POLICE REPORT TO PARISH COUNCIL

The Police presented their monthly report. During September 2022 there have been three reported crimes in the Parish. These included two of theft and one non-dwelling burglary. All the incidents are linked to the ongoing building works on the Estate.

The recent Estate walkabout was well attended and a number of issues were highlighted.

There has been a number of reports of anti-social behaviour on Fanshawgate Lane, including obstructive parking, music and nuisance.

DRONFIELD POLICE SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM

September crime figures: Theft: 2, Criminal damage: 1.

In July we listened to the community about issues affecting them. One issue was off road motorbikes causing nuisance and anti-social behaviour.

During July and August, there were several calls for action in relation to this. Over the last few months we have been working hard with partner agencies to identify the individuals responsible. This has involved working closely with South Yorkshire Police and schools within the Sheffield City area. We have completed visits to relevant people of concern and given suitable advice and enforcement. Several bikes have been recovered by Police and will be destroyed. This has resulted in a reduction in reports of anti-social behaviour linked with nuisance motorbikes and improved the safety of the area for our residents and visitors.

You will see from the report there has been a number of thefts and one nondwelling burglary, all of these crimes are all linked together within one incident relating to the building work going on within the estate that happened at the same time. These reports remain ongoing and if anyone has any information relevant to the incident please contact police.

Following a recent estate walk it was great to have some residents and Rykneld homes attend and would love in future for the council and school to also join. INFORMATION REQUIRED BY THE POLICE

Following a number of Incidents in Holmesfield’s woodlands, Dronfield SNT are seeking the identification of the male in the picture. This individual has been linked with a number of incidents involving off road bikes and causing concerns and distress to other people within the woodland. If anyone has any information, please contact Derbyshire Police via 101 quoting reference number 22*617077.

ROAD SAFETY REPORT

Two items of correspondence have been received from residents with regard to the volume and speed of traffic through the Parish.

The Parish Council have continued to report matters and make requests to the Highways Authority to improve the situation on the roads in the Parish.

We have been trying to persuade Derbyshire County Council to do more to manage vehicle speeds through the roads in Holmesfield and Millthorpe and this includes:

• Request/s for reducing the 40mph zone between Holmesfield and Dronfield have been met with silence.

• Request/s for reducing the 60mph zone between Owler Bar and Holmesfield to 40mph have been met with silence.

• Request/s to put in chicanes at the start of the 30mph zones rejected outright because of the width of the roads.

• Request/s to put flashing 30mph signs in were refused as these were apparently against Derbyshire County Council policy, even though they have been put into Barlow village. The Parish Council offered to pay for the signs and even this was outright refused.

However, Derbyshire County Council have now revised their policy and grants are being offered by the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner to put in mobile flashing speed signs. The Parish Council applied for a grant in mid-August and we are still waiting to hear whether or not we have been successful. If we are successful then the Parish will need to match fund the grant and will be totally responsible for erecting, maintaining, and providing all information to Derbyshire County Council regarding the speeds.

• In addition, we try to run a Speed Watch but there are not enough volunteers; we have been making regular pleas for help in the newsletter with only limited success. We get contacted by so many residents complaining about speed, but they will not provide the practical help that we need. In August 2022, one Speed Watch was carried out. 509 cars registered travelling east past the school and 45 of those travelling over 35 mph past the school, including one local resident.

• Our only success has been the removal of bench outside the school and the construction of hard standing to facilitate the standing of police speed camera vans - to date no such vehicles have used the hard standing, but we understand that the local SNT have requested the Speed Enforcement team to attend the site.

HOLMESFIELD CRICKET CLUB DEFIBRILLATOR

The cricket club’s defibrillator is now in an unlocked cabinet. Just break the thin cable tie and turn the plastic casing to open. It is located on the bottom side of the pavilion so it is available to anyone. If it is ever required, please let a member of the club know so we can check it all over for the next time. HOLMESFIELD CHURCH WALKING GROUP

FOX HOUSE WALK

On Wednesday 2nd November, Robin Greetham will lead a walk starting from the Fox House public house (S11 7TY) near Longshaw. We will walk mainly on the tracks towards the wooden pole before heading towards Longshaw Lake and crossing the road near Burbage Bridge and then back to the pub. The walk is approximately 4½ miles long but a short cut is available. If you would like to come just turn up on the day. The cost of the walks is £4 and the proceeds will go to Holmesfield Church. HOLMESFIELD VILLAGE HALL CAR PARK

A large number of vehicles not connected with Village Hall bookings are now using the car park on a daily basis. This is now preventing users of the hall from accessing the car park. The village hall car park is private property and unless you are using the building, parking is not permitted.

