New Construction Keeps Hollywood Momentum Going

A

s new projects are shaping up in Hollywood, I get a lot of comments about how Downtown Hollywood is really beginning to come together. We have spoken for a long time about building a live-work urban village here, and so it is nice to be able to see the progress. Within the last month, I’ve attended two ground-breaking ceremonies, but there are several other new projects that are also under construction. The two project launches I attended were for the Dream at Tamarind South, a 32-unit infill project by the Strategic Legacy Investment Group at Tamarind and Fountain, and Essex Hollywood, a It is nice to witness the 200-unit mixed-use project near Sunset and Vine that will also see the restoragrowth of an urban tion of the historic Earl Carroll village. This project on Cahuenga south of Sunset will have a prominent view to the north. It is adjacent to Hollywood’s civic center and historic Fire Station 27. Construction is also underway on the Godfrey Hotel, being built at 1400 Cahuenga by the Oxford Capital Group out of Chicago. The hotel, which is just south of Sunset and across the street from the Rise, will have approximately 200 rooms. It is nice to witness the growth of an urban village. I am seeing more and more people in the neighborhood walking their dogs each morning and evening. People are lined up in Trader Joe’s. There are people filling the restaurants. Twenty-five years ago, we wouldn’t have dreamed of being where we are today. Of course, we still face challenges to get where we need to be. The growing homeless encampments are a serious concern, and in some places allowed to remain up 24 hours a day, even though they are supposed to be taken down by 6 a.m. daily. Street vendors are being allowed to sell whatever they want, wherever they want to. We are disappointed that the City has taken so long in enacting the regulations for street vending that were promised when they decriminalized street vending last February. Hearings have finally began. Now they need to expedite action. We have the momentum, but in order to continue to keep the progress going, both new and old residents and visitors need to feel safe walking our streets. The private sector has stepped up to the plate. Now we need the City to do its part.

The studio is on the border between Hollywood and Silver Lake and is in what was originally known as Edendale, where the industry first settled before moving to Hollywood. The studio was acquired by Jesse Rogg in 2013, and has undergone a restoration to bring back the original old Hollywood charm. It contains two stages totaling 25,000-sq.ft.

She noted that RED has been renovating all of its buildings and stages on the lot. In addition, the HVAC and other infrastructure systems throughout the lot have been replaced and upgraded. “As we continue to grow and evolve as a company, we see a bright future for the studio,” commented Cassella. “We look forward to continuing our service to the industry as we have for the past 103 years.”

TEAM Hollywood Discusses Arts Funding, Film Tax Credit Report

I

t has been a big year for California’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program 2.0, with over $2.4 billion in direct in-state spending in the last fiscal year, and TEAM Hollywood got the inside scoop. The Entertainment, Arts, and Media (TEAM Hollywood) Committee held its bi-monthly meeting in October, which featured presentations from Danielle Brazell, General Manager at the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Cultural Affairs, and Amy Lemisch, Executive Director of the California Film Commission. The luncheon was sponsored by the Stella Adler Art of Acting Studio, whose School Director, Johnny Yoder, was in attendance and gave the committee a brief overview of the school’s program. On behalf of the California Film Commission, Executive Director Amy Lemisch provided a general summary and presentation on the 2017 Tax Credit Program Progress Report. She explained that since the California Film Tax Credit was enacted in 2015, the program “has attracted or retained 100 film and television projects generating an estimated $3.7 billion in direct spending to the state.” To download and read the 40-page report, go to http://film.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/CA-Tax-Credit-

Progress-Report-09-2017-FINAL.pdf. Additionally, Brazell’s presentation focused on the programs and organizations funded by the Department of Cultural Affairs, which reinforce the department’s mission of fostering creativity, arts, and culture for the City of Los Angeles. She gave a brief overview on the Marketing and Development Division, which markets the City’s cultural events through publications, direct mail, and digital channels; the Public Art Division, which commissions and maintains public art and cultural services in the public realm; the Grant Administration Division, which funds more than 1200 programs and events; and the Community Arts and Performing Arts Division. Brazell’s presentation to the committee is part of an ongoing effort by the TEAM Hollywood Committee to advocate for increased funding to the arts at all levels of government. From hearing presentations from non-profit and government organizations involved in the arts, the Committee hopes to create a strategy to advance their advocacy efforts. Property Owner Survey Results Reveals a Distinct East Hollywood Identity

T

his summer, the East Hollywood Business Improvement District’s marketing team created and administered a survey for property owners and stakeholders, who were asked a series of questions regarding the physical boundaries and descriptive qualities of the area. This survey was distributed online, mailed, and conducted in person by volunteers who walked the district to ensure more accurate results. After more than a month, 126 individuals within the BID had taken the survey and the results were analyzed and presented to the board of governors at the BID’s July meeting. The results indicated that there is no consensus on the geographical boundaries of East Hollywood, giving the BID leeway to define it. Respondents were additionally instructed to rank several name options for the district, which 8 n hollywoodchamber.net

Community members were also asked to describe East Hollywood by using a series of adjectives and selecting all that apply. The top descriptors selected were “diverse,” “historic,” “central,” “artsy,” and “funky.” The results of the survey highlight a distinct identity for the district, one that is grounded in history but has developed into a funky and artsy area. With property owners, stakeholders, and community members in agreement over the district name remaining East Hollywood, the Board plans on developing a new logo and marketing campaign that embodies the spirit of East Hollywood. Chamber Dedicates Unique Board Room Table

