Nancy O’Dell

About The Mary Pickford Award As America’s first international film star, legendary silent film actress Mary Pickford was also a founding member of the creative community we call Hollywood. Mary Pickford occupied a unique position as the first lady of film, and America’s Sweetheart, while forging ahead as a philanthropist and paving the way for other actresses and businesswomen. Pickford was one of the founding members of the Academy. The Academy's Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study was dedicated in honor of Mary Pickford in 2002. In consideration of her contributions to American cinema, the American Film Institute named Pickford 24th among the greatest female stars of all time. The coveted Mary Pickford Award is given to an honorable woman of the community or industry who has: n Demonstrated a commitment to the mentorship of women in the workplace. n Displayed innovative leadership or qualities of a pioneer in her chosen field. n Served as a model of pursuing a vision or challenge with tangible results. n Made significant contributions to community service. n Shown a commitment to excellence. Past honorees of The Mary Pickford Awards include such stars as Angie Dickenson, Marion Ross, Doris Roberts, Leeza Gibbons, Stefanie Powers, Cindy Williams, Lee Meriwether, Marlee Matlin, JoAnne Worley, Carol Channing, Debbie Reynolds, Judge Judy Sheindlin, Diane Ladd, and Nichelle Nichols.

Our Mary Pickford honoree Nancy O’Dell is an Emmy Award-winning entertainment journalist and producer with more than 20 years of experience. The Alliance for Women in Media honored O’Dell in 2013 with their esteemed Genii Award for Excellence in Television. Also in 2013, O’Dell was asked to host the highly-respected National Association of Broadcasters Luncheon. After her mother passed away in 2008 from complications related to ALS, O’Dell became a National Vice President of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and serves as the spokesperson for ALS.net. In 2009, MDA, O’Dell and O’Dell’s family formed a foundation in her mother’s name called Betty’s Battle: Fighting ALS. In 2002, O’Dell was inducted into the American Red Cross’s National Celebrity Cabinet and remains in that position today. She also acts as an international board member for Best Buddies, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. A TRUE HERO OF HOLLYWOOD

Donelle Dadigan Our HONOREE Donelle Dadigan grew up learning the importance of two life lessons helping shape lives of others and giving back to the community. “D.D.” is devoted to all things Hollywood.

Johnny Grant 1923 ~ 2008 Johnny Grant and Hollywood are synonymous. As Tinseltown’s Honorary Mayor, appointed for life by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, he was one of the community’s most enthusiastic supporters for more than 50 years. He served as the Chairman of the Walk of Fame Selection Committee for nearly 28 years and was on hand to induct more than 600 stars. Johnny received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on his birthday, May 9, 1980, for his contributions to Television and his involvement and support of the Hollywood community. When Hollywood Chamber officials invited Johnny to become Chair of the Walk of Fame, he embraced the chairmanship with his famous energy and quickly turned things around. He added the fifth category of “Live Theatre” to the Walk and solved the problem of running out of space on the Walk by starting a second row of stars. Over the next three decades, Johnny built the Walk into an iconic worldwide attraction. A master of sound bites, Johnny knew what the press wanted and he knew how to promote the Walk. When reporters complained about selections on the Walk of Fame, he would respond that this was not the Pulitzer Prize, and explained that it was a tourist attraction. When Gregory Peck’s star was stolen, Johnny said to report it to the police but to also send out a press release. In Hollywood, Johnny has a street named after him. He has an office building named in his honor as well as the main Hollywood Post Office. But he will always be identified most closely with the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

