CATHEDRAL NEWS January 2011

Volume 16 Issue 5
From the Rector
January 6, 2011 Dear People of Holy Family: As I sit down to write this rather late letter for the January Newsletter I realize this is the Seventeenth Anniversary of our bishop’s Episcopal ordination in Rome. I take this opportunity to congratulate him on this occasion and thank him for the seventeen years of service and concern he has shown us as our Bishop. As the people of his Cathedral parish we have been diligently served by him. Few Bishops in the county take the time and energy to celebrate the Sundays of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter with their Cathedral parish that Bishop Slattery spends with us. This gives us the opportunity to know him much better than most Cathedral parishioners know their Bishop. So, we thank you Bishop Slattery for your presence and concern for the whole diocese but especially for your presence and concern for us. Needless to say, life has changed in the rectory of the Cathedral. There is a true absence and loneliness without Msgr. Halpine. A day does not pass without someone making reference or comment about our Msgr. Halpine. We truly miss him and continue to offer prayers for the repose of his soul. One of his constant requests was that we pray for him after his death and so I encourage all of you to continue to pray for him. He certainly served this parish and city well in his many years of priesthood. Last but not least I thank you for your generosity at Christmas. I thank God that we had good weather and no blizzard. I thank you for your consideration and support of this parish. We have received many “Over the Hump” contributions during the holidays and many generous donations for our welfare as a parish. Thank all of you for your support. I truly look forward to our new year and all that we hope to accomplish together during this year. May all of you have a happy and blessed new year. Sincerely in the Holy Family,
Msgr. Gregory A. Gier Photo: Cathy Nelson

Deacon Tom Gorman takes charity seriously. For years—including many years before his ordination— he has coordinated both the Cathedral’s annual Turkey drive and the annual Clothing drive. A group of middle school and high school youth gave up sleeping in on the first morning of Christmas break to sort the hundreds of coats, blankets, and socks. Catholic Charities staff sends their thanks to the Cathedral parish for their continued generosity.
