The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will be relocating its office in January 2017. The new location will be on the ground floor of the Sunset Media Center at 6255 Sunset Blvd., Suite 150. For the past 25 years, the Chamber has been housed on the campus of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. “Our phone number and email addresses will remain the same,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. “While we have enjoyed our long association with the Roosevelt Hotel, we are looking forward to welcoming our membership to a new state-of-the art office,” said Gubler.

Chamber Move Creates New Opportunities

A

quarter century is a long time … and that is how long the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has been located adjacent to the Roosevelt Hotel. In fact, most of our members no longer can remember when we were located any place else. Even among the Chamber staff, only Ana Martinez and I can recall when we first moved here (ironically from the very building that we will now be moving to). At the time, the Chamber staff was located “temporarily” in the cabanas located under the Roosevelt parking structure, while our space was being built out. What was supposed to have lasted six months ended up taking three years before our current office was finished. This has been a wonderful location for the Chamber right on the Walk of Fame. I’m a little nostalgic because my job interviews for this position were done at the Roosevelt Hotel. They have been wonderful partners over the years. The annual barbecue that the Chamber does for the LAPD/LAFD was initiated over 20 years ago by Alex Baptiste, who was the General Manager of the hotel at the time. Alex served as the Chair of the Board, and several subsequent GM’s also served on our board. Johnny Grant, who chaired the Walk of Fame for nearly 30 years, lived in the penthouse of the Roosevelt Hotel, which was very convenient when he needed to have meetings at the Chamber. When the Chamber was founded in 1921, it began on Hollywood Blvd. Over the years, the Chamber has been located on one or the other of Hollywood’s two major boulevards – Hollywood or Sunset. So now, here we go again – bouncing back to Sunset. The Roosevelt management advised us more than a year ago that they needed our space back for their future plans. They have been very generous in giving us plenty of time to identify a new location for the Chamber and to plan our move. We are excited about the opportunity to move back to the recently renovated 6255 Sunset Blvd. building, which will offer the Chamber great visibility. Not only will we have signage on the building, but we will also be located on the ground floor with easy access for our members. And it will put the Chamber in the current center of development activity for Hollywood. I would like to especially thank the members of the relocation committee, who have spent countless hours on this project. They include Donelle Dadigan, chair; Marty Shelton, Mark Panatier, and Jeff Zarrinnam. One of the great things about the Chamber is that we have volunteers who possess great expertise and are willing to donate their time to this organization. I am confident that because of their help, we are going to have a home of which our members will be proud and which will serve a valuable function as a meeting center for Hollywood. We will let you know when our open house is scheduled!

A Conversation with Councilman O’Farrell Continued from Page THREE

The action of the LA City Council spurred the State of California to follow our lead. My work has positively impacted the collective public health in the Los Angeles workplace and in our neighborhoods. Since my roots are in community activism, I’m also always intensely focused on improvements I can make to quality of life across the great 13th District. I’ve worked hard to make sure our communities are safe, pleasant and walkable, so I’ve implemented several measures aimed at pedestrian safety. Since taking office, we’ve approved 12 brand-new full traffic signals across the district, many of which are in close proximity to schools. Five of these signals have already been installed, including three in Hollywood. There will be at least six more full signals coming to Hollywood over the next year or two. This is in addition to the “scramble” (diagonal) crosswalk at Hollywood/Highland, which I approved in 2015 and has been an incredible success, turning one of the most dangerous intersections in the City into a safe pedestrian crossing What has been your biggest challenge as councilman? One of the things I’ve talked about ever since running for the seat is a “culture of indifference” at City Hall. I’ve also been public about this recently in the context of my “Open For Business” initiative aimed at helping small businesses across the City. While there are many, many devoted and passionate public servants at City Hall, there is often an atmosphere that puts a lot of emphasis on bureaucracy but not on simple, streamlined solutions. I’ve been fighting against that mindset since my days as a community activist and am continuing to do so as a Councilmember. What do you hope to achieve in your second term? I want to help lead the way out of

