion or Olive Oil Nail Polish
Pamper Me!
A do-it-yourself manicure is an quick, easy and cheap way to spruce up your hands before going out. It is also a good natural option for those who may have sensitive skin as many salons do not use natural products.
Remove:
Take off old color with acetone polish remover on a cotton ball. (Don’t use a tissue, it will just fall apart and doesn’t absorb the remover well.)
Trim:
Cut your nails to your length of choice. Using a nail file, gently file into shape. There are two main options: square or rounded.
Soak :
Rest hands in a bowl of warm water for five minutes. Add a few squeezes of hand soap to soften them a bit more. Make sure the water’s not too hot or it will dry out your hands and nails.
Soften:
Apply cuticle oil or lotion on dry hands to nourish and soften rough spots. If you don’t have a professional product on hand, olive oil will work just as well; apply with a cotton ball.
Push:
Use the orange stick to press cuticles back so they don’t get in the way of the polish. Some people cut their cuticles for aesthetic purposes, but it’s best not to do this at home.
36
Scrub:
Exfoliate hands with a body scrub or use homemade mixture of olive oil and coarse sea salt or raw sugar. Scrub into your nails for two to three minutes, then wash thoroughly.
Moisturize:
Dry hands and apply a rich moisturizer. Try one of our favorite moisturizers! Use a cotton ball to take off any excess moisturizer on your nails before beginning to apply polish.
Polish:
Apply the base coat first, then apply two thin coats of your favourite colour nail polish. Finish with the clear top coat. Dry under a fan or by waving your hands around erratically!
Helpful Hints:
• If you don’t have time to paint your nails, just take off the polish and moisturize. It will look much better than chipped paint. • Light polish is easier to maintain than dark polish – chips and cracks aren’t as noticeable. • Keep polish in a cool, dry place, like the fridge. It’ll last longer. • Cool air, rather than hot air will help your nails to dry quicker. Test to see if they are dry by lightly pressing one of your nails to your bottom lip - if it is still wet, it won’t ruin the finish.

How to:
USE MAKE-UP Eyeshadow Foundation Blush Lip Gloss Mascara
Good make-up should be used only to enhance your natural beauty. Colours should be chosen based on your natural skin/ eye colour. If you decide to use make-up to cover yourself up, it will begin to look BAD.
Skin:
To choose the most appropriate foundation for your skin tone, the best thing you can do is go to your local Make-up store, and ask the assistant to pick the best one for you. However, if you want to learn how to do it on your own, the best place to test it is on your inner wrist. Make sure you are in natural light, and it should blend into your skin-tone and be not too noticeable.
Make Me Up!
Foundation is best applied with a foundation brush, but you can use a make-up sponge, or your fingers if you are really stuck. Make sure you blend it around your jaw line and neck, otherwise you may look as though you have a mask on!
Cheeks:
To highlight the contours of your face, you can use either a blusher or bronzer. Fairer skin tones tend to suit peachy pink blushers, while darker skin tones suit the bronzer. Get a second opinion to ensure you choose the right one, and you don’t put too much on!
Lips:
Lets face it - lipstick is for old ladies! Lip gloss is definitely the best option, as its not only usually cheaper than lipstick, its keeps those lips super shiny, and nice and moisturised. Pick a lighter shade if you have pale complexion, or be bold if you have a darker skin tone!
38
Blue Eyes:
For everyday wear try: grey-brown, greys, violet, purple, deep blue, smoky grey or black. To be a bit different: silver, turquoise, or a fuschia pink.
Green Or Hazel Eyes:
For everyday wear try: brown, apricot, purple, plum, khaki or forest green. To be a bit different: gold, lime-green, light green, or bright purple.
Brown Eyes:
For everyday wear try: copper, bronze, creamy-golds, soft pink, apricot, brown, beige, and khaki-green. To be a bit different: tangerine, royal blue, hot pink, or lime-green.
All Eye Colours:
For everyday wear try: navy or charcoal base to define and a powderblue shadow for highlighting. To be a bit different: silver-sparkle shadow makes all eyes look edgy.
Mascara & Eye-Liner:
Its best to choose a eyeliner and mascara based on the combination of your hair, eye and skin colour, as not every one suits a dark heavy black. If you have blonde hair, and fair skin you can try a combination of browns. If you have blue eyes - you could be adventurous and use a funky blue mascara.

