Challenge the Pros

Open Team Tournaments

Tuesday, May 15, 2012 The Grande Ballroom Amateurs and spectators stop by the Grande Ballroom to challenge the pros and help raise money supporting US junior players. CSI sponsored several top finishers at the 2011 US Junior National Championships many of whom play in the BCAPL National Championships. We anticipate several of our top juniors to also be available for challenges in 2012. The funds raised will go to North American junior champions to prepare for next year’s world championship.

Thursday - Friday May 17-18, 2012 Qualified teams that exit early from the Open Team Division will be eligible to participate in a Second Chance Team tournament on Thursday, May 17, 2012. The entry fee is $50 per team and paid on site. CASH ONLY! Any participating teams must be out of the money.

NEW Action Area

Mini Tournaments

Moved Location! With the new facility layout changes at the Riviera Hotel & Casino, we needed to move the “action” tables. However there will still be “action” tables available within the event area. Locations will be posted at the BCAPL National Championships venue.

The Second Chance Team tournaments will be 4 person teams and are single elimination. All teams must use players from their original team roster.

Between matches, keep your game warm in the Mini Tournament room – the Royale Pavilion (the back ballroom). Entry fees and races will vary. You must be a BCAPL or USAPL member to play. These events will be announced over the P.A. system. It’s a great way to keep the competitive juices flowing, have fun and win extra cash!

Best Dressed Competition

Riviera Beer Bash Tuesday, May 15, 2012 Grande Ballroom A Beer & Chips Bash will welcome all BCAPL and USAPL members from 6-8 pm Tuesday night, May 15, courtesy of the Riviera Hotel & Casino. Join us in the Grande Ballroom just before the Challenge the Pros fund-raiser. See you there!

The school is now located on the 2nd floor in the stunning Skybox section. Take the stairs or elevator next to the BCAPL Tournament Registration desk and follow the signs. Led by Randy Goettlicher, one of the first four BCA Master Instructors in the US, the team at Cue Tech Pool School has helped train and fine tune player’s games since 1982.

BCAPL National Championships: At How to Enter:

Players are able to enter all divisions of the BCA Pool League National Championships in three ways: •

Fax a signed and completed entry form to CSI at (702) 719-7667 • Mail a signed and completed entry form to the CSI office at 2041 Pabco Road, Henderson, Nevada 89011 • Online at the CueSports Tournament System (CTS) (www.ctsondemand.com) Copies of the 8-Ball Singles, Scotch Doubles, Men’s /Mixed Open, Advanced and Trophy Teams, Women’s Open, Advanced/Master and Trophy Teams are on pages 13-16 of this event program. To view and download entry forms for all divisions of the 36th BCAPL National Championships visit www.playbca.com. POLICY CHANGE: It is no longer required that only League Operators submit team entries. Teams may now submit their entry forms directly to the BCA Pool League national office. All entry forms submitted must be complete and legible. Any entry form that is not filled out properly or is illegible may be returned. Team entries must be submitted by either the League Operator or the Team Captain. Changes to team rosters may be made by the team captain on-site during Check-In, but are subject to verification and require complete information, including the substitute’s address and league statistics.

Tournament Eligibility:

League Members: Players who have

played in a minimum of eight (8) full regularly scheduled BCAPL league matches in the same division during a single sanctioned session and are deemed an active player by the League Operator, are eligible to play in the 36th BCAPL National Championships. Player Members: Players whose Player Membership dues are current as of May 11, 2012 are eligible to play in the 2012 BCAPL National Championships. All players must be able to show a picture ID and a valid U.S. Social Security Number or a Canadian Social Insurance Number (see detailed non-U.S. payout procedures on page 19).

Event Eligibility:

Event eligibility is summarized in the Team and Scotch Doubles chart on page 17 and the Player and Event Classification chart on page 18. To determine if a player is eligible to participate in a specific event, find their player classification in the top row. The events they are eligible for are listed in the column below the classification. Age requirements: For senior divisions, players must have reached the cut-off age by May 11, 2012. Advanced, Master and Grand Master status supersedes Senior status. The following are the cut off ages by division: • Women’s Seniors Singles - 50 • Men’s Seniors - 55 Men’s Super Seniors - 65 SINGLES: Because of scheduling considerations, no player may play in more than one 8-Ball singles event.