Parking on private land without permission may invalidate your motor vehicle insurance. Currently the Parish Council will be placing notices on offending vehicles, but if the situation continues then other methods including locking of the car park or clamping offending vehicles will be considered.

COST OF LIVING CRISIS

The cost of living is rising and this could have a big impact on all aspects of your finances including energy bills, the cost of your weekly shop and your take home pay.

Derbyshire County Council have put together lots of information and advice, designed to ensure that you’re getting all the help that you are entitled to. The government has outlined plans to help cut energy bills for businesses. The amount of money that the members’ Community Leadership Scheme allocates to each of our 64 county councillors annually has been doubled. From advice around welfare rights and benefits, to support for families, people with long-term health conditions and carers.

The County Council also got advice on how to become more energy efficient, reduce food waste and information about local food support projects. It’s worth remembering that all libraries across the county offer warm and welcoming spaces for everybody, and you don’t need to be library member to visit them.

The government has also launched its Cost of Living campaign giving information about the financial support package that is rolling out nationally, including help with bills. You can find out more about what you are eligible to receive.

SUPERVISING CHILDREN’S ONLINE ACTIVITY

Parents/Guardian’s should be aware about allowing your child unsupervised access to the internet and unlimited access to your bank details when playing games online. Monitor what kind of sites your child is visiting, keep track of who they are speaking to online, make sure you have security settings up to date and that your bank details can’t be accessed without your permission. HOLMESFIELD GARDENING ASSOCIATION

Our chairman, Robin Greetham, has announced that our trophies have been found at last (they disappeared during the Covid Lockdown ) to everyone’s relief.

A very good talk followed by Sally Mosley who is the corespondent for ‘walks in Derbyshire’ for The Peak Advertiser. Her talk was accompanied by beautiful photographs. She also gives guided walks tours, etc. Her talk was entitled ‘A Year In The Peak District’ and it encompassed most of Derbyshire and mentioned places I am not familiar with such as Norbury Hall and Wolfscote Hill. The talk was very well received. The next Big Event is our Pie & Pea Supper on the Wednesday 2nd November with Entertainment! Please book prior to the event to book your pie and please bring liquid refreshment of your own choice and glasses. Please see the advert in the October issue of the Parish Newsletter.

On Wednesday 7th December our talk will be ‘The Adventurous Gardener’ given by Hilary Hudson in Holmesfield Village Hall starting at 7.30pm. So we hope to see you all, plus friends and family at our supper. For any enquires, please contact Hilary Olsen on 0114 2890927.

Its the Hyacinth competition in February so don’t forget to buy and plant them soon. It seems they need 10 weeks in a cool dark place before removing them into the warm to encourage flowering. Frances Webb

HOLMESFIELD MARKET UPDATE

The local market this October was the first time we had over 30 stalls at that time of the year. The market was located at three venues, the Angel Inn, the Church Hall and the Village Hall. We had lots of new stalls and plenty of regular ones too. Once again it was a great success and the stall holders have left the team great reviews on facebook. Kohler Homeware, Charles Butler Fine Comestibles, and Sew and Sow were just a few of the stalls that had lots of interesting products. We were sad that Carl from Millthorpe Nursery had to pull out at the last minute as our lovely ‘friend’ Covid put a stop to his gallop!

On Saturday 3rd December, we will have a big market again covering the three venues. Once again we will welcome lots of regular but also plenty of new faces too. We thank you for your continued support of the market. The profits we make allows us to contribute financially to the village. This month we made a donation of £500 towards a third defibrillator for the village. Robin Greetham has been coordinating this activity with the Dronfield Rotary club, the Holmesfield Village Society and the Local Market, whom have all made contributions. We will see this new unit appearing soon and will be located outside the George & Dragon. Big thanks to Robin for his help. It would be remiss of us not to mention Mandy Drewery in this article. Mandy was the inspiration for the local market and has been a huge contributor both to the team and the market itself. We are absolutely gutted that Mandy and Mal have left Holmesfield after 11 years and we will miss them very much for all the contributions they made to our village, especially allowing us to use the Angel Inn as the centre for the Holmesfield Support Group during lockdown. Charity collections, Support Veg Boxes, Easter Card collections, VE day Garden Party centre, and many more activities were run from the Angel. We thank you very much, Mandy, for everything you have done for the market and wish you and Mal the best for your next adventures. (But we know you will come back to see us!) Mandy has promised to help us with our marketing of the market until we get a replacement. Which brings me nicely on to a new opportunity...

Glow! Youth Club continues to go from strength to strength. We’ve considered the international make up of our group despite us all living in Holmesfield and surrounding villages. We’ve welcomed Rev Elliot and Megan to our team of volunteers and have taken the young people to Laser Quest courtesy of Derbyshire police preventing ASB grant.