PRESS FLOWERS 2 pieces of Wood ( 15cmx15cm) 4 Bolts (6-7cm long) 4 Butterfly Nuts (Aka Wing nuts) 10 pieces Cardboard (15cmx15cm) 20 pieces Paper (15cmx15cm) Drill (ask Dad)
Pressing flowers is a nice skill to have when you wish to preserve some of your favorite blossoms from a bouquet or flower garden. They are great for decorating cards, or as a decoration to an art project. Lay one piece of wood on top of the other, with the paper and cardboard in between. Drill a hole 2cm away from each corner (so you will have four holes, one in each corner). The hole needs to be big enough for each bolt to fit into it - so get Dad to help you choose the right size drill bit. To press the flowers, layer in this order: bottom piece of wood, cardboard, paper, flowers, paper, cardboard, paper, flowers and so on until you have layered up all the card and paper. When you are done, place the top piece of wood over the bolts, and secure with the butterfly nuts, making sure it is screwed down very tight. Store the press somewhere warm and dry for three to four weeks.
Preserve Beauty
44
If you don't have the tools available to make a flower press, and alternative and still effective method is to pile the paper and flowers under a heavy pile of books. You just need to remember not to accidently move them during the pressing!
How to:
MAKE CRYSTALS 10grams of Potassium Aluminium Sulfate (Alum) A Drinking Glass An Ice Block Stick (clean) Warm Water Cotton Thread Small, sharp-edged Stones, (Thoroughly cleaned!)
Watching a crystal grow on your window sill can be good fun, and exciting! If you add a few drops of food colouring, you cam make them different colours! Potassium Aluminium Sulfate is a non-toxic household chemical, and you should find it at your local chemist, just tell them what you intend to use it for. In the drinking glass, pour in enough warm water to cover the stones (around a third of a cup), but do not put the stones in just yet. Add the Alum to the warm water, and stir furiously with the ice block stick until it stops dissolving. You may be left with a few grains left at the bottom, but just ignore this. Tie one end of the thread around the ice block stick, and the other to one of the sharp rocks. Then, balance the ice block stick across the top of the glass, and put the rock into the chemical water. Tighten the thread up, so it won't slack. If you want to colour your crystal, add the food colouring to the water now.
Get into Science!
Place your glass, in the arranged setup in a warm place, and the window sill is ideal. The heat from the sun will evaporate the liquid and in turn create your crystal! You can take out the crystal you've grow, and repeat the process to grow an even bigger one (just remake the mixture, and put your small crystal back in!) It should take less than 3 weeks to grow your first crystal!
45
How to:
GROW SUNFLOWERS Sunflower Seeds (10 or so) A recycled Plastic Container (E.g. a halved milk bottle) A medium sized Pot Nutritious Soil Thin Wooden Stake (E.g. Bamboo stick)
Growing sunflowers can be really rewarding, even though it is such a simple thing to do! The plants are called sunflowers because their flowers will always face the sun, and they do of course resemble the sun once mature. The grow very quickly compared to other plants, which makes it most rewarding! Planting your sunflower seeds is best done late spring. Start out by planting them in your small recycled container, and the soil will heat quicker than a larger container, making the seeds sprout quicker. Keep the container in a warm place, and you should see the sprouts appear within a few days! When your sprouts reach a decent size (after three or four weeks), re-pot them into the medium sized pot. It needs to be heavy enough to eventually hold the thick stalk of the sunflower, and have enough room to insert a thin wooden stake to support the plant. As the plant grows, you may find it needs to be supported with the wooden stake, so just use twisty-ties to secure it. They can grow up to 2.4 metres in height, so be prepared!
Brighten Your Day!
46
Remember that the plant needs a be in a spot that receives regular sunshine, and needs to be watered each day. When the flowers eventually fade, you will find you have new seeds for next year!
How to make: BATH SALTS 2 cups ‘dead’ Sea Salt 2 teaspoons Baking Soda 10 drops Essential Oils (E.g. lavender, ylang ylang, or jasmine) Few drops of Food Colouring Of your choice (optional) A small Glass Jar Ribbon to decorate!
Bath salts make a nice gift for your mother, or grandmother, or anybody who may look a little wound-up. Add a few shakes into a hot bath a few minutes before you jump in, and the aromas will help you relax, while the salt will help heal sores and generally re-condition your skin. Mix together the salt, baking soda, oils and colouring for around 2 minutes, to let all the oil and colour dissolve into the salt. Spoon the salts into the glass jars and screw the tops on tight! If moisture can get in, it may ruin the appearance of the salts. Decorate with your own labels and ribbons. You can find different flavoured oils can help different things; for example, Lavender is good to let the body relax, and mint can help rejuvenate and energize.
Great Gift Idea!