A Glance

TEAMS: Because of scheduling considerations, no player may play on more than one team or in more than one 8-Ball team event. Men’s / Mixed Open, Advanced and Master Teams may be made up of any combination of male and female players. Women’s Teams are restricted to female players. (see page 17 for details on all Teams division criteria). Trophy Teams: Must meet the same original player, league system and eight week participation requirements as Open Teams. Advanced, Master and Grand Master players are not eligible. Trophy Team Prizes: Plaques will be awarded to the top 8 Men’s / Mixed Trophy Teams and top 3 Women’s Trophy Teams. USA Pool League:

Strong and Growing

USAPL Takes Flight Growing East, West and in the Heartland

The USAPL started its second full year as a national league in 2011. The growth of the league across the United States has been steady and strong. Between January 2011 to December 2011, the USAPL grew by 50% in sanctioned players. There are currently 22 active USAPL leagues from coast to coast. Several new territories started this year taking their region by storm. The New England and Boston USAPL leagues have 8-Ball, 9-Ball and a separate Women’s division. Another new USAPL territory that took off rapidly is the Rocky Mountain USAPL. Managed by well known pool personality and coach, Samm Diep-Vidal. Denver, Colorado players are embracing the new league system. The Rocky Mountain USAPL has both 8-Ball and 9-Ball divisions as well as the rare opportuinty to be dual sanctioned with the BCAPL.

In 2011, Florida, one of the states that the USAPL took root two years ago, has grown from 2 to 4 active USAPL territories including the Ocala Region, the Space Coast area, Tampa Bay and Orlando. The Oklahoma City USAPL, managed by Gary Medley, started one and a half years ago and has grown to over 250 players. Three divisions are played on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. In January 2012 a second USAPL league is scheduled to start in Stillwater, OK. Managed by Ray Brace, the Stillwater USAPL already has 9 teams committed to the first division on Wednesday night.

The Birmingham USAPL was one of the first USAPL territories launched in the US two years ago. Growth in 2011 included the addition of a 9-Ball division with 8 teams. Other divisions include Monday night 8-Ball. The Birmingham USAPL is managed by Mike Cantanese. New leagues have been forming and will be starting up this spring in: Washington state and Oregon. For more information about current USAPL leagues or if interested in applying to be a USAPL territory manager visit www.playusapool.com or email Mark Estes at marke@playcsipool.com

CueSports International (CSI) More Choices For All Players In the beginning – CueSports International (CSI) was founded in 2004 to administer the BCA Pool League, and to create “more choices for all players,” the mission to which CSI has been fully dedicated. Since then, CSI has quietly developed a major infrastructure for the support and growth of pool events through innovative, state of the art products and services

texting and email notifications were introduced to tell players when pool tables became available for their matches.

CueSports Tournament System (CTS) www.ctsondemand.com – A state of the art tournament management software system, the CueSports Tournament System (CTS), was developed for the BCAPL National Championships, and is now used for tournaments of all kinds, including the US Bar Table Championships, the Western BCAPL Regional Championships, the US Open 10-Ball Championship and a growing number of BCAPL state and regional events.

Independent Pool Tournaments – CSI owns and produces a growing number of advanced, semi-pro, and professional pool tournaments, which require no league affiliation. • CSI CEO Mark Griffin launched the Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament (the “Swanee”) in 1996 to honor the late great “Gentle Giant,” Jay Swanson. Mark continues to fund and personally direct the tournament. The 16th Annual Swanee is February 4-5, 2012 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. • CSI took over production of the US Bar Table Championships in Reno, Nevada in 2007, and ensures the future of the event with Bad Boys Billiard Productions for direction, the CueSports Tournament System for live on-line tournament charts, and the best of Diamond, Aramith, and Simonis products for billiard equipment. The 19th Annual US Bar Table Championships is February 13-19, 2012 at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada. • CSI resurrected the US Open One Pocket Tournament in CSI’s inaugural year (2004). The 13th US Open One Pocket Championship will be staged May 10-13 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. • CSI launched the US Open 10-Ball Championship in November, 2007 in Louisville, Kentucky. The 2012 edition will be staged May 14-19, during the 36th Annual BCAPL National Championships at the Riviera in Las Vegas. The event will host a stellar field of 96 of the finest pool players on the planet, and starts immediately following the US Open One Pocket Championship.