T

he Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has dedicated what is undoubtedly the most unusual conference room table of any chamber of commerce in the country. The table, which features five terrazzo Walk of Fame stars and a black Corian top, was a two-year project and the brainchild of current Chamber Chair of the Board Jeff Zarrinnam. It can seat 28 people. “My idea was to bring the Hollywood Chamber brand to a higher level,” said Zarrinnam. “I thought it was important to use our trademarks, and now people attending meetings will definitely know where they are.” He noted that it is called the “star table” for a reason, as that is where the annual meeting is held to select honorees for the Walk of Fame. All of the financing for the table came through donations from Chamber members. “We are grateful to our many members who believed in Jeff’s vision and helped to make this table a reality,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler The table was designed by Katy Naghavi of Atelier Katayon Interior Design, who donated her services, and

Vine St on November 3rd during a nighttime ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Speakers included Mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, Victor González, and Eva Longoria. Accepting the star was Selena’s sister Suzette Quintanilla, the Quintanilla family and Chris Perez. A record crowd was in attendance that night, an astonishing 4,500 fans, surpassing the 4,000 fans that came to the star ceremony of mariachi singer, Vicente Fernandez. The late filmmaker George A. Romero was honored posthumously with the 2,621st star in the category of

Motion Pictures at 6604 Hollywood Blvd. on October 25th. Guests included Filmmaker Edgar Wright, make-up artist Greg Nicotero and actor Malcolm McDowell. Holiday Lights Return to Hollywood

A

fter an absence of four years, holiday lighting will return to Hollywood Blvd. for the 2017 holiday season, as a result of a joint effort between the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the Hollywood Property Owners Alliance (HPOA). The Chamber and HPOA have been working together on the project since the beginning of July. A request for proposals was sent out to lighting décor firms, and three companies were interviewed by a joint panel. Based on the interviews, the firm of St. Nick’s Commercial Design & Décor, based in Long Beach, was selected. Under the agreement between the Chamber and HPOA, the Chamber is making the initial investment in purchasing the decorations and the HPOA will handle the ongoing maintenance. The decorations will be installed one block either side of the intersections of Hollywood Blvd. with Vine Street and Highland Avenue and are expected to be up by Thanksgiving. As envisioned, the decorator will wrap 54 palm trees with permanent lighting. Each tree will also have two

RGB lamps installed under the crown of the tree to light up the palm fronds. In addition, 27 city light poles will have custom-made pole-mounted decorations with a star theme to be installed along with decorated commercial green garland with LED lights. The tree lights will be kept up all year, while the decorations will be removed after New Year’s Day. What is especially exciting is that the RGB lamps can be programmed with different colors, which will enable the HPOA to change the lighting to different colors depending on the holiday. “We believe the decorations will make an enormous difference along the Boulevard and will help to bring back a festive spirit,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. “We are pleased to have been able to work with the HPOA to bring back the decorations.” A lighting ceremony is being contemplated for the new decorations on Monday, November 20th at 6 p.m. at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. Join us to celebrate our new holiday decorations.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS SPOTLIGHT MEMBER NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION/#SAVELACOUGARS The National Wildlife Federation is a national non-profit environmental organization founded in 1936 focused on protecting wildlife, conserving habitat, and educating and inspiring Americans to take action to support our wildlife neighbors. In Los Angeles, a major focus of the National Wildlife Federation is to support the local mountain lion population, which is currently negatively impacted by limited habitat bisected by impassable freeways. The non-profit is working with partners to raise the funds necessary to build the largest wildlife crossing in the world over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills—a location scientists have identified as a critical linkage that will help reduce fatal collisions and increase the range and genetic diversity of mountain lions and other wildlife. Another important project they are focused on in Los Angeles is their Connecting LA project, increasing urban gardens that support the health of wildlife—and people. Called Gardens for Wildlife, their certification program encourages individuals, schools, and entire communities to pledge to support wildlife by ensuring their gardens have the food, water, cover and places that wildlife need. BECKER BOARDS Becker Boards is one of the largest privately-held billboard companies in Arizona. The company was founded by Mark Becker, a former real estate lawyer and developer. Shortly after its beginning, entrepreneur Joseph White joined the team. Over the last nine years, with development from the ground up, they’ve created an inventory in excess of two hundred static and digital billboards, wallscapes and supergraphic faces with many more in the pipeline. How did they do it? By being creative and flexible with their landlords, customers and municipalities. To accommodate the needs of their national advertisers, they’ve expanded from their start in Phoenix, into the Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco markets, with several more in the works. Becker Boards dedication, professionalism and high-profile inventory has allowed them to establish relationships with major local and national advertising agencies. These efforts have paid off as reflected by their occupancy levels, which are well above industry standards. In addition to focusing only on high quality locations, they take extra measures to ensure that their signs are impactful.

DAISY ROCK GUITARS Daisy Rock Guitars is the only girl guitar company in the world founded by Tish Ciravolo. While launching her company in 2000, Tish discovered four percent of the guitar playing community was female. She then proved the idea that if you build something ergonomically correct for a female - lighter in weight, smaller neck profile - more girls would learn how to play guitar. Because of DRG, the female guitar playing population in 2017 is currently at 30 percent. Tish Ciravolo founded Daisy Rock Girl Guitars in 2000, combining a lifelong passion for making music with a desire to level the playing field for dedicated and beginner female guitarists and bassists of all ages, creating guitars and basses specifically comfortable for females to play. With an idea stemming from her daughter’s drawing of a daisy, Tish launched a girl guitar company with the mission to help girls make music. The Daisy Rock Girl Guitar Company not only designs guitars with shapes and colors that would appeal to females, Tish also ensures music stores which sold the products were educated on the needs of female performers. Ciravolo’s dream and Daisy Rock Guitars ongoing mission is to “do whatever it takes to get more girls to learn how to play guitar.” Tish Ciravolo, President/Owner Call (818)590-3846 • tish@daisyrock.com www.daisyrock.com
