The 216-room, 16-story hotel is hard to miss and will be a new landmark on the Hollywood skyline. “So far, the guest feedback has been amazing,” said Ashley Gochnauer, general manager of the property. “People seem to really like the hotel, especially business travelers, who seem pleased that it has less of a party vibe.” She noted that guests especially seem to like the views. here may be no more thorny issue to deal with in Hollywood than access to the Hollywood Sign. As the most important landmark in Southern California and an international icon, it is easy to understand why tourists and Angelenos would be drawn to the Sign. At the same time, it is easy to understand why residents in the neighborhoods under the Sign can get irritated by the disruption to their lives caused by the sheer numbers of constant visitors passing through their streets. And of course matters are even more complicated when these issues impact numerous different neighborhoods as well as Griffith Park, which serves so many different constituencies. To make solutions even more difficult, there is not unanimity in the neighborhoods on a course of action. While we don’t Recently, the City closed off one access point have any into Griffith Park and to the Hollywood Sign at the top of Beachwood Drive to satisfy one immediate group of residents, only to be sued by another answers, it doesn’t group that wanted to keep the access points hurt for us to take open. Councilmember David Ryu has commissioned a study to look at mobility issues in the a look at this areas surrounding Griffith Park. We will deficomplicated nitely be interested in what the study reveals and any solutions proposed. challenge. I have long felt that the Chamber should see where it can assist in these matters and so have formed a Hollywood Hills Mobility Task Force to explore things that can be done to ease or resolve the issues. While we don’t have any immediate answers, it doesn’t hurt for us to take a look at this complicated challenge. I remain convinced that the best way to reduce the number of visitors going into the residential neighborhoods is to provide a viable alternative that gives the public the access that is desired. And by “viable” I mean access that would be close enough for a good view and easier to use (such as parking, etc.). Imagine if there were a Hollywood Sign visitors center with a movie about the Sign, etc. I believe it would be very popular with visitors. Where such a center could be located is the hard part, but of course if it were easy, this would already have been done! And so we are seeking solutions. If you have any ideas, please share them with us. You can email me at jeff@hollywoodhotel.net or our President & CEO at leron@hollywoodchamber.net. We hope to hear from you!!

“Everything is open to the public, with the exception of the pool deck on the 5th floor,” she added. In order to access that area, a non-hotel guest would need to rent one of the six cabanas on that level. The interior designer for the hotel is Ave Bradley, the creative director and senior vice president of design for Kimpton Hotels. Gochnauer said that typically she partners with a design firm, but she wanted to design this hotel herself as her “love letter” to the Hollywood Hills. She wanted it light and airy and wanted it to have a true living room feel. She collected all of the furniture over the years and then assembled everything. “She wanted the whole hotel to be comfortable and wanted people to sink-in and stay awhile,” commented Gochnauer. “She wanted it to be a space utilized equally by hotel guests and locals. The design is meant to inspire that. She wanted to bring in the neighbors and create good energy.” The hotel general manager has been with the Everly team since January, but has been with Kimpton Hotels for seven years, having also worked for their other two local hotels – the Palomar in Beverly Hills and the Hotel Wilshire in the Miracle Mile. She has lived in Hollywood for the past five years, only one block away from the Everly, and loves it – especially her three-minute walking commute. She said that Kimpton is the pioneer for boutique hotels, having been founded in 1981. Back then, all hotels followed the big box concept. There are 65 Kimptons worldwide, with several more in the pipeline. They just opened hotels on Grand Cayman Island and in Amsterdam. Another hotel is scheduled to open in West Hollywood in October. The firm was acquired two years ago by IHG Hotels, which has more of a global reach and which has launched the international expansion. Other features of the Everly include 5,000-sq.ft. of traditional meeting rooms. The largest meeting room can accommodate 160 people for a sit-down meal or 200 for a stand-up reception.
The hotel boasts spacious hangouts, comfortable decor, and rooftop swimming pool.
