Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II to be Canonized Centennial Year reaches Climax

The Rector’s Report

Dear People of Holy Family, What an exciting month we have before us in this month of April. We will bring the Lenten Season to a close with the great week we call Holy, concluding with Easter Sunday, April 20th. The actual date of our One Hundredth Anniversary falls on Tuesday, April 1st. A weekday in the Lenten Season is no time to celebrate such a great event so we have moved the final celebration to May 3rd and 4th. April 5th brings the wonderful experience of the Tulsa Oratorio Concert here in our wonderful building. What a fitting part of our yearlong celebration with such a wonderful use of this most resonant structure. On April 27th the Catholic Church throughout the world will establish two new Saints in Popes John XXIII and John Paul II. I am happy to share that our own Bishop Slattery will be in attendance in St. Peter’s when these Saints are canonized. What a thrill it must be to have the person who ordained him as Bishop canonized. I am so very happy he is able to be present for this great moment. He will return from Rome just in time to celebrate our Anniversary. April 27th is also our own great celebration of Carnivale; this is the primary experience for our children as we continue the celebration of our great history. It should be a greater experience of parish coming together just to have fun. These last weeks of Lent hopefully will be a time filled with grace and joy as we prepare to celebrate these great events of Easter and Anniversary. Sincerely in the Holy Family,

Msgr. Gregory A. Gier Rector

dried dates can be kept indefinitely – just perfect for a long caravan trip! Last but not least the palm tree is the ultimate provider of shade – and what oases would not be complete without one! And who would not be without their rolled frond weaving for spreading out on the burning sand when doing their required prostrations before God! One might say that the palm tree was for the biblical regions what the oak tree was to northern Europeans – a gift of the Divine! Recall that last month it was mentioned that the ashes of Ash Wednesday once reflected life after death – eternal life! Well, in ancient Egypt the palm frond was carried in funeral processions as a representation eternal life – and it is the ashes of the previous year’s palm fronds from which we are signed, in reality, for the same reason. So, come Palm Sunday know that when you take a frond, hold it upright you are doing more than holding a leaf, -you are holding aloft a sign of victory, a sign of eternal life, a sign that you are welcoming Christ Himself into your life! We, the members of Knights of Columbus #10388, extend to one and all a very Blessed and Happy Easter! PAX. 3

Here’s the schedule: • Tuesday, April 29: The Reformation • Tuesday, May 27: The Church in the Modern World Bring your friends, including ex-Catholics, non-Catholics, and anti-Catholics. Questions, comments and arguments are welcome. All sessions will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., downstairs in the Heiring Auditorium.

April 29: The Reformation. Were the “bad Popes” really that bad? Did the Church try to hide the Bible? Did Catholics try to buy salvation with indulgences? Who was Martin Luther? What did the Reformation really accomplish? Where did phrases like “bloody Mary” and “Jesuit equivocation” come from? Why is there such fierce religious hatred in Ireland? Answers may surprise you -- and will certainly surprise your Protestant friends.

Change for Life: Ultrasound Initiative This Lent, the Holy Family council of the Knights of Columbus are distributing plastic cups for parishioners to take home, throw their loose change into, then return to the Cathedral.

The money collected will go into a fund to purchase more ultrasound machines for the state of Oklahoma. There is a dire need for more machines so that more lives can be saved! Your pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters add up. Thousands of dollars were raised the last time we had this campaign.