TOM KELLY JR

She is President and Founder of two not-for-profit organizations. The José Iturbi Foundation is dedicated to “popularizing classical music…. one note at time!”® And, the Hollywood Museum, now considered the official museum of Hollywood (designation bestowed by Hollywood’s Honorary Mayor Johnny Grant). As a philanthropist and lover of history, Donelle wanted to create something meaningful for the Hollywood community. The Hollywood Museum, located just steps from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is dedicated to the history and heritage of Hollywood and the entertainment industry. With 10,000 real show business treasures showcasing more than 100 years - from Hollywood’s humble beginnings to today’s blockbuster motion pictures, television shows and new digital platforms - the Hollywood Museum is home to the largest entertainment collection on public display, and is a ‘must see’ for visitors from around the world. Inspired by her godfather, concert-great classical pianist and conductor, José Iturbi, Donelle co-founded the José Iturbi Foundation dedicated to sharing and popularizing the wonders of classical arts and music with audiences around the world, including sponsoring blockbuster concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. For more than 20 years, Dadigan has been involved with community groups and charitable organizations in Hollywood and California. Today, Dadigan is co-chair of the Hollywood Historic Trust, a duty passed on from the late Johnny Grant; she sits on the Board of Directors of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and the Hollywood Police Activities League, among others. Additionally, she has served on the boards of service organizations in the Hollywood Community, including the Hollywood Business Improvement District, the LACER (Literacy, Arts, Culture, Education, Recreation) after school programs, Hollywood High School, and PATH (People Assisting the Homeless). Donelle’s impact on the Hollywood community has been recognized by numerous awards.

John Lyons Our HERO John Lyons spent the better part of 3 decades developing and operating a diverse assortment of entertainment venues prior to his arrival in Hollywood in 2001. Headquartered in Boston, MA, John and his brothers began the Lyons Group. Under that brand they opened 40+ venues covering the gamut from punk rock to fine dining, dance clubs to country bars, discotheques to bowling alleys. After launching the House of Blues in Cambridge, John went on the road for two years to expand the chain in such cities as New Orleans, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

While setting up the West Hollywood location in 1994, he became intrigued with Hollywood. John saw the area as a diamond in the rough that could be resuscitated with a bit of TLC. This idea percolated for a while and after a particularly brutal winter, John decided to make the leap and “go west.” Against the advice of all of the naysayers that said that Los Angeles would not support a large venue and that Hollywood was a risky location, he took over the Palace Theater on Vine St. After a substantial investment in the building, The Spider Club was launched followed shortly by the West coast installment of Avalon. In 2008, he opened Bardot.

and Distinguished Service Honoree

Donelle Dadigan Thank you for your continued commitment to the Hollywood community.

As a firm believer that a business can only be as healthy as the community it serves, John became actively involved in organizations that shared his desire to make Hollywood a better place. He has served on the boards of the Hollywood BID, Chamber of Commerce, and the Hollywood PAL. In addition to these organizations, John actively supports the LAPD/FD Memorial Foundations. John resides in Hollywood with his wife Amanda and his most ambitious undertaking to date, 9-yearold daughter Dani.

WISHNOW, ROSS, WARSAVSKY & COMPANY CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS CONGRATULATES PINK’S HOT DOGS FOR ADDING SO MUCH “FLAVOR” TO HOLLYWOOD LIFE FOR THE PAST 77 YEARS AND FOR RECEIVING THE HEROES OF HOLLYWOOD AWARD BY THE HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Our HERO Pink’s Hot Dogs is a 77-year-old landmark hot dog stand located at La Brea and Melrose in Hollywood. Pink’s was started in 1939 by Paul and Betty Pink with a pushcart they purchased for $50. The land on which the pushcart stood was leased for $15 per month; hot dogs at that time were 10 cents. In 1941, Paul and Betty acquired the land through a bank loan for $4,000. In 1946, Pink’s hot dog stand was built. Paul and Betty operated the hot dog stand until 1985 when they retired and turned over the business to their family: Richard, Gloria, and Beverly. Today, Pink’s attracts customers and tourists to Hollywood from around the globe. The hot dog stand is widely known for its unique atmosphere, variety of hot dogs, and Celebrity Wall of Fame. The dining room is famously filled with over 200 autographed photos of Hollywood celebrities who love Pink’s! Appearances in movies, television, the Food Network, the Travel Channel, and travel books about Los Angeles make Pink’s a top Hollywood destination. Pink’s brandishes the tagline “A Hollywood Legend Since 1939” in 15 locations including Las Vegas, San Diego, New York, Miami, Hawaii, and the Philippines. Beyond bringing attention to Hollywood, Pink’s Hot Dogs has a charitable program called “Chili Dogs for Charity” that generously donates hot dogs and services to local and national charities including the Concern Foundation and Planned Parenthood. Hollywood organizations that have benefited include the Hollywood Boys and Girls Club, the Hollywood Division Police Department, Hollywood Fire Department, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Hollywood High School.