GOOD NEWS! Extreme Wheels Roadshow who came last year over the winter have approached us to come back. They brought excellent activities and we look forward to having them from Monday 14th November.

RELIEF IN NEED AND PENNY ACRES TRUSTS

Residents are reminded that funds are available from these ancient trusts for people over the age of 60 living in Holmesfield who may experience difficulty in paying for fuel during the winter months. Hi all and Happy Autumn! I hope that you have been enjoying the glorious Autumn weather. As I write this, we are getting ready for some Halloween movie fun in Holmesfield Village Hall and also our amazing village Pumpkin Trail. We are looking forward to seeing the children (and adults!) dressed up for the spooky spectacular entertainment. I’m sure you will all agree that having a big screen experience in the Village Hall right on our doorstep is brilliant and it also raises funds for projects in our village such as Glow! youth club and the much needed refurbishment of the village playground. We hope to bring you more information about the amount we raised at the end of this year. Events like these take a lot of planning and organising so please do come along and support us where you can when we do events such as these as they are always good fun and without them we wouldn’t be able to help much needed village projects or events such as the Pumpkin Trail, the Village Christmas tree and Santa’s Grotto. Our lovely village also looks great dressed up for Halloween and many villagers enjoyed the now annual Pumpkin Trail. Massive thanks to Clair and Adrian, the new owners of The Angel, who agreed to open specially on Monday 31st October to provide sustenance in the form of pumpkin soup and parkin for the Pumpkin Trailers – this will be very much appreciated by everyone! November is a time for personal reflection and national gratitude for those who fought to protect our freedoms. We were pleased to hear so much encouragement and so many supportive comments as we put the poppies up throughout the village on Saturday 22nd October. We are delighted that this year we had new poppies dedicated to those lost by relatives in Holmesfield. To see a name on a poppy is very moving and reminds us why, as villagers, we make this small gesture each year. The Soldier memorials are also on display once again. They are located in the Millennium Garden, on the Crescent, in Millthorpe and outside Penny Acres school. Massive thanks go to Kirste and Carl Farrell for helping to organise the poppies being displayed along with the Holmesfield Village Society team. I hope you all agree that they look amazing in the Village.

After Remembrance Sunday we will be running headlong into Christmas. The Village Society will be putting up and decorating the Village Christmas tree in the Millennium Garden on Saturday 26th November. We then have the Christmas Market in Holmesfield on 3rd December to look forward to – an ideal opportunity to buy some unique and beautiful gifts for Christmas!

On Sunday 18th December, Santa and his helpful elves will be coming to the grotto at The George & Dragon – book early to see him to avoid disappointment using the form in this edition of the Parish Newsletter. After Santa has departed we will be joined again this year by the amazing Barry Fisher and there will be carols, mulled wine and mince pies around the village Christmas tree – we are really looking forward to this! Action Fraud has received 139 crime reports relating to fake text messages purporting to be from the UK government. The texts state that the recipient is “owed” or “eligible” for an energy bill discount as part of the Energy Bill Support Scheme. The links in the emails lead to genuine-looking websites that are designed to steal your personal and financial information.

The new edition of the Holmesfield Footpaths and Bridleways Guide is available, price £7.50. Although there has been a delay in getting the books printed due to the Covid outbreak, the response from purchasers has been gratifying and the committee has been delighted. HOLMESFIELD EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

Residents are reminded that this ancient village charity, dating back to the early 18th Century, has funds available to make grants to persons under 25 years old who are or whose parents are normally resident in the village. Grants may be made for or towards outfits, clothing, tools (including computers) instruments or books. Grants may be made for many other items or purposes which assist in promoting ‘education’ in its broad sense.

PUBLIC SPACE PROTECTION ORDER

Signs have been put on each entrance to the Play Ground reminding dog owners that North East Derbyshire District Council have put Public Space Protection Orders on all play areas within the District, this prohibits the entry of dogs to the Play Ground. Please adhere to this for the well-being of children using this facility.

USE OF PUBLIC RIGHTS OF WAY

There have been a number of complaints over the misuse of footpaths in the Parish by cyclists and horse riders. The designation of each right of way is integral to who can use:

• Footpaths: for walking, running, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Bridleways: for walking, horse riding, bicycles, mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Restricted byways: for any transport without a motor and mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs

• Byways open to all traffic: for any kind of transport, including cars (but they’re mainly used by walkers, cyclists and horse riders).