The hotel restaurant, Jane Q, has a name that is a play off the more traditional John Q. Guests are able to order their menu at a counter and then have it delivered to their tables. Jane Q is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. The Ever Bar hours are 3 p.m. to
midnight Mondays through Fridays. On weekends, Ever Bar remains open until 2 a.m. The hotel also provides a fitness center. Parking is available by valet. CHAMBER BUSINESS BENEFIT creating a strong economy

esides the new Kimpton Everly Hotel, another hotel opened its doors in Hollywood in August – the new 112-room Hampton Inn & Suites Los Angeles/Hollywood, located at 1133 North Vine Street. Located in the heart of Hollywood, the hotel is within walking distance to many Hollywood shops and attractions. Together with the new Dream Hotel that opened in July and the Everly, the three hotels add more than 500 rooms to the Hollywood market. “We are thrilled to be among the historic Hollywood community as the newest Hilton hotel to the area in more than 10 years,” said Richard Engelhard, general manager. We strive to offer consistent and quality accommodations with value-added amenities such as our complimentary hot breakfast buffet.” Owned by ESPY Management, LLC and managed by Evolution Hospitality, Hampton Inn & Suites Los Angeles/Hollywood offers guests complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, a state-of-the art fitness center, access to a 24-hour business center, a coffee shop (which is expected to open soon) and an outdoor pool. The new hotel is conveniently located on Vine Street between Sunset and Santa Monica Blvds. It replaces a former 70-room Vagabond Inn that was previously located on the site. There will be 40 employees at the hotel. Hampton Inn by Hilton and Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton, serve value conscious and quality-driven travelers with more than 2,275 properties with nearly 230,000 rooms in 18 countries and territories. City Seeks to Create Linkage Fee for Housing
W
ith Los Angeles facing one of the worst housing crises in the nation, the City of Los Angeles is considering an Affordable Housing Linkage Fee proposed by Mayor Garcetti to raise money to build more affordable housing within the City. The Board of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce expressed concerns at its July meeting about the proposal, which is moving fairly quickly through the approval process. What is proposed is a fee of $5 per square foot for commercial (non-residential) new construction and $12 a square foot for residential construction. The fee would be adjusted annually according to the change in the Consumer Price Index. Fees would be collected at the time a building permit is issued. A $12 fee on a 1,000-sq.ft. residence would add $12,000 to the cost of a unit. Estimates are that the fee has the potential to generate between $75 and $92-million per year. Even under the most optimistic forecast, the linkage fee would produce no more than 613 units annually. Other cities that have implemented linkage fees have gained no more than 100 units per year. Concerns by the Chamber were raised as to whether the small number of
affordable units that might be gained balanced the negative impacts caused by a linkage fee. Chamber directors noted that any additional fee tacked onto new projects would be passed on to either the renters or buyers of homes. They felt the relatively small number of units that could be built did not justify raising prices on projects that are already expensive. Board member Jerry Neuman of Liner Law said, “A new tax on development will only result in increasing the affordability gap by potentially providing for low income housing at the expense of workforce and middle market rents, because the additional costs will have to be borne by the other units in the system. This will only force those rents up.” He said there would also be an impact on commercial buildings where markets like Hollywood are finally seeing a resurgence in office development and job growth. He feared that the market would be hindered by unassociated costs to support low income housing development as opposed to workforce housing which is desperately needed.
David Simon of Kilroy Realty said that the City already gets a lot of fees for affordable housing that come through community benefits negotiations with developers. He said it would almost amount to “double-dipping” for the City to charge a linkage fee on top of the amounts that have already been negotiated with developers. The Chamber board noted that they are very supportive of building more affordable housing in the City, but felt this proposal was not the answer to the City’s affordable housing woes. They urged the City to slow down the process and to look at the broader picture of how to incentivize the building of more affordable housing. One local developer, Ed Miller of Cal Coast Development, suggested a phase-in of any proposed linkage fees. “Perhaps the fee could be phased in over a period of three to five years, which would give some relief to developers who have existing sites, which would give some time for price adjustments to be reflected in the cost of land to accommodate Measure JJJ or linkage fees,” he suggested.

n Wednesday, August 9th, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Committee kicked off its first Speaker Series event, which featured Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez. He joined members of the health and wellness community at the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center to discuss the future of healthcare in California and the effects that potential health policy may have on the Hollywood community. Hernandez represents the 22nd Senate District, which encompasses the cities and communities of the San Gabriel Valley. He is also a practicing optometrist and a businessman in his hometown of La Puente. It was this unique background as a policymaker, physician, and businessman that made Senator Hernandez the perfect speaker to launch this new series. During his speech, Senator Hernandez discussed important healthcare-related issues, such as how California has best prepared itself if the Affordable Healthcare Act were repealed and the feasibility of California introducing a “single payer” healthcare system. This was followed by a 20 minute Q&A, where guests were given the opportunity to ask the Senator questions important to them and the Hollywood community. “It was so helpful and informative to hear Senator Hernandez provide a real-time update and incisive analysis on the issues affecting the healthcare debate and where California stands on the future of the Affordable Care Act,” said Chamber member and attendee Kathleen Felesina, Director of Fund Development at Uplift Family Services at Hollygrove. The Healthcare Committee, which is co-chaired by Hedyeh Khalili and Manuel Rodriguez, plans to hold a Speaker Series event every quarter. The committee will be hosting its next event towards the end of the year, Members interested in joining the planning committee may contact the Chamber Government Relations Coordinator, Jacob Jauregui at jacob@hollywoodchamber.net.