the number one crisis facing our City: the lack of affordable housing. I have seven initiatives pending that would result in a dramatic increase in the production of affordable housing, and I hope to see these proposals become law if I’m fortunate enough to receive a second term in office. I also want to continue my work across the district in improving public safety, quality of life and the built environment across our neighborhoods. What was your most surprising discovery upon becoming a councilman? The disconnect at City Hall between rhetoric and lack of actual political will to follow through. Will the Hollywood Target ever be completed? I believe it will. While there have been well-documented legal challenges to this project – which has now been stalled for over two years – we have worked very diligently and effectively at finding a solution that should allow construction to move forward. Once Mitch completed, the Target will provide O’Farrell a tremendous economic benefit to an area that not only needs this project, but wants it. Over the years, I’ve been contacted by countless stakeholders regarding this topic, and I’m well aware that the vast majority of my constituents want the Target to be completed. How would the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative impact Hollywood if it passes? The biggest danger regarding the initiative is that its impact would be far greater than simply in Hollywood – although Hollywood would certainly feel the effects of this misguided

proposal. Many world-class projects proposed for Hollywood would suddenly disappear – including residential, office, retail and hotel projects – at a time when we are seeing unprecedented investment in our community. While the initiative only calls for a two-year moratorium on certain types of construction, make no mistake: the end result would be much more than a two-year stop to construction. This would put the brakes on quality investment in the City of Los Angeles for many years and will harm our ability to produce affordable housing. Is it possible to bridge the gap between new development and homeowners who are fearful of its impact on their quality of lives? Yes. I’ve said repeatedly that we don’t have to sacrifice what is great about our neighborhoods in the name of progress. When a new development is proposed that calls for some kind of discretionary action on the part of the Council office, my staff and I take great care in making sure that the project is appropriate for its surroundings. For example, density makes

more sense in areas that are wellserved by public transportation, especially our subway system. But there have been several areas where I have worked to ensure that development does not improperly alter the character of a neighborhood. For example, in my first few years in office I worked to downzone parts of Echo Park (along Sunset Boulevard) and Elysian Valley (along the Los Angeles River), because I wanted to ensure that any future development was compatible with its surroundings. A Conversation with Mitch O’Farrell Continued from Page FIVE

What are you trying to achieve with your motions relative to tour operators? Most importantly, I want to ensure that the entire tour bus experience is a safe one for all - whether it’s the tourists themselves, the drivers, and certainly for the residents and stakeholders in Los Angeles. There have been too many reports of unsafe experiences, some of which have recently been highlighted by the news media. I want to make sure that the City is doing everything it can to ensure public safety as it relates to tour buses. To that end, one of the things I’m interested in is getting recommendations as to how the City could potentially increase its enforcement and regulatory authority, the bulk of which currently lies with the State. I think we could have a safer and more effective system if Los Angeles had more direct control over the regulation of tour buses. What is your program for small businesses? I’m very excited about my “Open For Business” initiative, which aims to streamline the way entrepreneurs obtain permits, cut the bureaucratic red tape associated with opening a business, and reduce the upfront costs for mom-and-pop operations to open their doors. I want to change the perception that there is a culture of indifference at City Hall. As part of this initiative, I’ve introduced a series of motions that direct City staff to report on amending permit fees to make them more equitable for small businesses; creating an expedited process for “good operators” to renew Conditional Use Permits; modifying existing code requirements that hinder certain types of businesses from opening; ensuring case management services are available to small businesses; and identifying specific employees within the Departments of City Planning and Water and Power to act as liaisons to Building and Safety and small business owners to help these small business owners open for business. 6 n hollywoodchamber.net

Do you really think it is possible to bring order to the situation on Hollywood Blvd. with the “characters” and “CD vendors”? Absolutely. I’ve been involved in this issue for many years, since my time on the staff of my predecessor. The costumed characters and street performers, if regulated, can be a great asset to Hollywood Boulevard and help bring a unique identity to the area. That being said, the area is one of the busiest in the City - with only 12 foot-wide sidewalks - and there have been several well-documented instances of criminal activity

involving some of the characters and vendors, including physical altercations between each other and cases of robbery or intimidation of tourists. The City Attorney and Los Angeles Police Department are looking very closely at what we can do to ensure this is a safe environment for everyone involved (including the characters), while respecting the First Amendment rights of free speech and expression. We want people to have a safe, positive experience with the folks they encounter on Hollywood Boulevard, and I’m confident that we can strike the right balance on this issue. Hollywood Chamber Adds Four Stars T

he Hollywood Walk of Fame has been hustling with star ceremonies. October was a very busy month with four stars dedicated. Clarence Avant, a music mogul was surrounded by friends, Irving Azoff, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Bill Withers, Quincy Jones, Jamie Foxx and many others as they all spoke about his incredible career in the music business. The star in the category of Recording is located at 6363 Hollywood Boulevard. Next was comedian Kevin Clarence Hart who was honored with a Avant Live Performance star for his stand up work. His star was placed at 7013 Hollywood Boulevard next to DSW Shoes and Marshalls retail store for the perfect reason. Before Kevin took the entertainment world by storm, he honed his work ethic as a shoe salesman in his hometown of Philadelphia. It’s fitting Allison Janney that a man who has achieved so much in his career and given such joy to so many across the world has never forgotten where he comes from. If the shoe fits, Kevin...” Allison Janney from the hit shows “Mom” and the very popular “West Wing” was also honored at the corner of Hollywood and Gower. The star in the category of Television was dedicated at 6100 Hollywood Boulevard down the street from the newly developed Eastown. The reason for that location is that she used to live near that corner with her actress girlfriends and even created their own fictional Gower Acting Drama Academy (GADA) which they always use to Hugh remember the days when they Laurie first started their careers in show business. Last but not least is the British actor Hugh Laurie from the hit show “House,” and his new show broadcast on hulu called “Chance,” where again he plays a doctor.

Fittingly, his star in the category of Television was dedicated in front of the Pig N’ Whistle, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard, the British pub where other luminaries have their stars. They include: Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Ridley Scott and Dame Helen Mirren. Log onto www.walkoffame to view the videos of Kevin Hart their star dedications right after the ceremonies. If you can’t make it to Hollywood, you can enjoy the ceremonies via a livestream by the Chamber’s exclusive media partner Variety. ollywood’s famous dentist, Dr. Fariba Kalantari recently received a Fellowship Award from the International College of Dentists. The International College of Dentists is a leading honorary dental organization dedicated to the recognition of outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service, and the continued progress of the profession of dentistry for the benefit of all humankind. The idea for the College was created in 1920 by Dr. Louis Ottofy with the help of Dr. Tsurukichi Okumura of Japan and incorporated in 1928. Its purpose was to promote cordial relations within the profession and help disseminate scientific information. The College was formed to advance the science and art of dentistry for the health and welfare of the public, to bring together the world’s outstanding

Paramount Contractors & Developers Continues to Meet TV Entertainment Industry’s Short Term Production Space Requirements at Hollywood Offices

W

ith television production companies looking to anchor themselves in Hollywood again, Paramount Contractors & Developers (PCD) Hollywood Offices at 6464 and 6565 Sunset Boulevard are among the few properties which offer flexible lease terms and turnkey ready spaces. PCD is hoping such lease deals would assist pre/post-production tenants to remain in Hollywood. Brian Folb of PCD said: “Because of the uncertainty whether a particular show they are working on will get picked up by a network, productionrelated tenants usually commit to leasing for a few months. Most office space leasing agents won’t even offer to help look for such kind of space due to the lower commissions paid for short term rentals.” "They can usually house themselves on the television production lots,” Folb noted. “However, these facilities are already overtaxed, expensive, and do not lend for a good experience as they get bumped around to make room for shows already renting space for larger ongoing productions.” According to Folb, the landlord faces the risk of turnover cost if the

tenant doesn’t end up having a successful show. “The tenant cannot commit for an extended stay - a risk which many institutional building owners can’t take due to restrictions from lenders. On the other hand, the tenant is looking for a location and a landlord who understands their needs and can offer a one-stop-shop management team which can accommodate those needs, allowing the tenant to do their job without interruptions.” Folb and his leasing team at PCD

understand that television production space is a very specialized niche market, and also one that is critical to the industry they are trying to keep in Hollywood. PCD announced that they have figured out the formula at Hollywood Offices and created a successful office leasing program out of it. Learn more at www.hollywoodoffices.com. CHAMBER BUSINESS BENEFIT

MUSEUM OF BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS The Museum of Broken Relationships explores broken love and other human relationships – what they mean to us, what they tell us about what we share and how we can learn and grow from them. It is composed of objects donated anonymously by members of the public from all over the world. Each exhibit is an object (some of them ordinary, some of them extraordinary) and a story, which together recount a watershed event in someone’s life. The exhibits reflect the full range of human emotions. Some are sad; but many are amusing and hopeful and remind us that people change, grow and recover. Love relationships may end; relationships with family members, business partners, cities, religions and even with our former selves may end. But we learn and move on. The dislocation of a broken relationship may be isolating, but the experience is universal. No one is alone in this. In 2016, John B. Quinn founded the Museum in Los Angeles, a city of dreams – many realized and many not – which often leave broken relationships in their wake.
