A cop must stop terrorists robbing a finance office in LA when visiting his family at Christmas. Not a second is wasted in this masterpiece, it’s constantly gripping, highly exciting, packed with outstanding action sequences and the cast are uniformly excellent, especially Alan Rickman. 4K Available

DIE HARD 2 Directed by Renny Harlin

Starring Bruce Willis, William Atherton, Bonnie Bedelia In the second part of the most exciting action series of the 90s, again set at Christmas, Willis must stop a group of terrorists holding an airport to ransom. Expect bigger explosions, greater action set-pieces and a higher body count, in this enjoyable and over-the-top sequel.

Starring Bruce Willis, Jeremy Irons, Samuel L. Jackson The third ‘Die Hard’ film is gritty and darker, as a burnt-out McClane must stop a terrorist who is setting off a series of large explosions, which is a ruse to distract from a billion dollar bank job. The frantic pace of the film is breath-taking, the set-pieces are jaw dropping, and the pairing of Willis and Jackson is fantastic.

Starring Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters Iconic disaster movie about a capsized luxury liner as the trapped all-star cast have to find their way to safety. The film is packed with great over-thetop action sequences and full of Oscar-winning special effects. This hugely entertaining film ushered in the hugely popular disaster genre of the 70s.

Starring Sandra Bullock, Jason Patric, Willem Dafoe In this ‘Speed’ sequel, while enjoying a peaceful cruise in the Caribbean with her new lover, Bullock finds herself in danger again when the ship is hijacked by a terrorist. Bigger in scale with more explosive action and high drama, this nailing-biting sequel is a fast-paced thrill-ride.

A junior advertising exec must do whatever he can to hire the famous actress, Rita Marlowe, who is the perfect to model the Stay-Put lipstick product. Randall is great as the put upon exec and Russell’s comic timing is superb.

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Directed by Mel Brooks

Starring Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn After ‘Blazing Saddles’, this is the most successful of Brooks’ parodies, as well as a tender homage to the Universal horror’s of the 30s. Young Frederick Frankenstein, a brain surgeon, goes back to Transylvania and pores over his grandfather’s notebooks. Handsome black and white cinematography and authentic set design make this an engaging comedic homage.

Starring Sissy Spacek, Shelley Duvall, Janice Rule Altman’s hypnotic and unconventional film tells the story of a strange young girl who befriends her co-worker. As this friendship deepens, the identities of the women strangely start to merge. The ensemble cast are uniformly excellent and Altman’s sound design helps to add another layer of confusion to this unorthodox masterpiece.

Ford displayed his greatest directorial skills when dealing with human drama and this moving melodrama is no exception. The film explores a mother’s heart-breaking journey to reconcile the death of her son during the first World War.

THE THREE FACES OF EVE Directed by Nunnally Johnson

Starring Joanne Woodward, David Wayne, Lee J. Cobb Joanne Woodward won an Oscar for her riveting portrayal of a woman with three distinct and very different personalities in this astounding and engrossing drama. The film is structured as an extended flashback opening with Cash readying to take the stage at his historic Folsom Prison concert. Phoenix and Witherspoon are excellent, and the film includes great performances of ‘Folsom Prison Blues’, ‘I Walk the Line’, ‘Ring of Fire’, amongst other Cash classics.

An impatient stockbroker is willing to do anything to get to the top, and falls foul of a greedy corporate raider.