The live on-line charts feature of the CTS is extremely popular among players, fans, and enthusiasts. During the 2010 championships, cell phone

USA Pool League (USAPL) – CSI launched the new USA Pool League (USAPL) in selected markets across the USA. The USA Pool League is very

BCA Pool League (BCAPL) – The first order of business was the preservation of the BCA Pool League (BCAPL). A core staff with a combined history of over 200 years in the industry was assembled. A state of the art computer hardware and software system was installed. The BCAPL league management software system, called LeagueSys, was contracted. A custom database was developed to integrate with LeagueSys and our web sites. A support structure for state and regional events was created. And, the league bible, the Official Rules of the BCA Pool League, was developed. Throughout the initial years, the official web site, playbca.com, was expanded to communicate all facets of the BCA Pool League to our sport and our industry. A leading attraction is the annual BCAPL National Championships, the subject of this newsletter.

24

different from the BCAPL. It uses a fully automated national rating system in a match play format, offers protected league territories to USAPL Managers and secures local prize funds. The USA Pool League utilizes the proven Fairplay handicapping software, which is quickly becoming the industry standard for singles and team play. CSI web site development – CSI now has three distinct web sites, developed to support all CSI products. www. playbca.com continues to cover all of the BCA Pool League, plus some independent events listed under Events/ UPCOMING EVENTS. www.playusapool.com was developed to support the new USA Pool League. www.playcsipool.com was designed to cover the non-league affiliated CSI products, including the independent professional events produced by CSI. The Rio in 2013 – The BCAPL National Championships will enjoy two major changes for next year. In 2013, the “Greatest Pool Tournament in the World” will move from May to July … and will walk the welcome mat at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The National Championships have outgrown the space at the Riviera Hotel & Casino. The 2012 (36th) BCAPL National Championships, scheduled May 9-20, 2012, will be the last year the event will be held at the Riviera. CSI thanks the Riviera for hosting the championships for the past 18 years. The relocation to the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino is scheduled for July 17-27, 2013. The move will allow the BCAPL to expand both the amateur nationals and the CSI professional tournaments. The date and venue changes will provide more accommodations and more pool tables, so that more players, families, and friends can enjoy an even richer experience at the new venue.

Moving to the Rio ~ Q & A Q. What are the dates in 2013? A. The 2013 BCAPL National Championships will be held Wednesday, July 17 to Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Rio. Q. What about 2014 and beyond? A. The 2014 nationals will be held July 16-26, 2014 at the Rio. We expect future years to be held at the Rio also. Q. Why did you change the dates to July? A. The July dates are generally better for all: participants, families and employers, local leagues, host locations, and League Operators. • • • • • •

Starting in 2013, local BCA Pool Leagues can play longer spring sessions – all the way to the end of May. BCAPL players and teams will be able to play in more state, provincial, and regional tournaments during March, April, May, and even June, and still be able to travel to nationals. A longer spring session allows more time for players to qualify for nationals. It also gives players, teams, League Operators, and the BCAPL more time to enter and certify national entries. Many BCAPL leagues are dual sanctioned with VNEA, and now players can participate in more state, regional, and national championships for both BCAPL and VNEA. Survey respondents said that our perennial interference with Mother’s Day was a problem, especially for women players that are mothers. Last, but not least – many of our survey respondents said that July is much better than May for time away from work and home, especially for those who have school age children.

While July may not be an ideal month for some people, the overwhelming majority of participants and league supporters do benefit. This move is long overdue, and we again thank the players who participated in our survey. Q. Will the BCAPL league year end on July 31, when the nationals move to July in 2013? A. The BCAPL league year will not change. The qualifying league year will end May 31, and the new league year will begin June 1, as always. The May 31 deadline will allow players and teams an extra 6 to 7 weeks to qualify for the championships through league play and still meet the late entry deadline. More time will also be available for League Operators and CSI to process entries and certify eligibility. II

Q. What will the room rates be? A. Room rates will be finalized about one year in advance of the event, but rest assured that the average room rate will be similar to other large pool and dart tournaments. Q. Are there any resort fees? A. No. Caesars properties do not charge hidden room fees, such as resort fees. Q. Will we have to pay extra for a third and fourth person staying in the room. A. No. Room rates in the BCAPL group room block will be the same, whether the reservation is single, double, triple, or quad.