Beatrice Girmala Our HERO Assistant Chief Beatrice Girmala is a 31-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). She exemplifies a lifelong dedication to public service in Hollywood and continues to be motivated by the men and women who are the first line of defense in preserving our values and freedoms in the public arena. In 1985, Assistant Chief Girmala proudly joined the LAPD. In 1988, a Field Training Officer position opened in Hollywood, and by 1997, she achieved the rank of Sergeant. She was inspired by the dedication of patrol officers who worked in challenging conditions, yet delivered quality and professional law enforcement services. In 1999, Assistant Chief Girmala returned to Hollywood first as a Field Sergeant, and then as an Assistant Watch Commander, Sergeant II. She was given the opportunity to work for then Captain and future Deputy Chief Mike Downing, whom she credits with formative on-the-job training. Projects included “Operation Neighborhood Enhancement,” “Project Restore Hollywood,” and “Homeless Outreach.” In 2003, she was promoted to Lieutenant. Continuing to climb the ranks, Assistant Chief Girmala completed Command Development School and was promoted to Captain in 2007. In 2008, she began her second assignment as the Patrol Commanding Officer in Hollywood. In 2013, she was promoted to Commander and then to Deputy Chief in 2015. In 2016, she was promoted to Assistant Chief and is now the Director, Office of Special Operations. Assistant Chief Girmala’s involvement in Hollywood has led to the creation of the Hollywood Entertainment District (HED) foot beat and the inauguration of LAPD’s first youth mentoring center for financially-challenged and gang-impacted areas. Her diversity of experiences and career-long efforts make her an invaluable figure in the Hollywood community. In 2003, Assistant Chief Girmala was recognized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as a “Woman of Distinction” for her work in Hollywood. She lives in Los Angeles with her daughter and credits her mother as an invaluable supporter and inspiration, as well.

Together we build healthier communities. At Kaiser Permanente, our commitment to well being goes beyond health care. We’re also committed to improving the communities we serve.

The goal of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation is to improve the quality of life in the community of Hollywood. We support and advance the educational, cultural and economic interests of the community by: n Raising funds by staging events such as the “All Hallow’s Eve” and the “Heroes of Hollywood” Awards. n The board researches and reviews grant applications, and one board member visits each organization to ensure the applications meet the Foundation’s requirements and the allocated funds are used accordingly. n Selected organizations are presented with a check at one of the Hollywood Chamber regularly scheduled events. We encourage applications from organizations that: n will use funds for specific purposes and tangible property rather than administrative services n are well-managed and use their resources effectively n collaborate with rather than compete with organizations n address the root causes of problems, rather than symptoms n make a significant contribution to the vitality of Hollywood n are 501(c)3 charitable organizations located in Hollywood n deliver services directly to those who need them

Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation Grant Recipients 2016-2017 Fiscal Year One of the unique features of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is its efforts to support local community non-profit organizations. As a 501c3 nonprofit association, contributions to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation are tax deductible. The Foundation holds two fundraising events annually – the Heroes of Hollywood Luncheon (formerly called the Women of Distinction Luncheon) and the All Hallows Eve Party at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. All net proceeds go to charity. Since its inception in 1996, the foundation has given out more than $836,000 in grants to Hollywood nonprofits, and this past year awarded $37,500 to the following organizations:
