The London Transport Rifle & Pistol Club London Transport's true role in the defeat of the Nazi's during World War 11 has been brought to light by this sale. The club was formed in 1907 as the Omnibus Shooting Club, becoming the London Transport Rifle and Pistol Club in 1936. At that time the board of directors of London Transport decreed that the club should be for the company's employees, who would only pay a peppercorn rent for the use of the ranges. The ranges, which occupied a labyrinth deep under Baker Street in central London, were used during the war for training purposes by organisations such as the French Secret Service, the Special Operations Executive, the Canadian Airforce and the Home Guard. Another regular visitor to the ranges was Sir Winston Churchill, who liked to practise his marksmanship in readiness for the expected Nazi invasion. When war was declared in September 1939, the club donated hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition to the war effort, and opened its doors to the military, realising the value of a fully equipped shooting range in the heart of the Capital. Much memorabilia was removed from the club when the Baker Street range closed its doors in 1996, with many items going to the Imperial War Museum, including a cinema screen tank target used by the SOE. The club's work during the war was so highly regarded by Westminster that it is the only such club whose members are entitled to walk past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day.