CARAVANS AT OWLER BAR

The issue of caravans in fields at Owler Bar is still of major concern; it is with some disappointment that the Parish Council are unable to get any action or even a reasonable update on the situation. They have now been contacting the Peak District National Park Authority on this issue since August 2019. THREATENING BLACKMAIL EMAILS

Have you received an unpleasant email demanding payment, trying to blackmail you?

#Extortion emails take varying forms. Most prominently, we see emails that accuse the recipient of having visited adult or illegal websites, and that footage/images have been obtained by having taken control of webcams – usually with a threat to distribute the images, if payment is not made, most commonly demanded in crypto currency.

More recently, we’ve seen a spate of emails reported containing personal details such as full names, addresses, and phone numbers.

In all likelihood, the email is purely phishing and as a result of publicly available information. They are hoping you will be frightened in to paying. It’s a good reminder that just because someone knows some details about you, that doesn’t mean the communication is legitimate.

Our advice is : Don’t panic, don’t pay and do not communicate with the criminal.

If you have received such an email, forward it to the National Cyber Security Centre’s Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS): report@phishing.gov.uk and then simply delete it.

Is your password mentioned? Do not worry if your password is mentioned. But DO ensure that you change any passwords you recognise, as soon as possible.

PREPARING FOR WINTER

Derbyshire County Council would like to hear from residents and farmers willing to help keep their communities safe when bad weather hits to supplement work carried out by their gritting teams.

Town and parish councils, schools and voluntary community groups help to clear snow in their areas as part of its Snow Warden Scheme. Each group is given a free delivery of up to a tonne of bagged grit and given training and advice on how to clear snow and ice safely.

Snow wardens get involved in:

• clearing snow and ice from their community’s pavements

• reporting local weather conditions through our website

• co-ordinating volunteers to clear snow and distribute grit

• reporting empty grit bins

Farmers and others with ploughing or gritting equipment are also being asked to work as contractors to help keep their local roads on the move from now until next April. Anyone taken on as a contractor will get £250 for signing up plus get extra payments for call outs.

Farmers and contractors need to:

• provide their own equipment

• be available to work 7am to 7pm, Monday to Sunday (extra help may be requested if conditions are particularly severe)

• arrange appropriate insurance

• be able to respond to a call out within 90 minutes

The Cabinet Member for Highways Assets and Transport, Councillor Kewal Singh Athwal, said: “With the warm weather we have enjoyed this summer it seems strange to be thinking of snow, but we need to get ready for whatever the winter will bring. I’d urge any local council or community group to have a think about helping their local community by clearing pavements when it snows. And for any farmers who have the right equipment to help with clearing snow on our rural roads to get in touch. We do appreciate all the help we get when bad weather hits and would like to thank everyone in advance for what they do for their communities.”

2022 WEATHER

When I wrote about the weather during August I remarked that the month had been very calm with very little wind. The average wind speed had been only 3.1mph. Well September was even calmer with a wind speed of only 2.5mph. It was not a particularly warm month, my mean was actually half a degree lower than normal, but we had quite a lot of sunshine and even though the total rainfall was about average, it nearly all fell in the few days at the beginning and end of the month. The warmest day was the 1st at 22.4°C, but the three weeks in the middle of the month were also very pleasant. In my mind, September is usually a pleasant gentle month – the children have gone back to school and so are missing some good ‘holiday weather’. September is a popular month for those not tied to school holidays to get away for a break. If you have a barometer in your house you might have noticed that the reading was past the twelve o’clock position for most of September. The twelve o’clock position on the dial marks the atmospheric pressure as 1000 millibars. There are usually words marked on the dial and above 1000, on the right of the dial, they read Fair, then Set Fair and then Very Dry. Well this year the pressure was above 1000 for the whole of the month. The isobars that appear on the weather forecast charts join up places where the pressure is the same. The Met office produce these charts by getting pressure readings from hundreds of ships and weather stations. During September we had areas of nice high pressure that gave us calm dry weather. Barometers are excellent at telling you if the weather is getting better or worse. If the reading rises when you tap the dial, then the weather is probably going to be improving, but if the pressure is falling then rain may be on its way. Barometers are quite a good way of assessing what the weather is going to do. They are actually a measure of the weight of air above our heads, báros means weight in Greek. As a result, the pressure will drop when you climb up a hill and this is why barometers are the basis of the altimeter fitted in aeroplanes for many years. Much of Holmesfield is about 800ft above sea level. This means that the pressure will be about 28 millibars lower in Holmesfield than at the seaside. 28 millibars is the difference between the ten and twelve o’clock positions on a barometer dial. If you are fortunate enough to take a ride in a hot air balloon, then you could take a small barometer with you and watch the pressure fall as the balloon rises. Barometers have quite an interesting history, but writing about that will have to wait as this report will become too long.