How to make: FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS A range of coloured Embroidery Threads A Clip Board A Good Friend (To give your bracelet to!)
Cand Strip y e
Friendship bracelets are very simple, but at heart they're a token or friendship, made for and given to a dear friend. Originally from South America, the hand-woven bracelets became popular in the 1970's - not just with girls.
Snake around the pole Cut 2 strands, of 2 colours., around a 1 metre long. Tie a knot in the top, and clip under your clip board, as seen in A
A 48
Take the left and cross it on top of the right, making the shape as seen in B. Then loop the left strand under the right and bring it through the opening, as seen in C.
This forms a knot that you will pull tight by sliding it toward the big knot at the top. Repeat this with the same string for as long as you want this color.
B
C
When you’re ready to change colors, just take the right-hand strand and move it to the left. Restart the knotting process again with the new colour. When finished, tie with a big knot at the end.
Candy stripe Cut 3 strands of 3 colours, around 1 metre long. Tie them in a knot at the top. Clip the top into your clip board, and separate the strands by colour, as in A
A
Take the left-most strand, and loop over the strand directly to its right. Bring the left strand through the loop - back towards the left, pulling tight into a knot, as in B. Repeat for each strand, moving from the left to the right.
Take the next left-most strand, as in C, and start repeating the knotting process, slowly moving to the right again, as in D. The key is to make sure each knot is very tight.
B
C
Repeat this process of knotting with the left strand, to the right, until there is no length left. Knot the ends tightly together. Tie onto your friends hand & your done!
D
Snake around the pole 2 For a heftier and more colorful snake around the pole, use 4 colors, with 2 strands of each color.
Follow the directions for the first Snake Around the Pole, but twist the knot around 7 other strings instead of only 1.
Tighten each knot by pulling it toward the top. Repeat for as long as you want that color, then switch to the next. Continue until you’re done. Knot to finish.

TIE-DYE YOUR CLOTHING White 100% cotton T-shirt/ Scarf Clothing Dye - choose a colour! Salt (1 cup per dye colour) Rubber bands Coins or marbles Spray bottles A squirt bottle Disposable Gloves Plastic bags - with NO holes.
Tie-dying became popular during the hippie culture in the 1970's. Made famous by popular singers like Janis Joplin, Tie-dying is an easy and fun way to be creative with clothes! Before during, set up a station outside, and mix the dye's up according to their instructions. Make sure each dye has a 1 cup salt mixed in as well. After dying, leave the ties in and leave it to set overnight. Take the elastic bands, etc, off when rinsing.
Marbled tie-dye • Tie It
Place the shirt on top of a marble or coin, pinch it through the shirt layers, and twist. Secure it in place with a rubber band.
50
Repeat this process all around the shirt with several more marbles -- the more you use and the tighter you twist them, the more interesting your patterns will be.
• Dye It
Fill the bottles with the individually prepared dye baths and thoroughly spray your T-shirt. Hold the bottle close for more concentrated colors and farther away for more subtle coloring.
Knotted tie-dye • Tie It
Grab a small section of the shirt, both front and back layers, and twist it as tightly as possible. Fold over the tip of the twist and fasten it snugly with a rubber band.
Make different-size twists all over your shirt, or keep them consistent and in a pattern to get results similar to the T-shirt above.
• Dye It
Fill the bottles with the individually prepared dye baths and squeeze drops onto your shirt. If you use this technique on a knotted or marbled shirt, try squeezing one color onto and around each of the tied sections.
Twist & Dunk tie-dye • Tie It
Lay the shirt on a flat surface and decide where you want your design center to be. Pinch this up and fasten it tightly with a rubber band one inch from the top. Continue fastening the shirt with rubber bands in 2 to 3 cm sections.
• Dye It
Fill 2 small buckets with your prepared dye baths. If you want to use just one color, dunk your whole shirt into that bucket and let it soak for 5 minutes.
If you want a multicolored design, dunk the chosen sections of the shirt in the dye and hold it there for 3 to 5 minutes. The longer it soaks, the more vibrant the results.

