2016

STATE OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CONFERENCE

Welcome from the Co-chairs

Sharon Keyser, Paramount Pictures Doug Troy, Trailer Park

Welcome to our fifth annual State of the Entertainment Industry Conference. As we created this conference, our goal has been to bring the Hollywood community, business/industry executives, and public officials together to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing California’s signature industry. Each year, the conference has grown - and this year is no exception. Television producer Vin Di Bona will serve as our emcee, assuring our program flows smoothly and on time! We’re delighted to have Councilman Mitch O’Farrell give us a Hollywood update. Senator Kevin DeLeon, President Pro Tempore of the California State Senate will offer a keynote address, and we’ll be joined by several other public officials. We have three exciting sessions in the morning, beginning with a Music Industry Spotlight. Zach Katz, President of U.S. Repertoire & Marketing for BMG, will share the latest music industry trends. A panel of experts will discuss the Global Entertainment Industry and how feature films and TV shows are achieving international success. Finally, we’ll get a progress report on the California film/television tax credits program from industry leaders. During lunch, we’ll honor Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, with our 2016 Commitment to California Award. Netflix – which soon moves to Hollywood – is breaking all the rules in content and distribution as it sets new standards for excellence in entertainment. We look forward to hearing Ted’s views on where the industry is going. A huge thank you to our committee and the many sponsors who made this conference possible. And, a very special thanks to Variety, our media partner whose team once again helped us assemble a first-rate program. Enjoy the Conference!

STATE OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CONFERENCE

Welcome from the Hollywood Chamber

Fariba Kalantari, DDS, Chair of the Board Leron Gubler, President & CEO For 95 years, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has been a strong advocate for the Entertainment Industry. When the Chamber was organized in 1921, the industry was still fledgling. No one could foresee then that it would become the economic powerhouse for our region. For a time, people took the industry for granted. No one thought the industry would be wooed by so many states and countries. We learned that we would have to work hard to compete. In fact, we created this State of the Entertainment Industry Conference five years ago with the intent of focusing attention on the threat to our signature industry. What a difference five years makes. Thanks to the work of so many, AB1839 passed the legislature. Now stages, studios, and other industry businesses are all operating at full capacity. And that means jobs – jobs that are local so our residents can stay home with their families. It adds up to a much healthier business and home climate. For Hollywood, it means the industry is moving home, creating jobs that will help to revitalize this historic community. We are looking forward to seeing Netflix and Viacom move in soon. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who worked to make this conference possible – and especially to Variety, our media partner, and to the Hollywood Museum in the Historic Max Factor Building, who have been sponsors since the beginning. We thank those who have spent countless hours working on this conference, and we thank our panelists and speakers for taking time out of their busy schedules to participate. And of course, we thank YOU for taking the time to attend and show your support of our efforts to advance our Entertainment Industry.