ast month, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors voted to oppose Assembly Bill 1250. The bill would prohibit counties from contracting out personal services currently or customarily performed by that county’s employees. The only exception would be if the board of supervisors can clearly demonstrate the contract will result in actual cost savings for the duration of the contract, as compared with the county’s actual costs of providing the same services. The recommendation from the Legislative Action Committee stated that “counties serve their residents with a vast array of services, using a variety of tools and arrangements. State statutes and federal laws already limit their contracting out efforts. AB 1250 adds even more restrictions and administrative costs, raising costs without boosting real accountability.” The Hollywood Chamber joins the California Chamber of Commerce, California State Association of Counties, and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, in opposing the bill. AB 1250, which had previously passed the Assembly, has been placed in the suspense file by the Senate Appropriations Committee, which places bills that would have a significant fiscal impact on hold.
Hollywood Chamber Joins Coalition to Support Prescription Drug Transparency State Legislation
T
he Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has joined the coalition of supporters for Senate Bill 17, which would bring much needed transparency and accountability to the pricing of prescription drugs in California. Authored by Senator Dr. Ed Hernandez, it would fundamentally require health plans and insurers to report specified information related to prescription drug pricing to the California Department of Insurance and Department of Managed Health Care. This bill would take the necessary steps in ensuring that consumers are given prior notice by pharmaceutical companies before raising prices and asks health plans to report the proportion of premiums spent on prescription drugs. Skyrocketing prescription drug prices drastically affect the affordability and accessibility for many Californians. “SB 17 helps shine a light into the shadows of out-of-control drug prices. Patients who need access to a particular drug don’t have the option to forgo treatment or find another option when the price gets too high,” said Senator Hernandez. “They are forced to choose between paying for their prescriptions or paying their mortgage – and the public has had enough.” Dr. Hernandez’s comments reflect the Chamber’s reasoning for supporting this bill and his experience as a physician gives him the needed perspective as the author to ensure its overall success. The bill has passed the Senate and is awaiting passage in the Assembly.

fter an absence of four years, holiday decorations and lights will be returning to Hollywood Boulevard, thanks to a unique partnership between the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Hollywood Entertainment District BID. “We are so pleased that this has worked out,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. “There has been a lot of feedback from disappointed visitors in recent years who came to Hollywood expecting to see decorations. This will bring back the cheer to the holiday season.” Gubler noted that one of the barriers to new decorations has been the high cost associated with installing quality decorations. By the Chamber and BID joining together, it has been possible to make it work financially. The Chamber has agreed to cover the initial investment in the decorations, while the BID will maintain and handle the annual installation of the decorations. The organizations are contracting with St. Nick’s Commercial Design & Décor for the decorations. The firm has extensive experience in Southern California with holiday decorations – including such places as Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles and Westwood. Rather than spreading the decorations too sparsely along the street, the decorations will be installed at the two major intersections along Hollywood Blvd. to create a better visual impact, one block east and west of Highland Ave. and Vine Street. Those areas will also offer greater visibility since the view is not blocked by the branches of ficus trees. The project scope will include wrapping 54 palm trees at the two intersections (both Mexican Fan Palms and Canary Island Date Palms) with LED warm-white mini- lights at a length of approximately 25 ft. per tree. Each tree will also have two RGB color changing lights installed under the crown of the tree to light up the palm fronds. In addition, a total of 27 pole-mounted, custom-designed holiday decorations will be manufactured and installed on the city light poles. The decorations will feature two stars with “ribbon” connecting them. They will feature carpet grass and sequins for daytime appeal and will be lit with twinkle lights in the evenings. Garland with red and silver ornaments wrapped around the poles will complete the decorations. Of special interest to the community is that the lighting on the palm trees will remain after the holiday season and will be maintained by the BID. The RGB color changing lights have the capability of being changed to different colors to celebrate various holidays throughout the year. “Having the trees lit throughout the year will add to the ambiance of the neighborhood,” said Gubler. We are pleased to have been able to work with the BID to make this happen in 2017. CHAMBER BUSINESS BENEFIT creating a strong economy hollywoodchamber.net n 9