Q. Why do I see rooms at the Rio for $269 or more on some weekends? A. Regular open room rates in Las Vegas depend on supply and demand, and our group rates will be better than the average room rates for the Rio, per our agreement. Do not be alarmed if you see Rio rates advertised in the $200 plus range at other times. The Riviera charges that much on certain busy weekends also. Las Vegas room rates dropped when the economy tanked in 2008, and have been edging up ever since. We will have to see what the next several months bring before we can make any announcements on the group room rates. Please stay tuned. Q. Will there be any special discount packages for Rio room guests? A. Yes. We have discussed a variety of discounts, such as 2 for 1 drink specials at Rio bars, etc. Discount packages are standard fare at Caesars properties, and ours will be finalized closer to the event. And, don’t forget the “Buffet of Buffets,” the “All Stage Pass,” and the “All Night Pass” packages below. Q. What does the Rio mean when they say it is an all-suite hotel? A. From the Rio web site: Every room is a suite at the Rio! The Rio hosts more than 2,500 suites, providing spectacular views of Las Vegas. Every suite offers more than 600 square feet of spacious luxury, including a separate dressing area, couch, 32inch TV, table with chairs, hair dryer, in-suite refrigerator, iron, ironing board and complimentary in-suite safe. Some regular suites have sleeper beds, and can comfortably accommodate 6 people.

Rio Q & A Continued Q. You say that the Rio is a Caesars property. What does that mean? A. The Rio is one of the 8 major hotel/casino properties operated by the parent corporation, known as Caesars Entertainment. The properties make joint promotions and discount packages available to hotel guests (see below). The Caesars Las Vegas hotel/ casinos are: Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino, Caesars Palace, Paris Las Vegas, Bally’s Las Vegas, Flamingo Las Vegas, Harrah’s Las Vegas, Imperial Palace, and Planet Hollywood. Q. What is the scoop on the all-access “Buffet of Buffets” pass? A. This is an all-access pass, valid for 24 hours, at any of the participating buffets in the Caesars properties. Currently, the pass includes the following buffets: Carnival World Buffet (Rio) , Lago Buffet (Caesars), Spice Market Buffet (Planet Hollywood), Le Village Buffet (Paris), Paradise Garden Buffet (Flamingo), Flavors Buffet (Harrah’s), and Emperor’s Buffet (Imperial Palace).

Q. I have heard that our dog can stay with us at the Rio. Is that true? A. Yes. The Rio has a program called Rio PetStay and they roll out the red carpet for traveling dogs. Q. How about the “All Stage Pass”? A. This is currently a $99 pass that provides access to any of the participating shows. Currently there are 20 shows participating. Q. Are there more packages that include the other Caesars hotels? A. Yes. There is currently an “All Night Pass,” which provides access to 7 nightclubs for $45: VooDoo Rooftop Nightclub (Rio), Pure Nightclub (Caesars), Chateau Nightclub & Gardens (Paris), Gallery Nightclub (Planet Hollywood), Pussycat Dolls Lounge (Caesars), Crown Nightclub (Rio), and Carnival Court (Harrah’s). Q. Caesars is in the center of the best area of the strip. How far is it from Rio to Caesars? A. The distance from the Rio entrance to Caesars is about .75 mile, the same or less than the distance from the Riviera to Wynn. The walk from the Rio entrance to the Palms is .5 miles. The Palms is one of the coolest spots in Vegas, with much to offer, including a terrific 14 cinema theatre, with IMAX. Q. How does the free shuttle to the strip work? A. The FREE shuttles leave from the west entrance of the casino, just outside of the Carnival World Buffet. They leave average 15-30 minutes from 10am to 1am daily, and run exclusively between three stops: Rio, Paris/Bally’s, and Harrahs. The Palms (.5 mile west of Rio) has free shuttle service too, with a schedule to the Fashion Show Mall (across from the Wynn) and the Forum Shops (connected to Caesars).
