STATE OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CONFERENCE
Welcome from the Co-chairs Kristin Cavanaugh, Sony Pictures Entertainment Christina Derenthal, Paramount Pictures Welcome to our seventh annual State of the Entertainment Industry Conference! Our goal has always been to bring the Hollywood community, business and industry executives, and public officials together to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing California’s signature industry. Each year, the conference has grown – and this year is no exception. Television producer Vin Di Bona will once again serve as our emcee, assuring that our program flows smoothly and on time with a dash of his signature humor! We’re honored to have Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell give us a Hollywood update and delighted that Kevin James is joining us, representing the Mayor’s Office of Film and Television Production. We have several exciting sessions today, beginning with a Keynote Spotlight Conversation, featuring two legends from the Music Industry – Sir Lucian Grainge and Irving Azoff. They will be interviewed by late night host James Corden. Some of the hottest developments in the Industry today involve Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. We will have a panel of top experts inform us on the latest in the VR/AR field and what we can expect in the future. Our panel includes Vicki Dobbs Beck from Lucasfilm, Karen Dufilho from Google Spotlight Stories, Ted Schilowitz from Paramount Pictures, Vikash Sharma from AT&T, and Jake Zim from Sony. To tell us what the state of the Industry is in Southern California, we are pleased to have back with us Paul Audley from FilmL.A. and Amy Lemisch of the California Film Commission. We are looking forward to hearing the latest statistics on how production is faring in our region. This year, we are excited to present our new Vanguard Award to Issa Rae, an exciting and talented content creator, as we recognize breakout creative talent in the Entertainment Industry. To top it all off, we are thrilled to present our annual Commitment to California Award to Chuck Lorre, the producer of such popular television shows as The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. We offer an enormous thank you to our committee and to the many sponsors who have made this conference possible. And, of course, we extend a very special thank you to Variety, our media partner, whose team once again helped us assemble a top-notch program. Enjoy the Conference!
Paramount Pictures Proudly Supports the 2018 State of the Entertainment Industry Conference and warmly congratulates today’s honorees
2018
STATE OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CONFERENCE
Welcome from the Hollywood Chamber Donelle Dadigan, Chair of the Board Leron Gubler, President & CEO For 97 years, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has been a strong advocate for the Entertainment Industry. When the Chamber was formed in 1921, the industry was still fledgling here. No one at that time could have foreseen that it would become the economic powerhouse for our region. For decades thereafter, Hollywood was on top of the world. No one thought that the industry would ever leave Hollywood or that it might be endangered. After all, it had been associated with Hollywood for most of its existence. But then, other states and countries started to woo production with film and television incentives. First the movies-of-the week left. That was followed by feature movie productions and finally television series. Suddenly, it became quite obvious that we were losing entertainment jobs by the thousands, and that there might not be an Industry much longer if we didn’t learn how to compete. Fortunately, Industry supporters pulled together and worked with our California legislature to craft film and television incentives that are working today. Now stages, studios and other industry businesses are all operating at near capacity. And that means jobs – jobs that are local so our industry workers can live at home with their families rather than commute to other states and countries. For Hollywood, it means the Industry is moving back home, creating jobs that will help to revitalize this historic community and a huge boost to the economy. This conference was created seven years ago with the intent of focusing attention on the threat that existed to our signature industry. This year, we will again provide an update on how the film and TV tax credits are working, but we will also look at so much more. Whether it is a discussion about the future of virtual reality and augmented reality, or an interview with legendary music icons, or honoring outstanding Industry figures, we will present another great conference filled with amazing content. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this conference possible! We could not have done it without your help! And now, sit back and enjoy the program!