Growing vegetables
You need to plant vegetables in accordance with the seasons, as most vegetables need a particular climate to grow well. You can get small seedlings quite cheap from your local gardening store. Its important that you water your new plants regularly, around once a day to begin with. Fertiliser will also help, and you are best to ask your local garden store for the most appropriate type. For successful vegetables, the following are very important: • Soil : highly nutritious, so your vegetables become nutritious! • Space: so they are able to grow extra big. • Fertilizer: try and find an organic one - e.g. Horse/sheep manure • Pest Control: put out snail bait, and use a spray to control butterflies. • Weed Control: don't get them confused with the veges though! • Water: everyday! Buy a sprinkler and it will save you time.

Gardening
FOR ALL SEASONS WINTER
June 1 - August 31
• Cauliflower or broccoli; These can grow all year round, but are good in
winter as the rain will water them for you! Make sure you keep an eye out for snails, as they hide in the big leaves when the plans get mature.
• Onions; One of the easiest plants to grow. You can pretty much plant the
seedlings and leave them to grow, as you won’t need to water them as much due to the extra rain in winter.
• Radishes; are an interesting vege, good for salads. Their fun to grow, as
you simply sew the seeds, and wait till the top plants (green leaves) grow nice and big. Then when you begin to see the top of the radish emerge from the soil, you can choose to pull them out.
SPRING
September 1 - November 31
• Spring Onions; You can grow spring onions from seeds or seedling from
your garden store. They will take a few months to grow to the right size, but are pretty easy to grow.
• Tomatoes: You need to get some seedlings from your local garden store,
and there are a huge range of types and sizes. Once you have planted the seedlings, you will need to ensure you water them regularly and keep track of the plants size, and they may need a stake to hold the plant up when it begins to fruit. The plant will also react well to regular fertilizer, and may bear more and sweeter tomatoes as a result.

What's Best For When?
SUMMER
December 1 - February 28/29
• Lettuce; Great for the summer salads. Plant the seedlings in good, fertilised soil. Make sure you water them regularly, and ensure you control snails. You can get a huge range of lettuces, and can pick from the garden whenever you need a quick side salad.
• Potatoes; You will need a large separate garden or barrel for potatoes,
and also a few ‘seed’ potatoes from your local garden centre. Use good, fertilized soil. You need to dig a deep trench in your garden or barrel to plant the seed potatoes, and then cover with soil. You need to keep your potatoes well watered. It may take a while for the potato plant to grow, but that's not to worry. You will have to wait for around 3-4 months till you can harvest.
AUTUMN
March 1 - May 31
• Leeks; Good for the soup season! Leaks are a type of onion, and you eat
the white bit, at the bottom of the stem. To ensure you get the most of this, mound up dirt around the base of the leak as it grows! This will ensure you get a large white stem.
• Carrots; Plant in Autumn or winter! A hardy, easy to grow vegetable. Sew
the seeds, and the n water regularly. The first few green leaves will look like grass, so don’t pull them out thinking they are weeds! They should take around 3 weeks to grow, and you can harvest them when you begin to see the orange tops emerge from the soil.
• Beetroot; Really easy to grow. Sew the seeds, and water well. Leave to grow like carrots or radish, and harvest when you see the purple heads emerge from the soil (this will take up to 8 weeks).
